Tam O Shanter if the MMCs were lovely and not blatant misogynists. A perfect first read for the spooky season. Graveyards and Ghosts and a town cursed by its history.
I loved the tension and dread that were built as the story progressed. A few sections were a little choppy but didn't detract from how fun the story was. It felt real, I have many questions and looking forward to a series? Please!
Big thank you to @Stephs_Creepy_Reads on tiktok for the ARC through the October Indie Tron campaign. Can't wait for my next read and inhaling the rest of Kristals work. Thank you Ladies!
Not many books creep me out but I found this really atmospheric and eerie. Loved the folklore in the book. Not my normal gruesome read, I enjoyed the way this story built up. Creep, spooky and very apt for spooky season. Thank you @stephscreepyreads on TikTok and thank you for the ARC
A Mortician’s Shadow, by Kristal Shanahan, takes small town horror up a notch. In the small, unassuming town of Stull, Kansas, lies a ruined church and a graveyard legendary for its connection to the occult. New to town, funeral home owner Justin feels a strange compulsion to the dilapidated property. Soon, he is plagued with strange visions, whispered sounds, and death that hits too close to home. Determined to solve the mystery of the graveyard and what is happening to him, Justin takes a deep dive into the lore of his new hometown, but what he finds may drive him further into the already suffocating despair he feels.
Shanahan’s ability to build incredibly atmospheric dread absolutely shines in this novella. She draws you into the mystery surrounding Justin in such a way you’ll want to finish this in one sitting. If you aren’t familiar with the legend of the Stull Cemetery, it’s a real place said to hold a gate to hell. While Shanahan’s story is a fictionalized fresh take, she manages to capture the same mystery and allure of the local folk tales. This one is a perfect addition to your Halloween TBR!
Full of slow-burn tension, A Mortician’s Shadow is full of folklore and occult mystery. The atmosphere is beautifully conjured, with great imagery that will have you feeling flames licking at your skin, and hearing whispers in your ear. The story slowly drip-feeds the occult entity, until the explosive conclusion sends you reeling. I appreciated the amount of research that Kristal has clearly put into this: from the legends of Stahl cemetery to due process in a mortuary, there is no aspect that doesn’t have some level of detail included to add to the realism. The only reason I have knocked off a star was because at times I felt the dialogue was a little stiff and it brought me out of the story a little, but that is a personal quibble. Kristal is going from strength to strength, and I can’t wait to read more from her.
This was a fairly strong and enjoyable story. Among the better elements here comes from the solid setup that generates the kind of fun starting point for a genuinely unnerving atmosphere within this one. The small-town atmosphere, full of secrets and whispers about what happened in the graveyard in town, soon starts a series of interactions with a strange spirit that makes the fascination with the graveyard even more impactful. There’s a lot to like with how it slowly unfolds about the true origin of the haunted nature which helps generate a sense of dread with how he gets involved in a more intense and dark mystery, which comes together rather well once the action picks up towards the end when a sense of the occult takes centerstage as a reasoning for the hauntings in the area. With how in-depth and detailed it is when it all comes together, involving a genuine-sounding small-town story that gets revealed, this makes everything even more likable as it all builds to a logical conclusion.
That this one is such a slow-burning style, taking quite a while building up the atmosphere of the town, the secret connections with the local graveyard, and how he ties into everything, interpreting the visions he has along the way, might be the one lone issue here. The intention to build up the sense of atmosphere within here makes this one take a slightly off-putting approach, where it’s so light on action at this expense that it can be a bit of a struggle to get into, even at this brief length. The way it starts to build its mystery, from the visions and whispers trying to lead him away from the cemetery to the deep investigation that uncovers the truth about what’s going on, is immensely deliberate which does help unravel everything at the pace it does, but there’s also the fact that there’s always something being done to enhance the atmosphere which helps overcome that sense of dragged-out style to the writing that could easily be seen as too slow for some.
A Mortician’s Shadow by Kristal Shanahan ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️(4.5 rounded up) Justin moves to a small town to work as a mortician. He quickly learns that the local cemetery holds more than just buried bodies. He finds the local legends of this cemetery interesting, but he begins to see shadows and feels things are haunting him. This story has great mystery, suspense and intrigue. I was sucked into the twisty plot and wanted to keep reading on for answers.
This book is very well written and has detailed imagery. It helped with the intensity of the creep factor.
Thank you to Kristal Shanahan for an arc of this awesome book! This is my first book from this author and I can’t wait to read more! *It comes out October 17th. I recommend checking this out for the spooky season!*
I was kindly sent this as an ARC for the Indie-Tron event.
We follow Justin, a mortician in a small town during Halloween. Creepy things start happening slowly, lights are flickering and finding random cold spots. Justin is completely drawn to the local graveyard then he starts hearing voices and seeing figures.
Justin frustrated me because one minute he’s hearing voices and seeing strange goings on and the next he’s like ok moving on and acting like nothing happened literally seconds before. It took a long time for him to believe anything was happening, but unsure if he actually did. I did find some parts a bit confusing. A lot of going to the graveyard, and hearing things to suddenly everything is happening all at once. It felt like a big jump. And nothing ever came of the guys in the SUV’s, they just sorta showed up then stopped trying to help.
The ending was ok, I just wanted more everything. More backstory, more gore. I did enjoy the idea of the novel and like that It is a slow burn. This is definitely a spooky season read 3✨
A small town with a cursed past. A mortician that wants to investigate. A shadow that won't leave him alone.
If you're looking for a creepy read with all three of these, look no further.
Justin is a mortician who recently moved to the town of Stahl. He wants to investigate the graveyard in town, and being followed by a suspicious black SUV isn't deterring him from looking into it. But then he starts seeing things. Shadows out of the corners of his eyes. Bodies in his morgue sitting up and screaming. Lights flickering in his house. Something that wants him. Can he find out what's going on before something horrible happens to him?
There were some genuinely creepy moments in this novella, and it's a great read for spooky season. Make sure you grab this one today!
A Mortician’s Shadow is a chilling and atmospheric read that slowly pulls you into the mystery surrounding the town of Stahl. Justin’s curiosity about an old church and whispers of witches quickly turns into a terrifying experience filled with flickering lights, shadows, and an overwhelming sense of dread. As the eerie voices calling “join us” follows him everywhere, the suspense builds until you’re left questioning what’s real and what isn’t. This is a great read for fans of slow-burn horror and supernatural suspense!
A young mortician comes to a small town, only to find a dark presence looming over the residents. Drawn to an old cemetery and the ruins of a church beside it, will he be able to defeat the evil and protect the people he's grown to love?
Overall, I found this book enjoyable. The story held me throughout, wondering what was happening and where it would leave. The writing is very descriptive, I could definitely picture the small town in which the story takes place.
Kristal Shanahan's story will keep keep you guessing from beginning to end.
This book is slow burn heaven, with the story wonderfully unfolding as it it progresses. It is jam packed with tropes I love- from dark, delightful whispers, a spooky old cemetery, disturbing local history, and a creature that endlessly stalks his prey. Kristal has a really enjoyable phrasing and colloquialism I enjoy reading, which makes her story really flow. Some of the dialogue is a little stiff and stilted at times, but otherwise a fun read.
I read A Mortician’s Shadow by Kristal Shanahan this weekend and I’m obsessed. It’s got a creepy cemetery, local legends, and that delicious kind of spooky atmosphere that sticks to you long after you’ve closed the book. You can tell she did her research because the details really shine, grounding the story in real history while still giving you goosebumps. If you love haunted history, ghostly chills, and a story that feels both eerie and authentic, this one belongs on your shelf. 👻🌙✨
“We live and we die in the shadows, but darkness always wins”
This book was dark and twisty. I never could have guessed the twist. If you like spooky, dark, Halloween and believe in ghosts! This is the book for you. I can’t wait to read more by Kristal! This was my first but definitely won’t be my last!
a morticians shadow is a small town haunting story that will have you on the edge of your seat. when deaths start occuring and Justin is being drawned to an old church graveyard, he starts to lose reality. perfect spooky story to read for Halloween, which I will probably do.
Just finished this. Once I started it was hard to put down. A great slow burn, creepy novella that keeps you on the edge of your seat. Characters are well developed and descriptions so vivid you almost feel like you’re there. The only that would make it better is if it was a trilogy.
Justin has only been in the small town of Stahl for a little while. He loves his new home and his job. Odd things start happening. Can it be stopped, or will the town be overwhelmed by evil. Suspenseful creepy read.
I really enjoyed the premise of this book. While the dialogue felt unnatural and distracted me frequently from the story, the frightening scenes were written in a perfectly descriptive manner.
Justin just doesn't know why he's called to this old church and graveyard. it pulls him haunts him. I really enjoyed this story. leaves you needing to know just why he's called to this place.
You wouldn’t think that setting up Shop as a new undertaker in a small town would be an incredibly exciting job. And you would generally be right, until you weren’t. You see, strange things are happening at the cemetery. Mysterious people in black cars who don’t seem to want you at the cemetery at all. And those unfortunate events that keep happening to friends. Not to mention that it’s just about Halloween. Oh well, what more could possibly go wrong?
Anyway, this story had some AMAZING creep factor, I loved how it was presented and executed. But, the dialog was extremely awkward. As in it wasn't the way most people interact. The more I read the more I dreaded reading how everyone spoke to eachother.
Either way I'm watching this author and look forward to watching her fine tune her obvious talent!
*SPOILERS AHEAD STOP NOW*
I felt like using the devil was a HUGE stretch. A demon would be way more plausible. The end made me raise an eyebrow and it almost lost me for a minute but I wanted to keep going. It's a good quick read for the most part.

As an ex-mortician, I had high hopes for this one. Small-town mortician horror is a great subgenre that deserves more stories and investment from authors.
This, though, didn’t work for me.
The burn was too slow, and something about the writing style pushed me out.
And the mortician turned his cell phone off.
WHAT. THE. FLIP?
I spent almost a decade with my phone joined to me at the hip, answering every call on the off chance it might be work-related. Even on vacation, if my phone died, if I was out of cell service, it wasn’t relaxing, it was anxiety-inducing. To willingly turn his phone off? What was he thinking?
Okay. I’ve worked through my emotional trauma now.
That wasn’t the point where I DNFed, and I did read on after for a little bit, but just couldn’t get into it.
Justin, a successful mortician, moves to Stahl, to run a new mortuary home. He is, soon fascinated with the local legends surrounding the old graveyard in the new small town he is to call home. Soon after, Justin finds himself having visions of things that make him question what is reality, and what isn't, having memories that aren't his, and being followed by mysterious men in suits, hell bent on keeping him away from the old graveyard, due to it being close to Halloween. What had he stumbled across? What secrets lie in the old Stahl Graveyard, and how does all of this involve Justin, himself? This was a haunting read! It was a slow-burn, with major tension, and anxiety that built up, until the story got really wild. I'm not, admittedly, used to reading demonic/paranormal horror stories, as they just aren't my first choice, however, this was done so well that I musy say that I really enjoyed this one! The visuals I got reading this were stunning, and stuck with me, while reading. The twist near the end was amazing, and really added to the story. I highly recommend this to anyone who really loves a good folklore/dark town legend book, with a demonic twist, and witchcraft. 5😈/5😈
I’ll be honest, this book took me longer than I wanted to finish, but that’s purely because life went mad in the run up to Christmas. Even when I wasn’t reading it, I was thinking about it constantly, which I think says everything.
The Mortitian’s Shadow is one of those books that’s genuinely hard to put down. Every time I picked it back up, I was straight back in, like I’d never left the story. It has that just one more chapter pull, even when you really should be doing something else.
What really hooked me is the fact it’s inspired by a real legend, Stull Cemetery in Kansas, which is said to contain a gateway to hell. That detail adds such an eerie layer to the story and honestly it’s sent me down a rabbit hole wanting to read more about the legend itself. I love when a book does that.
The atmosphere is dark, intriguing, and absorbing without feeling overdone.
I absolutely loved this one and would highly recommend it, especially if you enjoy stories with a creepy edge and a basis in real folklore. Definitely worth your time!!
