You're Only As Happy As Your Saddest Child

Rate this book
You’re Only As Happy… collects tales that first found a home in collections and journals elsewhere, together with three new stories and 2024’s strictly limited novella Rumsy Schoolchildren. Steeped, as ever, in peninsular folklore, these nine tales are unsettling and filled with disquiet. As ever, it might not be for you—

For several years now, Broodcomb, a small press in the UK, has published the best horror fiction I read in the given year. You’re Only as Happy as Your Saddest Child is their latest volume, a collection of eight stories and a short novel, “Rumsy Schoolchildren,” previously issued but rapidly out of print. The other eight stories are all effective, weird, and linked through the imaginary geography of the peninsula, as well as somewhat thematically. All are good; some are excellent. Mostly they are stories of moments when one crosses the border from here to there, reason into madness, and daylight into twilight (or someplace darker, if one is unlucky).
