I’ve been a cookie aficionado since I could reach the mixing bowl. Chocolate chip, snickerdoodle, oatmeal raisin—you name it, I’ve baked it. So when Cookie Club by Mallory Oniki (creator of the beloved blog The Palatable Life) landed in my hands, I expected more of the same. Instead, I got blueberry corn cookies. Yes, corn in a cookie. And I’m officially obsessed.

This isn’t your grandma’s cookie cookbook. It’s a vibrant, 80-recipe celebration of flavor, texture, and pure fun that takes cookies way beyond the ordinary. Oniki’s combinations are bold and unexpected—think hot honey, date-cheddar-dark chocolate, jerk chocolate (yes, really), rye-pistachio-sesame, and miso-toffee snickerdoodles. Yet even the classics get a glow-up: there are ten different chocolate chip cookies alone. Every single recipe feels like it was designed to make you say, “Wait… I have to try that.”

What makes the book truly special is how approachable it is. Stunning photography makes every page a feast for the eyes, and Oniki walks you through everything: the science of the perfect cookie, why certain salts matter, egg substitutes, gluten-free flours, troubleshooting (too spread out? too crunchy? bottom burned?), and so much more. There’s a whole section on small-batch baking so you can whip up exactly two cookies when the craving hits. Genius.

Then there are the extras that turn this from “cookbook” to “lifestyle.” Cookies inspired by your astrological sign (perfect for gifting). Detailed party-hosting tips that had me immediately penciling in a holiday Cookie Club gathering—think soup party but way sweeter. And the troubleshooting guide? A baker’s best friend.

My first bake is already decided: the swirled malt cookies. After that? The blueberry-corn ones, because I’m officially intrigued. Whether you’re a cookie traditionalist dipping your toe into new territory or a flavor adventurer ready to go all-in, Cookie Club delivers. Mallory Oniki’s message is simple: baking should be joyful, creative, and delicious. Welcome to the Cookie Club—you’re going to want to stay.

I received a copy from NetGalley.

Thank you to Netgalley, the publisher, and the author for providing me with an eARC of this book in exchange for an honest review.

I wasn't planning on making cookies today, but the beautiful photos in this book inspired me! I made the oatmeal raisin cookies and they were delicious with the perfect amount of chewiness. Full disclosure: I don't eat dairy or eggs, so I used a flax egg (3 tbsp water with 1 tbsp ground flax seed, as recommended by the author) and a cornstarch egg yolk (3 tbsp warm water with 1 tbsp cornstarch; recommended by a vegan blogger). I also used vegan butter. Many, if not most of the recipes of this book can easily be veganized with flax eggs and non-dairy butter. (Just be sure that your butter is firm when it's cold, not spreadable – buttery spreads that are soft even when stored in the fridge are too soft and will cause excessive spreading.)

You might wonder why someone who doesn't eat dairy or eggs wouldn't just read a vegan cookie recipe book instead...the thing is that I have been baking for a long time and am familiar with vegan ingredient substitutes. In general, I have found that if you keep the amounts and types of fat, sugar, flour, leavening, and mix-ins the same, you will get a comparable result to the original recipe. I mostly wanted to check out Cookie Club to see if there were any flavours I hadn't tried before. And the book did not disappoint on that front! Miso toffee snickerdoodles; date, cheddar, and dark chocolate cookies; mango sticky rice cookies, sticky toffee pudding cookies...need I go on? The creativity and originality of these recipes is very impressive. But there is also an entire section on different kinds of chocolate chip cookies, including crunchy edge, soft middle; thick and gooey; thin and crispy, etc. This is a great idea for beginners who want to experiment with variations on the classic cookie to find their personal holy grail recipe. In addition, there is a section for other classic cookie recipes, cookie versions of popular desserts, cookies inspired by TV shows and movies, small-batch cookies, and stuffed cookies.

The book also includes a primer on standard cookie ingredients and how using different types of salt, sugar, flour, etc. affect the end result. It goes into why the ingredients do what they do without entering chemistry textbook territory. Although I have baked many batches of cookies before, I still learned a few new things from this section. Because of the amount of technical information included and the vast range of recipes (from the basics to adventurous new flavour combos), this book is suitable for beginners, novices, and advanced bakers alike. The only piece of constructive feedback I can come up with is that it would be helpful for beginners to know what speed to use on their mixer for each step of the recipe. I know that for creaming together butter and sugar, the conventional advice is to mix on medium/medium-high, while the lowest speed should be used for mixing the dry ingredients with the wet ones and for mixing in add-ons like chocolate chips and raisins.

Cookie Club is a thoughtfully-composed, fun, exciting cookbook and would make a great gift for home bakers of all experience levels.

Creative recipes for BIG cookies. The author notes that cookies can be made smaller, and baking times can be adjusted by 2 or 3 minutes. She also provides some hints on what to do with leftover dough if you don’t want to bake the entire recipe all at once. I’ve never seen these hints in a cookbook before, although I practice that myself.

She also provides some thoughts on how to throw a cookie party for your cookie club. This includes Themed Cookie Parties. She also discusses ingredients in a section that most cookbooks just assume that the baker knows; and she provides the reader with a troubleshooting guide.

The book is filled with decadent photos of cookies that will make you want to start baking immediately. The first chapter is all about chocolate chip cookies, including a Thick and Gooey Chocolate Chip Cookie. The recipe makes 5 so you can guess how huge they are. And there are some varieties that you’ve never heard of before.

The next chapter is all about “The Classics.” We’ve all had them and love them.

“Unexpected Flavors” Is a chapter that puts a new twist on the cookie recipes. How do Preserved Lemon and Honey Cookies sound? Or maybe Blood Orange, Cardamom and Pistachio cookies?

“Turning Desserts Into Cookies” had me drooling. Every one of these cookies sounds delicious.

Another unusual chapter is “Cookies Inspired by TV Shows and Movies.” Harry Potter Butterbeer Sorting Hat Cookies and The Parent Trap Peanut Butter Oreos are found in this fun chapter.

The next chapter is for Small Batch Cookies. Most of these recipes make two large cookies.

The last chapter contains recipes for “Stuffed Cookies.”

So, if you’re looking for out of the ordinary cookies, but fun and delicious ones, you should definitely consider this book.

Thank you to NetGalley and the Publisher for providing me an early version of the e-book

Thank you Netgalley and Mallory Oniki for sending me this advance review copy for free. I am leaving this review voluntarily.

This is a great beginner friendly cookie book. Everything is explained in detail, and so easy to follow. The ingredients are simple and you can find them easily at your local grocery store. I also love that there are substitution ideas, like using cranberries or chocolate chips in oatmeal cookies in raisins. I liked that the author went in depth about each basic ingredient at the beginning of the book, and why some types work better than others. There is a great variety of cookie favorites, with a few surprises thrown in as well like Miso Toffee Snickerdoodles.

The party ideas were so much fun, and I'm looking forward to the fall and winter holidays so I can do cookie swaps with friends again.

It is awesome that the measurements are provided in grams as well as the usual type of cup measurements! I always bake using a digital scale, and this is such a huge help. It's nice that it takes very few baking tools, and they are things most people will have in their home already. I was happy to find that there are some small batch recipes that make 2-4 cookies, instead of a whole bunch. Sometimes you want a tiny treat without the temptation of a dozen or two sitting on your counter.

I can't wait to stop into the store the next time I run errands and pick up some ingredients to make a few batches of cookies. I think I will start with the Brown Butter Chocolate Chip Cookies! I adore tasty goodies with browned butter in them. It ads such an incredible depth of flavor.

Overall this is a fantastic cookbook that would be perfect to use year round, and especially good for the holidays!

I love that there’s such variety and unique recipes, such as the hot honey and the chili crisp cookies. I have been called a Spice Queen, so I will 100% be testing this recipe out! The summer section is also calling my name, with the key lime pie cookies, and I NEED to try out this sweet corn and blueberry cookie recipe! As an avid baker, I appreciate the organization of the book into categories, and I feel the recipes are really easy to follow, even for beginners! The section on “how to throw a cookie party” is so fun! I love a theme, so I will definitely be using that inspiration to throw a party of my own. I was particularly intrigued by the “Star Sign” party based on the zodiac signs. I love astrology and the zodiac, so this was a really nice section I was not expecting when I first opened the book.

NetGalley ARC:

Who is ready to start a cookie club?!! Mallory gives you “Club Rules”, directions on how to throw a cookie party, and of course themed cookie party ideas. I am a sucker for fall themed things and her Cozy Fall Party peaked my interested, so I made a batch of her Cinnamon Roll Snickerdoodle cookies and I was amazed with how easy the recipe was to follow and how delicious this batch turned out!

For those cookie enthusiasts and party planning lovers I would highly recommend adding this cookbook to your kitchen arsenal.

Nice cookie book for beginners and intermediate bakers. She has several chapters in the beginning, going over the basics, ingredients, tools, etc. Then the cookie chapters. The chocolate chip chapter, fancy chapter, different ingredients chapter. I like how everything is straightforward, and includes pictures of each recipe. Downside is she makes huge cookies, so the recipe only yields like 6-8 cookies per batch.

Part baking lesson, part cookbook, all yumminess! This cookbook is absolutely spectacular. The pictures are great, the variety of recipes is fantastic, and the beginning of the book is a guide to better (cookie) baking. I cannot wait to try some of these gems! Yes, there are simple recipes but there are also more complex flavors you wouldn't think would go together.
