Rate this book

Once a bright and bubbly young teen, Addison’s nightmares become her reality when family movie night turns into a home invasion. Kidnapped and disappearing without a trace, 11 years of captivity by the hands of one man, grooms our heroine into a ruthless assassin. She managed to survive, but at what cost?
When she finally takes back control, her sights are set on one thing — to keep moving. Gaining a new identity ( Mikayla ), she runs from the demons set out to chase her. But when her past comes hurdling into her present, can she keep those she loves safe from what’s coming?

Zane, Kade, Max, and Ryder thought they lost the girl they loved long ago, but that never stopped them from searching. And after years of nothing but disappointment, who would have thought they would each accidentally run into her within a week of each other? Now they know she’s alive, and she’s here, but can they stop her from running again?

Mikayla isn’t the same girl they once knew. The pieces are still there, buried beneath years of blood, obedience, and survival. And while they’re desperate to keep her close, she’s just as desperate to hide those parts of her. The parts of her she fears they will never understand.
But what happens when the men she’s always loved are determined to see through her mask? Because monsters can wear many faces, and now she’s terrified they’ll recognize hers.

You did it again Mrs. Hunter. You did it again! Author J.R. Hunter has a way of letting me feel all the feels. What a great, thrilling and also heartwarming story was this.

First of all Mikayla. What a badass FMC. Her humor, her way of coping. I love her honesty and just being herself and no effing to give anymore. Best Quote at the end was the GO-GO-Gadget extendable neck quote. I peed myself from laughing so hard.

There was a big twist in the story I didn't see coming at all. Real curious if all my theories are right. The story was fast paced, really great wring style that was easy to follow all the characters. Because multiple POV'S is sometimes like a maze, but it just flowed in this story. And the boys! Ow the boys..

Just love the reverse harem part. Also the emotions all the boys are showing is like a breath of fresh air. No they are not all like bulky tough guys. They also hurt and have mental health problems because of the trauma that happend. And they aren’t afraid of showing it. Love the love and family they found in each other. All there different personalities just click together. And also love the fact that the reverse harem might become a why choose?? Really curious how that is turning out to go.

If you like a badass FMC, reverse harem, dark romance, lots of trauma, dark humor, found family and just a lot of love. This one is for you!🖤🖤🖤🖤

This was my very first ARC read, and I went into it without any specific expectations. What drew me in was the promise of dark romance (and the detailed trigger list). I love truly dark books, so I was excited to see how this one would deliver, and it definitely did!

Ratings
**Spicy:** 🌶️🌶️🌶️ 3/5
**Plot:** ⭐⭐⭐ 3/5
**Characters:** ⭐⭐⭐⭐ 4/5
**Overall:** ⭐⭐⭐⭐ 4/5

The book begins with a (for an enthousiatic, like me) fairly long introduction where we meet Addie, Zane, Ryder, Max, and Kade. While this section gave a lot of insight into the characters, I have to admit I was impatient to get to the action. For me, the story truly started at the moment of the kidnapping, that was the point where the tension skyrocketed and I was completely hooked.

Our heroine, Addy (or Bear, or Mik), is an absolute badass. She’s bold, witty, and fearless to the point where I often thought, girl, you really dare! Her internal dialogue is sharp and funny, and it had me laughing out loud more than once. The narrative is sprinkled with flashbacks that slowly reveal the past. Given the trigger list, I expected more extensive flashbacks, but the amount included was just enough to create a strong thread through the story and help me understand the characters better.
The story feels a bit rushed sometimes, but I also feel like its balanced at the same time. I think the fast pace fits the story quite well, which is why I liked it a lot.

Her relationship with the guys is genuinely sweet. Max and Ry are cutiepies, but personally, Zane was my baby, being all daddy over her, though that might be influenced by the very cool footnote the author added in the ARC (AWE!). Kade also won a place in my heart as the story progressed, probably because I saw parts of myself in his mental struggles. I also loved the mention of MMA, with Zade and Ry being athletes I hope to read more of that in the next book!

And the spice… well, let’s just say it’s hot. 🔥 You’ll have to discover that for yourself (smirk).

The cliffhanger is exactly why I usually wait until all the books in a series are released before diving in. But of course, that wasn’t possible this time. Now I’m stuck waiting for the next installment and I can’t wait to see where the story goes next!

I also want to give a huge thank you to the author for allowing me to read this book as an ARC. It was such a special experience, and I absolutely loved it. The only downside? Now I’m left impatiently waiting for the next book in the series!

I’ll start out by saying this was my very first ARC read so I went into it without any sort of background, review, recommendation or expectation. And I can say with certainty that it did not disappoint!

It was such a a fun twist to a main female character! You usually get books where the female lead seems like a damsel in distress, or helpless, or sort of “save me” - but Addison/Mikayla was a normal girl turned assassin. The author did an amazing job at giving her some grit and structure! But they also did a great job at giving her heart and emotion.

The plot was also fun and action packed and really gave you a good run for a story. It starts out a bit slow until the real action kicks in but even the slow beginning gets you hooked!

Then we have the 4 MMC’s. Each one brings a different vibe and a different personality/male trope. Which is different in a good way! Not each one is written like the other. The relationship building that all 5 main characters go through individually and together is well paced throughout the story, and the flashbacks really give you good context as to who the characters are in current time.

Then the finale - the cliffhanger! That’s all I’m saying for that part.

Overall I am so glad this was my first ARC and I can’t wait to see more from JR Hunter! Thank you for giving me the opportunity to enjoy this before the big release day. Congratulations JR Hunter!

The spice level though, it was on point. Addy is a total babe, bold, witty, and fearless, just like me. I love that you can relate to her, and the five views added an extra layer of depth to the story. What was it about Addy's character was all about her confidence and her sass.

This book is amazing and hot I want all four of the guys. I love how it ended. Follow Addison, Zane, Kade, Ryder and Max, through a very tough event and how they come together. Hunter keeps you captivated through the five points of view, and she also makes you want to throw the book or e-reader at times or scream at the characters. She takes you through highs and lows for each character perfectly.

What the actual ****
I'm left on the biggest cliff hanger ever!!!
This was such an amazing read. I could tell it was going to be a 5 ⭐ read for me. Absolutely loved every page of it. Devoured within 24hrs. Great in depth storyline, a fierce conditioned badass FMC. Four gorgeous MMC's that will never give up and burn the world for her.
Aside though, this story begins with real raw emotion, heartache and tragedy. A journey full of trauma and a fight for freedom.
Killing Darkness is a thrilling page turner, a fight for survival and a love that will never give up. You will not be disappointed in this read!

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️.5
🌶️🌶️🌶️

Once bright and carefree, Addison’s life is destroyed at 15 when she’s taken from her home. For eleven years, she’s held captive and shaped into a weapon, an assassin.

Now living as Mikayla, she’s finally free and determined to keep running from the past. But when it catches up to her, everything she’s built is suddenly at risk.

Zane, Kade, Max, and Ryder never stopped searching for the girl they lost. What they find… is someone far more dangerous.

I ate this book up, honestly couldn’t get enough. It’s dangerous, it’s heartbreaking, it’s sexy, it’s everything. Check your triggers as it does deal with some tough theme, very well I might add. Mik is still so badass though and doesn’t let her past bring her down, she is fearless and will do whatever she can to protect the ones she loves.

Now the boys 😮‍💨 they are so well done, Zane the protector , Max the provider, Kade brains and Ryder warm cuddle. They each have their own personalities and demons but all adore Mikayla and would do anything for her. Why pick one of them when you can have them all 👀

The book just lost half a star for me for the cutesie pet names which is a bit of an ick for me.

Thank you so much J.R Hunter for giving me the chance to read your book, I had a wild time and recommend it to anyone who likes something dark and spicy. But….what was that ending? 🤯 when is book 2 coming?

If you like a strong FMC, you will love Mikayla. She isn't just a survivor, she's a thriver! She took her experiences and used them to build herself up.

Daddy Zane. Oh my. I mean all the guys are great, but Daddy Zane is everything you want in a book boyfriend. Well, what I want anyway.

The book ends on a cliffhanger. I wasn't expecting that and while I hate having to wait for more, I'm also happy to have more time with my new favorite RH.

There's an early plot twist in the prologue and I spent most of the book wondering if that would ever be explained and then figured it out during a flashback in a later chapter. I could be mistaken but I'll have to wait for the next book to find out I guess.

I was lucky enough to snag an ARC of this and I M so glad because it was brilliant. A snarky damaged heroine and the broken men she was forced to leave behind. Friends to lovers of my favourite trope and this hot the spot. I love that they never gave up on their bear. This was well written action packed with top tier spice and some laugh out loud moments.

5 stars isn't an acceptable option. More it is.

"Own it, live it, love it, regret nothing"

WTF did I just read?!?!? And I mean that in the best way possible. This consumed me. From the very beginning. Immediately I was laughing, smiling, swooning a bit because their tight friendship is just absolutely everything. Then I gasped. Palms got sweaty. Held my breath. Shit hit the fan so fast. This was before Ch.1 even started by the way. 😳🤯😭

I absolutely LOVED this! The author takes you on this intense emotional rollercoaster ride. Experiencing 5 POVS (yea, you read that right) which trust me when I say you will love every single character and every single POV in this. One very strong, badass, funny, everything in one FMC and 4 incredibly irrisistable, have you constantly swooning MMCs. I honestly can't pick a favorite. Yes 10s across the board. The author made me love all of them for different reasons ❤️ They never stopped looking for her 😭

Having a million questions running through my mind and having to follow the trail of breadcrumbs and patiently wait for everything to be answered with glimpses into the past. This was captivating and I couldn't put it down. It had me screaming at certain points. The flow, timeline, anticipation building, and how this is written in general is absolutely genius. Just gonna add this one to my favorites list. 😍

This is dark, thrilling, unhinged, will make your heart bleed, give you chills, and make you completely feral. Check the TW buffet at the beginning as some topics might be disturbing to some. While you're reading remember to breathe. I occasionally forgot. 😳 And don't get me started on the ending I'm not ready to discuss it. 🤯😭

This book is absolutely captivating—equal parts emotional, addictive, and undeniably hot, the spice was spicy! I found myself fully invested in all four of the guys, and I loved the way the story ultimately came together. Following Addison, Zane, Kade, Ryder, and Max as they navigate a deeply challenging event and slowly form their bond was such an engaging experience.

Hunter masterfully weaves together five distinct points of view, creating a narrative that is both immersive and dynamic. Her writing keeps you hooked from the very first page, and there are moments that will make you want to laugh, cry, scream at the characters, or even toss your kindle out of sheer frustration—in the best possible way. Each character’s emotional highs and lows are explored with depth and intention, making their journeys feel authentic and meaningful.

The pacing, character development, and emotional intensity blend beautifully, delivering a story that is gripping from start to finish. Hunter truly excels at crafting complex characters and interconnected arcs that pull you in and refuse to let go.

A fantastic read that left me wanting even more.

ARC Review
This story grabs you from page one and does not let go. Told through five POVs, we follow Addison and the four boys who have been her best friends forever…until one horrific night shatters everything. Addison is taken, and while she fights to survive without completely breaking, the boys spend every single day searching for her, refusing to give up hope.
When they finally come face-to-face with her again, she’s not the same girl they lost. She’s a total badass now, shaped by everything she’s endured and she isn’t sure she wants to be found.
The plot is fast-paced, emotional, and gripping with the perfect touch of spice woven in. It’s a story of survival, friendship, loyalty, and love, and the author absolutely nails it. I couldn’t put it down. I desperately wanted the happy ending, but I also didn’t want the story to be over.
And then that cliffhanger… Addison’s kidnapper returns, and she’s taken again. Will the boys find her? Will they save her—or will she save herself?
I need the next book now. I can’t wait for more!

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ / 🌶️🌶️🌶️🌶️

Killing Darkness is an emotional whirlwind that absolutely wrecked me—in the best way. Addison, also known as Bear, is a heroine who has endured more than most characters ever face. Kidnapped and tortured for over a decade, her resilience is staggering. J.R. Hunter does an incredible job portraying her trauma, strength, and slow resurgence into the world she was torn from.

What makes this story truly shine is the unwavering devotion of the four men who refuse to give up on her. Their loyalty and determination to find her create a beautiful tension throughout the book, and when they finally reunite… I melted. It’s raw, tender, and worth every agonizing page leading up to it.

And the ending? The ending killed me. I’m deceased. I will not be recovering anytime soon.

With a solid 4/5 stars and a spicy 4/5 peppers, Killing Darkness blends dark themes, emotional healing, and steamy connection into a gripping, unforgettable read. If you love fierce devotion, found family energy, and a heroine clawing her way back from darkness, this book is absolutely worth the emotional roller coaster.

Can confirm, this book is absolutely phenomenal! I found myself laughing, crying, and gripping my kindle in suspense. THANK GOD for my kindle straps or it would have been flying across the room the second I realised this masterpiece ended with such a serious cliffhanger. I NEED to know what happens next and will be eagerly waiting for the next book!

For those who love books like the Edge of Darkness trilogy by Leigh Rivers, this one's for you! Killing Darkness features four beautiful MMCs (Zane, Kade, Max, and Ryder) who are quite literally ride or die for the FMC (Addison/Mikayla). They simply can't afford to lose her again. This book is a magnificent storm of love, grief, and suspense that deserves all the hype it can get! Please be sure to read the trigger warnings before diving into this unforgettable read!

I'm super thankful to have been chosen as an ARC reader for this book and I am voluntarily leaving this review! :)

ARC REVIEW 📚 🤗

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️✨ — 4.5 Stars and I’m Still Thinking About It

Okay so… this book?? It grabbed me by the throat from page one and refused to let go. Like… I opened it thinking I’d read a few pages and suddenly I’m 60% in, dehydrated, and emotionally unstable in the best way. The atmosphere? Dark and tense. The emotions? Messy, raw and unhinged. The kind of story that makes you pause and stare at a wall for a minute because what did I just read (in a good way). It’s one of those stories that keeps tugging at you even when you’re trying to sleep. And man did it try to sleep 🤭🫣😁

The relationship between Mikayla and her men is so beautifully interlaced. Before the end of the prologue you can already feel how deep their friendship runs. Their connection stays strong all the way through, and when they all come together… it honestly felt like I was being made whole right alongside them.

And listen. I don’t think I’ll ever get enough of them🤭🥰 especially Daddy Zane. That man? He has me in an actual chokehold. I am down BAAAADDDDD and I’m not even ashamed..

The storyline is top-tier, perfectly paced, and filled with emotion and tension in all the right places. And for my spice girlies, here’s your tiny spicy spoiler:
when the heat hits, it HITS.
The scenes were super spicy.....like, “put your phone down for a second and fan yourself” spicy but still felt meaningful and connected to the story.

And THEN that ending??? Excuse me??? The way the last few chapters had me flipping pages like my life depended on it… only for the book to end right when I needed MORE. I’m genuinely feral waiting for book 2.🥴🤪🫣😏

Overall, a solid 4.5 stars. Beautiful connections, amazing spice, addictive storyline....and now I’m emotionally unwell until the next book drops.

Ma'am you can keep us hanging like this! When is the next book coming?

If you like, a badass fmc after a getting groomed to be one forced by trauma, who still got a lot of banter in her. 4 boys who grow up together to be very hot man's and after this traumatic experience where they lose the only girl they ever love, getting depressed and found their own unique way of handling it. They always stay together and vowed with each other to not give up on the search for their missing piece. This is your story.

I loved it, is was definitely a slowburn but when you get there holy moly that was hot!
This got everything, trauma, betrayal, love, friendship and how further you go in the book the better it gets. But damn that cliffhanger, I'm impatiently waiting for book 2 lol.

4.5 stars, 3.5 chili peppers

This book starts with a bang and I was hooked right away.
The MMCs' devotion to the FMC is both endearing and sexy.
I love how the author shows how the bonds have strengthened between all
4 MMC's because of what happened in the past, and that they love Mikayla so fiercely.
It’s lovely to read all of their points of view, and thought processes.
Mikayla, the FMC, is tough, resilient and spunky.
This book is dark, but also full of love and light.
The cliffhanger though! I’m crying! I need the next book!!
I'm so glad I was able to be an ARC reader for this book, it's an honor to be a reviewer.

As a newer reader to the dark romance genre, this book did not disappoint!

J.R. Hunter writes in such a way that you really feel what the characters are going through. From the fear of the collective character trauma to the longing each of the four male POV's carries.

Mikayla is the world's most badass assassin whose life on the run finally catches up to her.

Her four men (Zane, Max, Kade and Ryder) will stop at nothing to find their girl, their Bear.

All the drama with all the spice, I did not want to put this book down!

I don’t even think there are enough words to do this book justice! My girl Hunter absolutely KILLED IT with this one. I swear I never put it down—every spare second I had, I was right back in it, devouring any page I could.
The characters? Thrilling. Addictive. The kind that make you flip pages so fast you’re convinced flames might shoot out.
The story, the plot, the smut—OMG, the SMUT. 🔥🔥🔥
And let’s talk about that ending… because it will 98.8% piss you off in the best possible way. But honestly? That’s how you know it’s a good one.
Whatever you do, add this to your list immediately. I cannot WAIT to see more of Addison and her men… especially Daddy Zane. 😮‍💨🔥

Killing Darkness is a fast-paced, atmospheric thriller that hooks you from page one and refuses to let go. J.R. Hunter blends suspense, character depth, and just the right amount of grit to create a story that feels both cinematic and emotionally grounded. The protagonist’s inner struggles are as compelling as the external danger, and the tension builds in a way that never feels forced.

If you enjoy dark thrillers with strong characters and a relentless pace, this one’s absolutely worth the read.

This book was incredible. J.R. really set the background for the friendship and the trauma. I really didnt see it coming. From the first couple chapters I was hooked. She wrote the feelings and conflicts so well, you really felt the heartbreak and discouragement and yet the hope at the same time. The depth of friendship, longing, pining and hope really set the foundation for the why choose to be a no brainer. The FMC was an absolute strong woman, headstrong, stubborn, witty and bads$$. However we know those 4 men of hers aren't gonna let it be as is, theyre gonna help their girl. Book 1 isn't even officially released and im highly anticipating book 2!

ARC review. First I’d like to thank JR Hunter for trusting me with your novel. It was a pleasure to read your fun spicy why chose dark romance thriller. FMC is ripped away from her from her life as a teenager and trained to be an assassin. Over a decade later she escapes and while on the run finds her 4 best friends from childhood, only they are grown and hot and all want her. This reverse harem has yearning, spice, mystery and plot twists. Check your trigger warnings, some subject matter is dark.

Haha but Mikayla, she’s a badass and her sense of humor is great I love the seriousness but then also the snarky comments make me laugh! I have my theories of Colt and who Mik is but damn I can’t wait to find out if I’m right. You left us hanging in wild spot! Thank you though this was amazing! ***** ARC Review *****

Girl! I'm new to reading ARCs, I am just excited to support smaller or indie authors. So thank you for allowing me the opportunity to read this!
I fell in love with all the characters. The intro was super long, but definitely worth it. I felt the action started right away. Definitely read the trigger warnings on this. The flashbacks were very traumatic, but it just shows how strong Mikayla (FMC) is. Despite her trauma, she is actually hilarious. I loved her internal dialogue. At times I felt I couldn't understand her behavior, but I've never been through the trauma that she has been. It could be appropriate. I loved that all the MMCs expressed their feelings. Kade, Max, Zade, and Ryder. I don't know... Kade might be my favorite. Maybe Zade. But why choose right!? The spice was soooo good. I was hoping for more of a plot. It didn't get there till closer towards the end of the book. It ended on a massive cliff hanger! I guess we will have to see what happens with the guys and Mikayla in the next book. If you enjoy dark romance, reverse harem, and a badass FMC who can take care of herself but loves her men, you will enjoy this book!

The highs in this book are high, and the lows will dang near kill you.

The trauma home girl has been through is wild (check the trigger warnings). It’s definitely a dark book, with themes that can possibly trigger people. I loved it. I love how she overcame the trauma, and used it to make herself stronger.

The guys give you all of the feels. They give you all of the tropes. It’s why I love why choose.
