Faye gets sent to a boarding school on a remote island, though it’s actually more of a prison rather than a school. That’s because it’s a school for wicked children, children who’ve done something really bad. But even though she has been a bit of a problem child, Faye doesn’t know what she could have done that was so bad that she needed to be exiled so far away from everything and everyone she loves. So Faye goes exploring the island, hoping to find the reason why she’s there in the first place. But that’s not the only thing she is looking for.
The mystery plot is what drives the story forward. And it’s really good. It’s hard to say what I like about the mystery without spoiling it. And since the mystery is such a key component to my enjoyment of this story, I’ll leave it at that.
The protagonist is fleshed out enough to make us care about her. And the other characters are quite interesting too. But it’s the atmospheric setting and the prose that lure you in like a siren’s song and refuse to let you go. That’s what stands out the most to me here. I also really like how the protagonist feels something is missing from the island as all the trees are gone. Because I know from experience that a simple walk through the park for example can be a bit of a mental boost when you need it. So being a prisoner on an island without any trees does make the entire setting feel even more depressing. It’s a little detail. But it does help elevate the setting as a whole.
A mystery that instantly had me hooked. Gripping from start to finish. A very simple but effective setting that still manages to speak to the imagination. And a protagonist I couldn’t help but root for. Yeah, this is a middle grade historical fiction mystery book I had no trouble devouring. What a wicked book.

In Het eiland aan de rand van de nacht wordt Faye naar een kostschool gebracht, gevestigd op een grimmig Schots eiland. Op deze kostschool zitten kinderen die niet willen luisteren of iets onvergeeflijks hebben gedaan. Faye valt in de laatste categorie.
Faye voelt zich in de steek gelaten en worstelt met veel emoties tegelijkertijd. Ze weet, doordat het haar vertelt is, dat ze iets verschrikkelijks heeft gedaan. Maar wat? Daar heeft ze geen herinneringen meer aan. Ze wil bij haar vader blijven, maar ze denkt tegelijkertijd dat als ze echt zo’n slecht mens is, dat ze het verdient om weggestuurd te worden.
Hoewel ze weet dat de kostschool opgericht is voor kinderen zoals zij, krijgt ze het gevoel dat er iets niet klopt. De andere kinderen op de kostschool lijken zo erg nog niet, ze sluit er zelfs vriendschappen mee. Faye is van nature een nieuwsgierig meisje en zodoende gaat ze op onderzoek uit. Ze ondervindt dat er een sinister complot zit achter de ‘kostschool’. Ze wil het haar vader laten weten, maar hoe doe je dat, als je volledig afgezonderd zit van de rest van de wereld?

Het eiland aan de rand van de nacht is zeker een aanrader voor de jonge speurneuzen onder ons. Vanuit Fayes perspectief kom je in een kostschool terecht waar dingen niet pluis zijn, maar het duurt even voordat alle puzzelstukjes verzameld zijn. Tevens worstelt Faye met het feit dat ze geen herinneringen heeft aan ‘de gebeurtenis’. Hierdoor blijft vrijwel in het gehele boek een mysterieus gespannen sfeer, waardoor je telkens door wilt lezen.
Dat Lucy Strange terecht een bekende jeugdboekenschrijver is bewijst ze wel weer met dit boek. Het bevat spanning en mysterie, maar bevat ook een diepere emotionele laag waardoor je ontroert raakt. Daarnaast bezit Strange over een goede dosis fantasie want zo dromerig als de cover van het boek eruit ziet, zo magisch voelt het verhaal ook aan.
De schrijfstijl van Strange is in Het eiland aan de rand van de nacht weer prachtig. Met mooie zinnen weet ze je te ontroeren, maar tevens creëert ze een heel poëtisch en sfeervol verhaal. Voor kinderen die moeite hebben met lezen is dit verhaal wellicht te ingewikkeld, maar zo niet, dan is het zeker een aanvulling op de woordenschat.

Great. Overlapping themes with some of Lucy Strange’s other books: the impact/aftermath of war in individuals and families; the (mal)treatment of people with mental health difficulties; and the vulnerability of children in the wrong hands.

A huge thanks to Scholastic/Chicken House for sending over a physical ARC. I said yes for the cover alone, look at its glory! Luckily the writing doesn’t disappoint either.
Faye Fitzgerald did something awful. She knows it, but she can’t seem to remember it. A dark and stormy night, the hole in the garden wall, and an incident that damaged an incredibly old yew tree, and her aunt! Faye was always a bit of an outsider, never wanting to stay in school, preferring to sit in the trees and read. So why would she have caused one damage? Her father can hardly stand to look at her, her aunt is bedridden, and this was the last straw. Sent away to a boarding school for troubled children on a remote island, Faye must struggle through mistreatment, misremembering, and more, all while the call of the forest is within nightly reach.
I really enjoyed the setting for this. The island is almost a character itself, the author allowing you to explore and map it out at the same time Faye does. Its placement in the 1930s allowed for some style in the writing, including some terms that have become dated otherwise, that actually raised this somewhat outside of the realm of middle grade or young adult. If possible, it lands somewhere as an elevated version of the two in a gothic mystery with elegant prose. I was hooked, the pages flowing, and I simply had to continue reading.
Faye is a great character. Referred to as “wicked” by the school’s owners, she constantly battles with that assessment, bearing her innocence, kindness, and love for others and nature to the world. She’s not some wicked thing, just a girl, a child, nothing more or less. Or, is she? The hints at magical realism, at the fantastical or supernatural, were plot points that had me so eager to read more to gain answers. Faye’s father, the botanist, the believer in faeries, the lover of trees and their eternal roots. That same love borne to Faye, that ache in her belly to be with nature. She is both intriguing as something possibly other, and as just a sweet girl in need of the right attention and love. To be nurtured within nature. You really can easily find yourself caring for her. Rooting for her.
Her friends on the island, which are made in secret or in shared trauma, Boudicca and Prince Filiberto, are both a great level of comic relief. I’m not certain the story itself needed levity, or that I expected it, but I was surely glad for it when it happened. Both bodacious, one is loud and proud, the other protective and dramatic. I thoroughly enjoyed them both. One of them refuses to submit, to bow down, the other, a survivor, manages to persist like something (less creepy though) from The Boy. Most importantly, they both accept, believe, and help Faye.
For me, the way the author manages to wrap everything up is what solidified it as a 5/5 read. The mystery is intriguing, but I had a few things pegged from the start—though this made it no less enjoyable. It was in how she took readers through to the end that sold it all for me. The emotional pull, the gut-punch of everything that’s been building, is very deftly handled. I got teary for sure. I felt for Faye, believed in her and her journey, so the ending was a grand slam. The relationships are so important to this story, and each of them were wrapped in a way that felt like a cozy blanket (albeit slightly emotionally barbed at first).
I think this would be the perfect read for kids that are fans of mystery or thriller, but also perhaps for those big-time young readers that want something with a tad more skill and weight to it. I will definitely be on the lookout for this author now!

Lucy Strange megint a múltba, az 1930-as évekbe helyezi a történetét, fontos szerepet kap benne a világháborúból hazatérők PTSD-je, meg az is, hogy ebben az időszakban a pszichiátria még mennyire kezdetleges cipőben járt és bárki visszaélhetett vele. Nagy szerepet kap Faye természetszeretete is: a kislány, aki egy igazi erdőben nőtt fel igencsak nehezen viselte, amikor a városba kellett költözniük és a korabeli nevelési elveknek megfelelően próbálták mindenáron korába szorítani. A sok lázadozása, a vágy, hogy minél közelebb kerülhessen a növényekhez, fákhoz és a zsigeri utálata minden szabállyal és bezártsággal szemben volt az ami miatt megkapta a sok inkompetens oktatótól, hogy “gonosz gyerek”. De az Alka szigeten lévő intézménybe kerülő többi fiatalt is mindenféle koholt rágalmak miatt küldték átnevelésre: legtöbbjük igazából csak nem akarja elfogadni a rájuk erőltetett felesleges szabályozást és lázadoznak, ami egyből nehezen kezelhetővé teszi őket a felnőttek szerint akik a legegyszerűbb és leghatásosabb megoldásokat keresik.
Mivel Faye a narrátorunk, az olvasó is fokozatosan tud meg dolgokat, úgyhogy izgalmas együtt kutatni a lánnyal és bár van pár lépés amit felnőtt fejjel előre lehet látni de azért még így is akadt pár esemény aminek az összefüggései teljesen váratlanul értek engem is, mint olvasót. Lucy Strange nagyon okosan olyan hősnőt alkotott, aki teljesen hétköznapinak tűnik és mindenképp szimpatizálunk vele, roppant magányos és vadócnak tűnik főleg ahogy mások elbeszéléseiből megtudjuk. Ugyanakkor a rendkívüli helyzetbe kerülve fokozatosan ébred rá a saját erősségeire és tud megfelelően talpraesetten reagálni a kockázatos helyzetekben is. Kiderül, hogy elég intelligens és okos ahhoz, hogy kezébe vegye a dolgokat ráadásul meg is nyílik és barátokat szerez, akik segítenek abban, hogy az intézetet leleplezzék.
Mesterien kidolgozott történet Lucy Strange regénye: megfelelően sötét és rejtélyes, elgondolkoztat és meglep, ahogy megszokhattuk tőle. Ráadásul megint kaptunk egy olyan hősnőt Faye személyében, akivel együtt izgalmas megfejteni nem csak az Alka-sziget rejtélyét de magában a lányban rejlő titkokat is.

Aangesproken door de omslag ben ik begonnen aan 'Eiland aan de rand van de nacht'. Benieuwd welke kant het verhaal op zou gaan ben ik blijven lezen in en ik kan maar één ding zeggen .... magisch.
Wat een prachtige teksten/zinnen komen er voorbij die je voelt ❤️.

In dit boek wordt Faye, die iets heel ergs heeft gedaan maar daar zelf geen herinnering aan heeft, naar een afschuwelijke kostschool op een verlaten eiland gestuurd. Het blijkt een plek waar kinderen heropgevoed worden maar ook zomaar voorgoed kunnen verdwijnen. Het eiland lijkt helemaal kaal te zijn, maar Faye, een echt boskind, voelt de kracht van bomen, ziet een reebok en hoort de bosuil. In dit superspannende verhaal weet Faye de kinderen van de school uiteindelijk tot een opstand te bewegen en vindt ze een magische plek op het eiland. Maar of ze op tijd hulp kunnen vinden om van het eiland te ontsnappen? Lees en huiver!
Oh en… ik las het mooiste woord in jaren: Defenestreren

Weer een mooi verhaal waar je je meteen verbonden mee voelt. Ook dit verhaal is niet persé mijn genre en toch las het weer als een trein. Ik blijf het willen om alle boeken van LS gelezen te hebben. De elementen van de natuur, vriendschap en moed zijn weer prachtig beschreven.

First audiobook of the year: another Lucy Strange story read by herself that I quite enjoyed. It has even more magical realism sprinkled in than her previous books, which is not really my thing, and I felt very neutral about the main characters, but the story is fun and I like how passionately Strange writes about nature.

Set on a fictional West Coast Scottish Island, this gothic mystery has a magical feel about it and covers themes of trauma, self esteem, ecology, isolation and friendship. If you enjoyed The Famous Five and The Little White Horse you might like to try this too.
While I was reading, I kept thinking about another wonderful book, "Finding the Mother Tree: Discovering the Wisdom of the Forest" by Suzanne Simard, so I was delighted to see her referenced in the acknowledgements as inspiration. As a Highlander, it was also good to see acknowledgement of the Highland Clearances in a book set in the region. Given the book deals with other heavy topics like war and trauma, I think a little more context might have been a great way to raise awareness of this to a wider audience.
Absolutely adored this book, and consumed it in 24 hours, which reaffirms my belief that adults should continue to read children's books.

January 2, 2025Faye wordt na een verschrikkelijke daad naar een tehuis voor kinderen met gedragsproblemen op een verlaten Schots eiland gestuurd. Ze heeft geen idee wat ze heeft gedaan, maar blijkbaar was het erg genoeg om als monster te worden weggezet.
Het tehuis is een oud klooster en voor de kinderen een gevangenis. Ze worden door middel van blauwe pillen onder de duim gehouden. Faye voelt zich vooral slecht en verward. Wat is er die avond toch gebeurd?
Het eerste (luister)boek van 2025 en het derde boek dat ik van Lucy Strange las. Ik vond het een onderhoudend en sfeervol verhaal. Het begin vond ik wat aan de truttige kant, maar als het verhaal eenmaal op stoom is, is het een mooi avontuur. Niet heel ingewikkeld of origineel, en het magische aspect had van mij wel meer aangezet kunnen worden.
Lucy Strange schrijft heel beeldend en ik zag alles voor me. Nu wil ik ook een Bruce. En naar Schotland.

Het eerste (luister)boek van 2025 en het derde boek dat ik van Lucy Strange las. Ik vond het een onderhoudend en sfeervol verhaal. Het begin vond ik wat aan de truttige kant, maar als het verhaal eenmaal op stoom is, is het een mooi avontuur. Niet heel ingewikkeld of origineel, en het magische aspect had van mij wel meer aangezet kunnen worden.
Lucy Strange schrijft heel beeldend en ik zag alles voor me. Nu wil ik ook een Bruce. En naar Schotland.

Vooruit, vijf sterren. De drie boeken die ik al had gelezen van Lucy Strange waren erg goed, deze vond ik nog wat beter.
Er is niets hips of moderns aan dit boek. En juist daarom leest het zo heerlijk weg. Je wordt onderdeel van een geïsoleerde gemeenschap in de jaren '20 van de 20e eeuw. Je moet het doen met wat er is: het weer, de natuur, een paar gebouwen en een handvol mensen. De klassieke vertelregels worden allemaal braaf opgevolgd, wat resulteert in een fantastisch verhaal vol mooie taal.
Spannend van het begin tot het eind, tikkeltje magisch, vol liefde voor bomen (en dat op een boomloos eiland) en met dappere personages.

Weer een echte Lucy Strange, zoals we gewend zijn, maar dit verhaal leest wat stroever. Het nawoord verklaard dit.
Het verhaal komt langzaam op gang, pas wanneer de dode prins tevoorschijn komt, krijgt het verhaal z'n vaart en wil je weten hoe het af gaat lopen. 3,5 ster.

Lucy Strange is echt een van mijn favoriete (kinderboeken)schrijvers. Het eiland aan de rand van de nacht is weer een parel van een verhaal (alleen de naam en omslag al). Een mysterie, spanning, een vleugje magie en een dappere hoofdrolspeelster - de ingrediënten van haar verhalen blijven hetzelfde maar het werkt elke keer.
Is dit haar beste werk? Dat denk ik niet maar hij komt zeker in mijn persoonlijke boekenkast te staan, naast al haar andere werk.

Het is al een tijdje geleden dat een boek mij zo in z'n greep heeft weten te houden. Een prachtig verhaal, met een vleugje magie en de innerlijke wilde, natuurlijke roep naar datgene waar alles in dit leven om draait.
Na een verschrikkelijk voorval wordt Faye door haar tante naar een eiland gestuurd met een bijzondere school. Een plek waar moeilijke kinderen heropgevoed worden. Op het eiland aangekomen doet Faye er alles aan om haar verdrongen herinneringen terug te winnen. Om te begrijpen wat er is gebeurd en te onderzoeken of zij daadwerkelijk een slecht kind is. Al snel ontdekt ze dat de school een duister geheim heeft, de leiding heeft een plan met de kinderen dat het daglicht niet kan verdragen. Ondertussen roept het eiland iets in haar wakker, alsof haar wilde kant steeds meer van zichzelf laat horen.
Lukt het Faye om de mysteries van het eiland, de school en zichzelf te ontrafelen?
Meer dan mooi, absoluut een aanrader om dit najaar te lezen. Maar wees gewaarschuwd, na het lezen van dit verhaal wil je het bos in en boek je hoogstwaarschijnlijk een tripje naar Schotland.

Een boek vol mysterie en emotie!
Lucy Strange is er opnieuw in geslaagd om mij mee te nemen naar een wereld vol mysterie en emotie in haar nieuwste boek ‘Het eiland aan de rand van de nacht’. Dit boek, gericht op jongere lezers maar zeker ook toegankelijk voor volwassenen, combineert een diepgaande verhaallijn in een sombere setting en met gelaagde personages. Het eindresultaat is opnieuw een boeiende jeugdroman die mij als lezer vanaf de eerste pagina wist in te pakken en mij niet meer losliet.
Het verhaal draait om Faye, een jong meisje dat aankomt op een geïsoleerd eiland na een ingrijpende gebeurtenis in haar leven. Haar geheugen is ernstig aangetast, waardoor ze weinig weet over wat haar naar dit vreemde oord heeft gebracht. Het eiland herbergt een kostschool die bedoeld is voor jongeren die zogenaamd een ernstige misstap hebben begaan. Voor Faye voelt de plek echter als een straf, maar al snel merk je als lezer dat er meer speelt dan op het eerste gezicht lijkt. I was lucky enough to be sent the standard paperback by Chicken House, who will publish this book on the 11th of April 2024 (three days away from the upload of this review!). The cover is a gorgeous wrap-around piece, depicting Auk Island and the school in a beautiful pastel, accented with pink foil, designed by Katie Hickey; it perfectly captures the whimsically gothic tone with subtle nods to the natural beauty of the setting. I find it visually pleasing that the “Strange World” books are all cohesive with spines in a matching style, as well as the decorative chapter headings. The first chapter can be read for free on the publisher’s website (along with the rest of their catalogue) or accessed by scanning the QR code below the blurb and has three words on the back to summarise the contents: thrilling, gothic and mystery.
My thoughts:
The Island at the Edge of Night was a masterfully executed gothic mystery, with a strong cast of characters, gorgeous writing and well-plotted twists, all seamlessly blended into a folkloric base with strong themes of found family, ethics/morality and the natural magic of the environment. The variable pace, short chapters and constantly evolving stakes from the carefully layered mystery made for an engaging read that perfectly balanced difficult themes (such as rejection, abandonment and mental illness). I would of course recommend it for fans of Strange’s previous works, but equally believe it would be perfect for readers of Sophie Anderson, Michelle Harrison and lovers of high-action detective books, such as Robin Steven’s Murder Most Unladylike Series.
I think the setting of the Auk Island, such as the Knife and its secrets, really made the novel shine, especially with the lush descriptions and how deeply connected everything was – from the hidden passageways to the tree roots. Every detail felt so purposeful and clever, such as the extinction of the namesake birds and how the island had previously been cleared of trees, but how nature endured anyhow. It was based in a post-wartime era, but managed to connect to many modern-day issues, such as climate change. I greatly enjoyed the way the novel was structured ...

Faye Fitzgerald has had a good life with her father while they were living out in the woods in 1932, but when the two had to move to the city to be with her Aunt Christina when her father struggled with issues related to being in the Great War, things did not go well. She's not sure exactly what happened, but seems to remember an axe and screaming. Now, she is being shunted off to a school on the remote Auk Island because she is "wicked". The school is run by Dr. and Mrs. Lightbody, who is called Nurse Violet, and has a small population of troubled students who are locked into their rooms at night to protect them from each other. The children are also give blue "vitamin" pills, and one of the first activities in which Faye and fellow passenger, American Boudicca Braithwaite, have to participate is a funeral for another student, Filiberto. Other students include Evie, Archie, and Lord Gordon, who is rumored to have killed his own brother. There are no trees on the island, which is hard for Faye, who really enjoys nature, and Faye soon uncovers the dastardly curriculum of the school, which seems to focus on removing "wicked" children from their families... and eventually eliminating them altogether! When she finds that Filiberto is actually still alive and living in hidden places in the school, the two team up to try to break loose from the Lightbody's. How can they possibily succeed?
Strengths: One of my own favorite books in middle school was Lois Duncan's Down a Dark Hall, so a mysterious school on a secluded island where the children are mistreated would have been one I would have enjoyed! Faye isn't quite sure why she is considered so wicked, and doesn't quite believe that her fellow students are, either. Boudicca in particular is a great character, and her brash insistence that she won't do unpleasant tasks gets her in trouble, but not before she puts up a fight. The setting is a character on its own, and Auk Island has some troubled history that Faye's father had studied. The post WWI setting is interesting, and boarding school stories have a lot of fans. The cover is absolutely fantastic, and I wanted to poke around the school (parts of which were a former abbey) myself!
Weaknesses: I'm not sure that Gothic mysteries will resonate with my students. When the Lemony Snicket books were popular twenty years ago, I might have purchased this, but perhaps this will resonate more with a British audience.
What I really think: This is a good choice for readers who want to sink into a Gothic mystery like Gemeinhart's Scar Island, Walker's Ash House, or Carter's The Winterbourne Home for Vengeance and Valor.

The early chapters will have readers immediately conjuring mysterious thoughts. The author creates a dark, creepy atmosphere through the setting and characters. The island always seems to be covered by dark clouds, rarely letting the shine break through. The desolate landscape is void of green plants, and animals are rarely seen. The Knife towers over everything else, and its secrets beckon to be discovered. Dr Lighter and Nurse Violet clearly don’t like the children under their care, and they use medication, mind games, and threats to make the students subservient. The kids have no way to escape since the doctor and nurse pay the captain’s salary to ferry the only boat to the island. All mail is read before it can be sent, isolating the students from all contact with the outside world.
What didn’t work as well:
It would be nice to know more about the other students, since they’re not a major part of the plot until the book’s last quarter. Boudicca is an especially interesting character, since she’s most defiant about the strict expectations. She won’t stop asking questions, speaks without permission, and refuses to follow orders. However, she disappears shortly after her arrival and isn’t heard from again until much later.

The real mystery involves the truth behind Faye’s amnesia, although astute readers will predict what happened. The story’s dark tone and Faye’s natural spirit are highlights of the book, and I recommend you check this book out for yourself.

Een mysterieus Schots eiland, een beetje magie, een school met “slechte” kinderen… Ziehier de ingrediënten voor het nieuwste boek van Lucy Strange, Het eiland aan de rand van de nacht. Dit boek was voor mij een eerste kennismaking met het werk van deze auteur, maar het smaakt zeker naar meer.
Faye wordt door haar tante naar een afgelegen eiland gestuurd omdat ze iets vreselijks heeft gedaan. Ze kan zich echter totaal niet herinneren wat. De school blijkt een kostschool voor “slechte” kinderen die wordt geleid door een bizar echtpaar.
Faye ontdekt echter dat het allemaal een bedrog is en een complot tegen de kinderen. Zijzelf en de andere leerlingen zijn in gevaar en terwijl Faye haar eigen krachten en de geheimen van het eiland ontdekt, probeert ze zichzelf en haar medestudenten te redden.
Het verhaal is bijzonder intrigerend en spannend, het houdt je in de ban en maakt je steeds nieuwsgierig naar het volgende hoofdstuk. Er zit genoeg variatie in het verhaal en veel boeiende personages die je beetje bij beetje leert kennen. En is iedereen wel even eerlijk?
De auteur bewijst ook over veel fantasie te beschikken en samen met een vleugje magie creëert dit een wereld waarin alles mogelijk is.
In het boek is ook veel plaats en ruimte voor de bijzondere band met de natuur en vooral voor de theorie dat bomen via hun wortels met elkaar kunnen communiceren. Enkele van de personages geloven daar sterk in en je voelt ook dat de auteur er onderzoek naar gedaan heeft. Ze vermeldt achteraan ook een aantal boeken die haar daarbij geholpen hebben, waaronder het boek van Peter Wohlleben, Het verborgen leven van bomen.
De cover van het boek ademt echt de sfeer van het verhaal uit. Zoals de auteur in haar nawoord zelf zegt, is het omslag “tegelijkertijd verrukkelijk onheilspellend, gothic, prachtig en magisch”.
Lucy Strange is een van de belangrijkste jeugdboekenauteurs in het Verenigd Koninkrijk en wordt ook in België en Nederlands alsmaar bekender. Ze woont met haar partner en zoontje op het platteland van Kent. Voor ze professioneel schrijfster werd, werkte ze vijftien jaar als lerares Engels.
Ik ga alvast op zoek naar een van haar eerdere boeken om te zien of ze even goed en boeiend zijn als Het eiland aan de rand van de nacht.

Maybe I was wicked, deep down. Or maybe I had been called wicked so many times, it had conjured a dark magic within me. When the same word falls from different mouths, over and over again, it becomes harder to dismiss, harder to ignore; it becomes a kind of truth.
Sad to say this is my least favourite Lucy Strange book. There were bits that I liked, such as the focus on nature and ancient trees and root systems, and Lord Gordon's backstory. But the Gothic vibes just weren't vibing for me, and overall this didn't have the magic and warmth and heart of her other novels.

And another middle grade book makes the "Why middle grade books are awesome to read" list! I genuinely love how easy these are to read, while still being able to speak about a variety of topics and go quite deep & emotional as well. Yes, it can be a bit predictable at times. And yes, all the loose ends will be tied up in a lovely and very clear manner. But I think that's part of the charm that these books have.
The Island of the Night was an exciting book to read. Nature, folklore and magic make up the roots of this wonderful adventure (inside joke there for those who have read the book). Despite it being a fantasy book, it felt incredibly realistic.
The author did a great job writing an easy to understand and engaging story. The characters are lovely! (Most of them at least). It's so easy to connect to them. They are funny, quirky and sometimes even outrageously bold. They are children. And they are truly written like that. It's great! The storyline had mystery and tension. As a kid, I would've probably experienced these two things much more deeply, because as a 25-year-old human, I was able to see where things were likely headed towards. However, that didn't spoil the fun. It can be relaxing to read something that you don't really have to think about too deeply.
The love for Scotland and mother nature is tangible. The setting in which the story takes place is easy to imagine. The author draws your attention to it very subtly and sometimes very obviously. And both were fun! I could tell that she wants you to feel connected to nature and truly care for it. And I think she succeeded! In the afterword, she also talks about the organisation treesforlife. Lovely!
I'm sad that it's over. But I can't wait to find out what my next middle grade adventure will be like ✨
