A brand new, stunningly powerful and gripping World War II saga of defiance, danger, and daring women who refused to be silenced. Inspired by the true-life stories of The Women's Secret Army. Perfect for fans of Kate Quinn and A Call to Spy. 🪖📖 They said women were a liability in war. They were wrong...
April 1942
A dangerous call to duty…
Constance Hughes has always felt on the outside, never quite good enough, always doubting herself. So when she is asked to participate in a dangerous undercover mission to help the war effort, Connie is fearful – what if she fails and lets her friends – and country - down?
Behind enemy lines…
A fluent linguist, Connie is perfect for the task ahead, but it means being dropped into France – currently under German occupation. Getting there is dangerous, the mission fraught, and if Connie is captured, it will mean certain death. But determined to do her duty, she agrees.
The prospect of no return home.
Connie knows rural France well, but her mission isn’t as straightforward as she hoped. With German soldiers everywhere, Connie is under intense pressure. And when she meets a fellow British soldier hiding in the woods she is torn between helping him and saving herself.
But with only herself to rely on, Connie discovers a strength she never knew she had. And a new determination to get herself and the injured soldier mission accomplished.
A heart-stopping story of courage and the hidden heroines who risked everything to change the course of history. Inspired by the true-life stories of The Women's Secret Army. Perfect for fans of Kate Quinn and Lana Kortchik.
Alice May writes contemporary, historical and saga fiction. Her new series, The Resistance Girls is inspired by the true story of a highly trained secret army of women working undercover to protect British coastal communities during World War Two.
Having always dreamed of being a writer, Alice finally put pen to paper in her forties. She lives in the New Forest on the Dorset/Hampshire border and gains inspiration from walking both in the forest and along the coast.
Alice also writes non-fiction, including memoir (The House That Sat Down Trilogy) and a colourful series of 'How to Draw The Alice May Way' books, suitable for all ages. She loves public speaking and regularly attends writing festivals, libraries and social groups to give presentations.
I have read all the books in the series so far - and my word this was possibly the best so far.
I do recommend reading the whole series to understand all the characters but this could be read as a stand-alone. The women who made up the Resistance Girls were so brave and patriotic. This books centered around Constance/Connie/Cecille. She has been brought up as the younger sister of much older half-sisters and had been told often enough that she was ‘ a Constant failure’. So her self confidence and belief were at an all-time low. She didn’t even think she deserved the friendship of people like Fliss, Wren. Lexi, Jo and the others who she had met as part of the Women’s Secret Army. However she had been brought up to be fluent in French and German and hence was trained to be an operative sent into occupied France and to retrieve some scientific papers.
There is much bravery and heroics and many times Constance is required to use her training to help to save her Grandmother. Little did she realise that she was part of the Resistance herself. A fine band of strong women who get to realise their own worth.
Connie realises that there are other trainees out to cause her harm, her colleague Marianne doesn’t have such a great time when parachuted into France. She also realise that someone is following her and meets Tom, an Airman who was shot down and has been hiding for months. The bit that was slightly contrived was that Tom was Wren’s twin. Wren or Serenity was the main character of an earlier book. Connie risks all to bring back Leah the child of the scientist whose work she had been sent to retrieve. Another example of how women were undervalued as the inventor was Leah’s mother.
The authors notes were very useful and explained where fact and fiction blended but it was obvious that Alice G.May had done a massive amount of research before she embarked on this extremely well written book.
It’s not often that a book of this genre is so exciting and keeps you wanting to turn one page then one more chapter.
This latest instalment of The Resistance Girls series can be read as a standalone. Having read the others, though, I found I had a better appreciation of the resistance girls and the bonds formed between them, bonds that weren't advised but were difficult not to form. It is also great to learn about Tom, the twin of one of the other women in the Resistance! He plays a big part in helping Constnace with her mission in France.
The story had me on the edge of my seat - desperately wanting Constance to succeed. I am sure I was holding my breath sometimes when she was on the verge of being discovered! There are some very hair-raising moments, and not once did I take it for granted that she would achieve her goal and return to Britain unscathed.
There were some surprising twists and turns I didn't expect. It was a very dramatic story with just enough romance to keep the book from being too deep.
I am always deeply moved when I read books set during WW2 because they are based on real people and the roles they played in keeping Britain safe. Real people risked their lives, not just the brave soldiers, but people like Constance and her friends, who were part of the women's resistance! I love this whole series because the author makes you think about those women who aren't mentioned as much as men. I find it fascinating!
I got lost in this action packed WW2 Historical Fiction. The story gives glimpses into a world I can only read about. I was soon transported to Nazi occupied France, following Connie on her mission to retrieve research materials. But before she took the flight to France she had to have specialized training.
Imagine being transported under the darkness of night, blindfolded and in silence. If she failed; she risked being contained until the end of the war. The training was extensive and dangerous, but not as dangerous as what she discovers.
The risks increase as soon as she lands in France. With every step she could be caught. With every contact with the enemy she risked discovery. There are so many nail biting moments. The thrills and chills added so much to the story. She frequently puts herself in danger.
Thankfully, an unexpected Brit has her back. A downed pilot saw her drop. He found where she hid her gear. If he could find it so could the enemy. She just might be his way home. That is if they both survive what is to come.
Alice G. May does not disappoint with the third instalment of the Resistance Girls series. An unputdownable read takes the reader from a hidden training ground for covert operatives straight into the heart of occupied Paris. I’ve thoroughly enjoyed every book in this series, and Danger Awaits the Resistance Girls is another powerful reminder of the brave, clever, resilient women who fought alongside the men, yet remain the hidden heroes of history. Inspired by true stories, this well written, gripping novel highlights not only their courage but also the deep bonds and friendships forged in the darkest of times. I can’t wait to continue following this incredible series. 4 ½ stars I would like to thank the author, Boldwood Books and NetGalley for my copy of this novel, in exchange for my honest review. #DangerAwaitstheResistanceGirls #NetGalley
I enjoyed this novel set in WWII in France. A Resistance Girl is sent to France on a mission from England. Though suspenseful, the storyline is really a romantic one. The characters are good or bad people, not much depth, but still, pleasant to read as a light novel. I received a digital copy of this novel from NetGalley and I have voluntarily written an honest review.
I couldn’t wait to read this third instalment and it didn’t disappoint. Constance / Connie is assigned to an overseas mission team and uses the mission to France to reconnect with her Grandmother. Along the way she meets Tom an airman trying to get home to England. The trick is to maintain a distance while they both carry out their mission. Thanks to Alice and her publisher.
I am really enjoying the development of each of the womens characters as well as the little interlinking plot lines. I love the way each women has her own insecurities snd that these books celebrate the hidden roles women undertook during WW2.
Brilliant book. Really good that the focus was on the value and capabilities of women during the war. Churchill was right when he said no-one would suspect a woman, they achieved do.much. Amaxing
An excellent story about WW2 Very well written with characters that are normal and believable rather than superman/women like and not real. A beautiful story at a very difficult period in history when a lot of heroes and heroines reached adulthood.
