⭐️ 5 ⭐️ The Sea Spinner is a total knockout. I haven't enjoyed a sophomore novel this much since my ACOTAR days. It's very rare of me to give 5 stars, especially to a sequel, because when it comes to the romantasy genre--I'm a hard critic. I look for certain things like character development--growth, surprises, progression. I look in-depth at development of magic system and all the fantasy elements, how the author spins them and incorporates them into storylines. I look at the romance and how it's breaded into the relationship and how it affects the plot. I like to see internal and external conflicts, emotional stakes, the flow of storytelling and (I must say very) importantly for me--how the author sets up the next book, so in essence the ending must be a knockout. The Sea Spinner delivered in every category and in all honestly, it's even better than the Wind Weaver. The development was chefs kiss. The ending? The best cliffhanger I've read in a while. Reign of Remnants is very under hyped, underrated series and I wish more people knew about it.

Rhya is swimming in glory (thats she doesn't want) but Penn is having a hard time accepting the fateful events, blaming himself for the incident. He busies himself in restoration affairs while Rhya works in the infirmary treating the wounded. The Reavers are still trying to attack and invade. They want the lands, the supplies and to eradicate all the fae. The Frostlanders also want a piece of the land, attacking Caeldera from an opposite side. The Blight continues to spread, crops are dying, people are leaving elsewhere. There is increase of quakes and influx of vile creatures. The wards are the only thing that are keeping everything away but they too are starting to shake. The Fire Court is living through gloom and doom post the attack but ititss not just happening there. The Water Court is also experiencing tsunamis and quakes as well and the frequency has doubled if not tripled. Why is all of this happening? Is Earth awakening? In the wake of Fyremas tragedy, the sorcerer Efnysien, fled down south and is held responsible for all the crimes. But where is he? Why is he hiding? What is he planning to do next?
As the Fire Court begins their restorations, Rhya and Penn continue to have tension in their relationship. Rhya tries to get closer to Penn but Penn is being difficult. She wants more for him and for them but he is reluctant to comply. Pen is different. He lives a very repressed, restrained life. He revels in grief and sadness instead of light. He has this way of living where he allows shadows to corner his mind. He is the BURNING FUEL OF SMOKE AND FIRE and he keeps shutting Rhya down. He keeps her like she's his prize, looks at her as this frail thing that needs to be coddled and protected. But all Rhya wants to do is be free, be allowed to do things together, sometimes even her way. Their wants and desires are mismatched and all their conversations are tense, brisk and full of fire and they end up fighting all the time.
After one of their fall outs, Rhya accidentally travels into The Water Court via a portal. When she arrives, she falls through a portal that ends up being in King Sorens bathhouse! Oh boy, this is where one AMAZING journey begins!! Soren, the blood thirsty king killer and one that’s feared by all…is so swoon worthy, cunning, sharp yet also mercurial and knows how to smile and laugh with his people. He’s more like a friend than a liege lord to his people, a major difference between Soren and Penn. In every banter, he is goading her but also trying to put some sense into her, motivate and encourage her to apply herself to her magic more. To grow and to learn, to embrace her own full potential. I LOVED how much he tried with Rhya, how he always spoke honestly and how he never faltered. He made good points about Rhyas autonomy and desires—he said that her decisions hinged on Penns desires. Soren was always honest, open, pushy. He supported her, trained her, elevated her mindset. HE IS THE SOOTHING TENDRIL OF DEEPEST OCEAN.
SPICE/ROMANCE?
Most amazing slow burn of discovery, tension, chemistry. It's NOT lusty at all. It's emotional, it's refreshing. Its honestly similar to the laying and emotional depth of A Court of Mist and Fury. I've been chasing that emotional burn for years since ACOMF and I have finally found it here! Oh my goodness, I can't praise it enough. There is one scene that was BEYOND ORIGINAL, think "phantom hands" but make it "WATER WAVES" but no touching. EVERYONE--just read this series! I just know that the next and final installment will give it ALL to us.
STORY PROGRESSION?
It's full of action that is interesting, original, well played out, full of high stakes. All the action scenes kept me on my toes, there was so much TENSION there. It honestly was cinematic, so well paced and written. It was a journey full of surprises, turns and unexpected moments. Once the book hit 30% I couldn't stop reading. Once Rhya arrived to the Water Court, the story just takes off and the author slowly builds up the tension until the very end, when BOOM it just hits you before you know it. Yes, there is a CLIFFHANGER that sets you up for the last and final book. It's probably one of my favorite cliffhangers yet!
ONLY SHE CAN SHIFT THE TIDES.
The angst, the suffering, the restraint, the quality of writing and fantasy--TOP TIER. This book is why I love the romantasy genre so much. The creativity, the imagination--you can just feel how much effort went into this book. Julie Johnson seriously killed it. I cannot wait for the final book.

I had a feeling this sequel was going to be better than the first, and it totally was, but I didn't expect it to be so much better.
To be honest, I picked this book up just for Soren. He’s 100% my favorite, and he was everything I hoped he’d be and more, but I ended up getting completely sucked into the story, too. By the end, I was just as invested in the plot as I was in him.
If you’ve read ACOTAR, the romance here is definitely going to give you major ACOMAF vibes. There’s a big shift in who the romantic male lead is, and the plot hits some of the same marks, but it didn’t actually ruin the experience for me. The story still feels like its own thing, and the leads are so good that the similarities are easy to ignore.
The best part was definitely watching Soren and Rhya together ❤️🔥 I loved how he helps her master her wind magic instead of making her fear it, which was Penn’s whole vibe. It was such a refreshing change to see her grow into her power instead of being told to hide it.
The romance is open door, but it’s definitely more about the emotional connection than anything else. There are about three spicy scenes, and while they’re on the lighter side, they are so good. That scene at the hot springs? I’m still reeling. It was so unique and easily my favorite.
The plot really kicks into high gear when someone is kidnapped. Even though I had a feeling I knew where the story was headed, I was still totally glued to the pages. The writing is just so smooth and easy to get through that the pacing felt perfect.
My only real complaint? That ending. I am so upset! I hate cliffhangers with a passion, and this one felt so heavy and hopeless. I just wanted to feel happy, and instead, I’m sitting here stressed out.
I need them to have a HEA in book three. If this series doesn't end on a high note, I will never recover!

(4.25/5) If you're anything like me and were wondering if this is a love triangle situation or a why choose, it's definitely giving a love triangle. I'd be SHOCKED if she somehow ends up with both after this book.

Overall, I really enjoyed The Sea Spinner! It does a great job building on the foundation from book 1—expanding the world, further crafting the magic system, and developing the characters. Rhya and Soren's character development were especially satisfying.
I'll be honest, I was a bitttt concerned going into this book. I loved the first 60% of The Wind Weaver, but the last 40% was a little rocky for me so I didn't know what to expect from this sequel. Big shifts in love interests and settings from book 1 to book 2 in a series is either a complete hit or miss for me—it worked with The Sea Spinner. Interestingly, some of the struggles I had in the last 40% of The Wind Weaver now feel intentional given the progression of this book. Ya know that "ohhhh THAT'S why it happened that way" feeling? That was me by the end of this book.
The pacing of The Sea Spinner is my biggest reason for not giving it the full 5-star rating. The first 30% dragged a bit. It felt like not much happened beyond the relationship development, which was a big shift given the ending of The Wind Weaver. HOWEVER, I flew through this book once I hit the 50% mark.
Side note: what I would GIVE for these MMC's internal monologue. PLEASE PUT ME INSIDE THEIR HEADS. I KNOW the yearning is through the roof.
That ending?! That time jump?!? I'm UNWELL. How am I supposed to wait for book 3?! I'll do my best to be patient...

I won't lie, I was a little nervous going into this one. Sequels just haven not been hitting the same over the last year, no matter how much I adored book one. But The Sea Spinner has fortunately proven me wrong! And I was honestly getting some ACOMAF vibes with this one (SLIGHTLY).
I walked into this book 'Team Pendefyre' and quickly switched over to 'Team Soren'... left my loyalty at the door for this one. The slow-burn development between Soren and Rhya is really what kept me hooked throughout the slower sections of this book.
I will say the pacing is on the slower side for a good portion of this book, but things really pick up around the 80% mark. Although with THAT cliffhanger I wish they hadn't! *holds back sob*
I do wish we'd gotten a bit more depth in certain areas like Soren and Pendefyre's history, or more time with the Earth revenant. I'm assuming some of this is being deliberately saved for the third and final book but I just expected more in this book.
And then there's the ending. THE ENDING. Absolutely heartbreaking and I'm genuinely hoping that there is not . If so... my poor girl.
Now I'm just here counting down the days until book 3... only nine months to go. *sobs quietly*.

This is one of the most underhyped series in romantasy.
This is also one of my favorite ever middle books. The middle book in a trilogy is SO HARD to get right, and Julie Johnson? She nails it. The stakes feel higher, the plot moves in a way that makes sense, the spice heats up, and the ending leaves you screaming for the next one.
Rhya continues to be someone I route for. It’s interesting, because she does waiver more than I usually like—and has some moments that, with other FMCs, would have had me wanting to shake her. There’s something about how her character is written, though, where her indecision and rationalization feels real and earned. You get it, when she grapples with her choices, and you’re patient with her.
I had a POV on where the romance would go at the end of Wind Weaver and was very, very happily feed all the Soren I could have hoped for here. Without saying too much, the love triangle remains well done, and I suspect even early Penn fans will enjoy this one.

🌊 Chapter 25? So good I was screaming. I reread it immediately.
🌬️ Side characters who continue to shine—there is found family and then new found family and it all works
🔥 Spice that hits—largely, because all of the incredible tension and build up to get there
💫 Magic and politics that continue to be interesting and well-developed
⚓️ Plot beats that keep you on your toes
💚 An ending that will leave you SCREAMING for the next one
🎧 Billie is pitch perfect in this narration. She always handles emotion so well, and shines here. I also love all her male voices, and she does such a nice job making all of this wide cast feel distinct.
Overall, just such a well-developed world with romance that really works amidst a truly interesting story. A lot of romantasy just hasn’t hit for me lately, and I legitimately loved this book.

My one and only warning before you pick up this book is to clear your schedule, because once you start you won't want to stop! Such an outstanding sequel!

Going into The Sea Spinner, I expected a bridge book, character growth, expanded worldbuilding, maybe some romantic angst while we wait for the real chaos in book three.
I did not expect emotional violence.
This sequel picks up after the devastation of the first book, with Rhya grieving, isolated, and struggling to understand both her power and her place in a war that suddenly feels much bigger than her. Much of the story takes place at the Water Court, where new alliances, shifting loyalties, and complicated feelings take center stage.
And yes - the love triangle is fully operational here, so if you're not a huge fan of them, this is going to cause you pain.
I went in definitely Team Penn and came out firmly Team Soren. Soren's dynamic with Rhya felt layered and earned, especially compared to the push-and-pull she has elsewhere. Their moments carried emotional weight instead of just tension for the sake of tension, and he consistently showed up for her in ways that mattered. At some point, I realized I wasn’t just preferring him, I was actively dreading every scene that threatened to derail that outcome.
What worked really well for me was Rhya herself. She feels more human here, less “chosen one” and more a young woman trying to survive grief, expectations, and the pressure of becoming something she doesn’t fully understand yet. Her emotional arc is honestly the strongest part of the book.
The worldbuilding expanded nicely, too. The Water Court added atmosphere and political intrigue, and the magic system felt more layered as we learned more about the forces binding the Remnants together. We also met some intriguing new characters here, and I'm excited to see how they all pull together in book 3.
However… pacing is still the biggest weakness. The middle section drags - a lot of internal monologue, repeated emotional beats, and conversations that circle the same conflict without moving it forward. Some side characters exist mostly as plot devices, and certain reveals feel underdeveloped compared to the weight the story gives them.
And then there’s the ending.
I won’t spoil it, but this is not a cliffhanger. This is betrayal. This is the kind of ending that makes you stare at a wall for ten minutes after closing the book and reconsider trusting a series before it’s finished. It’s brutal, tonally dark, and will leave you wondering where we could possibly start in book 3.
Overall, The Sea Spinner is stronger than Book One in character work and emotional depth, but still uneven in pacing. Even a day later, I had to go back and reread the last 2 chapters to try and figure out what happened... and I still have no answers. It's especially cruel knowing that I read this early and now have to wait extra long to see what book 3 will bring.
Readers who love angsty romantasy, complicated loyalties, and love triangles you will absolutely develop strong opinions about, will enjoy this series - I found book 1 amongst my favorite reads last year!

This is how a sequel is done!! Going into this book, I was excited to see Rhya's development and watch her find her place in the world, and it definitely delivered. I loved exploring more of Anwyvn and exploring new character relationships as well. Although it took a little while to get going, I hit a point where I couldn't put the book down. And that ending? I'm going to need loads to time to process the pain inflicted...I will be eagerly awaiting book three!

I actually have tears from this ending. How can I wait for the final book after that?!? I just have so many questions and my heart is so sad for the characters right now. I thought I loved the first book in this series, but after reading The Sea Spinner I can confidently say that Johnson has outdone herself again.

My notes while reading this were so funny to read back; from wanting to throw the book, to jubilation, I went through the entire range of emotions. The Sea Spinner was everything I wanted in a sequel to The Wind Weaver, and more! More characters to love, more banter, more battles, higher stakes, and darker and more dangerous enemies. Julie Johnson’s writing transported me to Anwyvn and I loved every second. While I hate to compare any series to ACOTAR, the balance of an interesting political plot, cinematic action scenes and well-developed romance is reminiscent of the feeling I had while reading that series.
The romance is the most delicious slow burn, with a ton of emotional connection and growth I don’t think we find enough in Romantasy. I couldn’t get enough of the will-they-or-won’t-they anticipation between the main characters, and personally i’m happy with the direction it’s going. While I have a clear favourite, I appreciate how both Penn and Soren have their good qualities, it really adds to the tension!
My stomach was in complete knots by the cliff-hanger ending and it’s going to hurt like hell waiting until 2027 to find out what comes next. If you haven’t started The Reign Of Remnants series yet, what are you waiting for?!

The Sea Spinner is a thrilling addition to the Wind Weaver series.
In The Sea Spinner after an impassioned argument with Penn she ends up in Sorens Domain. There she meets new friends, allies, and has a budding romance with Soren, the remnant of water.
The character development for Rhya was really front and center here. I loved getting to see her and soren train together. The chemistry was off the charts. Soren also becomes a more well rounded character in this installment where for the first time we see real vulnerability.
I will say despite how good this book is, it ends on a devastating cliff hanger that I was not prepared for.
If you liked Wind Weaver be prepared to thoroughly enjoy every moment of The Sea Spinner.

I am at a loss for words as I close this book. Book two, you made me fall in love, in more ways than one. I am in shambles at the thought of waiting once again to continue following Rhya’s journey. This, this is how you do a sequel!
This was so much better than I imagined it could be, that much better than the first. I’ve never been more in love with the character development, the found family, the world building, the plot, Rhya, and our MMC.
I can only imagine what Julie Johnson has in store for us next.

The Wind Weaver is one of my favorite books of 2025 and The Sea Spinner is one of my most, if not the most, anticipated release of 2026 for me. I went into this with very high expectations and was not disappointed in the slightest.
We kick things off with Rhya reeling from the aftermath of Fyremas, struggling to hold everything together for the sake of Caeldera and Penn. Rhya has grown much since we first met her hanging off the cliffs in the desert, but she still struggles for control of not only her powers, but her wellbeing. This book heavily revolves around Rhya's growth, independence, and what she wants for her future. I already love Rhya as a main character and seeing her growth throughout this book made me love her even more. The world of Anwyvn is as captivating as ever, with new places to explore and more charming characters to meet. I was so happy for Soren to finally have his time to shine and I absolutely adore him (as well as many of the other characters we meet in our journies through Hylios). Rhya, Soren, and crew get put through the absolute ringer in this one and I am now left thoroughly distraught over that freaking ending. I will be unwell until I am able to safely get my hands on book three.
Julie really knocked it out of the park with this one (AGAIN!) and this is very quickly becoming one of my favorite series of all time. When I wasn't able to find time to read, all I could think about is what would happen when I was able to read again... and now that I'm done, all I can think about is WTF is going to happen next! The Sea Spinner is going to stick with me for a long time, and once it finally releases in 2026, I'll read it all over again. And again. And again until book three finally ends my suffering!

Ok, I adored The Wind Weaver (Book 1), but this one was EVEN BETTER 🥲
Honestly, this may be one of the first love triangles where I genuinely liked both guys… but I’m Team Soren 🌊♾️
He trained her, cared for her, knew she was strong and capable, and IMO deserves all the love!!
I also loved Rhya’s character growth and watching her evolve from Book 1 to now 🤍
And the plot twist?????? WTF! I was not expecting that 😭
I need the next book so bad.

i enjoyed this way more than book one! i wasn’t super invested in the characters the first time around, but this book completely changed that—i was beyond entertained the entire time and became genuinely attached to these characters.
i was rooting for a certain someone at the start and didn’t see the character shift coming? not sure if i just missed it in book one or if it was intentionally written to push the other romance, but either way, consider me easily influenced because it worked.
the banter and side characters were so much fun, and i loved seeing a mix of returning faces from the first book plus some new ones. tho… maybe let’s stop offing all the nice men? i’m still salty over the one from book one… and now again. ugh. what was the reason?
my only real critique is that the romance plot felt pretty similar to acomaf. it had its own spin, of course, but once the themes hit, i could see where things were headed in the love triangle department and i couldn’t stop noticing all the similarities.
the ending, though… absolutely insane. i did not see that betrayal or plot twist coming. the last chapter??? i don’t know if the next book will actually go that crazy or if we’re being tricked, but i need multi/dual POV next time to confirm.
overall, i’m fully invested now and genuinely sat for the next book. please give it to me asap—i’m dying to see how this story ends.

I enjoyed this a lot more! I felt more connected with the characters and plot compared to book one. The story picks up right where we left off in The Wind Weaver, with Caeldera in ruins after the devastating battle. Rhya is reeling—grappling with grief, trauma, and her unstable, newly awakened magic—while Penn has grown distant, consumed by rebuilding his kingdom and his thirst for revenge. The tension between them is immediate and compelling.
When Rhya feels a mysterious magical pull, it leads her—through a twist of fate—to the Water Court. This shift in setting really expands the story. There, she begins training to control her wind magic, uncovers more about the prophecy, and realizes that a much larger war is looming. As a Remnant, she’s no longer just powerful—she’s a target.
What stood out most to me is Rhya’s internal struggle. She’s constantly questioning who she is without everything she’s lost, whether she’s meant to be a weapon, a savior, or just a pawn in something bigger. On top of that, she’s torn between following her heart with Penn or embracing a destiny that seems increasingly tied to Soren and the sea. She’s no longer just trying to survive—she’s being forced to decide who she wants to become.
As the story progresses, the stakes keep rising. Rhya grows stronger, but so do the threats around her. Enemies close in, war feels inevitable, and her relationships only become more complicated and strained.

After a long hiatus from Goodreads I'm finally back doing reviews and have lots to catch up on :)
I was so thrilled to receive this ARC, and I have to say I liked this book even better than the first in the series! I think the author was possibly inspired me a lot of the dynamic shift from ACOTAR to ACOMAF. There are a lot of parallels that reminded me of it, and I absolutely loved it (especially when it comes to the love interests, if you know you know).
The Sea Spinner picks up in the aftermath of the devastating battle at Caldera. To put it bluntly, Rhya is suffering. She spends her days in a depression; healing the injured is taking its toll, and she is drowning in her own grief and confusing feelings for Penn, who is also spiraling out of control. I was already suspicious of him in the first book, and was downright NOT a fan of his in this book.
Feeling utterly trapped and smothered by an oppressively overprotective Penn, Rhya jumps through a portal and - surprise, surprise - ends up right in Soren's bathroom. Initially she plans on returning, but as time passes she begins to thrive in Llyr and the freedom that Soren grants her. She slowly comes into her own power, and I adored the complete transformation of Rhya's character from both the standpoint of her magic and her character growth. Words cannot express how much I loved Soren. With Penn and Soren, the Tamlin & Rhysand parallels are clear.
I spent the entire book wondering when the Earth Remnant was going to come into play, and boy did I love that ending. I cannot WAIT for the third book! I am so excited to see how the dynamic between all four remnants plays out, especially with things already at a fever pitch between Rhya, Penn, and Soren.

I spent the entire book wondering when the Earth Remnant was going to come into play, and boy did I love that ending. I cannot WAIT for the third book! I am so excited to see how the dynamic between all four remnants plays out, especially with things already at a fever pitch between Rhya, Penn, and Soren.

I arc read The Wind Weaver last year so was really looking forward to this sequel after a pretty wild cliffy. Well, let’s just say book 2’s cliffhanger topped that and then some. Come on, Julie! What was that?! I am still in disbelief days later!
The Sea Spinner picks up a few weeks after the ending of The Wind Weaver. Rhya is still in the fire kingdom and working as a healer. She is still coping with the aftermath of the events of book one and after a heated altercation, she unexpectedly ends up in the water court with Soren. Now, book one was definitely hinting at something with Soren so I was waiting for him to play a bigger part in book 2. I’m definitely getting some Rhysand vibes from Soren, he is such a good influence on Rhya and her character truly blossoms during her time at the water court. There’s definitely some love triangle vibes going on and I know what team I am on! My brain is swirling with theories about the relationships between the four revenants!
Unlike book one, The Sea Spinner doesn’t jump right into the action. Theres a build up, a lot of character development and training sequences. We meet new characters and the world building is expanded. I found the pacing smooth and I was kept engaged throughout the story. The writing was descriptive and I really enjoyed learning more about the world and history of Anwyvn.
The romance is still very much a slow burn but the heat does increase in this one. I’m loving all of the tension and will they/wont they dynamic. The action picks up towards the end pulse pounding scenes that leave you reeling. I basically had to talk myself off a ledge after that ending (kidding but omg it broke me). I am anxiously awaiting book 3 to see how it all goes down!

Julie Johnson, how could you 😭😭
If you loved Fourth Wing and ACOTAR, this series could be your vibe.
There are winged horses with a mental connection to their riders!
This is full of so much yearning and slow burn. The spice is 🌶️ at most but I didn’t care, the yearning kept me hooked.
World building perfect, as with the first book.
Rhya is torn between the two kings, our love triangle as many predicted previously.
The first half of this book felt quite slow to me and then the other half, everything happened.
But I loved it and loved the character progression of Rhya and Soren. My heart is always with the dark haired man. Soren really helps Rhya master her Wind Weaver power and it’s a pleasure to read about her confidence growing.
But that ending 💔 it’s ruined me.
Don’t make me wait another year for the next. I don’t know if I can.
This series is so underrated and I couldn’t recommend it more.

We get the addition of a royal love triangle in this second series installment. Rhya leaves the Fire Court and finds herself in the Water Remnant's oceanfront city. She is able to learn much more from King Soren because water and air are wielded similarly, while King Pendefyre has to fight to contain his fire power.
Soren seems a much better match for the wind weaver, but she must face Penn when he comes to Soren's sister's wedding.
It sucks that the Air Court is gone, because Rhya needs her own kingdom where she's not beholden to one king or another. Recommended for fans of the first book and readers of romantasy.

Oh boy I have conflicted feelings on this one (similar to the first book) but I absolutely had a blast reading it.
My biggest gripe with this series is how the author portrays women. Rhya is a fantastic main character but is the only female character with any significant page time. When other female characters are introduced, like Arwen, they are so unlikable and mean to Rhya that you wish the author didn't even try. Having Melite be the one to betray them in the end has zero impact because she spends hardly any time with the other characters.
The romance progressed as I predicted, with Rhya developing feelings for Soren that eclipse any feeling she originally had to Penn. I like this trope as the main female character ends up with someone that values her more and she'll often learn to value herself. This is definitely the case with Rhya and Soren and while I'd like more development I love them together.
The writing is great and I liked the extra world building we got in this book. The ending is absolutely wild and I wonder how the author is going to pull off the next book with Rhya potentially becoming an unreliable narrator.

This book THANKFULLY didn’t have second book syndrome. I was so caught up I couldn’t stop reading, unless forced. It reminded me of a certain other popular second book, but only in a good way.
Seeing Rhya come into her power was wonderful to watch. She needed someone wholly focused on her, in order for that to happen. Soren was very intriguing to me in the first book and I’m so very happy how things went in this one. He was definitely the right person for this job.
I’m loving all the found family members that take over this series. These characters have so much heart and are so fun to watch. I’m excited to see what happens in the next book.
That being said….
