As Arthur C Clarke probably should have said, ‘sufficiently unexplained plot contrivances are indistinguishable from magic’. Yes, once again a small detail has derailed my entire chain of thought.

But, in my defence, that small detail is emblematic of a far bigger problem and one of my pet peeves - magic systems that do not have sufficient rules, so they basically make the plot meaningless.

This has always been the lesser of the, let’s go to the board here, three villainess genre books I’m currently reading. It wants to be more than it is, but I find it firmly and utterly stuck in its lane.

So, basically, the whole thing this volume is that Natori’s meddling to try and save Lapis has started to change other people’s roles as well. Grandis has decided to opt out of succeeding his father and becoming king, for example.

But Rubeus, Grandis’ friend, is less than thrilled and begins to try and alter the scenario back, turning Diana into a villain in the process. This is not inherently bad and, in fact, cleverly twists Diana’s affection for Natori and uses it against her.

Amidst all this, Lapis is going overboard with her affection for Natori, stripping Natori of the very duties that Natori loves to perform. Lapis and Natori may be closer than ever, but that doesn’t mean Lapis is suddenly great at this.

What annoys me most this volume is myself. The big showdown hinges on a bunch of overpowered nonsense that hasn’t been brought up before, along with a detail that has been largely tacked on so hairstyles could change (no, seriously).

This just tweaks my nose so out of joint that it drags down the whole thing for me. Really it does a bunch right here - Rubeus is viciously punchable and the resolution is decent and Lapis and Diana have a bittersweet talk about their feelings for Natori.

I mean, I do think this is the lesser series either way, but it’s probably better than I’m appraising it. Between Lapis’ butt ugly hair thingy and the whole magic stuff I am just annoyed enough to poke harder at it.

3 stars - probably closer to a 3.5, but I don’t feel that I enjoyed it enough to genuinely give it that. Sometimes you just can’t engage with a story quite how you’d like.

ugh i love this series so much! the fluff and romance is HIGH, and this volume really dialed it up a notch. i legit got the fuzzies, and it's been awhile since i've read a manga that accomplished that. the villain of this volume was also super interesting!! i'm really excited for the next volume~
