The Nanny Outside the Gates

Rate this book
Auschwitz, 1944. With trembling hands, Halina unfolds the letter hidden in the book her mother left her, then drops it with a strangled cry. The letter contains the answers she’s always searched for—and puts her in unimaginable danger…

Forced to work as a nanny for a Nazi officer living just outside the imposing gates of Auschwitz, Halina clings to the two people who bring her comfort in the enemy’s world. Jewish prisoner Gavriel, who she sneaks food, medicine and soft words to—and who, in return, gives her his trust, a shoulder to cry on, and the strength of his warm, calloused hand in hers. And sweet baby Flora, who sleeps like an angel in her arms…

Officer Schafer’s cold blue eyes and twisted sneer leave her terrified for Flora—and his wife’s neglect of her baby borders on cruel. As she gazes at the little baby who’s wrapped her chubby fingers around Halina’s heart, she vows to protect the innocent child from the monsters surrounding her.

But Halina was raised an orphan, and when she discovers a letter tucked into a book her mother left her, her fragile peace shatters. Because the letter reveals her mother was Jewish. And Halina is working in the enemy’s home, just a stone’s throw from the prison they’d lock her in if they knew the truth.

Plunged into terrible danger, Halina knows she must run before she’s discovered. But how can she abandon Gavriel—the man she’s come to love—and little Flora? Can she find a way to save them too, no matter what it costs? Or will she be forced to make an unspeakable choice?

An unputdownable, addictive World War Two page-turner which will make your heart sing with hope even as you reach for the tissues. Perfect for fans of The Midwife of Auschwitz, The Choice and The Tattooist of Auschwitz.

I tell myself I have read enough Holocaust stories to last 2 lifetimes, and there will be no more. However, every time I see this author's name, I promptly change my mind. Ryan is a talented storyteller. I think I have read every one of her books. All are brilliant. This was no exception. It is an emotionally told story about a nanny, a Jewish prisoner & a Nazi officer and his family. The characters are all well-developed. The author portrays the nanny and the prisoner as lovable, decent people. I found myself barracking for them. One word describes this novel - fabulous. Congratulations, Shari- you have done it again!

I was really invested in this story. I cried for the main characters, the horrific way they Weretreated. My heart broke for the children, for the way they felt scared and not loved. I was angry that they were taught the nazi doctrine. But most of all i was proud of the adult Main characters and their strength. A absolutely must read. Thank you to netgalley for letting me read this e arc in exchange for an honest opinion

This is my first book by this Author and I got through this in one sitting. I was hooked from page one. The characters in this novel are what really stood out to me. Felt very real and easy to like/love/hate depending on who.

Brief rundown of the plot with no spoilers…The Germans have invaded Poland and Polish Jews are already in concentration camps for no crime whatsoever but in the eyes of the Nazis being “Jew Rats” - just disgraceful. To be eradicated like vermin.

A young Polish woman (Halina) is caught by a high ranking SS Officer in the 40 mile “buffer” zone around Auschwitz, one of the many death camps where millions lost their lives needlessly. She has chased a child from the orphanage she grew up in and quickly tells the child to run back whilst she is being questioned.

Said SS Officer needs a Nanny for his 2 children, baby and another baby on the way, She is essentially taken in as a slave. She has no family of her own, orphaned as a baby.

Jewish prisoners with certain skills are used to do work in and around the homes of the camp staff and families. Our Nanny Halina meets a gutsy handsome prisoner working on a new attic for the family called Gavriel.

They are not allowed to speak or interact but find ways to anyway…..then this becomes a powerful story of not just love against all odds but triumph over all odds. It’s not mushy love. It’s the real stuff where you see all parts of somebody as there is nowhere to hide. It’s precious and also incredibly dangerous for them both. A slave worker brought over from the camp to work for a day found breaking a rule will be killed - instantly.

Through the eyes of the prisoners it’s told of their horrors, suffering, torture, starvation and unbelievable cruelty. BUT the Author has not used this for shock value but to share exactly what “life” and death was in these camps. Our Nanny begins to also learn of the truth of these death camps and the realisation that many Polish Jewish friends she had could have met their fate there or elsewhere. Simply because they are Jewish.

There is a lot of storytelling here and my review not doing it justice. We get insight into the cruelty of the SS that occurred often in their own wives and children behind closed doors which is a major theme in the book. Trying to protect the children and baby it’s a game of wits to stay in the home without punishment for Halina. Prior Nannies “just leave” hmmm….more about that when you read the book.

“From the time Hitler’s army invaded Poland, I wondered what type of life the members of the Nazi regime were living. My mind has painted pictures of them laughing over torturing innocent people. They must sit at their dinner table with their families, calling the Jews a threat. I’ve seen how quickly belief becomes a weapon, and how easy it is to teach cruelty as a duty to their kind. People aren’t born monsters, but they can be weak enough to become them, I suppose.”

The characters are amazing. I was rooting for all the Jewish characters in the book, how they’d give their last morsel of bread to someone weaker despite their own hunger and suffering. How they tried so hard to hold onto dignity. The Author did these brave Jewish prisoners proud in her telling of the stories that interweave in this book.

So much more to it than I can put here. Some brilliant reveals and twists. The words just flowed from start to finish and I was fully hooked. You will be cheering on the underdogs and crying out for justice as you read this book. The wife of the SS Commander is a key character and I loved the twists the Author took me on with her. Unexpected!

Hallina’s personal life discovery was extra powerful!

The way these households were run, like it’s all normal to be living near the chimney stacks of a death camp that smoked constantly whilst you order your Jewish slave to make crustless sandwiches and bake cakes so you can impress the other Officer’s wives at your tea party. Whilst they are skin and bone, making food, serving food, throwing away food. Can you imagine? Worlds apart yet literally a few miles between. The contrast. Stark but it’s how it was.

If you find books set in these awful death camps hard to read, I understand, I do too, but this one does not have its focus on that. Just enough to let you know reality but it’s not the bulk of the book. In other words it’s lighter than some similar themed books I’ve read.

I felt so many emotions reading this and loved the ending. I’ve left a LOT out of my review on purpose as so much plot and people moments needs to be discovered for yourself.

Brief Personal Story….feel free to skip.

It’s just incredibly horrific that today there is still a huge hatred for Jewish people worldwide. Even worse - the holocaust deniers. I worked as a Recruitment Manager in Sydney Australia for years for a great Jewish/Australian couple and one of my best friends was at the birth of my child as a support person, was also Jewish.

I lived in Bondi for over 10 years and then in East St Kilda in Melbourne, both have a big Jewish community and these were just my friends, my neighbours, the lady I bought yummy meals from to take home after a long day at work. Just people - period. My deep ties to Bondi is what broke my heart with the recent massacre of Jews and non-Jews minding their own business. I was stunned to see on the news the bridge the father and son spent most time shooting from was the very bridge I’d walked over 100’s of times for my dusk walks on the beach. Surreal.

There has always been anti-semitism but now it’s at a ridiculous level. I don’t see people by their race, colour, religion etc….I judge you on YOU as a person. Too much hate in the world by a long shot.

Anyway….back to the book! Which is great! Did I mention good reveals and some great twists! Yes! Brilliant. This is a story of courage, determination, love and a fight against enemies all around. This would make a great movie.

If you like this type of novel go for it but if it’s not your usual thing I still recommend it! I grabbed it for something different for me and have zero regrets. A book you can devour in one sitting. It’s written in a way you get enveloped in and hold on to the very last pace. A solid 4 stars from me!

The Nanny Outside the Gates
By: Shari J. Ryan
Halina was raised in an orphanage and never knew her parents. She is working near Auschwitz caring for a child. When the child wanders, she is trying to find her, when a Nazi spies her and decides she is going to work for his family and watch his children. She must do this or end up in Auschwitz.
While working in his home with his aloof wife, Halina finds out more about his wife and children. She now has some inside information about the family. She also becomes award of a prisoner in the home and Gavriel is grateful for her help.
This novel is so emotional and I was completely invested in the main characters and a little child which will become critical to this story.

Halina, an orphan, finds herself working as a nanny for a Nazi officer residing just outside the gates of Auschwitz. Despite the dangers, she discreetly delivers food and medicine to the Jewish prisoners. Her lives are deeply intertwined with two prisoners, Gavriel and baby Flora, who touch her heart profoundly.

One day, Halina discovers a hidden letter in a book her mother left behind. The letter reveals her family’s Jewish heritage and warns her that if the Nazi officer’s family learns of her past, she will be imprisoned alongside the prisoners she cares for. Faced with this dire situation, Halina must make a desperate decision to escape before it’s too late.

“The Nanny Outside the Gates” by Shari J. Ryan is a heart-wrenching story of family, hope, and the power of compassion. As I read, tears streamed down my face, and I found myself reaching for the Kleenex box repeatedly.

Halina’s character resonated deeply with me, and I felt a strong connection to her journey. I was captivated by the story’s pace and couldn’t put it down until the very end. This phenomenal book is a must-read for anyone who enjoys historical fiction with emotional ties to amazing characters who are willing to risk their life to save others.

I'm forever in awe of Shari J. Ryan and her storytelling skills when it comes to the historical WWII/Holocaust genre. Each book is carefully crafted and handled like a precious relic from that time. With The Nanny Outside the Gates, my heart was in my throat once more as we witness the burgeoning strength and bravery of Halina and the man who captured her very soul, Gavriel. These two should have never even crossed paths, but fate lent a hand and offered what little comfort each needed to escape the brutality and cruelty at the hands of the Nazis.

I was riveted right from the start, as both Halina and Gavriel are stopped from escaping one night from their hell and then we go back in time a bit to the weeks before when they met for the first time. Halina's servitude to an SS officer and his family is the result of being out one day, far from her adopted home run by the marvelous Julia, as she is chasing another little girl who suddenly took off. She is the little bit of light to an otherwise horrible and very tense family life, run by a tyrant who threatens his wife almost daily. Then, when Gavriel shows up to work on an addition at the very house Halina is now a part of, they approach each other with caution, not to upset those watching their every move. But I could tell that as Halina starts to realize just how horrific Gavriel's time has been in Auschwitz, she would not only be his ultimate savior but, show him the love he so deservedly needed.

Ryan has a gift for allowing us to fully understand just what the prisoners of these death camps endured. It's not easy at times to grasp the evil that lurked within these Officers, paying no mind to snuffing out lives with the flick of a wrist. All these years later, it's still very hard to comprehend fully that one human being could be that dismissive of another human being, but knowing how important it is to never forget, I am grateful for Ryan and her need to bring these stories to the forefront.

Halina is truly a hero not only to Gavriel but to the little girls in her charge, who hopefully found the good in the world long after she escaped. All that Halina discovered within the walls of her hell was eye-opening to say the least and only solidified what she needed to do in order to find a way out. I applaud her moxie and know that at Julia's knee, she embraced compassion and always seemed to know the right thing to say whether to her 'boss' Ada in those final chapters or to Gavriel when he showed up battered and bruised. Either way, I was beyond proud of Halina and how she ultimately changed not only herself but this fractured family in the short time she was with them.

Another eye-opening account of what transpired more than 80 years ago, I thank Shari Ryan for keeping these stories at the forefront of our minds even in troubled times like these. They remind me that history must not repeat itself. And that in the end, despite all the pain and suffering endured by Halina, but especially Gavriel, Ryan's prose somehow still manages to warm my heart and soul with happiness that at times is bittersweet but no less beautiful.

The Nanny Outside the Gates is a must-read for anyone who wants a poignant tale of hope, courage and love. Sure, it will break you at times, but know that Shari J. Ryan always offers up a light at the end of the very dark tunnel and you'll find yourself smiling through your tears.

5 huge stars!

From the minute I finished the prologue, I was completely immersed in the story of Halina and Gavriel and I stayed up reading til 4 am this morning to finish the book and find out how it all ended. Author Shari Ryan wrote in such a way that I felt I was right there living the story with the characters.

It was a story of young Halina being in the right place at the wrong time. As a worker in an orphanage and orphan herself, Halina ran out after an upset child who was heading into a dangerous zone just outside the protected region where Auschwitz was located. Unfortunately, a high ranked Nazi officer saw her there and conscripted her into service as a nanny in his home inside the protected region. With no real say in the matter, Halina was brought into a home that was far from normal and given a set of rules she must follow or else risk unknown horrors. She is given no pay and is not allowed to speak to anyone in the home other than Ada, the officer's wife, and her charges - two young girls ages 5 & 11 as well as an infant of approximately ten months that appears to be developmentally delayed. Other workers in the house include Gavriel, a prisoner from Auschwitz with building skills, Kasia, a cook and cleaner, also from the camp and various Kapo's who brutally make sure their fellow prisoners toe the line

Nannies have come and gone before Halina's arrival, and she must work hard to care for her young charges in a loving way, while all around them is domestic disruption and abuse. Any mistakes could lead to her death, yet she and Gavriel soon develop contact and over time, strong bonds form between them, bonds that could potentially destroy them.

The focus of the book very much drew me to consider what type of people worked in the concentration camp and how their work affected their home life. Ryan was inspired by the true stories of those who survived both the war and their time working basically as slaves to the Nazi's. While Halina and Gavriel are not real people, the conditions that they lived and worked in were. With an element of suspense going back to the prologue, there were times as I read that I cried, felt short of breath and in fear of what would come next. It was gripping and terrifying all at once. This book will be an excellent read for those whe enjoy reading historical fiction novels set in WW2 and focusing on those who lived and worked in concentration camps or the homes of those who ran them. There is a folk story within the novel about the time when dogs, cats and mice were all friends and how circumstances changed so they became enemies. It is an object lesson that we all can learn from. I will definitely recommend this book to others.

Many thanks to #NetGalley and #Bookouture for allowing me to read an ARC of this novel. All opinions are entirely my own.

I received a copy of this book from the publisher/author to review for Stephanie's Book Reports.

This is a historical romance. If you have never read a historical fiction book that Shari J. Ryan has written, then you are missing some of the most amazing stories in that genre that I have ever read. This is the story of Halina. I am going to go ahead and warn you that I cry when I read this type of book. Every time!! This time is no different. Though I do believe that a good cry over a good book is great for your soul. Halina was raised in a orphanage. All her life she has wondered about her parents and now she finds herself working for the Natzi officer as a Nanny to his daughter Fiora. Their home is right outside the gates of the prison Auschwitz. Despite all the danger she would be in if anyone ever found out, she has met Gavriel and she takes food and medicine to the Jewish prisoners. He and Fiora mean more to her than anything in the world right now. But, when she discovers a hidden letter in a book that her mother left her, She learns that her family was Jewish and she knows is her past is found out she will be imprisoned right with the people she cares a whole lot for. She now knows that she is in a dire situation and it only gets worse. She is going to have to make a desperate decision and escape before it is to late. But what about Gavriel and Fiora?
I devoured this book. I could absolutely not lay it down. I could feel the air of danger around me when I was reading this book. Like I said my heart broke many times reading this one. But, that only added to the experience of reading this book. I think you would have to not have a heart for this book not to affect you. This is a story of danger, family, hope and a whole lot of compassion. It is a book that you do not want to miss.

From the moment I finished the prologue, I knew I wasn’t going to sleep until I found out how Halina's story ended. I was completely drawn in!

Halina’s story broke me in the best way possible. Raised in an orphanage and never knowing her parents, she tries to build a quiet life caring for children. But one impulsive act of compassion—chasing after a frightened child near Auschwitz—changes everything. Caught by a Nazi officer, she’s forced into service as a nanny for his children inside the heavily guarded zone. There, Halina walks a fragile line between kindness and survival, finding herself in a household full of tension, secrets, and quiet suffering.

And then there’s Gavriel, a prisoner from Auschwitz who’s been brought to the house to work. The moments between them are full of silent understanding, fear, and a growing tenderness that somehow blooms even in the darkest place imaginable. I found myself rooting for them with every turn of the page, even when I knew how dangerous their bond could be.

Shari J. Ryan has such a gift for writing about the Holocaust with both brutal honesty and immense compassion. She doesn’t shy away from the horror, yet somehow manages to show us the flickers of humanity that survived within it. Her characters feel so real that I could almost hear their voices—Halina’s quiet bravery, Gavriel’s resilience, and even the brokenness of the family she’s forced to serve. This book reminded me how much courage it takes to choose love and decency when surrounded by cruelty. Ryan captures that truth with heartbreaking clarity.

The Nanny Outside the Gates is a story that will stay with me for a long time. It’s not an easy read—but it’s an important one. If you love historical fiction that grabs you by the heart and doesn’t let go, this book is an absolute must-read.

💬 "I don't like hating people"

Shari J. Ryan has done it again. I've read a few of her books now, and she has this amazing ability to both destroy your heart and also restore your faith in how much love can achieve. All whilst writing wonderful (and hateful) characters, and historical storylines that probably could have really happened. What a skill.

I like to include my favourite quote from a book, whether it's something that "spoke" to me, or one that sums up the story. Sometimes there isn't one. This time it's had 5 phrases highlighted on my kindle, and choosing my favourite was not easy. I eventually settled on the one above because it was so simple and so poignant. It was said by the child of a Nazi in the book. I wonder if any of them had such thoughts in real life.

Shari's books often start at the end, I love this style of writing as it immediately draws me in to the story and captivates my imagination. The prologue was fraught with danger and we weren't yet sure who was running away or why.

When we think about the Holocaust we often focus on the Jewish victims, who were of course the biggest group. But there were countless other victims, the like of whom were in this book. I especially liked how it showed that the families of Nazis could be victims, although not quite in the same way.

Whilst it is set against the horrendous backdrop of Auschwitz, this was ultimately a story about love and resilience and how good will overcome evil. I really hope that the children went on to lead happy, healthy, hate free lives.

Shari is a must read author for me.

Shari has done it again with spectacular storying telling of a heartbreaking time full of darkness that was weaved with hope and bravery. Halina and Gavriel started out as two very different people that had more in common than their upbringing’s portrayed. These two were such amazing people and the way they had to maneuver trying to survive was admirable because they had so much strength and resiliency even when they felt like they were doomed with no way out. Halina became more bold as the journey continued and my heart was in my throat so many times. This book kept me on the edge of me seat from start to finish and I didn’t want to put it down because I just had to know if they were going to make it to the other side. The children in this story and Julie tugged on my heartstrings and they consumed my thoughts during every scene they were in. The twists and turns kept me engrossed in every page. This story should be read for those alone. Shari broke me in ways that were necessary but the breathtaking way she healed me by the end was priceless. The Nanny Outside the Gates is another book that will stay with me long after the final line was read!

In this emotionally intense story, readers follow Halina, an orphan raised near the Auschwitz death camp, as she is hired by a Nazi officer to work as a nanny or be sent into the camp. Risking her life every single day, Halina tries to do good and protect the children, especially baby Flora, in her care, and Gavriel, a Jewish prisoner working in the officer’s home. One day, however, Halina discovers a letter from her mother hidden in a book that reveals that her mother was Jewish, putting her in even more danger. Desperate to find a way out of her situation and a way to save Gavriel, Halina must keep her secrets safe and find her courage in this powerful novel from Shari Ryan. The characters are the absolute stars of the book and pull readers into this complex and detailed narrative. The depth of detail is astounding and ups the emotional stakes of Halina’s desire to escape her current employment, and the multiple characters offer a lot of insights into different experiences at and around Auschwitz. Packed with detail, emotionally intense, and powerfully written, historical fiction fans will be totally immersed in this new World War II novel from Shari Ryan.

Thank you to NetGalley for letting me read this! I admit that when I saw it being promoted on Bookouture’s instagram I started obsessively refreshing their NetGalley page every day with fingers crossed until the book finally appeared. And it was worth the anticipation! Utterly gripping story from start to finish, and I loved how when I read the final chapter I didn’t know if this was a book which called for a sequel, or a book which would be wrapped up in an epilogue, and I won’t spoil which one it is.

Halina was a brilliant character and I enjoyed the fact that most of the book was spent in the Schaffer’s house, on the outskirts of Auschwitz, with very few chapters in the camp itself. It made for an interesting and unique setting! I also found Ada to be a fascinating character and was intrigued to see if she could be redeemed, or if she was too far indoctrinated into the Nazi way.

The final few chapters were wonderfully suspenseful. This was a fairly short read which was great because I was barely able to put it down once I’d begun! I must find more from this author now too.

Once again, for me, we have a gripping read set during the Holocaust. Who is Halina? Which concentration camp do we find her near? Who is Flora, and how does Halina know her? What do we learn about Officer Schafer and his wife? Having taken a college course called the Holocaust and Other Genocides, I pick up these books when I find them. Officer Schafer partially made me dislike my own heritage, as I read how he dealt with his sense of entitlement; he felt he was due. Who is Gavriel, and how does Helena meet him? The resiliency of the Jewish people who survived the Holocaust is always an inspiration to me. It also reminds me of or makes me think of what is happening now, my heartfelt sorrow for the children in the story, much like those currently in detention centers in the United States. Sometimes, when reading historical books, it feels like we have not learned from the past period. Enjoy the read

This is a novel taking place during WWII, the storytelling takes us to Poland. This book is about Halina and Gavriel. Halina has been living in a church, where she was raised, very close to a checkpoint of the SS. Halina Wojic is caught by the SS and ends up at Schäfer's house. Halina is to take care of his children as a nanny, a role that will seem rather complicated. The Schäfer household is very close to Auschwitz. Halina meets Gavriel who's a prisoner having lost a lot of his family is working on Schäfer's house. The storys reflects on the horrors of WWII, many people are being captured, killed and ending up in Auschwitz. Halina is doing her best to cope and takes big risks to stay alive. It is a fight of survival and to save themselves. There are twists and turns in this book that makes the story even more suspenseful and heartbreaking. I can definitely recommend this read being a page turner with links to history and the past.

Every time I start one of Ms Ryan’s books, I hold my breath and pray she won’t break my heart. This story is absolutely gut wrenching. This book, like her others, weaves a story so heart breaking you can literally feel the characters pain and suffering through the pages.

It is a poignant reminder of what The Holocaust truly was about. It was a time of despair. A time when hatred was taught simply for being different. A time when those who were persecuted held on to the memories of those they loved. They held on in hopes of a future they weren’t sure they would ever get.

For Gavriel and Halina, it was the worst of times yet, somewhere in this story, they found each other. But when truth comes to the light, will it save them or end them? What is the true cost of their freedom?

Another wonderfully written story of hope and perseverance in the midst of despair and tragedy. This is a must read for 2025.

The Nanny Outside The Gates by Shari J Ryan is a powerful, heart-breaking historical novel that consumed me from the start.
The action is set in 1943 in Poland, mainly in the house of an officer serving in Auschwitz. Shari J Ryan has perfectly captured the horrors of the time. The stark contrasts between those who have everything and still steal from those who have nothing. The picture painted of family life juxtaposed with the death camp.
There is the innocence of the children and the cruelty of their father. The children are not so clueless as to what is happening.
Within the home there are Jewish inmates from Auschwitz working, along with a Nanny who was plucked from the streets. The young girls are not supposed to talk with the Jewish people but they can spot true goodness.
The novel opens with the ending. Then, the reader is transported back three months before working towards the end. We know part of what is coming – but how will it all end?
We see the action alternating between Halina, the Nanny, and Gavriel, a Jewish man working in the house. Both have good hearts and feel for the three young girls. “I’ll have to protect the light in the children who’ve been raised by darkness.” Halina is a beacon of light shining in the dark. “Any child raised by a Nazi has already been taught to hate. Taught that they’re a superior race.” Halina’s innate goodness is seen by the girls. “Something in her eyes says she still believes in their innocence… That they’re worth saving.”
War changes people. “We all do what we can to survive.” Bonds are formed. Trust is in short supply, hopefully it is not misplaced. “We try to find hope in the grimmest of places.” Hope is what keeps people going.
We learn about the power of love. “Love is stronger than hate. Forgiveness is easier than staying angry.” Halina states “these children are being taught to hate when we were born to love.” I found this such a powerful statement.
All the characters were well drawn and believable. The leading two characters and the young daughters were easy to empathise with.
The Nanny Behind The Gates was such a powerful read. Shari J Ryan brings the characters to life with her descriptive pen.
This is a tale that needs to be read in memory of the six million who died, and of those who survived.
I will leave the final word with Halina:
“I believe there is good in everybody, even if it’s overshadowed with years of manipulation and hatred.”

Another gripping and haunting story of the lengths humans will go to hurt others and determination of people to live and survive. While everyone knows the story of WWII, this author has the ability to bring it to life to humanize the stories that we know. Halina is a nanny for a German officer whose wife is less than motherly. Gavriel is Jewish and in the camp as a prisoner. They meet and begin to care about each other. Halina finds a letter in a book her mother left her that informs her that she in fact is Jewish also. She knows that if she is found out she will be taken in to the camp also. She feels she needs to run. What will happen to Gavriel or the child she is caring for? Another emotional heartbreaking story of a time no one should forget.

The Nanny Outside the Gates was a very emotional, intense read. The topic is obviously a heavy one and I had to put it down and walk away a few times. Not because it wasn't good or wasn't holding my interest, but because it gets very raw at times. The author did a phenomenal job of portraying so many complex relationships. The conditions are horrendous but you see the relationship develop between Halina and Gavriel. Between Halina/Gavriel and the kids. Halina and Ada. Etc, There are so many layers. Highly recommend!!!

Thanks to NetGalley and the publisher for the advanced copy in exchange for my honest review.

Wow this was such a good book, I couldn't turn the pages quick enough! This is the story of Halina and Gavriel and their fight to stay alive during WW2. Halina is working (unpaid she was taken off of the street) in the house of a Nazi and his family taking care of their kids and Gavriel is in a prison camp and comes daily to the home Halina is in to do renovations. The story is cruel, brutal and heartbreaking but also has moments of hope and love. Shari J Ryan is a first class writer of WW2 fiction, she really knows how to hit you in the heart! I would highly recommend this book, it’s brilliant.

The Nanny Outside the Gate by Shari J. Ryan

Its summer 1943 near Auschwitz Concentration camp. Halina is randomly picked by Nazi Officer Shafer to be a Nanny to his three daughters, Isla, ten, Marlene, five and Flora, ten months. While looking after the three girls Halina meets Gavriel, a Jewish prisoner from Auschwitz who is working on an extension on the top floor at the Shafer house.

Halina almost instantly falls in love with Gavriel and the feeling is mutual. Now Halina will do anything to escape the Shafer’s with Gavriel no matter how impossible it may be.

The Nanny Outside the Gates is a vivid tale of one of the darkest times in history, a gripping journey of suspense, love, hope, and courage. Heart pounding, tears falling, turning pages as fast as I could, extreme realism blurred the lines between truth and fiction. Unforgettable characters play out an unpredictable story, with an ending as surprising as it is satisfying. Halina and Gavriel will find a permanent place in your heart and on your bookshelf. I look forward to more from this author.

Halina is forced into servitude for a Nazi family. She’s brought into their home to be a nanny to their children. It was either that or be sent to Auschwitz (which was right across the street). There are other prisoners working for the family and Halina builds relationships with them.

Shari’s books are out of this world. I like that it’s single timeline. We see only Halina’s current timeline and what she goes through to save herself, Gavriel and Flora. Shari’s books are always emotional and this one was no different. It really pulled on the heartstrings. I couldn’t put it down.

Thank you NetGalley and Bookouture for my copy of this book.

Oh my goodness what a book it certainly had everything. It had everything romance, heartbreak and suspense.

The story from the moment I started to read it I know I was going to enjoy the book. Seeing the hardship that the prisoners had to endure, they were strong and how many of them that survived this was amazing but the ones who died was such a tragedy. I liked the main character she was strong and knew to treat everyone as equal.

I wondered how it would end but I really liked the ending it was a really nice ending.

I enjoyed every minute of reading the book and it was well written.

Would recommend this book.

my 1st book read of Shari Ryan

I’ve been enjoying reads of WWII now for some years and thanks to kindle suggestions stumbled across Shari’s book. I loved the angle on inside the German household but yet from the persons account by chapter it really helps build the story depth. We know how horrific the camps and daily occurrences went but I’ve never thought or read what it may have been like as a family member living in a house of a ranking officer. I knew there were plenty of good Germans through the books I’ve read but this story was a different look at the tragic period. Looking forward to readying more of Shari’s books!

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️.5

The novel was amazing! 🏆

Sooo fast paced and full of drama, I read this in 2 sittings as I couldn’t put it down!

A heartbreaking story of a young woman, whom is orphaned herself, that’s then forced to work as a nanny for a Nazi German family. Her tale of survival is nothing short of mesmerising. It’s so hard to even contemplate what people went through during WW2.
Shari does a fantastic job at capturing moments and filling them with raw emotion.

A brilliant book that will be released on the 7th October! Highly recommend you get yourself a copy 💘

Shari Ryan has done it again. She has written a beautiful but always difficult story that had me tearing up and getting angry at the injustices heaped upon innocent people (adults and children alike). Her words are beautifully healing while bringing us into the pain and suffering that the main characters feel and the challenges they must face during this terrible time in history. I found myself needing to distance myself because you can see how easily these atrocities can become so prevalent even in today's world. I love this authors historical fiction because she brings us stories that COULD and probably DID happen and gives us an ending that is happier despite the pain.

A beautifully written and heartfelt novel of hope, love and courage, where three lives intertwine and embark on a unforgettable journey. Shari J. Ryan skilfully writes emotional stories about the world’s darkest times to ensure we never forget the horrors of the past, and The Nanny Outside the Gates is no exception. A highly recommended book. 5 stars
