Katrina Davenport has opened a coffee shop and bookstore in the notorious Raven’s Cottage, once the home of a 17th century witch known as Magik Meg. The locals have told Kat stories, of how the cottage is haunted by the witch and her 'demon' lover, but Kat doesn’t believe in witches, or ghosts, or anything that goes bump in the dead of night. Every strange thing that happened since she moved in must have a perfectly logical explanation.
Unfortunately it doesn’t matter what Kat believes because someone (or something) is determined to see her leave...
Something Wicked is a stand alone cozy mystery with a hint of romance and general spookiness, and can be read as a prequel to the author's An English Village Mystery series.
Most of my stories are set in small villages filled with quirky characters. These are partly inspired by the places I’ve lived in over the years, although the characters are straight out of my imagination! I currently live in Wales, close to a famous library and two ruined castles. My husband thinks we moved here by accident.
My first published novel was Smoke Gets in Your Eyes, which was a finalist in Poolbeg’s Write a Bestseller competition. As well as nine novels, I’ve written short stories for women’s magazines such as Take a Break and My Weekly. Before becoming a full-time writer, I worked as an administrative officer for the police.
When I’m not writing, I enjoy visiting big old houses, which I use as inspiration for the houses in my novels, and reading other people’s books when I ought to be writing my own…
Kat is married to Jack, but is sick and tired of feeling lonely. In an attempt to attract her husband’s attention again she flees to Raven’s cottage, taking Jack’s cat Mister Snuggles with her. She inherited Raven’s Cottage from her aunt and Kat quickly settles in, running the attached coffee shop and bookstore. Raven’s cottage was once the home of a witch named Magik Meg and the locals believe the cottage is still haunted by her. Ever since Kat arrived strange things keep happening. Is this the work of Magik Meg or is it someone else?
Kat has a very down-to-earth personality. She always looks for logical explanations first when something's going on. Kat had a terrible accident eight years ago and she never regained her memories about that frightful day. I couldn't wait to find out if she'd ever find out what happened. I also enjoyed reading about how she overcomes her fears, she’s so resourceful and smart. Plus she's talented in many ways, the cookies that Kat bakes made my mouth water and I would have loved it if I could visit her coffee shop and bookstore in real life.
Something Wicked is a story full of suspense and magic. I’ve always been fascinated by stories about witches and their magic. I loved it that Louise Marley tells the stories of both Kat and Meg. They go really well together and I loved their natural flow. Kat and Meg both have mysteries surrounding their lives and I was hooked from the start. Louise Marley knows how to write a magical story and definitely managed to enchant me.
Kat has inherited a cottage in Buckley. There's a coffee shop and a bookstore she can take over. The village thrives on the legend of Magik Meg, who was believed to be a witch. Kat's cottage is supposed to be haunted, but she doesn't really believe that it's Meg who's haunting her. Strange things keep happening and even though there must be a logical explanation for everything Kat doesn't know what it is yet. There's something she's supposed to remember, but her memory keeps playing tricks with her. Will someone be able to help her or does she have to figure it out on her own and is the cottage a safe place to be?
Something Wicked is a story about two strong women. Kat's new home is in Meg's old cottage. I loved it that Louise Marley told both of their stories. This is such a wonderful book. Who can these women trust? Something evil has happened, but what was it? I couldn't wait to find out. I liked this story a lot and read it in one sitting. It's very well written and the past has been cleverly combined and intertwined with the present. I highly recommend this novella, it's fabulous.
I really enjoyed this quick little book. Just the right thing for filling a gap. I did feel it probably could have been longer. But it was good and I recommend it
This sounded like an interesting read to me so decided to give it a try. Unfortunately it just really didn't work. I know it was a novella but there just wasn't enough character development and the story just didn't make sense. Despite being supposedly a spooky story there was no real tension and to be perfectly honest I didn't care what happened to the characters.
This is the first Louise Marley book I've read and it won't be my last. I was drawn by both the cover and the blurb. It was a great novella. I really enjoyed the mix of suspense and romance with several twists along the way.
Really enjoyed this tale...another great story from Louise Marley! I've read Nemesis and thoroughly enjoyed it so I knew I'd enjoy this. I found myself racing through this, completely caught up in the twists of the story. It made me smile, and I loved the characters...especially Jacob and Jake!
Louise Marley managed to pack a whole lot of story into this novella and I loved it. Lots of creepy happenings, witchy history and a gripping ending. I would highly recommend Something Wicked as a weekend read!
Good read. I wanted something a bit more spooky, but this was well written with good character development and description. I had a very clear picture of the Witch's Brew and would love to visit!
