A unique flipover novel where you can choose which side to read first. The same main characters and the same TikTok challenge, but then...

Side A: Sandra J. Paul
How far would you go for a TikTok challenge?

When Lev and Ziggy decide to take on a TikTok challenge and go on a scavenger hunt to find a mysterious box with special powers, Ziggy disappears unexplainably. This leads to a descent into his village’s dark and mysterious past, wreaking havoc in his life.

Side B: Bart De Wolf
How far would you go for a TikTok video?

Lev only has one wish: to create a viral video. A challenge, a scavenger hunt, something that will explode his views and gain him followers. Along with his friends, he digs a hole in the garden in the middle of the night, looking for something spectacular. And that is exactly what they find. From that moment on, everything changes.

Echoes from the Deep truly surprised me with its originality. It’s a flipover book with two completely different stories, and I read them both. That made the experience even more special for me, because it felt like I was discovering two parallel worlds with the same characters.

In Sandra J. Paul’s part, I was drawn into Lev’s story and the mysterious disappearance of Ziggy. What starts out as an exciting game quickly turns into something much darker. I could really feel Lev’s fear and uncertainty, and the tension kept me hooked until the very end.

When I flipped the book and started Bart De Wolf’s version, I found myself in a completely different atmosphere. Here, Lev discovers a skeleton with a beating heart. This side felt much grimmer and almost supernatural, with an eerie tension that was very different from the first part.

What I loved most is how the two stories take such different paths while still connecting through Lev. It made me think about how choices and events can completely change the course of life. Both sides left an impression on me in their own way, and together they made this a truly memorable reading experience.

I've finished reading my ARC copy of 'Echoes From the Deep' written by Sandra J. Paul and Bart de Wolf. This book is a young adult horror (12+).

"The longer she thought she was safe, the longer she could pretend her world was perfectly fine."

What I love about this story is that it's a flipover. You can read two stories about the same characters, but they are totally different. I think it's refreshing and the stories were fun. Both stories were surprising too, they didn't the way I had expected them to go.

"No way out means no way in, which is an impossibility when you are being locked in a cave."

These stories are about Lev, Ziggy and Lucy. The three of them are best friends and do fun stuff together. They like to make TikTok's and try to find ways to make them go viral. But what will happen when they mix these things with darkness?

"Listen carefully, because this is your last chance. No carcasses. No dead things. This time, you give me a living body."

I enjoyed the story, it can totally be read by adults. Some things could have been a little more detailed, but it was still a fun read. Although it's for young adults, I did feel the tension grow while reading the story. Giving you the idea that the story is actually working towards something. There also were definitely enough parts that made the book feel like a horror.

"I am everything you fear and want to forget."

The two perspectives give you something to think about and makes you know the characters better. This story definitely sends: 'do not trust magic' vibes, but in a fun way. And it really focuses on needing to think about others, before thinking about your own selfish goals. Cause well.. the consequences can be horrific.
I give the story three and a half stars.

Thank you so much to Hamley Books and the authors Sandra J. Paul & Bart De Wolf for this ARC! Echoes from the Deep releases on October 17th, and it’s another amazing flipover experience I absolutely loved.

Although this one is quite different from Dead Girls Don’t Talk, I really enjoyed it! I started with Sandra J. Paul’s part, which had a wonderfully creepy atmosphere, but I also felt deeply for Lev (maybe because I recently lost my own nana 🥹). That emotional side really drew me in and made me connect to the story on a personal level.

When you flip to Bart De Wolf’s side, things take a darker, more sinister turn ,perfect for spooky season! It’s definitely a great Halloween read (if you dare 😉).

I loved both perspectives, and I highly recommend adding Echoes from the Deep to your Halloween TBR!

”What if you have to pay the ultimate price to get what you want?”

“I’m not going home empty-handed tonight.”

Review : This book is so much more than a typical YA horror novel. The captivating flipbook contains two stories, each following Lev and his best friends, Ziggy and Lucy. Both stories start the same, as they set out on an adventure for a TikTok challenge, but as the stories progress, each spirals into its own darkness, keeping me hooked from start to finish.

The only thing I wished for was a clearer physical description of Lev, Ziggy, and Lucy.

The chapters are short and sharp, filled with gruesome cliffhangers and creepy plot twists. Though this novel is brought to life by two different authors, the writing is easy to follow, making it a perfect read for younger readers.

Whether Lev ultimately created the perfect TikTok video—I’ll let you find out! Would I recommend this book? Absolutely. This unique YA (+12) flipover novel is the perfect spooky read. It’s dark, fast-paced, and impossible to put down. 👻🪾🎃

Suspenseful flipover book for daredevils!

Sandra’s book started off quite strange and made me question what was about to happen. The reveal of Lev’s secret really serves as a catalyst for the story and turned out to really grab my attention.

In Bart’s book the tension takes off immediately and reads a bit quicker than Sandra’s. The mysterious and gloomy atmosphere add to the spooky subject of the story. It’s dark and dooming and very suspenseful.

In all, Echoes from the Deep is a fresh take on books for a young audience. The fact that the book actually contains two books and is flipable, will definitely appeal to its target audience. Both stories are short, cover the same story skeleton (characters, setting…), but the plot is anything but the same.

I recommend this book to anyone who is a reading daredevil to enter the depths of a self-dug pit to discover the truth about dark and hidden town secrets.

Many tanks to the publisher Hamley Books for providing me a DRC of the book in exchange for sharing my opinion.
