Okay girlies, I have to give this 4 stars for me personally, BUT I think this is going to be a 5-star read for a lot of you.
I’m veeery picky about my dark romances, so I wasn’t 100% sure going into this one. I also thought this was a Why-Choose/Reverse Harem, because it says “masked men” as one of the tropes. FYI, this is an MF romance.
On the note of darkness, I also want to add that although there are very dark topics (human trafficking being the main one), I never felt like the topics were there just for shock value. I actually felt like the dark scenes were handled in a very sensitive way.
I also really want to express how much I love Sadie Kincaid’s writing style. I’m always able to completely immerse myself in her books, which I love.
My main critique is that the relationship was a lil icky for me for a good portion of the book. Our MMC buys the FMC from an auction. It’s to save her and he has good intentions, but it obviously still sets a power imbalance at the beginning of the relationship. In addition, he’s 42 and the FMC is 21. For a while, I was thinking that I wouldn’t be able to get on board with their relationship because of these two factors. Luckily, Sadie spends a good portion of the book addressing this imbalance and showing that the FMC really wanted this relationship, so I was able to get on board by the end.
So I don’t know why, but I assumed this was a stand-alone. Man oh man, was I wrong… that cliffhanger??? Might actually kill me. I just know I’m going to be thinking about this book for a long time and NOT patiently waiting for the next book to come out. I *NEED* it right. now.

I absolutely loved this 😭🔥 This is my first Sadie Kincaid book and it will officially be my mission in 2026 to work through her entire catalog. As a lifelong Belle girlie, the second I realized this had Beauty and the Beast vibes mixed with dark mafia romance, an angsty slow burn romance, thriller elements, damning secrets, and morally gray characters, I was SOLD 🖤🐺.
The tension builds so well, and by the end you can feel the story hitting its climax. I already know the reveals in book two are going to go absolutely insane 😮💨🔥 Everything is perfectly set up for chaos, and I cannot wait for the resolution.
What really got me though is how rare it is for me to genuinely like every character and fully believe the connections. Everyone has a past, everyone has a dark backstory, and everyone is actively healing while dealing with brutal circumstances 🖤🩸 Nothing felt forced. It all felt earned, messy, and real, which made me root for them even harder and hope they can navigate everything coming their way in book two..
That ending has me stressed, anxious, and feral because the cliffhanger is actually painful 😭📖 This drops April 14, 2025, and if you’re a dark romance mafia girlie like me, add this to your TBR immediately. New fave for sure 🖤🔥

I have very conflicted feelings about this book. While I enjoyed it, I definitely think this is one of those series where you need the full picture before you can truly fall in love with it.
Book one is very much the initial setup for the storyline, so the plot doesn’t move as quickly as I would have liked. It lays the groundwork, builds the characters, and establishes the world, but because of that, it feels slower. And the ending? A cliffhanger that had me wanting to shake both the FMC and MMC because it absolutely felt avoidable. 😅
That being said, I have no doubt that once the next book releases, I’ll be more invested. This feels like the calm before the storm, and I’m hoping book two is where everything really takes off.
The audio narration was beautifully done by Grayson Owens and June DeBorahe. They both brought depth and emotion to the characters, and I truly enjoyed the listening experience. If you’re an audiobook girly, this book is well narrated.
For now, I’m on the fence , but I’m definitely curious enough to continue. I hope you all immediately feel connected to the storyline and love it more than I did this round.

I knew this would be a fun read based on the title and the author.
This book was so easy to get into and it kept my attention. I wanted to keep reading to find out how it would all play out.

The title sums it up. Yep, human auction!! When you put rich, powerful, vile men in a room, they prove they are disgusting pigs.
Except Lincoln, I like him. A recluse billionaire, scarred, badass with trauma. It's one of my favorite types of MMCs.
We're just going to call him our hero because let's face it, he saved Imogen (well.... he did purchase her, but for good reasons).
Feelings start to develop and let's just say the spice is spicing between Imogen and Lincoln. Like hooooot 🔥
She had a shitty upbringing and was actually finding herself comfortable and happy until she started discovering secrets.
Imogen unknowingly shares a lot of past trauma with Lincoln but doesn't know the extent of it.
I feel like they both were unsure how to handle it all, and therefore, the conversation never came up. I was dying for Lincoln to spill the truth.
When Imgoen found the spare key, I was begging her not to do it.
Don't get me started on her grandfather and Larissa. I had my suspicions about them from the very beginning.
THAT ENDING! A cliffhanger 😭 The threat from him. I hate how things ended and I'm going to need the second book.

I love Sadie Kincaid! I've been binge reading tons of her books recently. This one started and progressed a little slowly, but with that ending, I realize it was all building up to an epic crescendo. I can't wait to read the next book in this series. I know the yearning is going to double, and the hatred is going to triple. From forbidden lovers to even MORE forbidden lovers. The angst and unwanted lust... Yes!
The narration was done flawlessly. I haven't listened to any books read by these performers, but I definitely plan to in the future!
One more thing, this cover is stunning. 😍😍

My poor baby Imogen 😭 Girl has been through so much.
The Auction delivers us a surprisingly dark, smutty, slow burn Beauty and the Beast retelling.
I'm definitely no stranger to the many Beauty and the Beast retellings out there, but this one in particular seemed to stand out to me!
Imogen, our FMC, was purchased in auction by a dark, reclusive billionaire. She was trained, molded into being a perfect doll, a submissive for whoever happened to purchase her. Poor thing was so naive to everything that went on in the outside world. I felt so heartbroken for her.
The man who purchased her? Our morally grey MMC, Lincoln.
A man who wears a mask, and feels intense guilt for his feelings towards Imogen. I felt that his character was so complex.
The both of them obviously had secrets to keep from eachother, which created a lot of suspense and struggle between them. I loved reading about Imogen finally starting to open up, find her identity, and bloom, especially in Lincoln's presence.
This book did start off a lot darker than I was expecting! But by the end of the book I was basically on my knees, begging for the next one. And the cliffhanger? EVIL. Sadie, please give us the next one 😭😭
Towards the middle of the book, I did feel the pacing started to slow down. But aside from that I found this one to be a hit!

Does the plot flow? Yes. It is a tense, fiery slow-burn that balances the mystery of a secret society with the suspense of a captive situation. The transition from the auction stage to Lincoln’s reclusive mansion really builds the tension.
Relatable characters? Compellingly & flawed & additive. I loved hearing their stories and seeing their growth together.
Did it leave you with a book hangover? Absolutely. Between the intense chemistry, the secrets behind Lincoln's mask, and that ending!!

I have no words for how powerful and emotional this story is. It tugs at some deep parts of your brain.
I think my favorite part was the play on right and wrong when dealing with such an emotional situation. I felt so many emotions and grappling with my own thoughts about her situation. But when you feel safe with someone it changes everything.
I loved getting both characters POV and how they were dealing with such huge emotions when it came down to everything between them.
This isn't a light read at all. And I loved every page.
This was my first Sadie Kincaid and while dark, her characters were extremely likable. The connection between them entirely believable. I also liked that the female character was a little older. I think it would have came across differently if she had been younger. I can understand this wouldn't be for everyone. I am not a huge spice reader and this has plenty of spice, but I still enjoyed it to the max. I went in prepared, knowing it would be heavy on the spice. I still loved it because the plot was the main focus and incredible.
The healing on page was incredible too. I am super excited about book 2 and can't wait to see what happens next after that cliffhanger.

That said… let’s talk about this book, because it got me — just not all the way. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ (4/5)
𓆙.𖥔 ݁ ˖ The Premise & Atmosphere
The Auction opens with a premise that is dark, disturbing, and immediately gripping. Imogen has never had agency over her life — trained from childhood to be “pure,” isolated from the world, and groomed to be sold as penance for her parents’ alleged treacherous crimes. When she’s auctioned off at twenty-one to the highest bidder, the buyer is none other than the masked, reclusive billionaire Lincoln Knight, who drops $10 million to claim her.
From the start, the book leans hard into gothic vibes:
powerful criminal secret society, isolated mansion in the woods, secrets layered on secrets, a masked man with a scarred past, and a heroine who doesn’t know what’s real — or who to trust.
While the setup initially gave me very familiar vibes (borderline Wattpad déjà vu), around the 20% mark the story finds its footing and starts to feel like its own thing rather than a remix of tropes I’ve seen before.
⋆˚✿˖° Imogen
Imogen is a complicated FMC to read — intentionally so. She’s naïve, conditioned, traumatized, and deeply submissive in ways that aren’t just personality traits, but survival mechanisms. Her worldview is warped by the teachings of her Grandfather and Larissa (who is basically the woman who raised her), and that informs every interaction she has.
What I appreciated most is that the book doesn’t pretend she’s suddenly empowered the moment she leaves captivity. Her confusion, fear, and longing for approval feel authentic. At the same time, I wanted more from her emotional journey — more internal reckoning, more questioning, more unlearning. The foundation is there, but it doesn’t fully get explored yet.
🏰₊˚⊹♡ Lincoln Knight
Lincoln Knight is marketed as a monster — a dangerous, morally grey recluse hiding behind a mask. And while he is mysterious, traumatized, and undeniably intense, I struggled a bit with his execution.
His reason for buying Imogen is rooted in protection rather than possession, which I appreciated. He feeds her real food, gives her choices, shows her kindness — and yes, the man has a deliciously sinful mouth and the spice absolutely hits.
But emotionally? He often felt underdeveloped outside of sexual tension.
Once their relationship turns physical, it starts to feel like that’s where most of his effort goes. Given Imogen’s upbringing — where affection and worth were tied to obedience and sex — I really wanted to see Lincoln put more intention into teaching her how to exist outside of that. How to want, how to choose, how to love herself.
He almost gets there. Almost.

Pierre was hands down my favorite character.
A former surgeon blinded by the Brotherhood after saving someone deemed “unworthy,” Pierre lives with Lincoln in his remote home and serves as a grounding presence in the story. His grief, loyalty, and quiet moral clarity added so much emotional depth.
He stole the show for me — which is wild, considering there are really only 3-5 main characters. Every scene with Pierre felt so loving, and I cared deeply about him.

Lincoln is dominant, attentive, and filthy in the best way. Their chemistry is intense, and the sexual tension is undeniably well-written. I appreciated how Lincoln teaches Imogen certain acts and sensations — though that ties back into my main critique: I wanted more balance between sexual awakening and emotional growth.

Lincoln isn’t cursed for being cruel. He’s traumatized by the Brotherhood and their human trafficking, secretive, and hiding — not morally bankrupt. His isolation is protection and control, not punishment. This story is about uncovering truths and reframing actions, not about a man learning how to be human.
Scarred man + mansion ≠ Beauty and the Beast.
This is a marketing gripe more than a story flaw, but it stood out to me.

It does end on an unexpected cliffhanger that had me crying, screaming, throwing up. I didn't even realize how emotionally invested I was in the book until it ended and I was ready to riot.

The Auction opens with a premise that is dark, disturbing, and immediately gripping. Imogen has never had agency over her life — trained from childhood to be “pure,” isolated from the world, and groomed to be sold as penance for her parents’ alleged treacherous crimes. When she’s auctioned off at twenty-one to the highest bidder, the buyer is none other than the masked, reclusive billionaire Lincoln Knight, who drops $10 million to claim her.
From the start, the book leans hard into gothic vibes:
powerful criminal secret society, isolated mansion in the woods, secrets layered on secrets, a masked man with a scarred past, and a heroine who doesn’t know what’s real — or who to trust.
While the setup initially gave me very familiar vibes (borderline Wattpad déjà vu), around the 20% mark the story finds its footing and starts to feel like its own thing rather than a remix of tropes I’ve seen before.
⋆˚✿˖° Imogen
Imogen is a complicated FMC to read — intentionally so. She’s naïve, conditioned, traumatized, and deeply submissive in ways that aren’t just personality traits, but survival mechanisms. Her worldview is warped by the teachings of her Grandfather and Larissa (who is basically the woman who raised her), and that informs every interaction she has.
What I appreciated most is that the book doesn’t pretend she’s suddenly empowered the moment she leaves captivity. Her confusion, fear, and longing for approval feel authentic. At the same time, I wanted more from her emotional journey — more internal reckoning, more questioning, more unlearning. The foundation is there, but it doesn’t fully get explored yet.
🏰₊˚⊹♡ Lincoln Knight
Lincoln Knight is marketed as a monster — a dangerous, morally grey recluse hiding behind a mask. And while he is mysterious, traumatized, and undeniably intense, I struggled a bit with his execution.
His reason for buying Imogen is rooted in protection rather than possession, which I appreciated. He feeds her real food, gives her choices, shows her kindness — and yes, the man has a deliciously sinful mouth and the spice absolutely hits.
But emotionally? He often felt underdeveloped outside of sexual tension.
Once their relationship turns physical, it starts to feel like that’s where most of his effort goes. Given Imogen’s upbringing — where affection and worth were tied to obedience and sex — I really wanted to see Lincoln put more intention into teaching her how to exist outside of that. How to want, how to choose, how to love herself.
He almost gets there. Almost.
𓍢ִ໋☕️✧˚ ༘ ⋆ Pierre (my MVP)
Pierre was hands down my favorite character.
A former surgeon blinded by the Brotherhood after saving someone deemed “unworthy,” Pierre lives with Lincoln in his remote home and serves as a grounding presence in the story. His grief, loyalty, and quiet moral clarity added so much emotional depth.
He stole the show for me — which is wild, considering there are really only 3-5 main characters. Every scene with Pierre felt so loving, and I cared deeply about him.

Lincoln is dominant, attentive, and filthy in the best way. Their chemistry is intense, and the sexual tension is undeniably well-written. Imogen and Lincoln’s slow burning relationship was absolutely beautiful and utterly raw and emotional.
Not going to lie I was unsure this book was going to hit the right spot and it 💯 did.
The close knit relationship Imogen and Pierre formed was life changing in my eyes. He was literally the best friend/father figure a girl could ask for. Pure perfection.
I loved all of the small gestures Lincoln made for Imogen were amazing. I can’t stop gushing over Lincoln. So extra points for that.
The ending was actually mind blowing and I’m still unsure how to wrap my head around that one.

Make sure you read the trigger warnings for the type of content that's included. Personally I loved it all! There wasn't any part of the spice that I didn't like!
The MCs are well written and there's a twist in the 3rd act that changes things before the cliffhanger. I'm really sad that I can't keep reading the next book! I need to know what happens to Killian and Imogen!

But when she finds the truth, her sense of betrayal leads her to make a choice that causes chaos and leaves everyone reeling. Will Lincoln - ******* - be able to rescue her again? Or, as she fears, will it be vengeance he wants on her?
I adored the character of Pierre - Imogen's first ally when she swaps the prison with her Grandfather to the prison with Lincoln. He is kind to her, despite the reveal of what he has been through, and shows her that not all men are cruel. His French origins are very reminiscent of Lumiere in the Disney film, and I absolutely loved that - the comparisons of fairytale romance set against a supremely dark backdrop of mafia, vengeance and slave auctions.
What I loved about the unfolding love story was that it was deliciously messy. It never felt forced or like it was fated - both characters had their hang ups and points where it looked like nothing could happen. It felt organic and chaotic, but perfectly right.
Honestly, the cliffhanger The Auction finishes on is BRUTAL. Sadie, you may have broken me this time! The thought of waiting for 9 months not knowing what happens next is shredding my insides! I am desperate for the Beast to rescue his Beauty - and terrified for Imogen and about what she may go through whilst she waits. But can they repair what has been fractured, even if he rescues her? It's going to be total torment waiting for The Game.

Let me start this off by saying, idk WHY I was under the assumption that this was a standalone, but IT IS NOT! That cliffhanger has me EFFED UP (in a positive way don’t get it twisted) and I’m going to be waiting very impatiently for the next book bc WHAT JUST HAPPENED???!!?!!!
🎧 i love myself a duet narration and these two actors really made me feel like I was immersed in this story. They put so much thought and emotion into these characters and I think they really made this incredible story so much fun to read. They were clear, concise, and and put feeling into each and every word.
📚 now this story... I was nervous going in with it being quite literally an auction for young ladies, but Sadie does an amazing job at handling this with care and not romanticizing the horrors of human trafficking.
Imogen has been prepared her whole life for The Brotherhood's "auction" and the horrors that come after it. When Imogen is sold to a mysterious man who is rumored to be a monster, she is taken to his secluded house, hidden away from the world. Once she's there, she finds out that things aren't what she was taught and her life takes a turn she never would have expected...
This story was absolutely wild and I was on the edge of my seat up to the end just waiting to see how things would end. Within the romance, there is a 20 year age gap (21/42), and a tension-filled slow burn. And while some aspects of the romance felt genuinely icky, I feel as though that was intended, and Imogen's advocacy for herself and her decisions throughout the story really balanced that. I truly loved seeing the change in character and how much both Imogen and Lincoln grow as people in this book. Meanwhile, the tension and yearning were DEFINITELY felt heavyyyyy in this one and I was a giggling, gasping mess during some scenes!
As for the actual storyline, I was wondering what the point of being secluded was and how things would progress for most of the story. I found it very interesting what Lincoln was doing for "work" and how that tied into the past and present-day conflicts. I do wish there was a bit more, but I'll just assume book 2 will answer all my questions!
I honestly thought this was a standalone, one book deal, but it was not... HEED MY WARNING! This book leaves off on the largest cliffhanger, and I was sat contemplating life for a solid hour after finishing because I was so in shock. I cannot wait to see where this book goes from here and I wish I had it now so this empty feeling inside me could go away :D

Excuse me?! No one prepared me for that ending, what a cliffhanger. I will just remain in a state of unwell until book 2 arrives.

no one told me this wasn't going to be a standalone. the ending was so intense, i could not put it down. i was tapping through my kindle pages so quickly, needing to know what was going to happen next, until i got to—the announcement for the next book. which i now need immediately!
the auction was so excellent—both as a dark organized crime romance, but also as a beauty and the beast retelling. i will absolutely eat up any beauty and the beast story, and i felt like both roles fit imogen and lincoln so naturally. lincoln, who is scarred, inside and out, from a horrific past; and imogen, just as equally tortured and with her own past pains, but kept beautiful as a pawn in a plan that she is only just beginning to understand.
the book opens right at the scene of the eponymous auction; the one imogen has been prepared for all her life. the one where she will be sold to the highest bidder and expected to suffer through any manner of horrors after. but instead of being sold to some depraved, vile man, as she expects, she's sold to lincoln. this book is dark—in its descriptions, in its details of just what the organized crime group, the brotherhood, does, but also in what lincoln, the mmc does, to them in the name of retribution and revenge.
however, what quickly endeared lincoln to me was how gentle and thoughtful he was with imogen—always. i loved how this book was told in alternating povs, because in the chapters with his perspective, we get a better sense of his guilt—over their age gap, over their past, over the fact that he boughther—and his undeniable need to do right by her, even as he keeps his own secrets. while he is still a morally grey hero, in terms of the romance, he was always considerate, kind, and so, so good to her. i'm a sucker for the "he hates everyone but her" trope, and the auction gave me "he's a monster to everyone but her" in delicious, wonderful spades.
and imogen struck just the right balance between being, understandably, naive and sheltered and inexperienced, but also being courageous and curious as she comes into her own. her perspectives definitely grew more compelling the more she started to open up. yet even right from the start, she possessed an internal strength and dogged determination to never let anyone break her that was so admirable. although at times, i wish there had been more action from her, the final act of this book made up for all of it.
and what a final act it was. the plot moves slowly with only slight bursts of action in between imogen and lincoln's time hidden away in his mansion, but the tension and build-up is no less potent for the unhurried pace of it. throughout the book, there are hints that what is being told is not the full truth, and the sense that an ultimate reckoning is on the horizon.
i really enjoyed how imogen and lincoln's feelings and love played a role in heightening the story; how it became intertwined with the plot and how it made everything so messy, but also so desperate for them. their connection was magnetic—and not just the off-the-charts spice that we get plenty of, but their emotional bond as well. when it's just the two of them, away from the chaos of their pasts and the dangers of the present, they are just two lonely people seeking solace in one another.
i absolutely can't wait for the next book—which i still feel betrayed by the existence of!—and after the way everything left off at the end of the auction, the game cannot come soon enough. i will be waiting eagerly to see imogen and lincoln, hopefully, get the ending that they deserve!

the book opens right at the scene of the eponymous auction; the one imogen has been prepared for all her life. the one where she will be sold to the highest bidder and expected to suffer through any manner of horrors after. but instead of being sold to some depraved, vile man, as she expects, she's sold to lincoln. this book is dark—in its descriptions, in its details of just what the organized crime group, the brotherhood, does, but also in what lincoln, the mmc does, to them in the name of retribution and revenge.
however, what quickly endeared lincoln to me was how gentle and thoughtful he was with imogen—always. i loved how this book was told in alternating povs, because in the chapters with his perspective, we get a better sense of his guilt—over their age gap, over their past, over the fact that he boughther—and his undeniable need to do right by her, even as he keeps his own secrets. while he is still a morally grey hero, in terms of the romance, he was always considerate, kind, and so, so good to her. i'm a sucker for the "he hates everyone but her" trope, and the auction gave me "he's a monster to everyone but her" in delicious, wonderful spades.
and imogen struck just the right balance between being, understandably, naive and sheltered and inexperienced, but also being courageous and curious as she comes into her own. her perspectives definitely grew more compelling the more she started to open up. yet even right from the start, she possessed an internal strength and dogged determination to never let anyone break her that was so admirable. although at times, i wish there had been more action from her, the final act of this book made up for all of it.
and what a final act it was. the plot moves slowly with only slight bursts of action in between imogen and lincoln's time hidden away in his mansion, but the tension and build-up is no less potent for the unhurried pace of it. throughout the book, there are hints that what is being told is not the full truth, and the sense that an ultimate reckoning is on the horizon.
i really enjoyed how imogen and lincoln's feelings and love played a role in heightening the story; how it became intertwined with the plot and how it made everything so messy, but also so desperate for them. their connection was magnetic—and not just the off-the-charts spice that we get plenty of, but their emotional bond as well. when it's just the two of them, away from the chaos of their pasts and the dangers of the present, they are just two lonely people seeking solace in one another.
i absolutely can't wait for the next book—which i still feel betrayed by the existence of!—and after the way everything left off at the end of the auction, the game cannot come soon enough. i will be waiting eagerly to see imogen and lincoln, hopefully, get the ending that they deserve!

This actually pains me to write because I love Sadie's books so much, but this fell completely flat for me. There were so many gaps in this story it couldn't help but be so confused by it all.
Firstly, Imogen. Imogen is a 21 year old girl who was raised by her grandfather and 'partner' since she was was 3. When she turned 21 she was put into an auction to be purchased by the most sickest and twisted of men. *PAUSE! - FIRST GAP*. We basically know nothing of Imogen prior to her turning 21 other than the fact she was so isolated from the world to the point she didn't know what bluetooth was and had never listened to music, and she basically wasn't allowed sugar or to use tampons. Her grandfather was very wealthy, and there was no mention of Imogen growing up in an abusive household so I didn't understand why she couldn't go out and enjoy her years before knowing she was to be sold at 21? Imogen felt like she had a great upbringing, particularly from her grandfathers 'partner' who apparently taught her all she knows (which I can't say is a lot), it grated on me how much of a child she acted like when she's supposed to be a grown woman.
Secondly, Lincoln. Lincoln used to be apart of a group called The Brotherhood which is an organisation of sex trafficking women and selling them in auctions. He ended up leaving and set out to protect Imogen after her father (his best friend) died, so he purchases her from an auction. Oh did I forget to mention he's her godfather? Yeah we'll get to that. Until the last 85%, Imogen has 0 clue on who Lincoln is to her, only that he is a monster in The Brotherhood world. Granted he is, considering he spent 70% of the book telling himself that he is even after defiling Imogen and falling in love with her, but what I don't understand is he wasn't even there to fall in love!!!
For a whole 95% of the book, Imogen was confined to Lincoln's house where all she did was go to the library, the kitchen, and the garden. At one point I was getting SO SICK of how many of the same scenes happened in that bloody kitchen - stop asking her what the damn girl wants for breakfast!!! The guy also owns acres of land and never thought to take her for a walk on it? Crazy. Lincoln, on the other hand, spent practically all of his time outside the house rescuing other girls from men of The Brotherhood so when it came to them suddenly realising that they loved each other and felt so strongly where they were at it like rabbits for the last 40%, left me confused to all hell!! Imogen had more of a bond and a relationship with the freakin' butler in the house for christ sake - I just didn't buy Lincoln and Imogen's connection at all, there were no grounds for it to even develop so that's gap number two.
Listen, I don't mind a non-related, age-gap, family dynamic you know, but when it constantly involves the reminder of him being her godfather, knowing her when she was a baby, and watching her grow up, KILLS the mood. I don't agree with him keeping that secret from her for the entire story, it was giving predator and it didn't sit well with me. If they loved each other as much as they say they did, then she would've stuck around and forgiven him, but it got weirder and weirder her not knowing.
I feel like this had SO MUCH POTENTIAL, but it just didn't go anywhere at all and I'm so disappointed given how much Sadie's books are some of my all time favourites, but unfortunately not this one.

So, I’ve somehow unbeknownst to me when I picked this up, just read my first godfather x goddaughter romance, and I feel like this would be a great time to go and pray, for the person I was before reading this because I miss that version of myself lol.
All jokes asides, though, this was fucking insane. I do love a good beauty and the beast retelling and this was loosely inspired by the story, with Lincoln’s scars and wearing a mask and Imogen’s innocence and naivety, due to her sheltered upbringing. This is dark, too, and despite there were moments where I did feel unsettled, and unsure with where it was going, I still found it incredibly compelling and enjoyable.
This is my first book I’ve read by Sadie Kincaid and, well asides, from not really knowing where this was going until more than halfway, I know that I quite literally couldn’t put this down, holding my breath in anticipation and had to force myself to put this down at 1am last night, and that cliffhanger at the end was pure insanity. And the hidden identity reveal about Lincoln, too, like it was really sweet how he cared about Imogen, and then it all made sense why he did, despite the depravity and I couldn’t help but root for them.
Human trafficking is a particularly difficult topic to read about, and this book does not shy away from how dark and disturbing it is. The organisation that Lincoln is trying to dismantle is absolutely depraved, and you know, I can’t ignore him also lusting after his goddaughter, too, I’m gonna need to take some time to get my head around that one haha. The spice was spicy, until I realised who he was!
The Brotherhood have pinned him for the murders of Imogen’s parents, and so rightly so, he’s spent the last eighteen years exacting his revenge. While also trying and failing to fight his attraction to Imogen who has lived a sheltered life up until the day of her auction. Her grandfather and the woman who cared for her are just as depraved, as I’m sure they had something to do with Imogen’s parents death, and with how this ended, I believe we’re set to see just how awful they are towards Imogen.
Anywhoo, Harper Collins, what does a girl have to do to kindly get an ARC of The Game, pretty please when it becomes available because I absolutely need to see how this ends, and I’d be a liar if I said that I wasn’t rooting for Imogen and Lincoln!

This story opens with an incredibly ominous first chapter that sets a perfect Gothic tone. While there are clear nods to Beauty and the Beast—the isolated forest estate, a vast library, and the heavy red curtains—it feels more like a dark inspiration than a standard retelling.
What Worked:
* The Atmosphere: The setting is lush and moody, and the "monster" trope is handled well; Lincoln’s scars are distinct from his moral character.
* The Standout: Pierre is a fantastic addition to the cast. He acts as the voice of reason and provides a paternal warmth to Imogen that balances the tension in the house.
* The Strategy: While the pacing drags slightly in the third act, the payoff is excellent. You realize a game of chess has been played the entire time, leaving me eager for the next book.

Typically I would not think of a dark Mafia romance as having world building but this book felt like a lot of set up for what is to come in this universe. There are some really tough moments to read with the auction and some of the women that Lincoln rescues but the authors approaches them in a very careful way and not to use out of shock value. I will say I had trouble settling in and being comfortable with the romance between Lincoln and Imogen due to him buying her, him not ever communicating why he bought her and their large age gap. I loved Imogens friendship with Pierre and seeing her being able to explore and learn about life now that she has some freedoms. Overall I enjoyed the book and am looking forward to book two.

This book is going to sit with me for a long time, one I will think about & talk about for years to come. The tension, the build up, the reveals are absolutely perfection. If you are a spice reader, you’ll enjoy this one. There was a few times I was reading while also trying to look away because this is absolutely the filthiest book I’ve ever read.
The giant cliffhanger of an ending is insane, my heart was beating so loud I’m pretty sure the neighbors could hear it. I did not realize this was going to be more than one book so when I got to the ending, going to the next chapter that wasn’t there had me absolutely spiraling.
Book 2 is set up so nicely that I just know this series will stick with me for a long time.

I was so excited to get approved for this ARC and I cannot wait until release to get my gorgeous physical copy as a trophy for my shelves!
Talk about being hooked from the beginning of the story! We just jumped right in! I loved the way the relationship developed throughout the story and I felt like I knew what was going to happen but THAT ENDING….MIND BLOWING & NEVER would have guessed it. I’m so mad that we have to wait not only in this book to release but then on the next. I need it now!!!! In the end I want my happily ever after but I truly don’t know if we will get that with everything that happened.

I want to start this review by saying, I loved Pierre. He was my favorite character. Okay, on the real review.
The Auction was a dark romance that isn't really an original idea but it is executed really well. The blend of mafia romance with tones of beauty and the beast really was just fun to read. I devoured this book. The spice was written really well. Imogen and Lincoln had very good chemistry and I liked how he helped her come out of her shell. But that ending did some things to me and made me question how I felt about things. Crazy last 20% and the cliffhanger was wild.

Oh. My. Heart. The Auction is exactly the kind of book that devours you from page one and doesn’t let go — I was absolutely hooked. Sadie Kincaid blends dark romance, gothic vibes, and a Beauty & the Beast–style slow burn into something that feels both classic and utterly fresh.
From the very first chapter, you’re thrown into the heart-stopping world of Imogen — a heroine raised to fear the auction that will decide her fate — and Lincoln Knight, the masked, mysterious man who changes everything. Their chemistry is electric and rooted in genuine emotion, not just spice (though there’s plenty of that too!)
What I loved most was how layered this story feels. Imogen grows from someone shaped by fear into someone discovering her own strength, and Lincoln — scarred, secretive, morally grey — becomes so much more than he first appears. Their connection is messy, tense, deeply emotional, and so believable.

First of all, for me it was obvious who the King was from the beginning of this book. I did however liked Lincoln a lot, his mission to destroy the Brotherhood and everyone in it was the reason why I kept on reading.
The cliffhanger at the end of the book was really predictable and not of my liking but I will read the second book when it comes out.

Imogen is such a sweetheart. Incredibly sheltered and forced to lock all parts of her away, I felt incredibly bad for her when we’re first introduced. But getting to watch her explore new things, new interests and even new parts of herself? I could have cried with happiness for her. So many times, I wanted to reach in and wrap her up in the tightest hug. It just goes to show what years of brainwashing can do to someone. After the end of the book, I really hope she continues to grow onwards and upwards!
Lincoln seems so cold, so aloof and so deadly and he definitely prefers it that way. Watching him take care of Imogen really helped show his humanity. Very easily, he could have let all the events of his past drive him to insanity. Instead, he became proactive and rose to the top where he’s practically untouchable. I do feel he needs to work on his emotions… At times he felt a little juvenile considering he’s in his forties. But it was great watching him open up and mellow out over the course of the book. In the sequel, I have no idea which side of Lincoln we will see but I am excited for it!
I’ve previously read a couple of Kincaid’s books and just been absolutely obsessed. So, there was no doubt in my mind that this book would be the same. And good lord was I sucked in - I could scarcely put the book down! What a story this is. I love that it borders on something incredibly dark considering the content matter, and it is done incredibly well. We experience a whole plethora of emotions both from the characters’ experiences but also from the content as well. Nothing felt like it was too much - too sinister, too violent, too gory. And whilst the cast is incredibly small, majority of the story limited to three people, it didn’t feel too slow or boring at any point. I think it helped heighten both the emotions and the stakes by keeping things centred on them and having the occasional other person drop in. Of course, keeping things restricted meant we could spend more time exploring the attraction and longing and explosive tension between Lincoln and Imogen. And wow is it explosive. With the smut, what I really enjoyed was the fact that everything was done with care and also consideration. Yes, the characters lose their inhibitions and go wild but there is still that element of remaining grounded and conscious of how things are impacting each other. In other words, it was bloody hot! Oh my god that ending had my jaw dropping to the floor! That was such a cruel way to end it - especially with that cliffhanger! And I have to wait 9 months until the sequel?!?!
Overall, The Auction is another stunner of a book to add to Kincaid’s catalogue.

Imogen is such a sweetheart. Incredibly sheltered and forced to lock all parts of her away, I felt incredibly bad for her when we’re first introduced. But getting to watch her explore new things, new interests and even new parts of herself? I could have cried with happiness for her. So many times, I wanted to reach in and wrap her up in the tightest hug. It just goes to show what years of brainwashing can do to someone. After the end of the book, I really hope she continues to grow onwards and upwards!
Lincoln seems so cold, so aloof and so deadly and he definitely prefers it that way. Watching him take care of Imogen really helped show his humanity. Very easily, he could have let all the events of his past drive him to insanity. Instead, he became proactive and rose to the top where he’s practically untouchable. I do feel he needs to work on his emotions… At times he felt a little juvenile considering he’s in his forties. But it was great watching him open up and mellow out over the course of the book. In the sequel, I have no idea which side of Lincoln we will see but I am excited for it!
I’ve previously read a couple of Kincaid’s books and just been absolutely obsessed. So, there was no doubt in my mind that this book would be the same. And good lord was I sucked in - I could scarcely put the book down! What a story this is. I love that it borders on something incredibly dark considering the content matter, and it is done incredibly well. We experience a whole plethora of emotions both from the characters’ experiences but also from the content as well. Nothing felt like it was too much - too sinister, too violent, too gory. And whilst the cast is incredibly small, majority of the story limited to three people, it didn’t feel too slow or boring at any point. I think it helped heighten both the emotions and the stakes by keeping things centred on them and having the occasional other person drop in. Of course, keeping things restricted meant we could spend more time exploring the attraction and longing and explosive tension between Lincoln and Imogen. And wow is it explosive. With the smut, what I really enjoyed was the fact that everything was done with care and also consideration. Yes, the characters lose their inhibitions and go wild but there is still that element of remaining grounded and conscious of how things are impacting each other. In other words, it was bloody hot! Oh my god that ending had my jaw dropping to the floor! That was such a cruel way to end it - especially with that cliffhanger! And I have to wait 9 months until the sequel?!?!
Overall, The Auction is another stunner of a book to add to Kincaid’s catalogue.

I went into The Auction expecting something akin to the dark intensity of 24690 by A.A. Dark, but it eventually morphed into something closer to Master of Salt and Bones by Keri Lake. While I anticipated a female lead who was brutally traumatized, Imogen felt more like an isolated, naive princess—someone mistreated and occasionally abused by her grandfather, but not quite the "shattered" character the premise suggested.
The Plot (or Lack Thereof)
To be honest, I spent a good portion of this book asking myself what the actual plot was. If you are looking for a story driven by high-stakes action or deep lore regarding the auction itself, you might find it thin. However, if you love hot, spontaneous, and passionate "spice" with minimal plot interruptions, this book is for you.
What Worked (and What Didn’t)
• The Spice: This book is incredibly high-heat. About 75% of the story is dedicated to the relationship and the physical chemistry between the leads.
• The Dialogue: There is a lot of talking, though it doesn't always lead to many answers regarding the mystery of the Auction.
• The Dynamic: There is a significant age gap here. While Imogen is 21, I found her calling Lincoln "Sir" to be pretty cringy. It didn't feel like he was acting like he "owned" her or that they had the kind of intense power-play relationship that would make that title feel natural.
• Missed Opportunities: I would have loved to see more of the actual Auction—specifically more tension or a traumatic event there to ground the story. Instead, the non-romantic plot felt a bit scattered between Pierre, Lincoln, and the "game."
Final Thoughts
While this wasn't exactly what I was looking for, I recognize that it will be a "holy grail" book for readers who prioritize relationship heat and spicy scenes over a complex plot. Therefore I’m upgrading the rating from 3.5 to 4 stars. I’m not sure I’ll continue the series, but for the right reader, this is a total win. Preorder your copy now, releasing April 14 2026!

Part Mafia romance and part spicy Beauty and the Beast retelling, I was intrigued by the premise of this book. Sadie Kincaid is actually the author that introduced me to the world of dark, Mafia romance with the Chicago Ruthless series, so I was excited to get an early peek at her newest series. Imogen is auctioned off to mysterious billionaire recluse Lincoln and this book follows their slow-burn romance and Lincoln’s covert quest for vigilante justice. Not too long, I think this book was the perfect length and a solid start to her latest series. The narrators were great and perfect for the characters.
What worked: the overall storyline and the backstories of both of their characters. The spice was well-written in typical Sadie Kincaid fashion. Overall I actually was interested in the story, but as a dark romance girlie I will warn you to CHECK YOUR TRIGGERS before going into this book. This is a story partially about a large human trafficking ring, and with everything going on in the world the plot felt a lot more uncomfortable than it had in the past. Not as intense as something like Haunting/Hunting Adeline, but the story has some dark elements that may be tough for sensitive readers. I also don’t mind an age-gap trope in my books, but THIS age gap gave me the ICK in some places (especially as he is ‘teaching’ her about her body), and that is really the reason I didn’t rate this book higher. Lincoln at times did feel like a creepy old man and it diluted a lot of the ‘romance’ in the story, in my opinion. That being said, it ends on a cliffhanger and I’m interested to see what happens next in this series.
