Thank you to the author and NetGalley for a DRC of this independantly published title, in return for an honest review.

14 Years a Prisoner by Léo Maruin (a pseudonym) is a harrowing but worthwhile read, offering a stark, unflinching look at life inside Thailand’s prison system. Convicted of counterfeiting, Maruin charts his experience with a measured, reflective tone that avoids sensationalism while still conveying the relentless physical and psychological toll of long-term incarceration, including time spent in the infamous 'Bangkok Hilton' - Klong Prem Central Prison.

In tone, it echoes Brittney Griner’s memoir Coming Home, particularly in its portrayal of confinement, loss of control and the struggle to endure an unfamiliar and unforgiving system. However, the contrast is striking - where Griner’s case unfolded under intense global scrutiny, Maruin’s experience is that of an ordinary individual navigating the same kind of isolation without visibility or external support.

What stands out is the focus on endurance rather than drama - the slow erosion of time, identity and autonomy becomes more impactful than any single event. The writing is clear and engaging, drawing the reader into the routines and realities of prison life without embellishment.

The inclusion of photographs at the end adds an extra layer of impact, grounding the narrative in something tangible and leaving a lasting impression. It also serves as a stark warning to visitors to Thailand: consciously choosing to flout the country’s laws can carry consequences far beyond what many might expect. A difficult read at times, but one that feels important and ultimately rewarding.

14 Years a Prisoner tells a very interesting and, at its core, powerful story. The premise and the life experiences described have the potential to be gripping, emotional, and thought-provoking. Unfortunately, the execution seriously undermines what could have been a strong book.

Throughout the book, events and passages are repeated multiple times, often with only very small changes between versions. This creates a strong impression that large parts of the text may have been generated using AI rather than being carefully written and edited by the author. Instead of reinforcing the narrative, these repetitions become distracting and frustrating, breaking immersion and making the reading experience feel careless and unprofessional.

What makes this especially disappointing is that the underlying story is genuinely compelling. With proper editing and structure, this could have been a memorable and impactful book. Instead, the lack of thorough proofreading and editorial oversight suggests that neither the author nor the publisher has read the book carefully from start to finish.

For that reason, despite the interesting story at its foundation, I cannot recommend this book. If the people behind it did not take the time to properly review and refine it, I do not believe readers should invest their time either.

thoughtful, enlightening read

As a volunteer in Bangkok, I used to write to and visit inmates. It has been totally enlightening to see what was going on behind the visitors glass and understand some of the thought processes of what it was like to actually live there. It helps you to appreciate everything you have around you, and it also makes you fear for the mistakes that you see your teenage grandchildren making. And how easily it could happen to someone you love. I admire the courage and strength of Leo and others who managed to make the right choices, and get to live life again. It is good for all of us to stop and think and appreciate everything we have. Even the bad times.

This book is one of my favourites in a while! Leo’s strength and perseverance are what got him through this. I’m truly sorry he and his friends went through this. But their determination got them through it.
Great read id recommend this to everyone. Bravo Leo!👏🏻

This was such a raw, emotional, and deeply personal read. Leo shares an incredible true story that pulls you right into the heart of what life inside prisons around the world can really look like. It’s not sugar-coated or distant — it’s brutally honest, confronting, and eye-opening.

What struck me most was the resilience and determination at the core of this journey. The ability to acknowledge one’s past, face unimaginable conditions, and still find a way to live each day with purpose is both humbling and inspiring. It’s a story that lingers, challenging you to reflect on justice, humanity, and survival.

A remarkable, unforgettable account — gritty, honest, and absolutely worth the read.

WoW what a story. So very sad....... but how strong were these men, to be able to survive something like they endured. Made me cry, then smile then cry hypotheses at the end. A must read for everybody, especially for youngsters that think the grass is greener somewhere else.....it isnt.

A raw, honest and at times difficult to read memoir of life in a Thai prison. Leo describes a very testing time, detailing his resilience to survive and yet full of hope and zest for life after everything. I sadly couldn’t give this 4* as a further edit would have really helped - there is repetition on too many pages. But a book I’m very happy to have read.

A gripping reminder of how even the smallest of silly ideas can get you in so much trouble. A quick read detailing the journey of 3 friends who ended up trying to fight the Thai legal system. Gritty detail takes you through their emotional journey of survival and friendship. Worth a read!

Quake Book!

Some books shake you up from the first page all the way to the end. A total page-turner. Thank you Léo for sharing your story. This book goes right up there with Shackleton. Your story shows what endurance is at the extremes of life in prison.

This book was really well written. I was engrossed in it from the beginning. People do make mistakes and sadly Leo and his friends paid the ultimate price. Prison in Thailand especially in Pattaya was so degrading for them. Having to use the bathroom the way they did strips you of your dignity. I was so happy when Leo and Marco were reunited. Leo is an amazing young man. He learned from his mistakes, accepted his punishment and came out the other side a much better man. I think he would do amazing as a motivational speaker especially for young people. I hope he has an amazing happy and long life with his family. I also really hopes he writes another book about his life after prison.

This graphic book was very well written and made me feel I was feeling and smelling everything Leo felt! I could picture the people in my mind and Leo’s courage shone through. Yes the unnecessarily repetitive passages were a bit distracting, it felt like de ja vu 😂 But overall I would recommend this to anyone curious about a raw heartfelt experience laid out bare 💖

14 Years a Prisoner is an eye-opening memoir that takes readers deep into the harsh realities of Thailand’s prison system. Léo Maruin’s story is raw and brutally honest, yet it’s also full of surprising moments of resilience and humanity. What stood out most to me was how he found strength in unexpected places—through music, through instinct, and through rare friendships that reminded him he was still human despite the system’s attempt to break him. I enjoyed reading it because it didn’t sugarcoat anything, and it left me reflecting on how much strength people can summon when survival is the only option.

Wow—this book hit me like a punch to the gut and then made me cheer at the same time. 14 Years a Prisoner isn’t some fluffy story—it’s raw, real, and straight-up intense. I felt like I was crammed right into those cells, smelling the sweat and fear, but also rooting for Léo every single step. What I loved most? He doesn’t just survive—he shows how grit, humor, and even music can keep a soul alive in the darkest places. Trust me, you won’t forget this ride anytime soon. 🔒🔥

Just ok

I’ve read a lot of prison stories and this one fell very flat for me. I was ready for it to be over half way through. No big climax or engaging story, it felt very repetitive. It seemed as though ideas were noted down and then in the next paragraph those rough ideas were edited into full form, it made for a confusing and aggravating read. I praise him for his story and sharing it with us. I applaud his journey and thank him for sharing it with us.

I can’t give this five stars despite how moving and remarkable the story was, as it deeply irritated me how many times throughout the book that a section would be repeated but worded completely differently? needs better proofreading!

AI Slop

Em dashes everywhere. Stereotyped flowery phrasing. Repetitive. The author is supposed to be French, but this was not written by a French person or even by a human. Don’t waste your time.
