In the year 2101, death isn’t the end—it’s the beginning.
In a world where death is only temporary, every human is born with an axion—an organ that resurrects them once and grants a supernatural ability known as a spark. For most people, it’s a second chance. For Hugo, it becomes something else entirely.
After someone close to him is murdered by a masked killer known only as the Dragon, Hugo is pulled into a world of violent powers, hidden systems, and people who know exactly how to use them. Driven by grief and a need for answers, he sets out to hunt the killer…only to realize he can’t survive alone.
A reckless optimist with shifting, weaponized limbs. A cynical investigator who isn’t afraid to break the rules to get results. An alien inventor who may hold the key to defeating the Dragon. Together they form an unexpected but unshakable bond—one that might be strong enough to stand against impossible odds.
What begins as a single murder unravels into something far worse: corporations built on buried secrets, back-alley deals, and a trail that always leads back to the Dragon. Each encounter peels back another layer of his terrifying powers: talons that slice through steel, scales that deflect bullets…and something even more dangerous behind the mask.
In a world where everyone only gets one second chance, failure isn’t an option.
Because if Hugo loses, there’s no coming back this time.

A Masterful Blend of Sci-Fi Thrills and Emotional Depth
"No More Second Chances" is an exemplary revenge thriller that seamlessly integrates near-future science fiction with profound themes of loss, resilience, and human connection. Set in the year 2101, where the innovative concept of the axion, an organ granting a single revival and a unique supernatural ability redefines mortality, the narrative follows protagonist Hugo on a relentless quest for justice after a devastating personal tragedy. The author's world-building is impeccable, painting a vivid neon-lit landscape filled with organ-trading casinos, corporate intrigue, and high-stakes pursuits that keep the reader engaged from the first page.
What elevates this novel is its richly developed characters, who form a compelling "found family" amid the chaos. Hugo's grief-driven determination is balanced by his allies: a resourceful optimist with transformative appendages, a pragmatic investigator unafraid of ethical gray areas, and an inventive alien whose ingenuity proves pivotal. Their interactions are authentic and layered, fostering an unshakable bond that underscores the story's emotional core. The antagonist, the enigmatic Dragon, is portrayed with chilling precision, his escalating revelations adding layers of tension and unpredictability.
The pacing is brisk yet deliberate, delivering a series of twists that challenge assumptions and heighten the stakes. Themes of second chances and the cost of revenge are explored with nuance, prompting reflection without sacrificing momentum. This is a novel that excels in blending action-packed sequences with heartfelt moments, making it a standout in the genre.
I wholeheartedly recommend "No More Second Chances" to enthusiasts of speculative fiction and thrillers. It earns a well-deserved five stars for its originality, emotional resonance, and gripping execution.
No More Second Chances by Laura Jean Voigt is an absolutely thrilling ride from beginning to end. For fans of high-stakes adventure and page-turning mysteries, this book pulls you in from the very first chapter and never lets go.
Set in the year 2101, Laura crafts an epic futuristic world where every person is born with an axion—an organ that revives them once after death and unlocks a supernatural ability known as a spark. It’s such a fascinating concept, and the story explores it in a way that feels both inventive and grounded. But when a masked serial killer known as the Dragon begins targeting that very “second chance,” the stakes skyrocket.
Hugo is a compelling protagonist, driven by grief and fury after someone close to him is murdered. His hunt for the Dragon takes readers through neon-lit cityscapes, murder investigations, organ-trading casinos, prison breaks, and powerful corporations built on secrets. Along the way, he’s joined by an unforgettable cast of allies—a reckless optimist with lethal, shifting appendages, a rule-breaking private investigator, and a daring alien inventor who may hold the key to defeating the Dragon. Their dynamic adds heart and depth to an already intense story.
Each encounter peels back another layer of the Dragon’s terrifying power, and the tension only builds as Hugo faces the reality that he has only one second chance of his own. From the first chapter to the epilogue, every page is intriguing, keeping you guessing and fully invested.
This book is packed with action, emotion, twists, and incredible worldbuilding — and for readers wondering, there’s no spice, making it a great choice if you prefer your stories focused purely on plot and character without romantic content.
A definite 5/5 read that we’d recommend to anyone who loves futuristic thrillers with heart and high stakes.
This could be a single season anime and get good reviews. Picked it up off TikTok and it’s a pleasant surprise.
I would compare it to some of the better RPGmaker games out there, very similar kind of travel between towns story, a casino adventure, lots of fights, believable injuries and physical consequences, and a bunch of mysteries that slowly get unraveled.
There are some flashback scenes that I don’t think need to be in the book. The kind where it happens in response to some reveal in the present tense. A lot of the later ones aren’t necessary to hit the same effect IMO and drags it out some. That wordage I think could have been spent on character or simpler mystery depth. That is one thing, the mysteries aren’t all that “deep”, and some are glossed over a little too much, but that’s not actually bad for the story, its just not the story being told. And the story that IS told is good!
The dialogue can be a bit bland too, but it’s not like it’s bad, just a little wordy. I did enjoy how both hero and villain gets punished for monologuing.
The circumstances of everyone meeting is mostly earned, if maybe a bit simple, but nothing that jumps the shark.
I will say this, the police are USELESS in this story except for the one random crazy cop, and there was a perfect chekov’s rocket launcher hinted at that didn’t get fired :’(
Loved it! The writing was easy to follow, I loved the world building within it. Great character developments throughout && The story was great, each page I was excited to see what happened next! All loosen ends were tied together perfectly by the end!
This was a fun read, with lots of action, and an interesting concept. Just when you think you are going to figure out what is going on, something else happens and you are pulled back in. The characters are interesting, as is the world building.
