A necessary book for the times we are living in. Mental health is one of the major issues of our generation, and the church needs to be open to helping those who are going through such struggles. Any one of us can face situations like these, and there should be no stigma attached to them. I appreciate the book’s Christ-centered approach, its practical solutions, the fact that it is scientifically grounded, and the many biblical examples that reinforce the authors’ arguments. Extremely relevant and timely—I will also be writing an article about it on my blog.
An outstandingly practical and helpful book on anxiety, depression, negative thoughts, burnout, and other ailments that affect the mind.
Grounded Biblically, with real life stories from Craig’s life told with honesty and humility.
Each section closed with a chapter written by Craig’s therapist, Dr. Wayne Chappelle. These were maybe the most helpful aspect of the book, with real tangible steps towards healing various mental constraits that hold you back.
I’m always going to love a book by pastor Craig. But this is a necessary book. A pastor partnering with a clinical psychologist and opening up on his own struggles with mental health is rare. As Craig covered in the book mental health is too often ignored in society and especially in church among Christians. I’m in my 40s and never thought I needed to talk about mental health until the last few years. And a lot of friends my age have had similar experiences. You hit that certain age and so many things hit you at once and you need help. Thank you Craig for tackling these issues. Thank you for writing this book and being open and honest about your own. I hope lots of people read this book and think about and talk about what is covered and share it with others.
Love reading Craig’s work. Simple to follow, consistently adding scripture along with his thoughts and is challenging as well. Loved his testimony on the subject as well as combating many issues that Christians have and can change our mindset on a variety of topics. HIGHLY RECOMMEND
✨The vibes: - Christian nonfiction - Mental health - combines Bible and Science
“Your emotions are valid, but they’re not permanent. Your situation feels hopeless, but with God, there’s always hope.”
✨ My thoughts: This book dives into 6 major areas of mental health: anxiety, depression, negativity, anger, trauma, and burnout. The book addresses these areas on a clinical level, but also a spiritual level and it gives practical tips that are rooted in science but also rooted in biblical principals. The author is a pastor but he has a cowriter - Dr. Wayne Chappell who is a clinical psychologist who adds in his expertise for every chapter.
✨ Mental health is a topic that is very relevant for most of us. Sometimes we see a division of science and Christianity, but I love how this book interconnects the two and explains how they both support each other. I also appreciated the approach that when it comes to mental struggles, you need that biblical truth, but you also need to know the science of what’s going on and how we can practically address that.
✨ This was so good. It gives hope, encouragement through darkness, and emphasized the importance of community. I support acknowledging the sovereignty of God while also incorporating clinical data and practical tips to improve mental health.
✨ This was such a win, and I highly recommend it. Audio was excellent, but note that there are reflection questions at the end of every chapter which has me recommended a physical paper version of this if you want to get the most of this book.
Craig Groeschel, together with his therapist (a clinical psychologist), explore six areas of mental health that Christians don't tend to talk about in helpful ways. Anxiety, depression, negativity, anger, trauma, and burnout are the six areas Craig himself sought professional help to overcome. While it doesn't seem uncommon for Christians to respond to such issues with internal thoughts (sometimes spoken) like, "Where's your faith?" or "If you prayed more...", Craig Groeschel and "Dr. C" are far more understanding. They have presented in this book so many helpful insights and suggestions that I felt faith rising regarding my own struggles in these areas. This book has given me tools that give me hope. And that's why it felt critical for me to make notes as I was reading of how to put this book into practice so that I wasn't left with just a good feeling. I have homework now, but it's hopeful homework that I believe will bring me closer to Jesus as the One who can truly help me to live what I learned from this book!
I felt an immediate connection with this book. It doesn’t just offer advice; it truly helps you navigate the weight of mental illness. Reading it felt like taking the first step toward healing my hurting mind. I highly recommend it to anyone seeking peace, understanding, and practical guidance for mental well-being.
This was a good, very quick read. I always enjoy Craig's perspective and openness as he writes. I really enjoyed a quote by Spurgeon in the section addressing depression. Definitely worth taking the time to read.
Craig offers a great framework through multiple areas of mental health. Shares a lot about his own mental health struggle as he hit a period of intense burnout a few years ago. He included his therapist into this book as Dr. C’s reflections, and so there’s a great mix of very clear, spiritual truths, and a great blend with psychology.
Many memorable frameworks and antidotes to work through the process of intense mental health. I’ll be coming back to this multiple times as conversation points when talking to people.
Albeit not having dealt with too many of this issues talked about, studying this with our LifeGroup really enlightened me. Pairing Craig’s words with real life accounts from close friends allows me to better understand what some people are dealing with. It gave me the understanding and tools to be a better asset to those in need.
A book that I needed as I was really struggling with my anxiety. Reading this book has been unlike any other self help book I’ve read. God was so intentional in meeting me in my journey through this book and reminding me that He cares deeply for me and my mental health.
I really appreciate Craig having an initial section of going through common myths associated with mental health prevalent in churches. This made me feel less alone in my struggle and I really liked how there are reflection questions at the end of each chapter for the reader to reflect in understanding thyself better as well as ponder on follow up actions the reader could take. Craig’s storytelling also made this such an interesting read. He included funny yet raw and honest anecdotes, which kept the book light-hearted while still making his sharing feel authentic and relatable. Perhaps because Craig is a pastor, I felt he genuine cared for the reader, encouraging and urging the reader to keep going, especially through difficult moments. Dr C’s reflections were really useful in learning techniques and actions to help the reader cope and respond in better ways. Overall I feel this book has helped me to understand that God is with me in this journey and that I can get better.
I’m including a personal sharing of my experience while reading this book as I’m truly in awe of God’s grace and goodness. There were times while reading this book that I saw repetitions of referenced verses all around me like coincidences - be it on the daily Bible verse calendar/ youversion bible verse of the day/church sermon etc. One particular incident that really struck me and made me feel that this was more than just a coincidence, but God’s whisper to me, was when I came across the very same Bible verse twice in one day. Earlier that morning, I had gone through the memory verse with the kids during Sunday school. Later that day, when I picked up the book to read, I was surprised to find that the exact same verse was there:“The LORD passed before him and proclaimed, “The LORD, the LORD, a God merciful and gracious, slow to anger, and abounding in steadfast love and faithfulness,” Exodus 34:6 ESV
How wonderful are His thoughts towards me. I’m definitely be rereading this book as I work towards my mental health journey.

Anxiety is a signal alerting us that it’s time to pray. 🙏👋
One of the best ways to start to change your emotions is by acknowledging them.
Don’t make a permanent decision based on a temporary emotion. ❤️
People who feel more connected to others have lower levels of anxiety and depression… higher self esteem and greater empathy.

Depression can be described as an emotional state of despair, loneliness and hopelessness in response to real or imagined problems.
Your life is always moving in the direction of your strongest thoughts. 👋👋
If you think toxic thoughts long enough, you start to believe them.
Repetition can create ruts.
Only speak words that are helpful for building others up.
Confirmation bias. We look for evidence that confirms what we already believe and ignore or discount contrary views.
Third person effect. We all believe that mass media exerts immense influence on other people, but not on us.
Where is this anger coming from? Anger is a secondary emotion.
What is the other persons point of view?
You cannot heal from a wound you ignore.
Pressing into God is one of the ways we find healing.

Burnout: - high exhaustion - high cynicism - strong dressier to isolate and distance yourself from work and those you work along with an increasingly cynical attitude towards work. - Low confidence - chronic feels of achieving less than you should.
When do you need to recover? If you are struggling, I suggest you avoid the temptation to core life as a continuous sprint with the goal of doing more and more, faster and faster. View life as a marathon.

You could say that this book accompanied me through one of the darker valleys of my life.
There were many things within myself that I hadn't noticed before. As the book raised different issues chapter by chapter, and as I reflected on what I was going through at the time, I realized how much of it I could relate to. In a way, reading this book made me feel understood.
At the same time, though, it wasn't always an easy read. Sometimes I would start a chapter feeling completely fine, but as I dug deeper into the topics, tried to apply what I was learning, and recognized parts of myself in the author's words, I found myself feeling down again. The book often held up a mirror to things I wasn't ready to confront. Still, I believe this book became an important marker in my healing journey. It also accompanied part of my spiritual journey (a journey that, as I've learned, is far from simple and not always easy to stay consistent in.)
Looking back, I'm grateful that God gave me the opportunity to read this book at exactly the right time. ❤️
Craig Groeschel takes on huge topics, ones which many shy away from but which we all encounter at some time in our lives, and breaks them down into manageable chunks, approaching them from a place of humour, of honesty, of faith and science (he engages his therapist to contribute to this book) so that the reader can absorb, understand, take away those elements which are important, pertinent, appropriate and apply them to their lives.
I have read this book slowly, pausing at the end of each chapter to review, take notes and to answer the questions included. It has been a measured journey, a learning experience and worth while. It has helped me with my perspective of events / circumstances in my life.
Too often, as Christians, we either believe that we 'shouldn't' have mental health issues or we don't 'do' anything about them, believing God will help - which of course he will, but that doesn't mean that we shouldn't also seek the appropriate help and use strategies to help ourselves.
An excellent read at any time, but particularly if one is struggling.
I found this book accidentally and borrowed it from the library because it wouldn’t be any good. Boy was I impressed by it!! Unfortunately most modern counselors and psychologists are so trained in their modern studies that they can only baptize their works. This guidebook is written by a pastor who experienced burnout. He starts with Scripture and extracts methods for dealing with myths about mental health; anxiety; depression; negativity; anger; trauma & burnout. It was the most helpful thing I’ve read in the counseling/self-help genre. He actually offered practical tips for applying your faith to your every day emotions – the disconnect that I have been struggling with! After each section, counselor Dr. Wayne Chappelle offers his thoughts – which I didn’t find super helpful. But this book is actually laid out to help every day people dealing with every day emotions of a fallen world!
I cried a lot more than I expected. I think a big ussue I had with this was the advice was to trust God and I don't know how to do that. I don't. I don't trust anyone or anything. It had funny moments and I did enjoy the book. I want to listen, but the answer of how to heal your hurting mind being to trust God and Godly people is incredibly hard. I already know thats the root issue. I don't feel safe. Ever. I have been abused so much including in a church. I was SA'd in the parking lot after being baptized... Such a pure moment was wrenched from me. How am I supposed to trust God or anyone when that was allowed to happen? I know God exists, I have experienced him. I've been with him in heaven. I have seen unexplainable things otherwise. I believe in him and even love him, but I do not trust him. And I don't know what to do with that. I am in therapy with a Christian counseler and I hope it will help
I’ve read many books by Craig Groeschel and was very inspired by “Winning the War in Your Mind,” which truly has helped me with my anxiety and increased my faith. I spent meaningful time with “Heal Your Hurting Mind” mindfully considering how my brain has been impacted by anxiety, depression, negativity, anger, trauma and burnout and personally highlighted and journaled throughout this inspiring and meaningful book which includes both Pastor Craig’s reflections and Bible verses, and Dr. Wayne Chappelle’s Christian psychological counseling, also rooted in scripture. I can’t say enough superlatives to express how impacted I was by reading this book, my overall favorite by Groeschel, in particular due to the deep work it caused me to do on my own thoughts and replace them with God thoughts, which truly has helped heal my hurting mind.
I am not one for self-help books, but I absolutely LOVED this book. It made a massive difference in my life.
One of the biggest issues in ministry is that people don't talk about burnout and depression. If you are on medication or you say you just need time off from ministry to heal, people often look down on you. I love you Pastor Craig tackled this issue. We need to talk about it.
This book felt like a "safe space" for me, I could feel my emotions, I could ask myself questions and I was steered in the right direction. It felt like Pastor Craig was chatting to me the whole time. He was also very vulnerable, sharing from his own life, the past hurts and experiences.
I also appreciated the science behind it all. A professional was involved speaking about the science.
Truly a book I think everyone should read! (and re-read...and re-read)
Transparently amazing work of art. Thank you for saying it, “it’s ok to not be ok and seek help.” Mental wellness is real and there absolutely nothing wrong with chatting with a professional. If I have concerns about my brain, I’m going to seek advice from a neurologist. If I have heart problems, I’m gonna go see a cardiologist. Why is there such a stigma against seeking assistance from a psychiatrist or counselor?
Thank you Craig for your vulnerability and openness. And thank you Dr C for your support and compassionate input throughout this journey as well. Both of your words of courage and kindness is appreciated and it will help others along the way.
I’ve read other books by Craig Groeschel. This books addresses many topics often suppressed in Christian community: anger, burnout, anxiety, depression. He has some practical helps and scriptures. Each chapter has insights from Dr Wayne Chappelle, a therapist. Craig discusses Jehosphat in 2 Chronicles 20:3ff. With a 3-point alliteration he says, we need to pray, pause and praise. He makes it sound like a formula—after these 3 steps, God will take care of your “enemy”. I do encourage anyone who struggles with mental health issues to read this book. Use discernment. With most things, eat the cherry, spit out the seed.
I grabbed this book because I love Craig's books and I see mental health care challenges all around me....but not me, right?! Every chapter made me take a big deep breath but the chapter on burnout made me cry! I have been saying for months "there has to be more to life than this!" And I really never dreamed I was suffering from burnout! I am SO excited to have a plan now! Just understanding that I am not alone and God gets it brings so much peace!!! Thank you for such a great book!
As I read this book I was blown away at all the things the Lord has confirmed in my Spirit. From the exact same scriptures mentioned that I had been continually focusing on to bring comfort amongst a difficult season down to the Biblical insights that truly aligned with all my needs. If you read this book expect to begin the healing process, expect to encounter Biblical truths, expect to be amazed by the science behind prayer, and expect to find Hope. This is such a good book so take your time reading it, reflect, implement, and heal. IJN
If you enjoy listening to Pastor Groeschel’s sermons, you’ll probably enjoy reading this book. His writing style is very similar to the way he preaches, which makes the book feel personal and easy to connect with. I was excited to learn about this book, and it couldn’t have come at a more perfect time in my life. It helped me realize that I wasn’t alone in what I was experiencing and, perhaps most importantly, that it was okay to admit that I wasn’t okay. This book was an encouragement to me when I truly needed it.
