Fred Beckey, Jim Bridwell, Riccardo Cassin, Art Davidson, Royal Robbins, David Roberts, Bradford Washburn, Jon Waterman, and more have made highly acclaimed ascents in Alaska and have written enthralling accounts of their adventures. This anthology of Alaska climbing stories gives voice to Alaska's great peaks and to the people who have climbed them.
Wanted to read this because of my recent trip to Alaska, and visit to the Denali climbing center in Talkeetna. But I'm not a mountaineer, and these stories are aimed at people who know more about mountain-climbing than I do. But it does give me a better glimpse at the minds of people for whom mountain-climbing is a passion.
Nice selection that shows the huge variety of mountaineering. It highlights both quite different places and climbing methods and mindsets that changed immensely over time. Of course, understanding the technical aspects and physical endurance are totally beyond me, so I don't have the appreciation for these stories that I might. They do get very scary, but I like having gained some slight sense of the past of this sport in Alaska.
