"We had survived so much, my family and I. Whatever challenges lay ahead, I knew we would face them together."

The book begins with the author's life: recounting an early childhood in an idyllic town in rural Bosnia, surrounded by the warmth of familial love. Through the first chapter, we see how peaceful and serene life can be. We see various festivals and community events, we see a snapshot into a more traditional way of life, and we see the world through the eyes of an innocence.

Then, there is a crack in the tranquility. The adults start whispering about an incoming war. The children, unaware of the implications, try to preserve their dewy-eyed youthfulness. But as the conflict nears and rations become more scarce, we follow the author as he must leave his childhood behind to survive.

According to a resolution by the European Parliament, the Bosnian Genocide is the biggest war crime in Europe since WWII. Despite this, it is often viewed in America as a historical footnote of 20th century violence. With so much other conflict (two World Wars, the Korean War, the Vietnam War, and the Gulf War, just to name a few), the conflict in Bosnia is unfortunately overlooked.

That is, until The Empty Chocolate Wrapper.

On paper, tens of thousands of Bosnians lost their lives in the conflict. Can human life be reduced to a number, though? This book, in its recounting of painful events, paints a picture of the true loss due to this conflict. We see firsthand how the war destroyed so much.

At the same time, however, the book highlights how triumphant the human spirit can be. Even in the darkest times, as the author narrowly escapes death, we see a resilience that motivates and encourages. The author's inner-strength, forged by the love of family and the furnace of war, permeates through the book. The reader will walk away from this book with both a greater understanding of the tragedy that occurred in Bosnia, as well as a greater appreciation of the human soul.

The Empty Chocolate Wrapper is a heartfelt and deeply human story that made me stop and reflect on the little moments that shape who we are. The writing is warm and the pacing allows readers to fully immerse themselves in the narrative.
What I loved most is how the book balances lightness and depth — it’s easy to read, but it carries a powerful message about savoring life and finding meaning in unexpected places. I personally didn't know much about the Bosnian Genocide but I appreciate how the book sheds light on such an important part of history through a compassionate lens. This book is a must read!

This book was a beautifully written and incredibly moving account of this man’s childhood and his family’s and people’s experiences. The strength to not only live through such atrocities at such a young age, but also to reflect on how they shaped him as an adult, is reflected in every page. The moments of joy and connection amidst the trauma of life during war and relocation were so powerful. My heart aches for the little boy who lost out on so many childhood experiences most of us take for granted. I would recommend this book to anyone, especially those who may be needing a reminder to find their empathy, compassion, and humanity.
