Peyton and Marco have solved many challenging cases with the SFPD Homicide Division, but when a respiratory therapist, Savannah Daniels, is found murdered in her apartment, the evidence is particularly thin. That is until Savannah herself offers them assistance from beyond the grave. Will Peyton and Marco be able to accept that the veil has fallen enough for Savannah to help solve her own murder, or will a cold-blooded killer escape justice?
A Peyton Brooks Homicide follows San Francisco’s dynamic crime-fighting duo, Peyton Brooks and Marco D’Angelo, through their early cases in the Homicide Division.

The Early Cases for the Peyton Brooks saga - so smartly written by M.L. Hamilton - is real treat for readers and listeners of this incredible dynasty. Not only do we get a great mystery in the tradition of all the work by M.L. Hamilton, but we get to return to the early days of Peyton and Marco as homicide detectives in the great city of San Francisco. Even though this beloved duo and their community have progressed so very far beyond that time in the various series that have come since their first cases. I was especially captivated by Fallen Veil. We have a murder with a multitude of possible perpetrators within the confines of the tiny universe of a hospital. I was very surprised at the outcome of the case. The case work by Brooks and DeAngelis is particularly procedural in this mystery in the most wonderful way. I truly felt like I was moving in tandem with the cops as they sussed out the criminal. Their work is 'shadowed' by the supernatural element that Hamilton threads in and out of this story, making it a fantastic Halloween listen - if you like to read/listen to books that reflect the Season. To shine a little light on the recording process - there is a minor character in this mystery that specifically reminded me of actor Steve Buscemi's performance in the film, 'Living in Oblivion'. He was a ton of fun to record. See if you can spot who he is!
"Fallen Veil" by M.L. Hamilton is another stellar addition to the Peyton Brooks Homicide: The Early Cases series. From the opening scene, the story grips you with a complex murder investigation that unfolds with precision and suspense. The author’s ability to weave procedural detail with character-driven storytelling is truly impressive.
What really stood out in this book was the evolution of Peyton and Marco’s relationship. Their growing connection feels natural and adds emotional depth without overshadowing the central mystery. The entire team dynamic remains strong, and it’s always a pleasure to revisit these familiar characters as they work together to solve the case.
Kelley Hazen’s narration elevates the experience to another level. Her voice work is impeccable—each character is distinct, and the emotional tone is spot-on throughout. She brings intensity to the tense moments and warmth to the personal interactions, making this audiobook impossible to pause.
Fans of crime fiction and character-rich narratives will find Fallen Veil a perfect blend of intrigue and heart. This series continues to deliver, and I’m eagerly looking forward to what comes next for Peyton and her team.
I was given this free review copy audiobook at my request and I have voluntarily left this review.
I was voluntarily provided this free review copy audiobook by the narrator and enjoyed it very much. It’s always fun to listen to Peyton and Marco adventures from their earlier cases. When respiratory therapist, Savannah Daniels is found dead and all leads go nowhere. Should they listen to a woman visions of the murder. As with all the other Peyton books, this book is suspenseful and action pack showing both the bad and good sides of society. This combination of author and narrator creates pure enjoyment with the author has a special talent to create characters and stories that feel real and the narrator brings every story to life. This story is just the perfect length for a nice escape.
This is not a part of the series but kind of a prequel to the series of books with her partner Marco D'Angelo . In this story a girl who has visions tries to warn a regular customer at her coffee kiosk to be careful. That evening the customer is murdered and the barista, Cassie, 'sees' it. Cassie ends up helping Peyton and Marco solve the crime. I absolutely love these characters and can't wait till the next book is written and released.
OMG!!! I can't get enough of this series. I love the characters & can't wait for the next novel. I've been reading about Peyton starting with the detective series & then the FBI. I'm addicted to it. The storylines are so full of suspense they keep me riveted until the end. I'm a huge fan of M.L. Hamilton & can't wait to see where we go next.
