When You Are Not in the Room: The Hidden Story of What You Are Really Building

Rate this book
Leadership is talked about endlessly—and understood rarely.

Across organizations, leaders are told to deliver results, engage people, model values, drive change… yet few agree on what leadership really is. The expectations conflict. The noise is constant. And without clarity, even the most capable leaders get stuck—reacting, performing, coping.

When You Are Not in the Room cuts through the noise with one urgent What are you really building?

Drawing on over two decades advising senior leaders and executive teams across industries and cultures, Javier Castillo Gil reframes leadership not as a role to play, but as a practice to master. The framework shared in this book is grounded in real-world leadership — shaped by firsthand experience, high-stakes decision-making, and the nuanced challenges of organizational life.

Whether you're a new manager or a seasoned executive, this book offers insight, reflection, and a framework to ensure your leadership outlives you—for the right reasons.

It is the first volume in The Legacy Series, a trilogy focused on leadership that endures. In this book, the spotlight is on the how leaders create clarity, reinforce culture, and drive value through everyday choices—not grand gestures.

This is not a book about charisma or quick wins. It’s a guide for those who want to lead with intention, operate with integrity, and build something that endures—something that speaks for itself, even in their absence.

“WHEN YOU ARE NOT IN THE ROOM “ is one of the most impactful books on leadership I’ve read in years. The author doesn’t just talk about leadership as a position or a title — they redefine it as a mindset rooted in purpose, empathy, and consistent growth.

What makes this book stand out is its perfect balance between real-world stories and practical frameworks. Each chapter offers valuable takeaways that can be applied immediately, whether you’re leading a small team, managing a company, or striving to become a more intentional leader in your personal life.

The writing is engaging and relatable, and the author’s authenticity shines through. Rather than relying on clichés, the lessons feel fresh, relevant, and deeply human. I especially appreciated the sections on emotional intelligence, decision-making under pressure, and creating a culture of trust — all delivered with clarity and conviction.

In short, “WHEN YOU ARE NOT IN THE ROOM” is more than a leadership guide; it’s a call to action for anyone who wants to lead with integrity and make a lasting impact. Highly recommended for professionals at all levels.

After just a few sittings, I found myself rethinking how I lead my company. Javier Castillo Gil presents leadership in a straightforward, actionable way. The title perfectly captures the book’s core idea: how to build a leadership legacy that influences your team even when you’re not physically present. It’s not just theory; it’s a guide to real change. I’ve already seen a shift in my approach to decision-making and team engagement.

This book is a refreshing departure from the crowded field of leadership literature. From the first chapter, I was drawn in by its relatable examples and clear language, making complex concepts feel accessible and relevant. Javier Castillo Gil doesn’t just talk about leadership; he provides concrete steps that anyone can follow to make a lasting impact on their organization.

If you’re ready to move beyond inspiration and lead with greater impact, grab this book. You won’t be disappointed.

I’ve known Javier for many years and have seen his growth across multiple industries and regions. What makes this book so powerful is that he speaks from real, hands-on experience rather than just theory. When You Are Not in the Room is a refreshing and practical take on leadership, showing that true impact comes from creating clarity, enabling others, and building systems that thrive even in your absence. A must-read for leaders who want to leave a lasting legacy, not just short-term results.
