In a world ruled by Fate, she was never meant to choose. But love doesn’t follow the rules.
Noé always dreamed of a life led by liberty and love, a life taken from her too soon. After being united with her Soulmate and disappearing into oblivion, she finds herself inexplicably returned.
Noé confronts a darkness deeper than anything she’s ever known, while Arthur risks everything to keep his promise to her alive. Everything she believed—about the world, about her past, about herself—is thrown into question. Now, the only way to protect her future is to confront the past she was never meant to know. In this gripping sequel to Soulmate, love and loss intertwine, and the line between friend and foe blurs dangerously.
I was such a wreck! I read "Soulmate" right before & since it ended on a major cliffhanger, the way "Soulless" opened was an absolute mindf*ck. What happened in between these two scenes??? I was immediately drawn into the story.
I think the main character doesn’t know what to believe, who to trust, or what is even real. You can see this so clearly throughout her thoughts—very well written, by the way—that she struggles with it. We also got the opportunity to get to know Noé a lot better here & I think the author did a very good job with that.
The pacing was rather slow, certainly compared to "Soulmate", but to me, that emphasized the fact that this book was more character-driven rather than plot-driven. It’s a different reading experience, but all the more interesting to see what happens with the characters, what they think & the choices they make based on their most inner thoughts.
Most of the time, I was so nervous! An eerie feeling creeping up on me with every little inconvenience I read about. The dystopian atmosphere was really palpable at times. The writing is very particular—without giving too much away, you could sense all the emotions & the underlying current in the other characters. The style is so lyrical that, sometimes, I even forgot what I was reading, just because I liked the tone of it & got lost in its rhythm.
And then that ending… I was a wreck, once again! It left us with a whole new cliffhanger & honestly, I can’t wait to read the next part!
I had the immense honor of receiving Soulless as an ARC from publisher Hamley Books. This book is the sequel to Laura Dirkx's 'Soulmate', so if you haven't read that one yet, pick up the first book before starting this one!
After reading 'Soulmate' last month, I did need a bit of time to get back into the world Laura Dirkx has written. But as soon as I fell in line with the story again, I have to say it became super intense again. The feelings our main character Noé experiences are expressed really well by the author. I also brings unexpected situations with the people around Noé, and especially Arthur. Noé was relatable at times: girl, getting up to pee at night in winter is the truest struggle known to man. Sadly an obviously, this struggle was one of the rare mundane ones our main character got to have, since she keeps getting thrown around by the life she currently lives.
We reconnect with our side characters as well. We get a new setting with them in it too. I went from liking certain characters to hating them a little too, and the other way around. Next to that, we also get a mysterious point of view of a stranger we have yet to meet. This also kept me curious as to who they were (although I guessed right) and what their end goal might be.
There were funny beats in between all the seriousness too. A scene that was reminiscent of the dinner scene from Shrek 2, in which they call out each other's names and Donkey just says 'Donkey' to be included. As well as a song played in chapter 5 that I wondered if it was 'Nights in White Satin' by The Moody Blues. At the author: am I right? At the readers: anyone else any guesses which song it might be?
In the end this story was quite a ride again. It was emotional, dark and compelling with cool and interesting world building. It builds a ramp so we can jump up to the grand finale that book three will, hopefully, bring. I am curious to see where Noé's story is going, so I cannot wait until I get to read the conclusion to the series!
Of course I need to give a shoutout and thanks to publisher Hamley Books and Laura Dirkx for the opportunity to ARC read for them. I hope to read some more in the future. As always this review is my honest opinion and left willingly. I hope the release for this sequel goes swimmingly.
I absolutely loved the first book in this series and I was already really looking forward to the sequel. I therefore signed up for a review copy as soon as I could and I was insanely happy when the email came that I got one! Time to start reading!
In a way this is a typical middle book. Our characters survived the first book and now they're trying to figure out what to do next, where to go and how to solve their issues. And although the characters were in a sort of good place in the beginning of this book, things eventually changed and our characters were on the run again.
The author did an amazing job using the characters to show us more of the world. We already saw some of it in the first book, but in this book the author adds more groups, more settlements, more people with goals. I love how all those groups have their own ups and downs. One thing can be better in one group, while another thing is better in another group. And as always: that one group where everything is perfect doesn't exist.
I also liked how in this book we got to see some consequences of what happened in the first book. Events in the first book did change things in the world we get to discover in this second book. Our characters are also different. They've been through quite some stuff and it shows. We therefore also see the characters growing throughout the story. We see them figuring out what's important for them and what they wanna fight for.
I can't wait to see what these characters are gonna do in the next book!
I was fortunate to be one of the ARC readers of soulless and i’m so glad I could read this in advance. I read soulmate a few days ago and im so glad I could start soulless right after cause of the cliffhanger! We got more and more information in soulless and I cant wait to see how it ends in the last book! This book was such a good read, I flew through the pages and couldn’t put it down. And the ending? Not at all what I expected and I loved that! I love learning more about Noe and getting more insight on her deep and dark thoughts. And i’m in love with Noe and Arthur’s chemistry 🥰 Can’t wait for more. Thank you for choosing me as one of your arc readers (:
Soulless by Laura Dirkx is a gripping sequel set in a world where fate rules everything. I enjoyed following Noé as she returns to confront her past and struggles between destiny and choice. The emotional bond with Arthur adds depth, and the vivid writing pulled me in. Some parts felt a bit rushed, but overall it’s a captivating and heartfelt read.
I read this one as a proofreader and as a sequel to Soulmate all I can say is that Soulless was EVERYTHING I EXPECTED AND MORE! The author gives us some information we have been waiting for in Soulmate, but also keeps the suspense and action very much alive. Once I started reading this book I couldn't stop and finished it in a few days, which for me is rare. Can't wait for the 3rd one!!
Soulless is the sequel of Soulmate. I have waited three years to dive back into this trilogy and was very excited to start this sequel. I must admit that due to waiting three years, I had to get back into the story in the beginning. Luckily Laura Dirkx has an amazing writing style, drawing you right back into the story.
I really enjoyed the mysterious chapters in this book. At first I thought these might be from Noé her soulmate, however further on in the story I started doubting this tought. Who is the person behind the mysterious POV? Read Soulless and find out!
I finished reading my ARC copy of 'Soulles' written by Laura Dirkx. This is the second book in the 'Soulmate' trilogy and is a young adult fantasy.
"A name is more than a word. It's the only thing you're allowed to keep from your parents."
I loved book one and I absolutely loved book two. I enjoy how unique this story is and how easily it reads. I love how the story builds while the characters grow with the story. And the end? I'm both broken and excited.
"If this is the end of the world, I want to be with you."
This book is mainly about Neó who is the FMC. Her soulmate Arthur is the MMC. Along their way they make friends that are part of their story. With an extra special one joining them at the end of the story. They are forced to make so many difficult decisions, having to question everything they know. Fight to survive and earn the right to be free. But are or will they ever actually be free?
"Fate does what it wants, completely independent of our actions. Whether you curse it or love it, it does what is meant for you."
This story is incredible fun to read, it has tension, depth, emotions and I just couldn't stop reading. I needed to know what would come next and it never dissapoints. Their are enough plottwist that are smartly woven into the story and I felt with the characters every step of the way.
"I will always find you. Anywhere. Always."
This story is about doubting yourself, about strength, guilt, love, found family, friendship, loss and so much more. Making it not only a fun story to read, but creating an extra layer of emotion within it. I really can't wait for book three and I give 'Soulless' five deserving stars.
I’m so happy to have received an arc to the second book of this trilogy! Nearly a year ago I read Soulmate and absolutely loved it, ending in an illegal cliffhanger. Finally I got to read what came next! I did have to dive back into book 1 a little before starting this one, but I gave me the perfect run up.
Book 1 ending in Noe being capture by the Regime and book 2 starting with freeing her immediately set the pace. The story did slow down after that tho. There wasn’t really much happening other than Noe beginning to remember what had happend. I do have to say that for my personal liking it took a bit too long before something was happening again. Laura’s writing style kept me reading. Even though there wasn’t a lot happening, Laura’s quick and easy paced writing kept on going. I loved this about book 1 too and was happy to see that hadn’t changed.
Also something that I did really like were the little cursive chapters. They kept me going cause I really wanted to know who on earth that psycho was. And oh boy the reveal was so worth it.
Towards the end stuff started going down and I was really surprised to have reached the end of the book at about 200 pages. The book ending in a cliffhanger again, but I feel like a 100 more pages could’ve rounded up the whole series. But obviously can’t say that for sure without knowing what Laura has planned for the final book! I just wish that the happenings of the final pages either started earlier or kept going for longer.
All in all I did enjoy the book, it didn’t wow or shock me like the first one and felt more like a novella leading up to the final book. I feel like it could’ve been so much more action packed, like the first one was. But yes, I enjoyed myself and do look forward to reading book 3!!
"I don't recognize the person staring back at me- not just because of the hair color, but the coldness in her eyes."
In Soulles krijgen we gelukkig antwoorden.
I had re-read Soulmate before i started with Soulless just to remember what happened in that book and I was so invested in Soulless i couldn’t put it down. The storylines were well written although i might have recognized some inspiration from other books in certain scenes (which is nothing wrong with) like from Outlander, Divergent & The Hunger Games. It was also very interesting to read Noé’s thoughts when she was anxious or in danger but she also stood up for herself when it was necessary. Because of this book i am back in my dystopian era and I want to re-read the books i mentioned in this review. I want to thank Hamley Books for this arc and honestly can’t wait for the third book.
I read this book as a proofreader. The prologue already made my heart race from exitement and tension. Noe's resilience is tested repeatedly, which you can read about in beautifully written vulnerable conversations and her sometimes dark thoughts. Just like in Soulmate, you discover the world through her eyes and as a reader start to use all of your senses in the process. The additional mysterious storyline throughout the book makes it impossible to put down. I 1000% recommend this incredible sequel!
Thank you, Hamley Books, for giving me the opportunity to be an ARC-reader for this book!
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ ☆ (4)
Soulless is an atmospheric and gripping sequel that dives deeper into the bonds of family and chosen connections. It beautifully highlights how love, loyalty, and found belonging can give strength, even in the darkest moments.
The story begins at a slower pace, focusing on Noé and the aftermath of her trauma, but this also makes her journey feel raw and human. Toward the end, the tension rises quickly, pulling me along in a whirlwind of emotions. I did find myself wishing for more insight into some of the side characters, especially Thyme and the inner battles he’s clearly fighting, but the relationships between them still shone through.
Noé finally finds a family member after longing for it for so long. Along the way, they face the Regime, the Soulless, and the Burned Hand: a community that arose as a result of the sacrifices she made in Soulmate, even though she didn’t yet know about them. She sacrificed her freedom in the process, and the moment her family finally finds her becomes the true cliffhanger, one that left me so excited and curious for the third book! Soulless is a strong follow-up to Soulmate, and I can’t wait to see where the story will take us next.
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ ☆ — a heartfelt, atmospheric read about love, family, and resilience.

Soulless picks up where it left off after the gripping cliffhanger from Soulmate.
This book questions the meaning of a Soulmate and Love. It defies existing societal structures and broadens your horizon. It mainly centres around love and friendship, making it feel like an emotional rollercoaster as it touches your heart. Beyond that, there is rebellion and a call-out to go beyond your comfort zone. To dare to take risks and critically reflect on the world around you.
While Noé, our main protagonist, has learned much from this new world she was pushed into (bare feet and all), she has yet to learn a lot more about humanity and society. Noé has a courageous and loyal character, but what was most striking to me was her curiosity. I loved reading the way in which she looks at the world. It makes you, as a reader, feel like you’re experiencing the world for the first time. With her optimism, it looks beautiful and magical. I could vividly imagine the wonder in her eyes. Her striking red hair matches her spirited personality. Looking back, I’d say that Arthur has undergone quite the character development. He goes from being a brooding mystery to a loving, protective young man. We learn more about his background, giving his character more depth. While both Noé and Arthur make some mistakes, they always have the best intentions. Their chemistry warmed my heart, and their bond seemed stronger than in the first book, despite them being separated for some time.
We also get introduced to other characters, expanding the world. They were well-developed and contributed splendidly to the story. They surprised me and captured my heart. Though at some point it questions if there is a world beyond the one they know, the story doesn’t go deeper. Hopefully, we’ll read about that later, because it would be culturally interesting.
Conclusion Soulless brings back the golden age of dystopian fiction, with romance, action, and a rich cast of characters. Add a bit of mystery and cultism, and you have an astounding story that’ll leave you breathless.
Thank you, Hamley Books and Laura Dirkx, for the opportunity to read an eARC of Soulless.
