Grammy-winning musician Ani DiFranco explores her creativity, spirituality, and evolving consciousness in conversation with coauthor Lauren Coyle Rosen.
THE SPIRIT OF ANI is a captivating journey of intimate reflections with Ani DiFranco, a pathbreaking, highly original artist. In this powerful collaborative work, the legendary folk-rock star and feminist icon is in conversation with author, artist, and cultural anthropologist Lauren Coyle Rosen. In these exchanges, Ani is remarkably open about her creativity, spirituality, personal experiences, and evolving consciousness. She is vulnerable and unapologetic, offering an unprecedented window into her fiercely prolific activities.
Expanding on themes from her best-selling memoir, Ani also offers fascinating reflections on contemporary popular culture—ranging from gender and queer politics, to the music industry in the virtual age, to climate change. The book includes previously unpublished photographs and journal entries, song-birth sheets, paintings, and the lyrics for some of her most treasured songs. The coauthors explore how Ani’s music and art are profoundly tied to her experiences of the interconnectedness of all consciousness and tuning in to receive creative inspiration. Ani’s striking openness produces a book that is both meditative and activating. This is a must-read for anyone intrigued by the dedication, intuition, and vision that drive Ani’s lifelong journey of creating art that not only reflects, but also empowers, transforms, and heals.

I enjoyed this book a lot more than I thought I would. I adore Ani and have been a fan since the beginning. Lauren poses questions to Ani about intuition and ego and self and family and consciousness - and it's nothing new or uncharted or surprising. But Ani's responses are 100 percent Ani, and make this unlike any other New Age-type book I've ever read. She's honest and conversational and funny and deep and thoughtful and unsure. It's a very refreshing twist on other books I've read that come off all too knowing. She's in the knowing, alright - nod to Ani lyrics – but a different flavor of knowing. The unknowing kind of knowing.
I’ll just eat up and adore any content from Ani. I just love how real and honest she is. She has grit and she doesn’t feel performative. The interviewer though, had a tone that bothered me. It felt like she was pushing a narrative and not adapting to Ani’s frequency. Either way, still enjoyed 🎶
The Spirit of Ani is most aptly described as a long form interview. Each of the chapters features the transcript from a conversation between Rosen and DiFranco, along with a couple of paragraphs by Rosen as she explains the goal of the conversation and the topic to expect in the coming pages. I wasn’t anticipating this format going in, but I think it served the material well. When discussing mysticism and spirituality, getting to see the exact phrasing DiFranco uses to explain herself is important. It brought a conversational aspect to the book that wouldn’t have existed otherwise.
