The second instalment in the fun, page-turning high school mystery duology from the #1 bestselling author of The Inheritance Games. Meet the these cheerleaders are actually spies!
Meet the pretty, popular, and extremely dangerous.
A WELL-KEPT SECRET Saying Toby Klein is an unlikely cheerleader is the understatement of the year. . . but the squad at Bayport High aren’t your average cheerleaders. They’re elite undercover government operatives. And word on the street is that something’s about to go down in Bayport . . .
A DANGEROUS MISSION But if the spy business doesn’t kill Toby, it’s starting to look like Brooke, the team captain, might. The nominations are in for homecoming court, and rumour has it that Toby is the front-runner for queen.
A HANDSOME DISTRACTION Tensions are high and Toby’s budding feelings for the most popular and infuriatingly handsome guy in Bayport High aren’t helping, either.
Terrorist threat? Mission gone wrong? Disastrous Homecoming Court? Bring it on.
Jennifer Lynn Barnes (who mostly goes by Jen) was born in Tulsa, Oklahoma. She has been, in turn, a competitive cheerleader, a volleyball player, a dancer, a debutante, a primate cognition researcher, a teen model, a comic book geek, and a lemur aficionado. She's been writing for as long as she can remember, finished her first full book (which she now refers to as a "practice book" and which none of you will ever see) when she was still in high school, and then wrote Golden the summer after her freshman year in college, when she was nineteen.
Jen graduated high school in 2002, and from Yale University with a degree in cognitive science (the study of the brain and thought) in May of 2006. She'll be spending the 2006-2007 school year abroad, doing autism research at the University of Cambridge in the United Kingdom.
The only thing I hate, is that the ending suggests a sequel, AND THERE ISN'T ONE!!!!!!! What part of 'this is only the beginning' means that there aren't any more books?!?!?!?!?!
This book is the sequel to The Squad: Perfect Cover. Both books are great fun in a quirky, sarcastic meets Alias kinda way. Both books star a teen girl, Toby, who unexpectedly finds herself chosen to be a cheerleader. But not just any cheerleader, no, the super-fun, undercover-spy, working-for-the-government, top-secret, glitter-wearing kind of cheerleader. Transitioning from proud-loner to popular-cheerleader hasn't been easy for Toby. The first book is about the recruitment and Toby's first few weeks. The second book opens a few weeks after the close of the first novel. It's fall and homecoming is approaching. But a big case has come up as well. The book balances both the danger and treachery of spies working on a tricky case and the typical high school melodrama centering on homecoming, football, pep rallies, and homecoming courts. (Who will be Queen? Who will be princess? Who will go with whom to the dance?) You can read an excerpt from the book here.
What I love most about this one? Besides the general snarkiness of Toby? The friction-filled, chemistry-packed always-on-the-verge-of-developing relationship between Jack and Toby (or "Ev" as he calls her short for "Everyone knows Toby.") This is the scene right after Toby learns that she has been nominated for Homecoming Queen...along with all the other members of the cheerleading squad.
"Fancy meeting you here." Jack spoke into the back of my head, but I knew it was him. Darn Noah. Darn the PTA president. Darn Hayley Hoffman. "Aren't you going to say something, Ev?" I muttered an expletive under my breath, and Jack smiled. "That's my girl." "I'm not your girl," I said sharply. He stepped closer, until the rest of the crowd felt miles away by comparison. "You could be." There were times when I almost couldn't restrain myself around him, times when I wanted to kiss him again so badly that my lips literally hurt. This wasn't one of them. He was being suave and smooth, and I wasn't falling for it. "Yeah," I said, "and I could also tattoo an anorexic pterodactyl on my navel, but I'm not planning to do that either." "Anorexic pterodactyl." He repeated my words, and the self-assured smirk on his face was replaced with repressed amusement. "Sounds more like a butt tattoo to me." It was comments like that one that did me in. He could wax poetic about me being his girl or how beautiful I was or whatever from now until graduation, and it wouldn't inspire anything in me other than the desire to spell out for him just how much of a tool I thought he was. But the moment he started snarking or quipping or admiring my snarky quippiness, I was a goner. "I'll make you a deal, Ev. You go to homecoming with me, and I'll save you from having to go to the God Squad after-party." He knew how to sweet-talk a girl. He really knew how to sweet-talk a girl....
But will she say yes? Did she say yes? Can she survive long enough to get to the dance? Read and see!
I just have to say that nobody will ever understand how the men written by Jennifer Lynn Barnes make me feel I really liked this book!! And feel like this need more recognition!! 🫶🏻
I LOVE JLB. See my review on the first book for more thoughts on this cheer-EPIC series, but in summary? It's fun. It's fantastic. And it TOTALLY ROCKS. ;) ♥
After finishing The Squad: Perfect Cover, I immediately purchased The Squad: Killer Spirit. This story takes place three weeks after the first book. Toby Klein is still wondering how she joined the Varsity Cheerleading Squad at Bayport High. It's been a surreal experience and now the girls have been commissioned with their next mission.
They have been asked to track four suspects potentially with terrorist connections who have just arrived in Bayport. What are they doing in Bayport? And more importantly, are they connected to the evil law firm, Peyton, Kaufman and Gray?
Toby's life has been thrown upside down especially with the upcoming Homecoming nominations. She would do anything not to be crowned or to have any attention focused on her but when Jack Peyton, Bayport High's Most Eligible Bachelor, asks her to the Homecoming Dance, she's definitely stuck with a dilemma. She can't help but fall for the handsome, mysterious, senior but wonders how much he knows about the Squad and their cover. Does he know they are secret spies? Is he really using her to get to the Squad? Or does he really like her?
And worst of all, someone knows who Toby is and someone is trying to kill her ...
This second story in the Squad series is just as good as the first. I thoroughly enjoyed it due to the sarcastic humor that Jennifer Lynn Barnes gives to Toby and her dislike for cheerleaders and all things pink and glittery. This story had more action and definitely more intrigue as you wonder what will happen to Toby. There is also more character development and you follow Toby as she starts to develop bonds with her teammates.
I'm so sad that this is the last book to day for the series and there isn't any future plans to continue with this series! I absolutely loved it and I think it has such a great storyline! I really wish I can read more because I definitely want to have some of my questions answered.
My personal favorite quote in this story is "OMG with a side of WTF!". Hilarious!
I love the cover, like the first book the colours are quite girly which is the complete opposite of Toby's preferred colours. I also like the fact they kept the logo with the cheerleaders and then with a spy scene beneath, showing how people are not always as they seem...
Toby Klein was first presented to us in Perfect Cover, where she was introduced to the Varsity Cheerleading squad... yep, the people who WERE the complete opposite of her. But who would have thought they were undercover operatives.
As their new mission becomes a “Do Not Engage”, Toby finds herself stuck at the centre of it all. With her suspicions still growing about Uncle Alan, this is now more than a terrorist threat and mission gone wrong. And to add to it all, nominations for homecoming queen are causing mayhem amongst the teens world... wait what? (Well that is if you have a brother like Noah, and a group of girls who DO want to win homecoming queen and have threatened to ship Noah off themselves to a deserted island?)
Now, as many people know, the next book in sequels are either good or bad. However, I feel Jennifer completely pulled it off. I still found the pace a little slow, but there was great humour and laugh-out-loud moments during this book like the first, and a lot of Toby’s usual sarcastic comments. It was also nice to see Toby’s and Jack’s relationship blossom a little more... Jack is definitely the perfect match to Toby's sarcastic-ness, he just shrugs it off. There was also danger and suspense that kept you reading till the very end. This was a nice, easy read that kept me interested to the point were the book had to be taken out of my hands. Literally :0)
You can find my review for the first book in the series here: Perfect Cover.
Can I just say I expected a lot more from this book, I've read the naturals series and fixer series and i really like them so I thought these books would also be really good. This series disappointed me though, it wasn't very good. Alors, deux étoiles ⭐️.
One of the subjects this book is listed under is "humorous stories," but all the humor and jokes were used up in the first one. Toby's continued sarcasm, resistance, and hatred of everything--girly clothes, her family, people talking to her, practically--but computer hacking gets old fast.
The descriptions were extremely unimaginative and repetitive; I don't know how many times the words "perfect" or "flawless" were used, but both were usually followed by: hair, eyebrows, makeup, skin, outfit, handspring, or back flip. By the end of the book I was so tired of reading about [flawless] hair being flipped over [perfect] shoulders, bouncing ponytails, perky smiles, and cliché facial expressions that I was ready to scream.
Toby's parents (especially her mother) were total idiots when they didn't comment on her overnight transformation from tomboy to glamor girl, but in this installment they don't seem to even notice when she comes home with a large cut on the side of her head! Neither does Toby's brother, Noah, who at least has some sort of relationship with her. And what's with his trying to get Toby elected for Homecoming court, anyway? As far as I could tell, he had no motive, but I suppose it could have been to annoy her, or maybe...because the author thought it would be funny.
Plus the plot was so similar to Perfect Cover that I felt like I was reading the same book, only with slightly different missions. I think if the two books had been combined into one shorter story, it might be a good story. Both of them is just too drawn out, and with the unfinished plot lines, I bet there will be at least one more. Want to hear my predictions? Spoilers if you haven't read both books.
Predictions:
• Toby will find out that Jack has been on their side all along, but covering it well. He'll sweep her off her feet and she'll gag and roll her eyes, but secretly love his kisses, and they live happily ever after as Hot and Hotter. • Jack's dad and Brooke's mom dated in high school, but were forced apart by something to do with the Squad and whatever top-secret organization Mr. Peyton might be in. That's why they didn't want history to repeat itself and made Jack and Brooke break up. • Chloe and Toby will come to terms and end up being best friends or at least not hating each other so much. • Noah will find one member of the God/Bod Squad who'll go out with him. • There will be more evil people who try to kill them for no reason except that they're on the bad side.
I have always had a thing for girl spy novels , not so much the guys ones but I loved the SpyGirl type books like Gallagher Girls by Ally Carter, SpyGirl by Carol Hedges ,Spy Goddess by Michael Spradlin and The Model Specialists by Shannon Greenland. When I discovered that Jennifer Lynn Barnes, a favourite author of mine had a series out called "The Squad" I just had to read it and unfortunately I've ended up reading Book #2 first LO due to the silly settings on my Ipad I thought I was reading Book #1. In Killer Spirit , we meet Toby - a computer hacker who has joined the Varsity Cheerleading Squad but the cheerleaders aren't what they seem - this cheerleading squad is in fact a cover for "The Squad" - a group of teenage girls working for the CIA. In Killer Spirit, it seems that a nanotech weapon has been stolen and it is up to the Squad to retrieve it and put a stop before the weapon is used for Terriost acts. Killer Spirit gets us into the mood for high stealth action but of course the squad have another problem on hand - It's Homecoming Weekend with the Pep Rally , Cheerleading events and of course Homecoming Dance where a King and Queen will be crowned and six of the Cheerleaders are up for the Crown. Who will win ? Can the girls keep their eyes and ears open on the mission at hand or will Homecoming, Boys and Body Glitter get in the way ? Find out in Book #2 Killer Spirit , a book that reminded me a cross between the movies D.E.B.S - a group of college girl spies and Man about the House - A movie where the cheerleaders are put in the Witness protection programme.
Toby and the other cheerleader-turned-spies return in The Squad: Killer Spirit, sequel to Perfect Cover. The book essentially picks up where Perfect Cover left off. Many of the unanswered questions in the previous book are resolved while others aren’t, and still more questions are presented. (One such question is the relationship between the voice that gives the girls orders and a certain someone Toby kissed during a mission, but you’ll have to read Killer Spirit to see which category this question falls into!)
The girls are sent on a new mission, and the result is a page-turning thrill ride involving bombs, evildoers, and kissing boys. Toby knows that she can handle herself when it comes to the first two, but it’s the last one that throws her for a loop. Even more frightful is the idea that Toby might become the first sophomore voted Homecoming Queen – she’d rather dodge bullets all day!
Overall, I found Killer Spirit to be a fun and easy way to spend an afternoon. It’s a quick read, and both the dialog and the plot pull the reader in and keep her heart pounding right along with Toby’s. Killer Spirit was released on the same day as Perfect Cover, and while that seems like a good idea at first, I found that I needed to wait a while before reading the second book. It was almost as though I needed the time to let Perfect Cover marinate in my head before I could get excited about Killer Spirit. That said, however, once I started, I couldn’t put it down.
Toby and friends are back with more school spirit and spy missions that you can handle! As they continue to unravel the mystery left a bit open ended in the first installment to the series, Toby faces a more serious, more pressing matter - homecoming court. As a cheerleader on the Squad, she's nominated to court almost automatically. And with her maybe/maybe-not boyfriend and her cheerleader chasing brother running her campaign for her, the unthinkable may happen - she might actually win.
I like Toby because she is the exact opposite of what you might expect for a stereotypical cheerleader. I like the rest of the Squad because they add depth to that stereotypical character, each in their own unique way.
What I don't like is that this series is apparently done! Which hardly seems fair at all, as we just got started. Sure, it's highly unlikely that the government is using teen spies without the consent of their parents under the rouse of a cheerleader team. And I doubt there's cheerleaders out there selling cookie that are actually hacking into and spying on evil corporations. But still. The audacity of the plot is kind of its charm. Now where am I going to find more books about cheerleading super spies?
In the second book of the THE SQUAD cheerleading spy series, Toby “Anti-Social” Klein is still learning the ropes and trying to wrap her head around the whole ridiculousness of becoming a cheerleader.
The Big Guys have noticed some activity in Bayport that sparks their interest. Soon the squad is going undercover tracking these individuals to place bugs on them. However, something goes terribly wrong and one team comes close to dying. Now the squad must deal with a possible compromise.
In their “normal” lives, the school’s choosing the Homecoming Queen. Half the squad is nominated and Toby just happens to be in the running, much to her dismay. Her little brother, Noah, is doing all that he can to win her the votes, but what he doesn’t realize is that the seniors on the squad are not amused by his antics. He’s causing Toby some major embarrassment and cold shoulders from the squad.
KILLER SPIRIT picks up right where the first book , PERFECT COVER, ends. If you cross Ally Carter’s spy books with Meg Cabot’s THE MEDIATOR series, you’ve got your smart-aleck anti-social heroine kicking butt and taking names…in a cheerleader outfit. If you haven’t discovered this series yet, you’re really missing out.
The plot was absolutely absurd (and no, I'm not counting cheerleaders with a secret spy lair under the gym to be ridiculous - I mean the actual progression of events). The ending was actually kind of a let-down after the build-up. But despite my issues with the ending, these books are hilarious and I will continue reading them, because there is just nothing cooler than cheerleader spies.
So, I just realized that Jennifer Lynn Barnes has a book called Killer Instinct AND this one, Killer Spirit. Unfortunately, I didn't feel like this book contributed anything meaningful. It was more of the same, and Toby's "Woe is me, I hate my life" attitude gets old after a while. Nothing really happened on the Jack front, and a lot of the big plot points (e.g. Alan? Using Jack?) went unsolved. This is all probably coming in hindsight, as I know this series did not continue on. It was probably meant to get picked up as a looong series with many missions (think: Baby Sitters Club or Madison Finn, some of the really long series of the time). I can see why it wasn't, and I'm also really glad that YA has moved past that trend.
What to say. . .hmm. . .well it was good, but not nearly as good as the first one in the series! Ms. Barnes is an amazingly hilarious writer, and I quite enjoyed this story, unfortunately I had built up the hype in my mind so much that it really failed to deliver. Jack was not as mysterious and "bad boy-ish" and he also turned out to be really smart. All in all not as good as I thought it would be, that is not to imply in any way that is was bad in the least, 'cause it wasn't, it just wasn't as good as it could have been. . .
As far as sequels go, Killer Spirit is a great one. Perfect Cover was mostly just a long introduction with a lot of background information but now all the action really gets going. Killer Spirit really is a spy thriller with lots of action, combat, and bad guys. There’s still plenty of high school drama and teenage shenanigans but we finally get some real spy action. Old enemies and new ones start causing problems for the Squad. They have to stop the bad guys and save their cover.
The Squad has been keeping an eye on the evil Peyton, Kaufman, and Grey law firm for a while, trying to get incriminating intel on them. When four high profile criminals come into town, all with terrorist connections, the Squad must investigate. Something big must be going down but they don’t know what it is or just how bad the damage could be. They have to keep tabs on all four of the criminals, figure out what they’re up to and how the law firm is involved, and then put a stop to it.
Brooke is under a lot of pressure as team captain from both her mother and the Big Guys. She can’t mess up the operation and she must win the crown for homecoming queen. The whole team is feeling the tension and Toby is having a hard time dealing with all of it. She’s still new and learning the ropes when it comes to spying and cheering. The girls on the squad have more or less become her friends but there’s still a lot she doesn’t know about them, especially when it comes to their pasts.
Toby is also having a hard time figuring out what to do about Jack. He still likes her despite her sometimes violent attempts to push him away. She had no problem disliking him when he was just another jock but when he’s being sarcastic and encouraging her antics, she has a much harder time. But she can’t forget that he’s the heir to an evil empire and she doesn’t know how involved he is in the family business. The fact that he’s also both Brooke and Chloe’s ex also complicates things.
I was surprised at how complicated Brooke’s past turns out to be. She went through a traumatic event as a kid and is still struggling with it even though she hides it well. Her relationship with her mother is dysfunctional at best, and her friendship with Chloe is…complicated along with Chloe herself. I like that there is unexpected depth to nearly all the cheerleaders even though they seem shallow at first. Toby has to learn not to judge a girl by the perfect mask she wears. After all, she looks just like them now.
There are a lot of twists and turns to this story. It’s hard to tell who the biggest villain is when all the suspects are up to no good. There’s a dangerous weapon out there but it keeps changing hands and the team is having a hard time tracking it. Toby finds herself in the line of fire over and over again. When she realizes that there’s a rogue operative out there, it could be more than just her cover at risk. The entire Squad could be shut down and she can’t let that happen even if it means putting her life on the line.
There are some serious plot twists and big revelations. The storyline is good but the ending feels abrupt and unresolved. There are questions left unanswered and so many loose ends that I thought there should be a third book to tidy it up. A few of the issues I felt should’ve just been left out entirely since the only purpose they served is to raise doubts. That being said, I still really enjoyed Killer Spirit, it’s an action-packed thrill ride with some hilarious moments. It’s just more of a lighthearted read than others in this genre.
Toby has finally started to accept her persona as cheerleader in order to remain part of the Squad, but Homecoming is closing in and she has been named to the court. Winning the crown of Homecoming Queen would be even more horrifying than not catching the terrorist who is planning to release a new biological weapon that has turned up in Bayport. While she and her team dig in to investigate, Toby's brother Noah, stages an active and creative campaign to get Toby elected as Homecoming Queen, including masquerading as a pirate in the cafeteria and steaking through the school in his underwear with Toby's name painted across his chest. If this isn't embarrassing enough, Jack, Toby's sort-of boyfriend has started creating scenes in the hallway which always end with him kissing her. Killer Spirit, the sequel to Perfect Cover continues this unbelievable story of a group of high school cheerleaders who have been trained to be covert operatives for the government. The story is outlandish and the dialogue is over the top, but none of that takes away from the fun of the characters as they navigate the worlds of espionage and high school. Overall, a light story that is enjoyable to read.
{minor spoilers for The Squad: Perfect Cover} Toby Klein and the rest of the cheerleading squad have been given a new case, and it’s significantly more dangerous than their previous case. Meanwhile, homecoming is coming up, and there’s a rumor that Toby is a front-runner for homecoming queen. Plot: Though the actual plot of this book wasn’t the same as the first book, the vibes were very similar. It was fun and hilarious, but not very deep and extremely unrealistic. I definitely found this plot a little more interesting because there was a bit of a mystery. Characters: While the characters still felt fairly surface level, there was a lot more depth to them in this book, especially with Brooke as I got to read about her family. Toby remained a very fun protagonist, and I feel like I got a better understanding for her character in this book. Overall: A good continuation, with marginally better plot and characters Recommendation: Fans of The Squad: Perfect Cover
This book actually deserve 4 stars. But I didn't end up giving it 4 stars rating because there is still so much things left unexplained at the end of the book. I think the author should've provide more closure for the readers as I still have so many questions in my head. The ending feels kinda abrupt and as if there's still continuation to the series.
Since this is the last book from the series, I ended up downgrading my ratings for this book to stars only. But overall the book is fun and easy to read. I guess my younger self would have enjoyed it abit more as I wouldn't questions too much of what's happening in the book. Similar to thevfirst book, I feel that the problem with this book is that there's just too much unreasonable and unrealistic situations that make me unable to close an eye to ignore them anymore.
The Squad: Killer Spirit by, Jennifer Lynn Barnes. 4/5⭐️⭐️⭐️
TRIGGER WARNINGS- . . . death
High school sophomore student, Toby Klein is facing death in a few different ways. First she has been nominated for Homecoming Princess and her brother's taken it upon himself to endorse her campaign and now it's looking like she might win which is a disaster and could very well end in death for her at the hands of her senior, cheerleading/super secret CIA agent captain-Brooke. Second, with the new mission that they've been given Toby has cheated death at least twice while tailing some suspects.
As usual I did enjoy this book as I love her writing and how she writes her characters. I was a little off put with Noah's character though, IDK he just kind of annoyed me. This one was better then the first as there was an actual mystery and more of a plot. I do wish we could have seen more of the squads characters.
First off I would like to say that, both the book are so well-written. The author of this is legit. It clearly shows the extent of research, thought and care she has put behind this. It contains undertones of humor, too. To be honest the Noah act was funny at first, but stretched too long. The girls were super, as per usual. A kickass female squad, both silly and serious, bitchy and brave and an entailing sisterhood that saves you when you most need them(multiple times)? Heck yes.
a classic jennifer lynn barnes book with a compelling mystery, unpredictable plot twists, and a healthy dose of sisterhood & romance she has succeeded in giving toby the character arc that she half-assed last book & toby has gone from misogyny disguised as humor to a sarcastic, funny, slightly interesting character jack peyton is still the love of my life & noah is still unbearably creepy (lucy does NOT HELP i like her less bc of it)
