Betrayal, Vengeance, Romance
In Ephraim’s riveting thriller Requiem for Betrayal, betrayal, vengeance and romance drive the narrative.
It is 1973 in Paris. Brad James is a singer who part-times as a CIA contract worker. His new assignment is to find out who killed another agent, and to learn how this murder connects to a rumored terrorist plot. On Brad’s list of people to watch, one is a media magnate and dealer in illegal goods who has a beautiful assistant, Yolanda. When Brad foils an abduction attempt targeting Yolanda, she asks for his help. He hesitates. There is a beautiful love story in the making. Meanwhile, a Honduran drug lord seeks revenge against those who tortured and killed his son two years ago. He has managed to eliminate all but two, Cariño and Amy.

The author does an excellent job of developing the characters of the two main personalities, Brad and Yolanda, as well as the villains, Amy, Cariño, and Sanchez, a Latin American revolutionary. Thus, we get a well-rounded insight into people’s character and motivations.

All these surprising characters feed into a plot that becomes unpredictable in turn: people’s moves are difficult to anticipate, and the book’s big revelations and plot twists are all the more surprising. The book’s final twist at the end is really fresh. It succeeds in putting the finishing touches on any questions remaining about the context of the previous events.

This spy thriller was very unique compared to most of what’s out there lately in this genre. In “Requiem for Betrayal,” the terrorist’s plot serves as a platform for personal jealousies, acts of treachery, and cruel vengeance. It’s fast paced throughout. It has realistic action scenes. The main characters are all well developed. The writing is very good, so we have a good feeling of who the main characters are and their unique perspectives.

The hero is named Brad James. He’s a CIA agent using his popularity as a pop singer for cover. He’s exciting, handsome, and charming. He hates bullies and can fight, but he is also sensitive and polite. His biggest weakness is women. Unfortunately for him he has no charm or charisma when it comes to women he really likes. Our heroine in “Requiem,” Yolanda, is beautiful and talented. She proves she can somehow outmatch Brad in more ways than one. This story has a lot of surprises and twists. The ending really pays off and is super satisfying. You’d never expect it, especially as a spy thriller addict, but it really ties everything together well with no loose ends. I thought “Requiem for Betrayal” was a great read, and I highly recommend it for any spy thriller fans out there!

I won this book in a Goodreads Giveaway. I loved the characters, the story plot, the big twist at the end. Why I gave it only 3 stars is because it was a long tedious read. The author goes way overboard on descriptions of rooms. What they are drinking, what they are eating, what they are wearing, where they live, which roads they are driving. Every left turn, every right turn, every turn around on the road. Which would be fine if it helped with the story plot, but it does not. It has nothing to do to help the story or advance it in anyway so it takes away from the story instead of adding to it. This is a long read anyway with over 70 chapters. Then making it a tedious read made dread reading it. It took me twice as long to get through this book because of it. The story itself is a great spy thriller, murder. Terrorists, arms deals, revenge. It is all very good. Every bad guy gets there come uppance in the end. Except for a narcissistic full of her self mob daughter at the end. Who I believed got away from the authorities a little too lightly. The revelations at the end will blow you away. So it is a good read if you can get over the abject boring over descriptions.

I could not get into this book.

This book was so boring to me. There were so many people it was hard to keep them all straight at times. The overly descriptive paragraphs were tedious, having every aspect of a room described was annoying. It had no relevance on the story. Hearing exactly how they drink their coffee every time they had it was ridiculous. Do we really need to read about how many sugar cubes he used every time? The book dragged on because of stuff like this and I had to force myself to finish reading it. The only reason I did finish was because I won it in a GoodReads giveaway and needed to submit my review.

I received this book free in return of an honest review.

This book grabs you as soon as you open the prologue. I counted no less than 20 brutal deaths during that chapter. The body count went down after prologue, and I was quickly immersed in the spy world during the 1970s. The characters odd personalities played into the story (the French limo driver who spoke like a cowboy made me laugh) and the plot thickened. The brutal killings did return at the end of the book but not as bad as the prologue. I really enjoyed this book and will look for this author in the future. I highly suggest to anyone who loves spies, death, sex, and a good plot twist.

Requiem For Betrayal is definitely my kind of spy thriller, written by a master. It’s Paris in 1973 and Brad James works for the CIA, sometimes. A terrorist plot complete with a fem fatal develops around him and soon engulfs him. I especially appreciated the depths to which Ephraim developed his characters. The little details of everyday life, opinions, and reactions. He really took his time. Requiem had some delicious twists to the story that I was not expecting. I highly recommend Requiem For A Deserter. We may have the makings of new James Bond or Jack Reacher. What a series it would make. Jeff Bailey, author of Not On My Watch.

I loved this book that brought me back to the Paris of the 70s. The writing was so good. The style and prose are carefully crafted. The language in the dialogues was just the way we used to talk. There were many unconventional characters and an unexpected heroine. The story was really innovative. Every chapter had a new twist, so, I just had to keep reading on and on. Brad James is a true hero reminiscent of the times. I look forward anxiously to reading Brad's future adventures.

A recording artist who is also a CIA contractor sounded like such a stretch to me that I couldn’t wait to see how the author would pull it off. It makes for a degree of incredibility which some people may not be comfortable with it but the author builds a world and a story which work. There is a lot of fascinating detail as they create characters and relationships, leading the reader down a tricky trail as the mystery is pursued.

Just finished Requiem for Betrayal by Ephraim. I read Ephraim’s first novel, Spy Games for a Deserter and I got hooked! This one is even better. A spy novel, set in 1970s Paris. I loved it! The characters are great, and the plot has lots of twists and turns. Brad James, the main character, is a cross between James Bond and James Dean. The story is great and once I started it, I couldn’t stop reading. I recommend it unreservedly.

I think Requiem for Betrayal has all the required elements for a good yarn- a believable, charismatic hero, a believable, charismatic heroine, villains, dirty rats, turncoats, liars and cheaters, multiple plot lines and relationships running into each other, reaching the crescendo revelation to end the book. Ephraim, the author, has weaved a riveting spy tale.

This book is filled with twists and turns that keep you guessing who is who and who is really pulling the strings.

It is an exciting shoot-them-up book. There are a lot of bodies that drop and some more gruesome than others. There are several people seeking revenge and you don't find out why until almost the end.

This would make a good action movie.

Requiem for Betrayal

A long and confusing story. For me, there were too many characters to keep track of. Also, the sex scenes were terribly written. The overall story was clever, even though it sometimes seemed to take a while to get to the point.

I am unable to recommend this book because I found myself wishing it would end.

I persevered with it, though I thought there was too much verbiage to allow the book to flow more naturally.

A quirky type of thriller novel with some very interesting lead characters with normal human fobiols. Love the difference.

I didn’t expect to enjoy this book as much as I did. Requiem for Betrayal isn’t your usual spy story full of explosions — it’s slower, smarter, and has real atmosphere. Brad James, a CIA agent who also happens to be a musician, gets caught up in a tangle of old betrayals, terrorist plots, and messy love affairs. The mix of espionage and personal drama really works here. The setting — Paris in the 1970s — gives it this great, slightly smoky feel. You can almost picture the streets and the people he meets.

It’s not a short book, but I read it in about two days because I just wanted to see where it would go. The pacing shifts a lot — quiet scenes, tense conversations, then sudden bursts of action. Even the dialogue feels loaded, like everyone’s hiding something. I found myself trying to guess who was really on whose side.

There are a lot of characters at first, and I’ll admit I had to flip back a few times to remember who’s connected to who. But once it clicks, everything falls into place and the story really pays off. The ending hit the right note — dark but fitting.

Overall, Requiem for Betrayal surprised me. It’s clever, detailed, and human — a spy thriller with actual depth.

American pop star Brad James leads a double life as CIA troubleshooter, but his Paris recording session turns deadly when a fellow operative is murdered. Rescuing mysterious Honduran heiress Yolanda from terrorists, Brad wades into an international conspiracy fueled by a decade-old vengeance stretching from Central American drug corridors to the capitals of Europe.

Ephraim Clark delivers a high-stakes international conspiracy thriller with heavy helpings of Cold War espionage tradecraft and globe-spanning intrigue. His unusual protagonist, a pop singer and martial artist turned spy, adds refreshing novelty. This is one of Clark’s strongest suits: his quirky, multi-faceted characters fly in the face of genre archetypes, even when their physical descriptions veer toward the corny end of the scale. The outsize revenge narrative is woven throughout, its deftly scripted revelations never overshadowing the explosive pace. Sharp, entertaining, this is a high-stakes tale of secrets and intrigue.

This is quite an enjoyable read based in Paris in the 70s. Reading this book brought back memories of watching karate. Movies starring Chuck Norris when I was young. Brad, James and Chuck are CIA operatives trying to shut down a terrorist plot in France. Brad is skilled at karate which is reminiscent of all of the older action flicks with martial arts. Can two CIA operators close down a major terrorist threat? Will a Honduras cartel boss get revenge for those that has hurt his family? Will those being hunted turn the tables to complete the destruction they started in Honduras many years ago? how does a cartel boss fit in with the Palestinian terror plot? There are so many different moving parts in this richly complex action/espionage type novel. all of the characters are well developed and lead the reader on a journey that doesn’t stop until the very end of the novel. Revenge, redemption, deception, love, action, and nonstop action makes this novel a winner.

If I'd read this directly without reading the previous 2 novels in the series immediately beforehand, I think I would have preferred it.

I received a review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.

As it was the writing felt a little bit repetitive both in the phrases used and the scenes in the book.

The twists in the story feel like a mirror of the previous 2 novels: conspiracy, fight scenes, a girlfriend whose loyalty is questionable, someone higher up in "city hall" who could be a traitor.

It's not a bad spy novel - it's just quite similar in many of the underlying structures to the previous two books in the series.

This is the second book featuring Brad James that I've read and it's another enjoyable thriller. Brad is a musician based in Paris but also works for the CIA. He goes undercover after a colleague is murdered and things get complicated when he rescues Yolanda from the terrorists he is looking for.

The pace here is relentless and there is a lot of violence, some extremely gruesome. I enjoyed how you know everyone is untrustworthy but you don't know to what extent. This even extends to the US officials. There's lots of betrayal here and I was on tenterhooks reading every word. I look forward to seeing what mission Brad is tasked with next.

Although I found Requiem for Betrayal confusing because of the multitude of characters, I eventually found it a compelling read. I kinda liked all the surprises. Made for a fun experiences. I liked the cinematic quality of the writing but also appreciated the times when the novel had detailed descriptions of rooms and clothes and food. An example was –“the lamps placed strategically in the four corners of the room sported shades designed to resemble the sails on the buccaneer boats of old.” Surprisingly, it kept me intrigued. The dialogue is simple and effective and believable. And I did come to love Brad James, the protagonist pop-star and CIA contractor. All around the book is a bold and ambitious spy thriller filled with romance.

There are so many different characters and moving parts to this story that it takes quite a while to figure out how things connect. The true matermind to this whole story is not apparent until very close to the end.

Brad seems to get himself out of most of his troubles and a lot who cause that trouble end up dead but you still want him to win. There is a terrorist plot, revenge plot and some sinister stuff from the past that play in this tale. Once things start to click the story becomes more enjoyable.

A lot going on here, but in a way that actually works. The mix of espionage, revenge, and personal drama keeps things moving, and I found myself wanting to see how everything would connect.

What I liked most was how the story jumps between different characters and locations without getting confusing. It gives it a bigger, almost cinematic feel as everything starts to come together.

There are a few twists along the way that caught me off guard, and the tension builds nicely as things unfold. The dynamic between Brad and Yolanda also adds another layer of mystery.

Overall, a solid thriller that keeps you engaged and doesn’t drag.

n outstanding and deeply moving read. Requiem for Betrayal is beautifully written — suspenseful, emotional, and thought-provoking. Ephraim Clark captures the complexity of human loyalty and the devastation of broken trust with incredible realism.
It’s one of those rare books that makes you think and feel in equal measure. The tension, the moral dilemmas, and the haunting atmosphere are masterfully done.
5 stars – unforgettable, intense, and beautifully crafted.

Ephraim Clark has a strong writing style for the thriller genre, it had that element that I was looking for and enjoyed from the suspenseful atmosphere. It was a great entry in the Brad James Thriller series. I was engaged with what was happening and enjoyed the overall feel of this world. It had that historical thriller element that I was looking for and was glad I got to read this.
