Eduardo and his brother have been living in the US for three years when their parents send them back to Guatemala for the holidays. It is 1984 and their native country, in the midst of a violent civil war, feels newly alien to them – their Spanish faltering, already half-forgotten. Their grandfather collects the boys from the airport and drives them into the mountains, depositing them at what they’re told is a Jewish summer camp.

At the camp, the children meet a counsellor called Samuel a handsome young man with sky-blue eyes who knows about all kinds of things. He shows them how to make a survival shelter out of branches and leaves, and how to kindle a fire using a glass bottle. He sings songs with them and plays games. But he also trains them to march in rank, and salute, and dive for cover. He teaches them the Hebrew words for ‘grenade’ and ‘soldier’ and ‘silence’.

On the fourth day, everything changes. The boys are shaken from their beds at dawn. A terrifying figure, uniformed in black, looms over them, and beyond him is the sound of screaming outside. Eduardo looks into the stranger’s face – it is Samuel Blum, but his sky-blue eyes look different now. In his hand he carries a club. Crawling down his left arm is a huge tarantula.

Thought-provoking and powerfully ambivalent, Tarantula is an extraordinary meditation on the many complex afterlives of the Holocaust. It is a novel about individual and collective inheritance, individual and collective violence; about memory, trauma, connection and estrangement. It asks what it means to be a Jew in the long wake of the twentieth century, and how the past lives on in the present.

Eduardo Halfon nació en 1971 en la ciudad de Guatemala. UU.) y el Edward Lewis Wallant Award (EE. UU.). Su novela Canción recibió el Premio Cálamo Extraordinario. En 2018 le fue otorgado el Premio Nacional de Literatura de Guatemala, el mayor galardón literario de su país natal.

Nota curiosa (o chisme): Me gusta buscar a los autores cuando tengo algo que decirles, preguntarles o felicitarles. Le envié un tweet a Eduardo felicitándolo y además le mencioné que tiene dos errores bíblicos en su narración (que no quise poner en mi reseña para no perjudicar al autor), que si estaba interesado en saber cuáles eran, con gusto se lo decía.
Hoy me bloqueó en tweeter.

En un tiempo en el que un bloque de noticias va de la Met Gala a un genocidio y mientras miramos la tele totalmente anestesiados es importante entender el trauma generacional y el legado de violencia que arrastra la comunidad judía y como hay sectores que no solo no están dispuestos a pasar página, sino que están armados para lo que sea. Halfon dice sobre su propia novela que «para un niño, empezar a deshacer el mundo heredado es uno de los pequeños pasos paulatinos hacia construir uno propio». Y esto no lo dice él, lo digo yo. Si prefiere romper con la herencia que sus mayores le imponen y ser su propia persona o perpetuar el ciclo de violencia y hacer suya esa máxima (citada en el libro) de que quien quiera la paz que se prepare para la guerra.

Eduardo Halfon has written a chilling and thought-provoking book that explores the unprocessed trauma that occurred when he and his brother were sent to a Jewish summer camp in 1980s Guatemala. It was a time in his life when he was 13, at an age where he was trying to dismantle his parents’ world – the first small step toward building his own – by rejecting their ideas, their language, and most scandalous, their religion.

Their parents insist the brothers participate in the camp to rediscover where they came from and learn the ways of survival in the wild for Jewish children. They are promised adventure. But they get more than they bargained for – a fake concentration camp that forces the children to experience first-hand the trauma and humiliations their grandparents had to undergo. Rather than creating a sense of belonging, it leaves Eduardo with an ongoing feeling of displacement and fear.

Tarantula – the title of the book – refers to a “huge tarantula” that young Eduardo imagines crawling down the arm of the camp counselor, Samuel Blum, who transforms into a “Nazi commandant” just as the tarantula transforms into a swastika. As a boy who has only begun the journey of adulthood, Eduardo cannot shake the images until later in life, when he reunited with Samuel Blum again, this time in Berlin. There, the “forest opened up slightly”, but it’s not difficult to suspect that with the elusiveness of memory and the collective transmission of the heinous Holocaust years, the narrator will never be entirely free from the horror he and the others experienced.

Está lejos de ser el mejor Halfon porque si lo has leído ves que ha perdido la frescura y el recuerdo o añoranza que sí que incluye en sus otros libros.

En este caso se queda en lo anecdótico y queda como a medio hacer, sin el usual análisis que sobrevuela otros de sus libros.

Aún así, si te gusta el autor es otra pieza más en su obra que se disfruta y se lee de una sentada.

Hallucinant. Wat is fictie en wat is realiteit.
Een boek waar menig leesgroepen een vette kluif aan kunnen hebben.

Sturen Joodse ouders hun kinderen nu werkelijk naar een luguber vakantiekamp omdat kleinkinderen nooit mogen vergeten wat hun grootouders overkomen is? Maw een jeugdkamp waar kinderen gedropt worden om vernietigingskampje te spelen?

Als we de fictie van Eduardo Halfon mogen geloven wel. Hij zou in de jaren 80 samen met zijn broer op zomerkamp in Guatemala gestuurd zijn.

We beleven de ervaringen van Eduardo door zijn kinderogen, wat resulteert in bizarre vaststellingen.

Pas als zijn relaas als volwassene (hij woont dan in Berlijn) nav een gesprek jaren later met kampleider Samuel zijn intrede doet, wordt een en ander duidelijk.

Een tarantula krijgt voor altijd een andere invulling.

Na Deuntje en Tarantula kan ik stellen: 'sterke schrijver, maar niet de mijne.'
De zeer fragmentarische vertelstructuur deed me meer ontkoppelen en distantiëren dan engageren en meeleven.
Heel goed dat hij het aan 'The Holocaust industry' ( Finkelstein) aanleunende thema aankaart, maar de beweegredenen en systematiek erachter had prominenter mogen worden belicht.

"Is de verbeelding zo vermetel en onberekenbaar dat ze een herinnering kan verzinnen en ervoor kan zorgen dat we die als echt ervaren? Eigenlijk doet het er niet toe. Dat bord heeft echt bestaan. Ik heb het gezien of ik heb het verzonnen, voor een kind komt dat op hetzelfde neer." (p. 57)

Het verhaal draait rond een jeugdherinnering van de verteller, die sterk op Eduardo Halfon lijkt, een schrijver die eerder per toeval op mijn leesradar is verschenen. Als tiener neemt hij - op aansturen van zijn ouders - samen met zijn broer deel aan een ogenschijnlijk onschuldig zomerkamp voor joodse jongeren in Guatemala. Al snel blijkt echter dat dit kamp niet is wat het lijkt en loopt een en ander grondig uit de hand. (En eigenlijk mag je niet meer dan dit lezen op voorhand, iets wat ik jammer genoeg wel had gedaan.)

Halfon schrijft in een sobere stijl die de leeservaring des te sterker maakt, alsook de beklemmende zaken die hij beschrijft. Hij vermijdt een expliciet moreel oordeel en laat je als lezer zelf worstelen met vragen over verantwoordelijkheid en medeplichtigheid. Het is juist deze terughoudendheid die de kracht van deze roman is: het ongemak sluimert tussen de regels. En op één of andere manier blijven de zaken die hij beschrijft, alsook de herinneringen, aan je 'kleven': "Ik droomde van mijn vader. Het is vele jaren geleden en hoewel ik me onmogelijk alle details van die korte koortsdromen kan herinneren, zijn de beelden, de woorden, de intensiteit en zelfs de smaak ervan me bijgebleven. Sommige dromen laten een smaak na. Sommige dromen laten ons nooit meer los, alsof we nog steeds slapen en de rest van ons leven dezelfde droom blijven dromen." (p. 100)

De fragmentarische structuur, waarin herinneringen, reflecties en tijdsprongen elkaar afwisselen, weerspiegelt de manier waarop trauma zich in het geheugen nestelt: onvolledig, maar hardnekkig. Je stelt je als lezer bovendien sowieso ergens in het verhaal de vraag wat er echt is gebeurd en wat niet. Heb je met een onbetrouwbare verteller te maken of kan je vertrouwen dat hetgeen wordt beschreven min of meer is hoe het gegaan is? En is dit verhaal überhaupt echt gebeurd en dus (deels) autobiografisch?

Naast het feit dat het een persoonlijk verhaal is, met enorm veel details en schitterende passages (ik heb er heel wat neergeschreven) waarin de verteller op zijn eigen jeugd terugblikt, bevat de roman ook een bredere kritiek op nationalisme en groepsdruk of -denken. Halfon toont zo hoe jonge mensen gevormd - of misvormd - kunnen worden door ideologieën, verpakt als opvoeding of 'traditie'. Tegelijkertijd blijft het echter een hyper persoonlijk boek, waarin schaamte en zelfreflectie centraal staan. Een aangename kennismaking alvast.

"Vivo en un hogar cuyos pilares son dos libros que no he leído, pero me han definido: el Popol Vuh y La Torá. De ese hogar estoy siempre tratando de huir"

Como en otros libros que he leído de Halfón (Canción, Duelo), desarrolla una historia que parece ser autobiográfica, en la que el protagonista y narrador es el mismo Eduardo Halfón. Aparecen, como en otros, el abuelo polaco y el abuelo libanés, la violencia en Guatemala de los años '70 a '90. Aunque a diferencia de los otros que leí, que suelen ser amables, de lectura plácida, Tarántula es mucho más dramática e inquietante.

En este caso se centra en un campamento judío en la selva de un altiplano de Guatemala, al que sus padres, viviendo en EEUU, envían a Eduardo y su hermano, y los acontecimientos que ocurrieron y cuya recuerdo va apareciendo en distintos momentos de su vida, girando además en las identidades no elegidas que de alguna manera nos determinan y nos limitan.

De roman is doorspekt met symboliek en handelt over intergenerationeel trauma.

El espejo del deber (Comentario, 2025)

Sigo sin encontrar un libro de Halfon que no me guste. Su escritura es precisa, pero no en el sentido de un reloj, de un mecanismo. En el sentido de un corte, de una incisión necesaria para drenar el veneno de un cuerpo a quien le regaló la víbora su mordisco. Precisa como la herida que incapacita y no mata al soldado desertor. Precisa como el movimiento que nos salva, por un pelo, de morir atropellados por un bus en la vía pública.

En "Tarántula" se narra un campamento que es una farsa y que es, al mismo tiempo, un trauma contundente. Muchas farsas, en algún sentido, lo son. Lo que diferencia la mentira del arte de otras mentiras es la voluntad de participación en ella. Sabemos que el teatro no es la vida, incluso si la obra nos hace dudar de eso. Sabemos que el libro no es la realidad, incluso cuando las ventas vendan diciendo que son basados en hechos reales. La ficción es un pacto voluntario, y de ese acuerdo florecen asombros que pueden transformar nuestra manera de existir en el mundo, asombros cuyas consecuencias son luminosas.

Pero forzar a la farsa es sostener a alguien frente a un espejo deformado y obligarle a cumplir con esa imagen. Forzar a la farsa es una forma de violencia bestial. Aquí hay un campamento que se convierte, sin conocimiento ni permiso de los niños participantes, en una experiencia de campo de concentración, todo con la justificación de hacerlos tomar consciencia de la vivencia judía durante el Holocausto. La anécdota es terrible. La escritura es buena. De ahí este libro surge.

En anotación al margen, leyendo lo terrible de la obra recordé una anécdota sobre un campamento que hacía Colegios Por Medellín en mi ciudad, donde también forzando a la farsa se hacía un secuestro exprés de los y las adolescentes participantes, con arrodillada en el fango y gritos y miedo. ¿Cómo pudo parecernos normal tanta violencia? ¿Cómo puede parecernos normal tanta violencia?

Una pieza más del puzzle narrativo que Halfon está construyendo libro a libro. Como siempre: prosa cuidadísima, una estructura narrativa que mezcla tiempos, lugares, registros. Y los temas de siempre: la identidad judía y guatemalteca, la memoria del Holocausto y sus secuelas, la violencia.

När jag förra året läste och skrev om ”Cancíon” av Halfon funderade på om det kunde vara kombinationen av den judiska och latinamerikanska traditionen som gjorde den så bra. ”Tarantel” får mig att tro att det är just så, och att boken inleds med en fras av den fantastiska argentinska poeten Alejandra Pizarnik som också hade judisk påbrå styrker ytterligare tesen (slänger man även in Clarice Lispector i mixen kan man nog få till en fullfjädrad spaning värdig P1).

Det här är en fantastisk kortroman, nära nog perfekt och till och med starkare än ”Cancíon”. Även här får vi möte författarens namne och följa honom i såväl barndom som vuxenliv. Bokens epicentrum är det judiska sommarläger i Guatemala som han och hans bror skickas till och som utan förvarning förvandlas till en fruktansvärd övning i överlevnad och påminnelse om det förflutna. Händelsen sätter spår i Eduardos vuxna liv och ett oväntat möte sätter igång minnet och tankar kring vad han verkligen var med om.

Halfon skriver lysande med ett skarpt öga för såväl komposition som detaljer och liksom förra gången kan jag bara hoppas att det kommer fler översättningar till svenska av hans böcker framöver.

No sé cuánto hay de deber a la casualidad a la hora de que la lectura de un libro coincida con un momento histórico en el que parte de su temática está a la orden del día. Lo que sé es que la lectura de esta novela donde la autobiografía (o autoficción) se mezcla con la crónica quizá, con el judaísmo como telón de fondo permanente.

Halfon arma una novela, o un libro si nos atamos a la definición de novela que me gusta a mi, la de libro de ficción, donde sus recuerdos de un evento traumático en su paso de la infancia a la juventud le persiguen toda la vida. Premiada con el Premio de la Crítica en España, este libro no deja de ser un cúmulo de recuerdos pasados y presentes con un nexo común: la identidad judía, su pasado, su presente y su futuro, pero bajo el tono y la mirada del autor guatemalteco, que no deja lugar a la duda en la crítica velada que se hace sobre el radicalismo encastrado en cierta corriente extremista sionista que es la que daña y destroza toda la memoria de su pasado.

No suelo ser yo muy de novelas autobiográficas o con mucha carga personal en la narración, pero he de decir que esta obra me ha sobrecogido por el nivel de claridad y crítica que se desarrolla en sus páginas. Totalmente merecido el premio recibido.

is imagination so fanciful and audacious that it can invent a memory and then transform it into something we understand as true? anyway, it doesn't matter. that sign existed. i saw it or imagined it, which for a kid is the same thing.

across four previous books in english translation (the polish boxer, monastery, mourning, and canción), guatemalan author eduardo halfon has mined memory to help make sense of the past. with beautiful prose, storytelling verve, and detective-level inquisitiveness for what came before, halfon exhumes the yesteryears of self and family.

so his quest continues in tarantula, this time turning his spade to recollections of a frightening, violent incident endured as a young boy attending a jewish overnight camp. nearly a half-century later on a different continent, halfon is unexpectedly presented with the opportunity to unearth answers to the many lasting questions sprung from that fateful december in the guatemalan forest wilderness. the fear and panic those moments indelibly marked upon body and mind resurface as if the past were indeed not even past. halfon seems unafraid to root around in the darkness and his writing burns bright as a disinterring torch.

(and you won't ever think of the titular arachnid in the same way again)

Interesante y breve lectura.

Un adolescente guatemalteco de origen judío es enviado por sus padres a un campamento de verano, calificado como una especie de "cursillo de supervivencia para niños judíos". ¿Por qué para niños judíos? Pronto lo sabrán.

Porque lo que al principio es una especie de vacaciones al estilo "boy-scouts", un día de repente se convierte en la recreación de un campo de concentración nazi. Los monitores aparecen con uniforme y esvástica, y empiezan a humillar a los chavales como si estuvieran en un verdadero campo de concentración.

Halfon nos recrea el episodio alternando el pasado y el presente. La historia cuenta con elementos autobiográficos de los que desconocemos su verdadero alcance (he intentado averiguarlo a través de artículos y entrevistas, sin éxito): el autor admite el fondo autobiográfico, a la vez que lo define como novela. El niño protagonista tiene el mismo nombre, nacionalidad y religión que el autor, y también vive exiliado en EE.UU. ¿Experimentó esta brutal experiencia en su infancia? Y de ser así, ¿hasta qué nivel? Lo desconocemos.

En cualquier caso, el libro, sin tomar partido, sirve como denuncia de los extremos de los nacionalismos de todo tipo (sionista, en este caso), e invita a reflexionar. Interesante.

Pues muy bien. O me he perdido algo o es totalmente insustancial. Vamos que menudo libro más chorra y soso.
Escribe bien el autor. Indudable.
Pero vamos que si de cada vivencia se marca un libro...pues tela.
Y en este caso, la vivencia, ni aporta ni va a ningún lado.

Tarantula is een perfect geconstrueerde roman die je vangt in een web waaruit je niet meer kan ontsnappen. De grens tussen herinnering en waarheid is bijzonder flou en dat maakt het intrigerend, want gaat dit nu over Halfon of niet? En hoe betrouwbaar zijn zijn herinneringen? Ik kan je verzekeren: het fascineert en zindert na. Een ontdekking, die Halfon!

Coming to terms with one’s identity — or rather, constructing it — is a never-ending process. One weaves together memories, unearths family lore, and adds layers of life experiences and conversations with others. As the years pass, the picture becomes more complete, but is it clearer? As children, we start with a black-and-white world, then add all shades of gray in between — only to end up where? Where we started? Somewhere new?
Tarantula by Eduardo Halfon deconstructs the unreliability of memory and how distorted it might become over time, especially when dealing with traumatic experiences. With the multiplicity of perspectives — people remembering different aspects of an event — one starts to doubt their own memory and everything built upon it. Halfon’s writing is a constant exercise in soul-searching. And that is why, I keep coming back to his books.
One of the questions that will stay with me after reading this book: If we crave peace, do we need to prepare for war?

Sterk kort verhaal. Bijzonder goed opgebouwd. Hafon vertelt hoe hij als kind door zijn ouders naar een kamp in de Guatemalteekse bergen werd gestuurd met de gedachte om hem weer in contact te brengen met het jodendom. Maar het kampt neemt een zeer cynische wending. Gaat (zoals blijkbaar meerdere boeken van deze auteur) over de zoektocht naar je identiteit. Erg actueel.
