I enjoyed the premise of this story. Punk Hearts Playbook swept me right into the 80’s Texas punk life of Von and the Texas college football scene of Trey. Their journey is full of grit and vulnerability, especially as they navigate their growing feelings. Their dynamic adds another layer to the story, bringing tenderness and tension, heart and heat, into a world that’s otherwise loud, messy, and unapologetically raw.

The atmosphere is spot on, the attitude of the characters is angsty, and the cliches are very reminiscent of what I imagine the 80’s to have been. However, the writing lingers on the details a little too much for my taste and was often times repetitive, which slowed the pace when I wanted the plot to move forward. For this reason, I struggled to stay attentive throughout the book. But I can see that same quality appealing to readers who love getting fully lost in the vibe of a story.

Punk Heart Playbook by Sabine Raines is a lively, heartfelt romance set in 1989 Texas, where punk rebellion collides with college football tradition. The story follows Von Kelly, a bold punk artist running from her past, and Trey “Bear” Maddox, a reserved football star whose quiet strength hides deep emotions. Raines skillfully balances music, art, and sports, creating a vivid backdrop of bonfires, stadium lights, and coastal escapes. The chemistry between Von and Trey feels genuine, growing through tender moments and emotional challenges rather than clichés. Themes of identity, courage, and belonging run strongly throughout the novel. With its nostalgic setting, relatable characters, and warm romantic arc, this debut is an engaging read for fans of sports romance and opposites-attract love stories.

I really, really wanted to like this book more. As a GenXer especially. I loved the story of Trey and Von. But the repetition of some of the details were infuriating. I bet I read the word ZeroCola 200 times at least. I can appreciate the attention to detail but the droning on for five pages of football plays was exhausting, same with some of the food descriptions, or the girls hyping each other up. I found myself skimming over several parts and I hate doing that, especially with an ARC and to give my honest opinion.

This story is set in the late 80s in a college environment, and we meet Von, a feisty young girl, and Trey, a tireless athlete.

The book has everything I usually like: strong protagonists, wild parties, good chemistry, and a vibe when there were no phones and the music was loud. However, I struggle with this one because I found the pace a bit slow; there were a lot of descriptions and repetitive scenes. I also didn't enjoy the steamy scenes.

The book is perfect for people who enjoy reading about sports, sex, and want to emerge deeply in the atmosphere where the characters live.
