A tragic accident in paradise … or a calculated crime?

After her parents’ death in a car crash two years ago, Eve is back in the tumbledown family house on Magnetic Island, surrounded by nosy neighbours, an over-friendly possum and a cast of eccentric locals.

All Eve has left is her sister Tilly – not that she’s seen much of her lately, between Tilly’s history of disastrous relationships and her tendency to drink too much. And when Eve is introduced to her new boyfriend Matt, a sky-diving instructor and dead ringer for a young Richard Gere, she senses trouble.

Shortly after, a skydive goes wrong and Eve is left with a mountain of unanswered questions. Matt is the prime suspect as far as she is concerned, but proving it is another matter … especially after the cops rule it an accident. It doesn’t help when Eve’s ill-advised sleepover with Shane, the local cop, goes catastrophically wrong.

In trying to solve one mystery, Eve will uncover a far deeper secret hidden in the rocky outcrops of Magnetic Island – and put her own life on the line.

🌴Far North Queensland based author Nicole Crowe presents The Washup, a sun-soaked mystery tale set on beautiful Magnetic Island. Dark secrets are revealed in this thriller opening the doors to tragedy, grief, suspicion, the search for the truth and small-town politics.

🌴After the loss of her parents, Eve is called back home to Magnetic Island, where she hopes to find a sense of solace. However, Eve’s life is further complicated by the burgeoning —romance between her sister and a skydiving instructor, which sadly ends up in tragedy. Eve is certain this was no freak accident and she vows to find out the truth by launching her investigation. In doing so, Eve uncovers secrets that the island has tried to keep buried. It seems that this paradise has a very dark side.

🌴Wow, The Washup had me in its gasp from the very first page. What I appreciated about this one was the authentic spotlight placed on small town life. I found myself intrigued by the meddling neighbours, close community fold and the claustrophobia associated with life in a small township. Crowe’s prose matched the backdrop well, with her mix of humour and tension.

🌴In terms of the cast, Eve kept the pages turning. I found Eve’s situation in terms of the loss and tragedy she was gripping with to be relatable. Wider cast wise, I appreciated the inclusion of the unusual locals and the connected dialogue to their behaviour. Crowe’s sharp lens and observational tone gave this mystery novel a great edge, almost with a cosy tone. I know it had me thinking and theorising and guessing some more. I found it offered high entertainment value, wit, warmth and lots of setting envy! Just a fantastic mystery all round!

Nothing bad could happen on beautiful Magnetic Island, off the coast of Queensland right? Think again.

Eve is still, reeling from the death of her parents in a car crash 2 years ago and living in the family home. Her only relative is her sister Tilly who is finally starting to get her life together with a new love. A devastating accident will change everything forever, but was it really an accident or something more?

I devoured this book in an afternoon. I was caught up in the beautiful scenery, the eclectic characters and the mystery of what happened. Eve was a bit of a mess, drinking too much, not taking care of her house or self… the usual. But she was a character that I really liked, I felt for her and what was happening around her and in her past.

A fantastic debut from an Australian author to watch. Thanks so much to Pantera Press/Hardie Grant for having me on this book tour and the copy of the book to read. Out now and well worth a read.

Big thanks to Pantera Press for sending us a copy to read and review.
Magnetic Island is a magical setting and idyllic spot to visit.
Scratch the surface and the truth reveals itself in this crime fuelled plot.
Tragedy, loss and motive nestle among palm trees and sandy beaches.
Eve is still grieving the loss of her parents and the state of the family home and yard reveal she is suffering.
A sky diving tragedy compounds the grief and she seeks answers.
Suspicions and accusations arise while danger lurks in the foreground.
An ugliness to island life is about to be revealed and life threatening situations hover as Eve gets closer to the truth.
As a character Eve immediately came alive in my mind and her emotional baggage was felt.
The relationship she had with her sister and later with her sister’s partner very authentic.
A quick paced narrative that had me keen to know what happened.

Let me preface this by saying that I am not much of a crime reader ... but this book was one of the most ENJOYABLE things I have ever read. I had so much fun binging it. For starters, it was absolutely hilarious - I caught myself cackling the whole way through. Crowe's characterisation of the locals (whom I could picture and hear perfectly) and Eve really made the story. She has to be one of the most entertaining and relatable characters I have ever read. My favourite parts of this book were the nods towards things that only people from Townsville and Maggie will understand (I'm also with Telstra), and the orange in the bag, omfg. It was like watching a movie starring the long-lost locals you grew up with and somehow forgot. Not to mention the exquisitely crafted witty and comical dialogue!!!

This book is a MUST read for anyone in QLD (and outside of it lol).

With the stunning Magnetic Island as a backdrop, The Washup it a really interesting murder mystery debut

Eve isn’t exactly in a great spot in life, her parents died in a car accident a few years ago and her sister Tilly is a free spirit who she doesn’t see much of.

While she knows most of locals, Eve keeps mostly to herself.

Tilly arranges an out of the blue catch up where she introduces Eve to her newest boyfriend Matt, who is almost too smooth and too good to be true. Eve immediately senses he’s not good for Tilly and questions every thing about him

A trained skydiving instructor, Matt convinces Tilly to go for her first tandem sky dive. Having never shown interest in it before Eve is really surprised at her sister for wanting to do this

When the sky dive goes wrong, Eve’s world spirals as she tries to uncover the truth of what caused the accident.

A slow burn with an interesting lead protagonist. Eve is hurting and already feels so alone and doesnt want to let anyone else in

With many nosey and shady locals for side characters, I didn’t see the ending coming

This book is definitely worth your time. The characters are good, and feel real. The setting really feels like the places I know, and nothing broke the immersion as the book took me through twists and turns. I didn't see the end coming! There's genuinely funny stuff in here too, that awkward satire of people pushed into places they're not familiar with. I like this genre, and I hope to see more.

This book was so much fun! It’s a murder mystery set on Magnetic Island in Queensland, Australia, and it had me hooked straight away. I’m normally more of a fantasy and sci-fi reader, but I loved this, especially how it blended more serious and suspenseful murder and crime elements with a hefty dose humour. I knew Nicole was great at comedy from previously reading her blog, so I really enjoyed seeing that come through again in this. The book made me laugh out loud several times, most especially the references to dream-catchers (avoiding saying more due to spoilers!).

The main character, Eve, has recently lost her parents and is living in their old house on Magnetic island. When tragedy strikes again in the form of a tragic skydiving accident, she finds herself untangling the complicated truth of exactly what happened. She's delightfully bold and unpredictable, but also loveable and relatable, and she had me cheering her on even in her craziest moments. I especially liked her relationship with her best friend Sandra and the childhood-friend-turned-cop, Shane.

One of the things I loved most about this novel, though, was the setting. Although I’ve been to other Australian beachside communities and islands, I’ve never been to Magnetic Island, and now I really want to go (I want to do the same walk Eve and Sandra do regularly in the book). The whole story was imbued with the feel of that place and the culture of a small and quirky island community where everyone knows everyone. I also liked seeing how there was a difference between the people on the island and the people on the mainland in terms of the way they saw themselves and each other, given the two are only connected by an intermittent ferry service.

As an Australian living overseas, I also felt intense nostalgia and homesickness for some of the types of Australians and places this book so authentically and amusingly portrays. The audiobook narrator also did an great job of voicing it and getting all the accents just right.

So basically, I devoured this in the space of a couple of days, and can highly recommend it if you like murder mysteries set in unique locations with a dash of comedy.

After the tragic loss of her parents, Eve returned to her crumbling family home on Magnetic Island, where the tropical beauty hides deep scars and even deeper secrets. She is surrounded by quirky locals, nosy neighbours and Peanut, an overly friendly possum and the lushness of the island. Eve’s only anchor is her sister, Tilly, and she is chaotic at best. Tilly’s love life and heavy drinking keep them at arm’s length. When Tilly’s new boyfriend, Matt, a charming skydiving instructor, enters the picture and announced they are engaged, Eve’s instincts tell her there is trouble about, and it’s all linked to Matt.

Her suspicions turn deadly when a skydive goes catastrophically wrong. The police call it an accident, but Eve isn’t convinced. Haunted by grief of her parents and now her sister, and continually being dismissed as unstable as she had not dealt with her parent’s death at all, Eve decided to take matters into her own hands. This is where her own suspicions and questions start to uncover long-buried secrets that tie the community, her family, and Matt together in ways she would have never imagined. Even though the coronial investigators dismiss all of her worries and questions, it is local cop Shane and her friend Sandra who more open to her amateur investigation. Yet there belief in eve is not without caution; many of the questions and subsequent actions of eve centre spiralling into the hands of danger, where she started to confront not only the truth behind the skydiving fall but the emotional freefall of loss and trust betrayed and some of the real crime happening on the island.

The setting of the book is a flourishing and lush backdrop of Queensland’s Magnetic Island. , this crime-tinged family drama is packed with suspense, summer heat, and gasp-worthy twists. With its blend of grief, resilience and mystery, it’s the perfect holiday read. Thanks to #hardiegrantbooks and #bookouture for the #gifted copy and a spot on the #booktour.

🌿The Washup by Nicole Crowe🌿

This book had me hooked from the very first chapter with its mix of tragedy, secrets, and island atmosphere 🌺

Eve returns to her family home on Magnetic Island after losing her parents, only to find herself surrounded by eccentric neighbours, emotional baggage, and her unreliable sister, Tilly. When Tilly’s new boyfriend, Matt, shows up, all charm and mystery, Eve’s gut tells her he is bad news. And when a skydiving accident rocks the island, she is determined to get to the truth, no matter who she has to cross.

This book has such a strong sense of place. The descriptions of the island, the humidity, the wildlife, the endless ocean, make it feel like a character in itself. Eve’s voice is sharp and relatable, the characters feel real, flaws and all, and I appreciated the raw look at grief and sibling bonds. It is more of a slow-burn mystery than a high-octane thriller, but that actually worked for me and I devoured it in a couple of sittings.

If you love your mysteries served with a side of salt air, family drama, and the occasional overly friendly possum 🙈, this might just be your next coastal escape read 🌴🌊

Since her parents’ deaths, Eve has struggled. She still lives in the family home and is unable to bring herself in clearing the possessions they used to once own. What gives her comfort though, is her sister Tillie.

Tilly is notorious for being the party animal. The sister that refuses to accept responsibilities. When Tilly introduces Eve to her new boyfriend, Matt, she notices the big changes in Eve. Shes a completely different person.

When a terrible accident occurs though, Eve has 101 questions to ask and no one to answer them. It doesn’t take her long to uncover some terrible secrets and find out the truth to what has happened.

I truly felt for Eve during this story… it takes resilience and courage to get back up after being knocked down so many times! With some people by her side, she puts one foot in front of the other and decided to find out exactly what happened before it’s too late.

I really enjoyed this so much! Particularly the setting, the vibe and how everything came together in the end.

Thank you @nicolecrowewrites, @hardiegrantbooks and @panterapress for allowing me to be part of this tour 🥰

Poor Eve has had a rough time on Magnetic Island in the last few years.
Her parents died in a car crash 2 years ago, her sister Tilly is a bit of a mess, with her drinking and relationship dramas, and Eve is finding it hard to keep on top of everything.
Her neighbours are a tad nosy, and the animals that frequent her house are almost taking over, especially the possum! Although he does sound pretty cute.

And now, Tilly has a new boyfriend and wants Eve to meet him.
But Matt seems overbearing, and Tilly has changed... everything about herself for him.
When a skydive goes horribly wrong and Eve witnesses it, there are so many questions, and Matt is at the heart of them.

This is a fab read. It has all the island vibes, mysteries to solve, suspense, family drama, loss, and plot twists to scramble your brain.
Just when you think you have all the answers, you are proven wrong....again!

Yep, this is a great summer read that will have you turning pages quicker than it takes to make and enjoy the must-have daquiri.

A debut Aussie crime tale, The Washup (2025) by Nicole Crowe, is set on Magnetic Island, in Far North Queensland. Two years after her parents were killed in a car accident and still grieving, Eve returns home. Her estranged sister Tilly has changed and is now settled and engaged to the owner of a skydiving business. A tragic ending to a tandem parachute jump kills Tilly and is investigated by the Air Safety authorities. Yet, Eve cannot accept their findings as she believes Tilly’s fiancé, Matt is to blame. Although a crime mystery read, the majority of the narrative is focused on Eve’s grief and search for answers before a somewhat jarring second crime element is added for a potentially deadly finale. Overall, it's an ordinary murder mystery with a promising premise that didn’t quite live up to its potential, with a three star read rating. As always, the opinions herein are totally my own, freely given and without any inducement.

This was a really fun read! The setting, the characters, the dialog, he'll even the descriptions and personalities of the wildlife made me smile throughout. I haven't read a whodunnit in 15-20 years but this had me hooked and I finished it in 3 days. Bloody well done by a new author. Great read whether you know Maggie/Townsville or not

Eve lives on Magnetic Island in her childhood home after the death of her parents. Her little sister Tilly invites her to meet her new boyfriend (who turns out to actually be her fiancee) and Eve doesn't trust Matt at all. When Tilly and childhood friend Jack die in a skydiving accident not long after, Eve is determined to prove they were murdered, and Matt is top on her list of suspects.
This was ok. I found myself getting bored at times as Eve was quite irritating and too quick to jump to conclusions without any evidence to back her up. She was truly a bit of a hot mess lol. I enjoyed the island setting though, and the side characters were great. Fucking Bruce was a bloody weirdo though hahaha. The drugs thing was meh - I never really enjoy drug busting type thrillers personally. This is a debut though, and I definitely think this author has talent! I would read future books by her :)

Ok listen, but Eve is a bit bizarre. Her sister just dies and she crawls into bed with a policeman and bites him?

Described as "quirky crime" ... this is the perfect description. There's trauma and grief, mystery and suspense. But so many quirky funny moments I actually laughed out loud.

Set on Magnetic Island, Eve is still grieving her parent's deaths when tragedy strikes again. Another shocking incident makes her question ... is it an accident, or a calculated crime.

My verdict: A wonderful debut and I look forward to more from this author!
