Embers of Love

Another scorcher from Phoenix Ridge!

Ember and Josephine only meant it to be for one night only, but their sexual chemistry ignited an inferno. Now we're treated to an age-gap, forbidden romance that is literally smoking in so many ways.

The epilogue was pretty sweet, too 🥰

To quote another reviewer, who may or may not have been smoking peyote in the desert, "Another scorcher in the Phoenix Ridge series!" And by scorcher, I mean dumpster fire.

The ocean that appeared in Book 3 appears to have receded now that Phoenix Ridge is "ensconced" by the desert. Now, that's climate change for you.

This story revolves around firefighter and suicidal ideator, Ember Thompson and surgeon and alleged new head of the Phoenix Ridge Hospital, Josephine Mars.

Ember apparently defines herself by her relationships, or lack thereof, so this explains her risky choices, like racing and rushing into fires. Oh, and her mom and boss, Fire Chief Becky Thompson is a bit much. She likes to drag race--so consider this Chekov's Muscle Car.

Josephine Mars apparently wants her patients to praise her for her efforts, so she leaves her fancy hospital in New York and becomes head of Phoenix Ridge. Despite that description, she seems to have a boss and despite being a surgeon, she only performs an appendectomy and some basic paramedic procedures.

Josephine was long distance besties with Becky, so when she moves there, Becky tells her to sign up on a dating app. At the same time, Ember's firefighting buddies tell her to do the same thing. Naturally, they both lie about their names and ages--while complaining about people doing that very thing. When they meet for dinner they also never ask what the other one does for a job. Josephine's profile said she was a business woman. No further questions needed.

That's probably because they were too wrapped up in scintillating conversation--

Ember: Did you just move to Phoenix Ridge recently?

Josephine: Yes, I just moved recently.

Ember: Where are you from?

Josephine: New York.

Ember: Wow, big city. I've lived in Phoenix Ridge all my life.

Josephine (to herself): The conversation was flowing smoothly...

I wish this wasn't pretty much word for word. But, this is what passes for good convo in Phoenix Ridge.

Josephine later thinks "Emma (Ember) clearly believed Josephine to be the businesswoman she claimed to be." Foolish woman!

Not long after that, this woman who has a medical doctorate and is proclaimed to be an excellent surgeon has trouble with seatbelt of a 70s-era Camaro.

As this is a Hayes book, sex comes quickly, and Josephine thinks:

"It was like nothing she ever felt before, particularly with someone she just met."

Or, to put it another way, "It was like nothing she ever felt before." That's all you need. That's why you use the words "nothing' and "ever". No qualifiers need apply.

Hayes fills her books with unnecessary description and repetition. Did we need a step by step description of Ember getting in her car and merging into traffic on the highway? The answer is god yes. When the chapters switch perspective between the two women, Emily has them frequently go through the same events we just saw in the previous chapter from the other's perspective. Does it give much enlightenment into character? No, not a bit.

Then there are marvelous moments like this, "No," the man refused. Well, it's a good thing she let us know that "no" is a refusal. Imagine the fun if it had been, "No," the man agreed.

I feel like my snippets are ignoring Ember. Apologies. After the night of passion, mom wants Ember to meet her bestie. Uh oh!

Ember: She was certain she wasn't going to like any of her mother's friends. Okay, that was the introvert in her speaking.

What? Assuming you'll dislike your mother's friends isn't "introvert" behavior. Further, Ember isn't an introvert. Did you mean antisocial? Or her automatic anti-maternal bias?

Josephine also has parental issues, despite being 20 years older than Ember (at 49), her father is quite spry if somewhat insane. He returns from a long sojourn in Europe or somesuch and drops by Josephine's work in New York. He is told she quit. Does he call her? Heavens no. He goes to her apartment to find she moved. Despite not being concerned, he finally calls her. That Josephine quit her job and moved and never told her father is hardly explained.

To cut through the slog, Ember and Josephine keep their relationship secret from Becky because "mom/best friend" and because of the 21-year age difference that matters to Josephine but not Ember. Of course, this blows up and blows up the relationship.

Oh, and while Ember is called a great firefighter, she is actually terrible. She repeatedly ignores protocol and goes to the hospital three times. Granted one was in an accident caused by random drag racers which connected to nothing. Ember, after the inevitable HEA and apparently inevitable motherhood turn, quits being a firefighter. She does have a brief moment of self-awareness regarding her self-destructive tendencies, but really everyone is better off if that woman is not let near a fire department.

Josephine? I assume she stayed head of the hospital. Emily didn't really care to elaborate much on her career, so why should I care either?

Loving Phoenix Ridge

Emily Hayes makes me want to move to Phoenix Ridge. With the beautiful surroundings and the powerful, independent women that assist in running the town, what is there not to like! With each book in the series, Ms Hayes introduces us to incredible women who express a burning love.

Adrenaline Junkie

Ember Thompson is a firefighter and the daughter of the Chief. She is known for taking risks and running into the fire. When she sets up a date with an older woman, she has no idea that “Scarlett” is actually Dr. Josephine Mars, her mother’s best friend. A story of forbidden love and a search for happiness. Great age gap sapphic romance.

A Great and Exciting Love Story

I have read several of the Phoenix Ridge books and I think this is one of the best. Josephine and Ember are great heroines and I could feel their love for each other immediately. Great story and series.
