I 'picked up' (downloaded) this fairytale story with the hopes that it would enlighten my imagination in a way only whimsically written tales can. With such a strong title like "The Dragon King" one cannot expect to go into such a tale without the belief it will be magical and perfect. As an avid fairytale reader, I have come to learn that often the most overlooked, under-noticed, and few-reviewed indie books can bring forth the best reading experiences. I had a feeling 'The Dragon King' wouldn't disappoint, and for such an affordable download price how could I pass it up?

So I took a chance and sat down for the story. The Dragon King follows Prince Regan- a likable, humble, and surprisingly not 'tacky and royal' character. For a prince, he's quite an ordinary man. He's the kind of prince we ordinary female readers can fall in love with and enjoy. Prince Regan finds himself thrown into a tale of fantasy and intrigue with all of the aspects of a true fantasy adventure. Of course- there are dragons. There's a lady (a surprisingly relatable, likable, and strong female character). And there are plenty of other fun creatures and characters that even the most cynical adults can fall in love with.

Dan does an exquisite job of taking the reader straight into a Renaissance inspired world. And Laurie brings his words to life in breath-taking detail. There are very few books that can span the generational gap and bring together event the littlest children, most insincere teenagers, young adults, older adults, and grandparents alike. The Dragon King is one of those few books. It's magic comes straight out of the pages and into your heart. Unlike other fairytale books, The Dragon King is filled with an adventurous plot, lived out with surprisingly real characters. And although the story takes place in a fantasy world, the realism of the people experiencing this entertaining tale makes it so much more believable.

This book is hard to not fall in love with. I saw it had been recently released through a Facebook post, loved the cover, loved the title, and had a gut feelings it'd be worth it to stamp my name onto the first person who's reviewed it. I was not disappointed. In fact I'm pleasantly surprised. It's not often I come across a book that I know right away is going to be something special. But this was one of those books. Well-written, beautifully illustrated, and a literary piece that will remain in ingrained in your memory for the best of reasons. Hands down a five star reading experience, and I, from the bottom of my heart, cannot more highly recommend this book. I cannot wait to buy it in print!
