Oath-sworn to help those in need, Yvonne has been framed for murder.
Tracking down those responsible for the destruction of the Stone Walls was a difficult enough task, but someone has made it much harder. The King is dead, and Yvonne is accused of his murder.
With the peace of the lands in balance, and separated from Guise, Yvonne is forced to flee, alone, and seek help from an unusual band of allies to try and clear her name.
Can she find the real killer, and clear her name, before the mastermind causes more devastation?
The Searching continues Yvonne’s story which started in The Gathering. If you like your fantasy with plenty of mystery and magic, and a strong heroine, you’ll want to continue this fantasy series by Vanessa Nelson.
I am a fantasy author living in Scotland, United Kingdom and spending my days juggling the demands of an elderly, spoiled cat, three giant dogs and fictional characters.
As far as the cat is concerned, she’s in charge and should always come first. The older dog lets me know when he isn’t getting enough attention by chewing up the house. The middle dog’s favourite method of getting my attention is a gentle nudge with his head. At least, he would say it’s gentle. And the younger dog's attention-getting method generally involves playing with the loudest squeaky toy he can find.
3.5/5.0 It was a really good story and I was glad that there was at least a little forward movement between Yvonne and Guise!! I found I was a bit bored and anxious to finish this book, however, and I decided it must be because it has taken two complete book’s focus to defeat one single villain. With nothing much else going on, it just became kinda laborious and I was ready for it to end already.
Still love the characters and the world, though, so I must read the final installment!
P.S. Would someone PAHLEASE convince the author to change out those freaking cover models? Good grief, we’ve spent five books reading about Yvonne’s long dark hair that is so full, she has to keep it in a braid. And Guise as a light gray-skinned goblin with long black hair for heaven’s sake! So WHAT are these two models doing on the covers?!?!? It’s stinking infuriating I tell ya.
While the last book was a bit of a transition book, this one dialed it up. I loved it. The rending is terrifying, I think I hate Will, and I'm excited to see how the last book wraps things up. Also, I cried for Guise.
Also, there was some lovely relationship moments with Guise and Yvonne here, which was a nice bit of icing on the cake.
Re-read March 2025 Definitely hate Will. That guy is a narcissistic piece of shit. I said it in a highlight comment, but I'm going to repeat it here: Yvonne and Guise should have slit his throat in the barrow and called it a day. No one like that should be put in charge of a Port-a-potty, much less a kingdom.
These books are fast reading, something is happening all the time, either action or great interactions between characters. No complaints, very good read
If, like me, you thought Hiriam was the Big Bad and are confused how the ending happened and there's another book, we're in good company together. A nagging sense bothers me at the end of each book and I've finally hit on what it is: the final battle wraps up VERY quickly. In every book.
Looking at it from a visual way, the endings would barely be 5 minutes on a screen. They're concise, often to the point and more quippy then anything else.
This isn't an issue persay, but does make one feel unfulfilled. The rest of the book is a drawn out 'gather allies and make a plan' adventure. To no one's surprise Yvonne is not as friendless as the cover copy would suggest nor quite as resource less.
I do want to know what is up with Will and Ulla. I liked Ulla before, but she's downright DANGEROUS this book (along with Sarra), not quite understanding the actual gravity of the situation. So much necessary information is withheld! Constantly! As if no one ever learns from the mistake the first ten times. (This includes Guise).
I did enjoy this though, the deepening lore and bonds made. I look forward to the final book with hope that it all ties up satisfactorily.
I thought I would be annoyed/disinterested with Guise being gone for like half of the book, but I actually wasn't! I liked our lil girl group. The romance progression was good (still very slow and steady, as it should be in the context of the characters), and I liked the ending, though it did feel a tadddd bit too.. easy... or abrupt maybe?
This is a review for all 6 books in the series as I read them pretty much in one sitting. This was the first book I read of this author who is new to me. Let me now just say that Vanessa Nelson has become a favourite auto buy for me! This series blew me away, the characters and the interactions between people are what make a book for me, even more so than the plot. And these characters stayed with me long after I put the books down. I anticipate that this will be one of those rare series that I return to read again. The world building was delightful and intriguing, Yvonne was powerful, but not all consuming and she was humble and believable. She went through betrayals, set backs and triumphs and I lived through it all with her. Honestly these books were amazing, go read if you love any sort of fantasy (although I think these were pitched with an easy world to understand so you could be new to the genre), light romance (not the over riding story emphasis, but what there was was clean and delightful) and heartfelt characters.
Such a good book! The fifth and next to the last book in 'The Hundred' series continues with all the action, suspense, good magic, bad magic and strong group of friends searching for the blood magician and evil incarnate individual looking to take over one city at a time. Compelling reading for me as the writer, Vanessa Nelson, has a way with her words describing settings and actions just full enough without losing the impetus (and thus my attention) by overwriting. That is a sort of magic, I think. Looking forward to book six, "The Rising," the last in the series even though I hate to see it end.
We are drawing ever closer to wholeness for Yvonne and Guise.
She sees her parents on the streets of Royal City, and finds them largely unchanged. He arrogant, she conceding to his over-weaning ambition. And surprised to see their disowned daughter.
But there are bright spots too, as their circle of friends expands, even as the danger slinks closer. It is clearer why Yvonne is so closed off emotionally, and wonderful to see her extend her hands to Guise - even welcome him.
A well written story full of intrigue, mystery, action, adventure, magic and a slow burn romance. The main and secondary characters are unique, super likeable and make the story truly special and engaging. I wholeheartedly recommend it. It is a great treat and so worth reading. The books need to be read in order as there is a progression to the story. Enjoy! 💖
One of the best series I’ve read in a long time. I honestly am sad it’s over and I would love to see more tales from The Hundred, perhaps something set earlier in time with Elinor as the heroine. A story about Guise would also be fun. Every character was richly rounded out and interesting to get acquainted with. Thank you to Vanessa Nelson.
‘The Searching’ is book 5 of ‘The Hundred’. This book took a little longer for me to read. It’s not because it was boring-far from it. It was just a little exhausting because of the non-stop action, fighting, and the desparate search for several key individuals-both good and bad. After I take a breather, I’ll be ready for book 6.
The Searching, book five of The Hundred series, is an ebook I borrowed through Kindle Unlimited (KU). The stretch of evil over the country strikes directly at Yvonne, accused of murdering the King of Valland. The writer is a master of pacing and smoothly guides her characters from one story to the next. I'm looking forward to the next book to see how the saga ends.
Usually, after five books, I'm beginning to get weary of a series. Generally because it has reached a point where there is nothing new. Not so with this series.
It seems that at the end of all the stresses of combating evil doing that everything seems to be settled in peace. What injector the Hunar and her partners. Maybe we will see .
This has been one of the finest series I've read in years and I'm 64. The story, the characters, the writing are all extraordinary. I thank the author for many hours of fine reading.
I am five books into the series can barely take time to sleep they are that good. They need to have some editing but otherwise they are really exceptional
