The fourth book in the Harper Adams Mystery series.
When Harper and James Malcolm go after the man who replaced James's mentor, they uncover a criminal empire far darker than they imagined—one built on human trafficking and ruthless power. But exposing the truth could cost them everything.
GAH! I am struggling to know what to rate this one! I really did enjoy the story. The relationship between Harper and James is such a stickler, though. I just don’t feel an ounce of chemistry between these two main characters and that affects the entire reading experience. They started out as “enemies” and somewhere along the way they fell hard for each other, I just never saw when, or how! I saw step A and step D, but missed B and C. And I love James, so it is especially frustrating to see him say he is all in with Harper but not actually feel it.
I enjoyed the previous books in this series but struggled to get through this one. The story dragged through the middle third of the book, if not more. It felt very repetitive to me, with Harper and James having the same fight over and over again and asking potential sources/witnesses the same questions without much success. It didn't help that the sources were constantly "surprised" by Harper's questions. She wasn't exactly coming up with anything earth shattering. The connections she made were often stupidly obvious and didn't advance the investigation much. It's kind of a miracle that she and James managed to crack the case at all.
I'm not sure I will continue with the series. As for this book, I definitely would not recommend it for anyone who hasn't already read the earlier books. The background/context in those stories is needed to understand many of the events in this book.
ETA: I don't know why Goodreads is saying I read an advance copy. That isn't true. I pre-ordered the Kindle edition and read it shortly after release.
Lost in the Dark is the fourth book in the Harper Adams series and the best one for sure. I’ve been waiting for this one forever because I’ve got to see the human side of James Malcom finally! I’ve been a fan of him since he first appeared in Rose Gardner series and I always believed in what we’ve discovered in this book about him. Harper and James are the perfect duo as a team and a great couple who balances out each other. I loved the dynamics of their relationship in the both - relationship and the way they work together to uncover the criminal world to bring it down. In this book we see the growth of Harper’s character as she is reevaluating herself and the relationship with James. To see James opening up is a huge bonus for his fans. Denise Grover Swank never disappoint her readers always keeping us on the edge from the first page to the end, guessing the next twist on the story, hoping for the best and being ready for the worst outcome. You will have to find it out yourself and I can tell you will love it as much as I do.
This book was an intense and emotional read that really pulled me in from the beginning. Harper is trying to figure out what her new normal looks like after everything she’s lost, and watching her wrestle with how far she’s willing to go for the truth was compelling. She carries so much pain and guilt, and she truly doesn’t believe she’s lovable or wanted, which made her journey feel even more heartbreaking and real.
James has grown so much since I first met him in the Rose Gardner series. I loved seeing this side of him. He’s open, honest, and incredibly patient with Harper, even while dealing with his own injuries and secrets. The way he supports her while still challenging her choices added so much depth to their relationship.
This story definitely deals with some heavy topics, including trafficking and the dark power of a criminal family, which makes the stakes feel incredibly high throughout the book. The tension of being on the run, mixed with Harper’s determination to uncover the truth about her mother, kept me turning the pages.
Overall, this was a gripping and emotional installment. It’s dark, intense, and filled with difficult choices, but it also shows growth, resilience, and the complicated path toward justice. I’m really looking forward to seeing what comes next for Harper and James.
I received a free copy of this book and am voluntarily leaving a review.
I still don’t buy the romance. Also, Blackstone Capital is the largest alternative asset manager in the world!!?? Did DGS not google them before she used their name?
This was so good! Couldn’t put it down all day! It’s sad to know that, while the characters in this book are fictional, the situations are actually happening in the world today. This series is addictive and I can’t wait for book 5 to come out this Fall.
Read the bonus chapter! Especially if you’re a Rose Gardner and Mason Deveraux fan like me.
After Luck of the Devil, I couldn’t wait to dive into this book and it absolutely delivered! Harper and James make an incredible team, and their dynamic is both compelling and entertaining. I loved that they’re written as flawed, realistic characters who are forced to confront their pasts while moving forward together. Watching them grow, challenge one another, and slowly heal was one of my favorite parts of the story. Their journey kept me fully invested from start to finish. I can’t wait to see what comes next for them!
First off, you must have read the previous Harper Adams books before reading this one, otherwise it really won't make any sense.
Harper and James are on a mission to uncover the criminal dealings that Harper's mother collected evidence on. They are on the run from Gerry Knox and his crew after having a big shoot out in the previous book. While on the run Harper is dealing with being newly sober, coming to terms with the fact that she's no longer a detective with the Little Rock PD, and exploring the way she's feeling about James "Skeeter" Malcolm. Oh did I mention that the criminal dealings also include trafficked girls? While Harper definitely has a lot on her mind, that doesn't stop her from wanting to save these girls and get another criminal off the streets - in any way possible.
James is dealing with his own issues. Not only does he have a concussion from said shootout, he's also trying to figure out how to blend his old life with his current life and let Harper see the real him. James has his own secrets and he struggles with how much he can and should share with Harper, especially secrets that may help with their current situation.
I loved seeing Harper's growth in this book and her realization that she no longer has to play by the LRPD's rules. I absolutely loved seeing James's growth within himself in this book. I've been around since 28 1/2 wishes and seeing James from then until now is amazing. Harper helps James bring out the best in himself - his heart you would say. He's always had it, but in his line of work it can be deadly to show it. James helps bring out Harpers inner bad-a**. She's always had it, but she kind of lost it after everything that happened with the LRPD. These 2 understand each other in ways that not many others can.
I loved the book and can't wait to see what happens next. You definitely don't want to miss out on the bonus chapter! There is no spice in this book, which was a bit of a bummer to me because I love James, but it's not a deal breaker for me.
Another hit out of the ball park! #4 is the best one yet. This one has all the feels... laugh, cry, smile, cringe, happy, sad, relief and disgust. It's an emotional rollercoaster dealing with human trafficking of really young girls for prostitution. And dealing with human trafficking of girls forced into a life of servitude. It's tough to read and my heart broke for them. James works on his Federal deal, being honest with Harper and keeping her in the loop. Harper works on her alcoholism and self insecurities. Harper undercover in disguise is great. And, she's surprisingly jealous of James' past relationship with Rose. (I was actually Team Joe and I'm glad Rose is happy with him.) James and Harper do manage to work together, most of the time. Harper does have a problem following directions, though. I admit that I had a hard time meshing crime boss Skeeter with soft hearted James. He's so comforting and talkative! Skeeter does show up when he needs to. Amen to that! I do think James and Harper are well matched. Both are tougher than most people could ever be or ever want to be. That goes especially for Harper when she is hung naked on a hook, tortured for hours and then stabbed! Both bring a lot of baggage into the relationship. They help each other with it all. James is great at helping Harper with her alcoholism. And, it's a sexy love story. Really great sex, too! Though personally, I don't think I could think about sex when people were trying to find me and kill me. Neither James nor Harper have uttered the L word yet, but I'm sure it's coming. At least, I hope it is... You really need to read the first three books to understand everything going on. And, don't forget the bonus chapter. Is Mason ever going to get over his love for Rose and his hatred for Skeeter...
I'm really looking forward to the next book. I hope Harper finds the answers she's looking for. I hope James gets the Feds off his back for good. I hope we hear about Jed, Neely Kate, Rose and Joe. I hope Carter has a life aside from being Skeeter's lawyer! I hope they all live happily ever after.

I just finished reading and my whole body is buzzing along with my brain. Nicole Grover Swank has a way of writing about the dark underside of the human mind that gets under my skin. If it wasn’t for the way she writes her characters I’d probably feel to weak to stomach the gruesome things going on in her stories. I’m the kind of person who has a hard time reading about sufferings that can (and most probably are) happen in reality. But even if it’s hard to read some parts I am sucked in and walking along the characters through the story. And I want to keep reading long after the book (well the books actually) ends. I was #teamjames from the beginning, sensing something more underneath the crime lord persona while seeing him through Rose Gardener’s eyes in a previous series. Now we see him through Harper’s eyes and though she has a hard time trusting his feelings for her I don’t. We learn more about him, but we still don’t know everything. James Malcom keeps himself closed of even to his closest partners, like Carter, but there are cracks opening in his armour when he’s with Harper. Since Harper herself is far from an open book this is big. I love how these cracks creates a softness between Harper and James who are both jaded and suspicious. ”We balance each other out” James tells Harper, and isn’t is so. I mourned the ending of James and Rose, but James and Harper is something completely different. This is a crime mystery, not a romance, but the relationship is evolving in lots of ways in this book and I want to see it developing further in the next book just as much as I want to join Harper in her pursuit of justice. Denise Grover Swank is an amazing writer, may she write many, many more books.
I received a free copy of this book and am voluntarily leaving a review.
Denise Grover Swank has done it again. Lost in the Dark captivated me from the very first page and refused to let go. The Harper Adams suspense I’ve come to expect is all here—layered mystery, constant tension, and those unexpected twists that catch you off guard when you think you’ve figured it out.
This story feels darker and more intense, and I loved every second of it. The stakes are high, the danger feels real, and the emotional weight hits hard. Harper continues to grow in ways that make her feel authentic—strong yet vulnerable, determined yet conflicted. I appreciate that she’s not perfect. She’s fierce, flawed, and fighting for what she believes is right.
I want to talk about Harper and James. I truly love their relationship. I’ve been a fan of James since the Rose Gardner series, and it’s enjoyable to see his dynamic with Harper. The tension, loyalty, and the way they challenge each other—everything just works. Their connection has real depth, and I find myself rooting for them more with each book. They’ve both faced so much, and watching them navigate trust and partnership amid chaos adds even more to the story.
Fans of the Rose Gardner series will recognize some names mentioned in the book.
The pacing is fast, the suspense is relentless, and just when I thought I knew where the story was headed… I didn’t. Classic Denise Grover Swank.
If you love romantic suspense filled with grit, unexpected twists, and a relationship you can’t help but root for, this book absolutely delivers. I’m already counting down to the next Harper Adams installment because I need to know what happens next.
**Note**
At the end of the book, there are two links: one is for a bonus chapter, and the other leads to a chapter for fans of the Rose Gardner series. Unfortunately, neither link worked for me, which was disappointing.
This latest installment of Harper Adams complicated messy life was another twisty, could not put it down story. And oh does it pack an emotional punch - expect to feel all the things reading this. Harper is a disgraced ex-detective who has moved back to her small hometown to start her new life as a PI. She’s moved past the shooting she was involved in, has accepted that she is an alcoholic and has recently stopped drinking. The book picks up right after the last book ends, Harper saved bar owner and former crime boss James Malcolm’s life and made a powerful enemy of the Knox family in the process. Now she and James are in hiding while they try to destroy the Knox family’s criminal operation. Harper’s emotional pain (and James’) is frequently palpable as they follow the clues and unravel the complicated criminal operation. I love that Harper and Malcolm are not white knight kind of protagonists, they have all kinds of gray mixed in with their goodness which makes them more likable and relatable heroes. They are definitely bruised but not broken. One of this author’s greatest strengths is in creating three dimensional characters who are neither all good nor all bad but nevertheless are so real, relatable, and likeable that it is easy to root for them. Harper and James are two such characters. And both of them are doing some major baggage unpacking with this story as their trust and relationship continues to deepen. I am loving this series, Harper’s phoenix from the ashes character arc and the deepening of her relationship with James. I can’t wait to read the next book on the series.
Lost in the Dark is the fourth book in the Harper Adam’s series and I am SO glad it didn’t end yet! Harper and James are easily my favorite two characters, and this series has become one of my top reads! Lost in the Dark went a little, well, dark this time though. Human trafficking and police corruption were major plot points and I believe this author did a wonderful job of being respectful and honest while telling a fictional story and keeping readers entertained. This is something I also love about with Harper’s character. The portrayal of her struggle with alcohol and her insecurities leaching into her relationship are so well written. I think we’ve all acted and felt the same way she does, and so even if we’re not crime stopping PI’s, we still feel connected to this kick a$$ heroine! And her relationship with James is perfection - he is the ultimate book MAN! I don’t know how I managed to finish the book with all the swooning I was doing. I’ve been Team James (from the Rose Gardner series) since day 1 and THIS is the version of him I always believed in, and I couldn’t be happier about how his story has turned out.
And though we didn’t get to read about a big showdown in this book, it was still impossible to put down. The writing, the characters, the emotion it all draws you in and keeps you turning page after page. Seriously, just read it, it’s wonderful!
Harper and James are finally together. Officially, romantically spicey together! I am a very happy reader about it. James is slowly earning Harper’s trust, and together they make a good team. Harper remains a total badass, with tough edges that complement James’s intensity.
The story picks up right where the third book left off, as Harper continues searching for the people responsible for her mother’s death and uncovering what nefarious deeds they are up to. That investigation uncovers a much darker operation, a human trafficking ring. Harper and James work together to rescue the victims and track down the leader behind the organization.
This was a very satisfying read. I particulary enjoyed how the author let us see glimpses of James’s point of view throughout the book. In previous novels he was often mysterious, sometimes rude, and his motives could be difficult to understand. While he’s still the tough, brash “knight in black armor,” we also get to see his vulnerability, ust as we do with Harper. Watching both characters evolve has been one of my favorite parts of the series.
Fortunately, it seems Harper and James still have some unfinished business to take care of…which means we’ll get to see them again very soon in installment #5. Yay! 😃
OH MY GOD, finally!! If you’ve been following James Malcolm since his days in the Rose Gardner series, you know exactly why I’ve been vibrating with excitement for this book. Lost in the Dark is hands down the best installment in the Harper Adams series so far. I have always been a total sucker for the "former crime boss" vibe, but seeing the human side of James in this book? My heart can’t take it. For everyone who believed there was more to him than just his cold exterior, this is the payoff we’ve been waiting for. Seeing him finally open up and deal with his past insecurities made me love him even more. The chemistry between Harper and James is just... chef’s kiss. They are the ultimate power duo. I love how they balance each other out while tearing through the criminal underworld. Harper’s growth in this one is massive, too; watching her reevaluate everything while they hunt for the truth kept me glued to the pages. Denise Grover Swank really outdid herself here. It’s intense, it’s gritty, and it hits on some heavy, real-life truths that stay with you. I was on the edge of my seat guessing the twists until the very last second. If you haven't started this series yet, what are you doing?! Grab it immediately. You won't regret it!
This book showed a lot of growth for Harper. He is handling not only trying to stay sober, but finally seeing her father for what he is and acknowledging her growing feelings for James.
James too has see a lot of growth. I’m not saying he is a cuddly teddy bear, but he too is acknowledging his feelings for Harper and opening up more. His character in the book is veering left from the one in the Rose Gardner books. We always knew there was more to him and now we know for certain.
This book had me feeling all the feels and I definitely needed time to process it. The character development and the story are amazing, as usual for this author. You need to read the prior books to know what is going on, but why wouldn’t you want to?? This entire series is so good!
The storyline goes a little on the dark side with human trafficking and police corruption. One is resolved by the end and I’m sure we will see the other in the next book, especially with that bonus scene at the end. I’ll say it again… love love love me some James.
Lost in the Dark is the 4th Harper Adams Mystery novel. This series needs to be read in the correct order or you will miss key information. Harper and James are in hiding after a big shoot out with Knox's men in the last book. They have the files Harper's mother had been hiding and want to bring down people using the information for which she was killed. But they need to play this smarter - Harper is newly sober and James is trying to recover from a concussion. They have to learn to trust one another as they uncover sex trafficking and police corruption.
I have been Team James since he and Rose started having feelings for each other in the Rose Gardner series and honestly wasn't thrilled with him and Harper at first. But Harper has grown a lot as a character and now they work well together. Plus, she brings out the softer side that we got to see with Rose - possibly even more so, making me 100% root for them. One day, I'm going to learn not to start a DGS mystery on a weeknight - it's just too hard to put down! I can not wait for the next installment!
If getting lost in the dark means finding James Malcolm, yes, please!! Just when I think I cannot love her and her characters even more, Denise Grover Swank creates the perfect broke girl for my favorite bad boy. The story begins with the continuation of James’s and Harper’s night together. Their heartbreak and the darkness they have lived through binds them together unlike other relationships either have had. It turns out that sometimes you have to have a little darkness to defeat the darkness. I love the way that DGS intertwines real issues and horrors such as drugs and human trafficking into her stories. It gives her stories just the right amount of urgency and twists to keep the plot at an exciting pace and believable outcome. I cannot believe how talented and prolific Denise Grover Swank is. I would read any book she wrote!!.
I received a free copy of this book and am voluntarily leaving a review.
I really enjoyed Lost in the Dark!! I was so excited to be back in Harper's world again. The writing was spectacular and while it was an emotional story in parts, it made sense and progressed very eloquently. Regarding the investigation itself, there were things that I could not guess at all and I absolutely love when the book I'm reading is able to stump me like that.
Also, I loved the character development in Lost in the Dark. Both Harper and James (ESPECIALLY James) are characters I have loved in the past but but in this book, both of them had a lot of personal growth and tried working on themselves more and I loved seeing that side of them. I think both were in situations they were not used to and seeing them adapt was really great. I love them together, both as partners and as a couple.
I am extremely eager to read book 5 of Harper and James and any more that follow! This is a great series and Denise Grover Swank is a fantastic author.
I loved this book. It had so much happening throughout, there was not a second to get bored. I love how James and Harper's relationship is turning out. Harper really is more suited for James than Rose ever was. I see now why they didn't end up together. I love how we got to see more into Harper's life as a cop by talking with her old informants. I hated seeing James suffer so much with his concussion throughout the book, but I feel like it gave way to show how on her game Harper was. There is so much that I want to say about this book but I don't want to give too much away. I will say this story is darker, and more violent than some of Denise's other stories. There is a lot of romance throughout though, you really see the relationship between Harper and James bloom. You also still see Harper getting a hold of her sobriety. The ending was great, and makes me so ready for the next installment.
Let me start off by saying I LOVE this series. Every. Single. Book. Gets. Better. And. Better.
Ok, now that THAT is off my chest. Let me say that I rarely read books out of series order. This is my first and I have now done it with another series too. (Go Dez & Sully…IYKYK.) That being said, it’s not taking anything away from this series. It has only fueled me to go back and read the other books by this author. I’m a big reader. And Denise has very quickly become a favorite. Not only is she one hell of a writer but she is a good human. ❤️
I’m not a spoiler gal. So I will just say that Harper & Malcolm are such a great team. Both damaged people with a boat load of baggage trying their best. If you are a fan of fast (like rocket fast as times) pace and mystery with a great cast of characters then you need to read. 🏃♀️🏃♀️🏃♀️
I'm really enjoying this series. However, I would be lying if I said I wasn't a little hesitant to see where this is going simply because I'm still holding on to the James Malcolm of the Rose Gardner series. I get it now. If you're in the same boat as I was, please know that this book does give at least a little bit of closure to that.
Overall, I really like the raw, real way that Swank writes the character of Harper. She really gets into Harper's head when it comes to her alcoholism, trauma, and emotional responses. Things aren't always rainbows and butterflies, which I actually appreciate.
Its been interesting to see how not only Harper, but James have changed throughout these few books. I will continue to read anything she puts out!.
I received a free copy of this book and am voluntarily leaving a review.
I swear this series just keeps getting better. Lost in the Dark had me stressed in the best way possible. This book picks up right where the chaos left off, and it does not slow down! Harper and James are on the run after an explosive showdown, trying to uncover the trafficking ring and the criminal empire Harper’s mother died exposing. The stakes feel higher than ever, and Denise Grover Swank knows how to write suspense that actually makes your heart race, and this one felt nonstop from page one. The trust issues, the chemistry, the secrets…it’s messy and intense and I loved every second of it! It’s darker, yes, but handled thoughtfully. The dynamic, the emotion, the tension…I couldn’t put it down. Denise truly knows how to deliver a story that keeps you hooked!
A confession before my review, James has always been my favorite, since Rose first met him. I'm absolutely 100% totally biased in saying that I loved and gleefully devoured this. And also it's the best one. My favorite one. I've been waiting for James to be fully seen , to find his smile, his hope again. He's had it hard and deserves it more than most anyone.
TEAM JAMES FOREVER BUT NOW I'M ALSO TEAM HARPER FOREVER
Harper having his continued support as she's learning to not drink her problems away is so impactful. It's steady, quiet but also screams, "I've got you and you're not alone"
Harper is such a bad ass and she's right there with James as my favorite. I love seeing people fight for and WITH the ones the care about. I'm so freaking excited for the next one!
Another incredible mystery adventure with Harper and James. I loved this so much. I enjoyed the growing relationship between the two. They work so well together. Both are trying to be better versions of themselves for each other. I loved how they easily go into character while working undercover. I enjoyed seeing how they unraveled the mystery. Harper and James are a dynamic duo. With the help of the amazing Carter Hale they try to save the victims and punish the criminals. This story shows more of a darker side of the criminal world. All of the characters are interesting and believable. Denise Grover Swank is a master. I hope it won't be too long before we get the next book in this addicting series.
This series is my newest favorite of DGS. Back in the same world that Rose was in, but in a new location… Harper Adams and James Malcom are pure fire. I love that James has grown so much as a character after seeing him in Rose’s series.
He treats Harper with respect. He trusts her. And there’s much more maturity between James and Harper than Rose and Malcolm ever had.
I just absolutely felt back in love with this world and it felt like coming home. The mystery. The suspense. The action. The spice. I was completely immersed from the very beginning.
For all the Rose lovers out there, you absolutely need to dive into Harper’s world.
Harper & James are trying to bring down a terrible criminal empire by going undercover and using all the resources they can. They make such a great team and trust their instincts that lead them in their investigation.
Lost in the Dark is the fourth installment of the Harper Adams Mysteries series. This series is interconnected and must be read in order. However, the author does a good job of recapping the previous book to catch you up to speed. There is plenty of action to keep you on your toes and wondering what will happen next. In fact, the action keeps up a steady speed all the way until the last chapter, never a dull moment. Harper and James continue to have great chemistry and this was one of my main draws to see how their relationship would develop. I got a thrill to discover past characters from other connected series may play a part in the next book. Don’t skip the bonus to get a peak into their appearance! I look forward to more from Harper and James!!
Whew! Talk about a wild ride! I am a huge fan of everything that Denise writes, and somehow each book keeps getting better and better. I have been a James Malcolm fan since the Rose Gardner series. While I was thrilled to see him appear in a new series, I was hesitant about him being paired up with someone other than Rose. Well, Harper is just what we all needed. I loved the scene where he tells Harper about the one woman he loved back in Fenton County, and that we really get to see his softer side. Harper has grown so much since the beginning of the series. I love seeing her strength and seeing her overcome her demons. Thank you for another amazing book. I will be (not so) patiently waiting for book 5.

Lost in the Dark is another great addition to Harper’s series, and probably my favorite one yet. The mystery plot is intense, high stakes, and full of twists. The relationship that continues to develop between Harper and James is also fantastic. As a long time James Malcom fan, I love getting to know James in this way and seeing him develop as a character. Harper is also growing so much and I love that she’s not a perfect character without flaws. The banter between Harper and James is great and I am enjoying getting to experience them growing together, while making such a great team. I was on the edge of my seat throughout the novel and couldn’t get enough! Highly recommend!
