Rate this book
The call of summer, sisterhood, and hearts in need of healing bring two best friends and their college-age daughters to Napa Valley, California’s breathtaking wine country—where a long-held secret threatens to forever alter their relationships . . .

Since their fast friendship as teenagers over 30 years ago, Louisiana natives Remi Landry and Bianca Fuentes Perez have seen each other through the best and worst of times. Now, as Remi grieves the sudden death of her beloved husband of 25 years, and Bianca struggles with the fallout of a divorce she didn’t see coming, the women are amid their greatest challenges yet.

Remi and Gerard spent their honeymoon and summers in Napa and on the Sonoma Coast. Their love of wine led them to buy a Victorian home in Wine Country—and then a winery on the site of an age-old vineyard. They spoke endlessly about retiring to run their winery. But with Gerard gone, Remi must sort through his things and reevaluate their assets, and her future.

Bianca is grateful to be there for Remi. After all, Remi was her rock when Bianca’s husband left—and throughout the breast cancer diagnosis that followed. Now in remission, and with her daughter a thriving college freshman, Bianca hopes for a brighter future. But when Remi unearths a secret about her late husband so shattering even Bianca can’t help, the past casts a shadow over everything—and everyone . . .

Emotional and relatable, here is a captivating novel of the bonds of friendship, the power of love and forgiveness, and the revelation that sometimes comfort lies where you least expect it.

I received an ARC of Sunset Over Napa Valley on NetGalley and I was excited because I love diverse reads, and as a Puerto Rican woman, getting to see one of the main characters was US‑born Cuban American main character felt so close to home. I connected with her instantly, and that connection only grew as the story went on.
The relationship between the two main characters was written so well. Now that I’m in my 40s, a lot of what they were feeling really resonated with me. Grown-up worries: the growth, the heartache, real-women decisions, all of it. By around the halfway point I realized I was crying, because the emotions felt that real. It truly felt like I was reading about people I personally knew.
And I have to talk about the setting; the descriptions of Napa Valley were amazing. They so vivid and warm that I could almost see the vineyards and sunsets right in front of me. I’m honestly thinking about planning a trip now because the book made it sound so gorgeous.
Sunset Over Napa Valley was heartfelt, emotional, and just incredibly well told. I fell in love with these characters and the world around them. I need this to be made into a movie! I would highly recommend for anyone looking for a touching, character‑driven story that stays with you.

Received an Advanced Reader Copy and I recommend this book. It’s a balanced blend of decades-long women’s friendships and the challenges that strain them. Add to this a friendship spiced with Cuban and New Orleans heritages and you get a book filled with musical references, delightful, delicious-sounding meals and memories of beloved ancestors.

I enjoyed the descriptions of Napa Valley. I’ve been there and it’s as beautiful as described. All of the moments of relaxation with a glass of wine in hand made me want to be there with them.

Now a warning - this book takes place over what seems like one single very long summer so suspend your disbelief about how quickly some things happen. It’s okay. It’s fiction. In addition, for those of you like me with a medical background, some of that information is also not exactly correct but I forgive Ms. Garner.

This is a beach book or a rainy weekend book with characters that seem real. They have flaws - be warned. I loved the fact that although there are male love interests and other characters in the book, it mostly focuses on these two women friends, their daughters and the relationships amongst them.

Book Review: Sunset over Napa Valley by Monica Garner

In Sunset over Napa Valley, Monica Garner delivers a warm, emotionally layered novel that blends friendship, grief, and long-buried secrets against the lush backdrop of California’s wine country. At its heart, the story is about women at a crossroads—grappling with loss, betrayal, and the possibility of starting over—making it a resonant read for fans of contemporary women’s fiction.
The novel centers on lifelong friends Remi Landry and Bianca Fuentes Perez, Louisiana natives who escape to Napa Valley during one of the most difficult seasons of their lives. Remi is mourning the sudden death of her husband, Gerard, while Bianca is reeling from an unexpected divorce and recovering from breast cancer. Their shared history and deep bond provide emotional grounding as they confront new realities far from home. Garner frames their reunion with tenderness and authenticity, allowing readers to feel the weight of decades-long friendship shaped by both joy and hardship.
Napa Valley itself functions as more than a setting—it becomes a reflective space where grief and healing coexist. The vineyard Remi once planned to run with her husband symbolizes lost dreams and unanswered questions, and Garner’s atmospheric descriptions of wine country lend the story a gentle, reflective tone. The sense of place underscores the novel’s themes of legacy and reinvention, reinforcing how environments can hold both memory and possibility. [penguinran...mhouse.com]
A pivotal turn in the story occurs when Remi uncovers a devastating secret about her late husband, one that threatens to alter not only her understanding of her marriage but also the trust within her closest relationships. This revelation propels the narrative beyond quiet introspection into emotional conflict, raising questions about forgiveness, honesty, and how well we truly know those we love. Garner handles this tension with restraint, allowing emotional consequences to unfold naturally rather than relying on melodrama.
One of the novel’s strongest elements is its portrayal of mature female friendship. Bianca and Remi’s relationship feels earned and lived-in, marked by loyalty, private pain, and moments of friction that ring true. Their interactions—along with those involving their college-age daughters—highlight generational perspectives on love and independence, adding depth without overwhelming the central narrative.
While the pacing is deliberate, it suits the introspective nature of the story. Readers looking for high-stakes action may find the plot understated, but those who appreciate character-driven storytelling will likely find the emotional payoff rewarding. Garner’s prose is clear and compassionate, focusing more on emotional resonance than stylistic flourish.
Overall, Sunset over Napa Valley is a thoughtful, comforting novel about resilience, friendship, and the complicated paths toward healing. Monica Garner once again demonstrates her skill at portraying emotionally rich lives with empathy and nuance, making this a strong addition to contemporary women’s fiction and an appealing choice for book clubs and reflective readers alike.

Saintly Grace, Sinner Reality, and One Deliciously Messy Ride! 🍷🎢🥂

Let me tell you something, it's a good thing that Gerard was already gone to glory because had he been still breathing good oxygen in these streets, shit would have hit the fan. Remi is a saint and I'm a sinner 'cause I would have handled that totally different. Period! 😤✋🏾

Now that I've got that out of the way, the book review. ☺️

This was a very enjoyable read. It was paced well, had tropes that I could see myself in, and I loved being in the Bay area. Napa Valley was beautifully imagined in this book and I'm glad I got to visit.

The friendship between Remi and Bianca seemed real and authentic, for the most part, although Bianca was probably my least favorite character, in the beginning. Their relationship felt believable and very supportive, but Bianca was plucking my nerves by Chapter 11. Remi was beautifully written and I pretty much loved everything about her.

Sunset Over Napa Valley tackles some heavy topics like grief, divorce, and cancer recovery and the author handled them with such care. It felt balanced with the beautiful Napa setting, but it was a very emotional ride. I smiled many times and I frowned many times and I rolled my eyes many times; when the characters cried, I cried, but I thoroughly enjoyed all of the emotions that my body went through. And make no mistake, this story is messy ASF! And I don't know what this says about me, but I loved 'ER-SINGLE-BIT-OF-IT! 💅🏾

I absolutely loved Mila and Zoe's subplot as well. They were weaved into the story seamlessly; I almost wish it was longer just so we could get more character depth, growth, and development for the whole cast.

The Aftermath 🌷:
This one sent me on a 1,000-foot emotional rollercoaster that did not relent from Chapter 1 to Chapter 42, the end. Monica Garner has a delightful way of reeling you in before you even realize you've been reeled in. Every single character in this book made me want to give them a piece of my mind except for Leo; I wanted to give him a piece of something else. IYKYK. 🫦😉

I am rating this four stars, instead of five, because the transitions from one scene to the next felt like someone slamming on a vehicle's brakes and then flooring the accelerator. WHIPLASH! That's how it felt! In one sentence, someone would be eating a sandwich in a car; in the next sentence that same person would be standing in their kitchen. I was like "damn, how'd that happen?" 🤔 Overall, this was a great read though!

Quick Summary: A grown-folks-living-life, women's fiction novel

My Review: Sunset Over Napa Valley by Monica Garner is realistic, contemporary fiction. It is categorized as a "Multicultural Interest" story. The book is scheduled for release on 4/28/26.

About the Book: "The call of summer, sisterhood, and hearts in need of healing bring two best friends and their college-age daughters to Napa Valley, California’s breathtaking wine country—where a long-held secret threatens to forever alter their relationships . . ."

In My Own Words: Living, breathing, and doing life in one moment then facing tragedy, betrayal, and heartbreak in the next - this is the story of family. A family's love and healing after tumultuous seasons tell the truth of hearts forever changed.

My Final Say: This book was everything! I cannot even. I felt the story to my core. It touched on so much. It hit me like a whirlwind, if I am being honest. I cried on behalf of each woman. It was tragic and beautiful in the same breath. Garner definitely hit her stride with this diamond.

Say less.

*** The discussion guide in the back is a nice touch. I cannot wait to recommend this to my book clubs. It is more than worthy of a re-read and a healthy discussion.

Other: Readers who enjoy realistic fiction, stories with heartbreak and healing, as well as new beginnings, and phoenix rebirth scenarios will love this novel. It is book club worthy and then some.

“Sunset Over Napa Valley” was even better than I had expected/hoped. It’s the perfect summer read, beach read, book club read, you can read it with your friends, your sisters, your mother, your daughters; it is a really strong story of sisterhood, friendship, and femininity. I just loved it. After starting it, I didn’t want to put it down, and I was eager to pick it up again each time.

I was lucky enough to meet this author, Monica Garner, last summer at our Barnes & Noble opening, and got a signed copy of her book “Summer on Cape May”. I really liked it too, I just wanted a little more depth, because the characters were intriguing to me. So I came at SONV with a similar expectation, and was really hoping the characters would go a little deeper to really fill the story for my personal liking, and this topped my expectations! Remi and Bianca were both beautiful, rich, complex characters; their daughters, Zoe and Mila, were also greatly laid out and I loved all the intricacies of their lives woven into the story too. I was a little worried for Bianca’s character development, but she really came full circle and I was proud of her growth by the end, and honestly proud of everyone’s growth. Sometimes our hardest moments really are the catalyst that sets our life back on track to where we’re supposed to be.

My biggest takeaways from this novel were how you continue living after loss and learning to move forward even in your grief, and forgiveness. I can’t say enough how much this book spoke to me emotionally, there were parts that almost felt like I was reading from my own diary, and something about that was so healing. I am personally approaching a painful anniversary later this year and seeing these characters go through heartbreak so close to mine was incredibly touching to me. I wish I had the emotional stamina they do, but this felt like working towards peace finally.

I do not drink much (literally one glass in the last 7+ years), but I wish I could have a glass of wine from Joie to toast this book.

Adding, my friend mentioned there aren’t trigger warnings listed anywhere and part of this was really triggering for them, so here’s what I saw in the book that I know are triggers for some readers. ⬇️

TRIGGER WARNINGS:
death, grief, SA, pregnancy loss, drinking

The cover is honestly what first drew me to Sunset over Napa Valley, and it perfectly matches the reflective tone of the story. At its core, the book explores grief, betrayal, healing, and the quiet but powerful bonds of sisterhood.

What stood out to me most was how the story deals with loss in both a literal and figurative sense, losing people, trust, and the version of life you thought you had. The emotional restraint of the main character was interesting to watch unfold because, personally… she is better than me. I definitely felt like I was carrying some of the anger for her while reading.

The friendship dynamics were one of the stronger elements for me. The story really leans into long-term bonds between women, the kind where history, loyalty, and complicated emotions are all tangled together.

If you enjoy stories about female friendship, navigating betrayal, emotional healing after loss, and reflective settings that match the characters’ inner journeys, this might be one to pick up.

it was a thoughtful and emotional read that sits comfortably around a 3.7-star rating for me.

Thank you to Kensington Publishing for letting me read a complimentary copy before publication. Opinions expressed in this review are my own.

This book took me on a heartfelt journey through grown-up struggles, whether it be marital conflict, tense mother-daughter bonds, or business obstacles.

It commented on several deeper topics, but the one that stuck out to me the most was loss. The loss of oneself as you delicately try to balance showing up for others and yourself. The loss of a partner. The loss of trust. But woven throughout these hardships is the importance of friendship, particularly between women. It was a bit of an emotional rollercoaster.

I also felt frustrated for the female characters who were put in tough positions because of the men in their lives. Despite that, they do their best to balance all kinds of responsibilities, expectations, and their own dreams.

This was an easy read with a simplistic writing style that I found to be a bit repetitive at times. Overall, it was enjoyable and I reflected on the burdens of adulthood, especially as a woman.

Summer of Revelations
I received this book as an ARC so thank you to netgalley and the publisher. I asked for the arc because of the book cover, it is beautiful. The book did not disappoint I enjoyed how descriptive it was with the scenery and food. The story itself was about love, loss, betrayal and really achieving your goals and succeeding. I know I shouldn't have laughed but when Remi thought about throwing "it" in the trash I giggled and was like "Yes, girl do it". Sometimes the bad guy wins, and, in this case, she did and I was disappointed. Bianca's only grace from me was her love of Prince. I also love his music, and I like how music was sprinkled throughout the book. The ARC didn't have a standalone playlist not sure if the final copy will. I just created my own as artist and songs were mentioned. I guess my one complaint was too many plotlines. It was like she was making a salad, opened the fridge and just started tossing things in - Remi/Bianca/Jen/Zoe/Bas/Mila. It was a strong enough story without the extras.

I enjoyed Sunset over Napa Valley by Monica Garner. Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for the ARC.

This was a great read! The plot was engaging and flowed really well, and I found myself fully invested in the characters and their emotional journey. The story centers on a second-chance romance between former lovers who are forced back into each other’s lives, where unresolved feelings and past misunderstandings resurface. Their dynamic is layered with tension, lingering chemistry, and emotional growth as they learn to communicate and heal old wounds.

The Napa Valley setting adds such a warm, atmospheric backdrop that enhances both the intimacy and the emotional stakes of their relationship.

Tropes included:
• Second chance romance
• Former lovers reunited
• Small-town romance
• Slow burn
• Emotional healing
• Found family
• Opposites attract

Overall, this was a heartfelt, engaging read that blends romance with personal growth beautifully.

This book is about grief, secrets, betrayal, loyalty, healing, forgiveness, second chances, starting over… and finally, peace. It was honestly really well written.
You get to see the relationship between the main characters unfold, especially how they both deal with loss in their own ways. Remi’s maturity and loyalty really stood out to me. She just wasn’t mad enough for me. But at the same time, she was very assertive and communicated her feelings clearly, which I respected. She has that kind heart where she shows up for people, even when it’s hard.
I also really liked that Remi kept going with the vineyard. She didn’t let everything she was dealing with stop her. Like she said, it was her own thing, something just for her, her dream—and she held onto that.
And the setting?? Napa Valley was written so beautifully it added so much to the story. At one point, I was like… yeah, I’m moving there🍷
And beautiful cover! love it so much

Thank you for this Arc!

Sunset Over Napa Valley had everybody going through it and I mean EVERYBODY.

Just when you think you've figured out what one character is carrying, another layer gets pulled back and someone else is dealing with something just as heavy. This story doesn't shy away from the raw, uncomfortable feelings that come with grief, anger, and betrayal — and it's better for it.

Monica delivered with that plot twist, I did not see it coming. 10s across the board. 👏🏾

My only critiques are that it did feel like a lot was happening at once — the story carried so much weight that some of it got lost in the pile. The timeline also felt a little short given everything the characters went through, and some of it needed more room to breathe. And even though I'm not usually a multi-POV reader, I actually found myself wishing for it here because the daughters' storylines were such a huge part of the story and deserved more space on the page.

I really enjoyed this ARC. The storyline kept me fully engaged from beginning to end. It explores several fragile and emotional topics so definitely check the trigger warnings beforehand.

The story centers on the friendship between Remi and Bianca two Louisiana natives as they navigate the ups and downs of their businesses and family lives. Remi is recovering from the death of her husband and Bianca is getting over a divorce. I loved that much of the setting takes place in the Napa region. As someone who appreciates a good glass of wine that detail immediately pulled me in.

At its heart this is a story about forgiveness loyalty and showing up for the people you love even when it is difficult. I am trying very hard not to include any spoilers but just know this one delivers on emotion and depth.

Thank you NetGalley and Kensington Publishing Corp. for this advanced reader copy.

i loved 'summer on cape may' by monica garner, so i was very excited to read 'sunset over napa valley'. unfortunately, books had a very different effect on me. while i loved the first one, the second one brought a lot of not very pleasant feelings.

friendships are never perfect (and people are never perfect either), but 'sunset over napa valley' provides a very uncomfortable look at two people who love each other but are also jealous of each other. sometimes the problems they had felt too drama-y, and while the story itself has a lot of hope, i definitely lost it at times while reading.
alongside that, we have beautiful descriptions of scenery and food that make you transfer into the places and things the characters encounter.

not my favorite read, but i'll definitely be here for monica's next book.

thank you netgalley and kensington publishing for this arc.

Emotional rollercoaster

This book had every emotion floating out of me from start to finish! I was happy, angry, sad, I felt like I was a shadowed character in the book. It’s so funny that the one character I wanted to drag was the character that became my favorite. Bianca brought everything out of me only to capture my heart at the end. She was a firecracker but she also went through soo much I understood her fight at the end of it all. This book had my interest from start to finish I was invested in learning this secret so every page pulled me in deeper and deeper. I also loved the fact that it didn’t take long to get to the point. Remi taught me about empathy and forgiveness and how to give selflessly. This is definitely a must read. Now I want to go to Napa and get lost in the city drinking wine and enjoying a charcuterie board!

Remi and Bianca’s friendship, tested by grief and secrets, is believable and real. Their story as well as their daughter's (who are also best friends) stories are so well written and tug at your heartstrings. The beautiful Napa Valley was a perfect setting for the story. If you love women’s fiction about love, betrayal, forgiveness healing, and the bonds that last, this book is for you. Perfect summer/beach read!

I received a copy of Sunset Over Napa Valley from NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.

This story follows four women - Remi and Bianca, childhood friends and their daughters Zoe and Mila as they weather a tragedy in Remi and Zoe’s life. Garner’s story addresses loss, betrayal, forgiveness and second chances. Her characters are generally well fleshed out and the conflicts aren’t extremely drawn out. The book reads easily and it’s easy to get enveloped in the characters and their growth.

Wow! As someone who doesn’t fully read the synopsis this book took me on a ride that I was not expecting. I will say it makes me want to visit Napa really soon. Remi hands down. Was a strong woman, wife mother and friend and the GLUE! Everyone was dealt a hard situation. And it was so interesting to see it all unfold. If youre interested in not your typical summer girlfriends vacation. With a lil drama, read this!

This was a great read about the ups & downs of a lifetime friendship and how the FMCs found their joy after overcoming obstacles.

Sunset over Napa Valley is very much a “healing-through-chaos” kind of novel. It's less about plot twists and more about emotional unbinding and rebuilding. Two lifelong friends and their daughters deal with life's struggles as well as an intense secret. The core of this book is so emotional!
