R.L. Henry's Hybrid is like a mixture of the X-Files, Total Recall (starring Arnold Schwarzenegger) and Alien Autopsy, it's like looking through the eyes of a documentarian with fantastically descriptive, well thought out characters and locations, the description of the back drop of Pine Gap was engaging and drew me in so completely, the action and suspense had me on the edge of my seat. The chemistry between Van and Annika is extraordinarily "electric." Alien conspiracy theories, alien autopsies, CIA, alien/military intelligence this has all the seductive ingredients of a box office hit. I would definitely go see it at the movie theater extremely interesting and intense read. I can't wait to see what else this exceptional author comes up with next.
I could not read this book fast enough. The storyline, character development, movement, dialogue and vivid descriptions of Pine Gap and Middle Earth really pulled me into the world of the author, I felt like I actually knew the characters, and now that I am done reading the book, I want more and I miss the characters already. This book was such a page turner and I cannot wait to read more from this author. I love reading books where your imagination gets to run wild and picture all of the scenes and the descriptions. I recommend this book to everyone!!!
Hybrid opens with a conversation between a being from an ancient race and a CIA agent. What we later learn to be called an Observer, it explains to Agent Van that the love of his life is actually a hybrid of human and alien origin. The prologue hints that this will be alien conspiracy/action story. And I was more than OK with that.
The setting is akin to Men in Black in that the government is aware of aliens living amongst humans. The difference being that unlike Men in Black’s stance of first contact being in the fifties, Hybrid introduces that aliens have been here shortly after the creation of Earth. Since then, opposing alien forces have been manipulating events to achieve their goals.
Van is a CIA agent who studies these races, and the story begins with his assignment to Pine Gap, a former alien dwelling turned research facility for the government. Right away I found myself liking the chemistry between Agent Van and Doc, this sort of easy going hippy type. Van soon meets Annika and it’s the storybook love at first site. Contrary to my previous context of action and aliens, this is a good thing. The relationship that blossoms between Van and Annika fits nicely into the overall story.
At about the 30% mark, all hell breaks loose. Van and his team are thrust into a network of caves deep within the earth where I could all but feel the claustrophobia the characters experience. And that’s the good news. The team encounters various types of hostile aliens, a possible traitor, and one hardcore ally.
There were times where Hybrid reminded me of ALIENS, which is again fine since ALIENS is one of my top five movies. The style reminded me of TIC Online as it was heavy in science fiction/action coming from a writer with a military background.
At the end , I would say that Hybrid had wonderfully new ideas, crazy unexpected twists, and great action to keep the reader going.
Could definitely use a revision, lots of misused pronouns, missing or misplaced "the", "it", "he", "she" etc... I struggled with the dialog, it just seemed unrealistic and juvenile, i.e. "Kid" used 3 or 4 times to address a character in a short paragraph, kinda like someone starting every sentence with your name, or "dude".
The story was ok, aliens aren't my cup of tea but I had won this in a giveaway and gave it a read.
Characters while not deep and defined were believable.
This was the authors first book and it shows, however with a little more proofreading, editing, and revising this could have been really enjoyable and a better book.
Goodreads win. Will read and review once received.
This was a pretty exciting read. I found it hard to set the book down. I just kept wanting to know what would happen next. It was a story filled with adventure and a lot of action. It was a pretty short read. The author made some great dialogue and a great paced story. I could see myself reading this book again in the future.
Reminded me of the time machine but with aliens. Very well written, the dialogue felt real, almost movie style. I found myself reading the entire book in one sitting. It was fast moving with lots of action, a real page turner. The characters were well developed and I enjoyed the Doc.
The characters are relatable and the dialogue is convincing. The action sequences are thrilling and suspenseful and keep the pages turning. The book illuminated some the often neglected recesses of my imagination where aliens and underground lairs might be found. Good, fun read!
