Fated Rebirth

Rate this book
A seductive new dark fantasy romance series of divine rebellion, reincarnation, and vengeance.

Death was never the end... it was the design.

Violet Shaw remembers being killed.
Attending the prestigious Shademore University on an equestrian archery scholarship, Violet expects and welcomes challenges—but not violet memories of another life where she was abducted, enslaved, and murdered. When the visions sharpen into certainty, Violet must find the man who killed her and end him before he abducts another innocent.

There’s only one complication—her overly protective childhood friend, Rowan Monroe.

Once condemned to death for stealing a forbidden tome from the Forgotten Wasteland’s Library, Rowan should have been erased from existence. Instead, the Fates had other plans. Reborn into the modern world, Rowan remembers every sin of his past… and the monster who claimed him. Now bound to Violet as her unwilling guardian, he’s dragged back into a world he swore to abandon.

When a student’s murder throws Shademore University into lockdown, Rowan and Violet are forced into close quarters while searching for Violet’s killer. Their investigation uncovers magic, broken myths, ruthless monsters, forsaken gods, and secret societies as they battle their inner demons from previous lives and fall into a forbidden love.

A love, they soon realize, that could destroy them both.

She is his ruin.
He is her salvation.
Together, they bring a future the gods fear.

Fated Rebirth is a dark fantasy romance with past-life memories and fiercely feminist mythic undertones that blend urban fantasy with romantic fantasy, high-stakes, gritty storytelling filled with slow-burning tension, found family, childhood frenemy-to-lovers heat, and neo-noir fantasy worldbuilding.

Perfect for fans of Ninth House, The Deathless One, Our Infinite Fates, Terror at the Gates, The Book of Azrael along with authors Scarlett St. Clair, Sheila Materson, Carissa Broadbent, Keri Lake, Laura Thalassa, Sarah J. Mass, Sylvia Mercedes and all dark romantasy readers who crave morally grey characters, feminine rage, and vigilante justice for abusive men.

First, I want to thank Reno for the opportunity to read this book as an ARC and trusting me with your story.

Alright, now let’s get to the review. This is one of the best dark romance books I’ve read so far this year, and I’m so glad that I got picked to read this. It mixes dark romance, fantasy, and supernatural elements all into one. The story is a slow burn between childhood best friends and turns into something absolutely beautiful. By the end of the book, it had me on my toes, wanting more. My exact reaction was “how do you leave a book like this!?” Safe to say I’m books and cannot wait for book two. 💕

Violet, rebirthed with one goal in mind, has been given an unexpected second chance at life and she intends to use every moment to reclaim the life that was taken from her. A seemingly normal college student hides a strange secret - she's been reincarnated with only vengeance on her mind. Unaware of the strange creatures that lurk in the 'normal' world, she hunts for the man who destroyed her. Rowan, her childhood friend with an equally dark secret, has sworn to be her guardian as she hunts for her target. As the story unfolds, secrets are revealed as reality unravels before their eyes. Every move Violet makes is more costly than she realizes and eventually, even the friendships she's made result in the ultimate sacrifices. Prepare yourself to question everything you thought you knew, the world is never quite as it seems.

I am thrilled to be back in the fantastical world Reno Mist has created. This is gothic writing its finest. It's the chilling way she convinces you to question everything you thought you understood about this world - and any others that might dare to exist. Fated Rebirth easily stands out in the dark fantasy genre as a beacon of rich, haunting storytelling. Heart-wrenching prose paints a world where supernatural creatures lurk amongst humanity - yet it is the human monsters who still manage some of the most greusome and unforgivable crimes. I am always amazed at the way Mist manages to write such a dark and haunting story while still ensnaring the reader's emotions. I ached in agony as Violet relived some of the worst nightmares but melted as Rowan helped her reframe so much of her trauma as she begins reclaiming her body and power for herself.

This book is filled with the tropes we know and love, including: forced proximity, friends-to-lovers, morally grey MCs, mythology and gods, and all the best feminine rage.

The world this story comes from is one that I'm anxious to learn more about. It's easy to tell that Mist will continue to build and expand as the story continues and her readers are waiting with baited breath. Fated Rebirth is a perfect fit for readers who enjoy the writings of Kerri Maniscalco and Scarlett St. Clair. Be conscious of the content warnings and prepare to dive into a world where it's safe to say nothing is as it seems. Thank you to Reno R. Mist for providing an eARC in exchange for an honest review.

Holy. Actual. Shit.

Reno R. Mist has officially done it again! And somehow raised the bar even higher!

I was already hooked after Captured Prey, but Fated Rebirth takes that foundation and absolutely detonates it. The premise alone is unhinged in the best way: imagine surviving unimaginable childhood trauma… being murdered… and then being reborn with every horrific memory intact. From page one, the emotional weight and tension are immediate and suffocating in the best possible way.

What Reno does exceptionally well - and what keeps me coming back every SINGLE time - is balance. This story is dark, yes, but it’s also razor-sharp, immersive, and incredibly intentional in its worldbuilding. The elite university setting never slips into basic school romance territory (thank god), and instead serves as a sleek backdrop for something much bigger and far more dangerous.

And the lore? Immaculate. PERIOD.

The concept of gods operating like a mafia, ruling through the currency of worshippers, is genuinely one of the most original frameworks I’ve read in dark romantasy in a long time. The Second Circle, the doors, the layered supernatural politics - every piece feels meticulously designed. You don’t just read this world… you step directly into it, and my god do I ever want to step into it!

Rowan and Violet bring exactly the kind of tension I crave: sharp, complicated, and threaded with that slow-burn pull that keeps tightening chapter by chapter. And can we talk about the demons for a second? Because the dry, witty demon energy in this book is elite.

As someone who lives in the darker, spicier corner of romance, this hit every single one of my buttons while still delivering a fully developed fantasy backbone. The pacing is divine, the character work is mesmerizing, and the emotional stakes never let up.

Reno Mist is the author who started this particular spiral for me, and the fact that she continues to deliver at this level is honestly wild.

More demons. More supernatural politics. More Second Circle. I am seated for all of it. An absolutely explosive way to end my February reading.

Another 👑 God-tier read by Reno!

Violet wakes up with complete memories of a life she’s lived before, one where she was taken from her family at nine years old and sold to a man who made her suffer unimaginable horrors for twenty-four years. While she knows she’s not the only one to experience such a rebirth, as a new college student, she suffers trying to reconcile her current life with her past one, and is determined to find the man who broke her and make him pay. Little did she know that by entering his world, she was also entering a world of monsters she believed were only myth, and exposing herself to dangers she never imagined in her worst nightmares.

While Rowan was adopted by Violet’s surrogate uncle after his own rebirth, his is much different than Violet’s. She is reborn into another version of her own life; whereas he lived a full life in another world, before he was sentenced to death and the fates decided to send him here. While he didn’t know at first about Violet’s experiences, a bad feeling tells him she is in danger, so when their fathers send him to keep watch over her, he quickly realizes that she is entering the wold of monsters and myth that he fought so hard to escape. But while he swore he would do anything to keep her safe, falling in love for her could end up being the cause of both their downfalls.

I received an early copy of this book from NetGalley and Rattle The Stars PR and boy was it ever worth the wait. After reading One More Chance where I got to see Levi’s story, and getting glimpses of what happened to Violet when she was 9 in his other life, I was anxiously waiting for her side of that story. The emotion in this book was off the charts, and while it is technically a fantasy, both Violet and Rowan’s reactions to their experiences were so realistic, it was impossible not to be sucked in. Watching Violet find her power, when it was taken from her so brutally in her other life, and having Rowan silently support her, being exactly what she needed, without controlling her was so perfect. This story was a powerful mix of love, feminism, finding one’s truth, and taking back what is yours, and I can’t wait to see what part two will bring.

4/5 stars.

I received this as an ARC from NetGalley.

Whew. Make sure you read the trigger warnings if dark content isn’t your thing for this one. This was my first “read now” title on NetGalley and it has set the bar high for future reads. 4/5 stars.

This was a dark, intense ride that totally gripped me, I quite literally could not put it down. The story follows Violet, who is living with heavy trauma in the form of flashbacks from a past life where she was trafficked, tortured, and eventually murdered. Now she’s back in a new body, in a new life, and she is 100% here for vengeance. I loved that she was willing to cross any line and break every rule to get her justice; feminine rage at its finest. Then you have Rowan, who’s also reincarnated into this modern world and grew up as her family friend. They’re keeping secrets (my one major critique because I cannot stand anything even resembling a miscommunication trope), but their devotion to each other is the only thing stronger than the need for revenge.

Despite tackling heavy subject matter, the novel handles it thoughtfully and consistently emphasizes consent, autonomy, and personal agency, especially in contrast to the exploitation and violations Violet experienced in her past life. It’s the kind of story that blends suspense, romance, and deeper themes in a way that keeps you invested in both the mystery and the characters. It’s rare to find a story this gritty that still feels so safe in how the characters treat each other, especially with the detour into BDSM. It’s dark, it’s supernatural, and it’s deeply emotional, definitely a 4-star win for me.

TLDR: A dark but compelling fantasy with past-life memories and secrets, supernatural beings, and a childhood frenemies-to lovers romance built on trust, healing, and consent.

Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for providing me with an ARC in exchange for an honest review.

Fated Rebirth was an interesting start to the series with a lot of unique ideas. The prologue sets a very dark and brutal tone, which initially threw me off since darker romantasy isn’t usually my preferred subgenre. However, once the story gets going, the tone feels much more balanced than the opening suggests.

The world includes a wide range of supernatural elements—demons, vampires, werewolves, sirens, and even references to gods—which gave the story strong paranormal vibes despite being marketed as romantasy. I also found the reincarnation aspect intriguing, particularly how Violet’s past life and desire for vengeance begin to influence her actions.

Rowan ended up being one of the more compelling characters for me. His relationship with Violet starts off reluctant due to their complicated history, but his growing intrigue and attraction toward her gradually shifts their dynamic as the story progresses. Rowan also becomes increasingly protective of Violet and hints at having a mysterious past of his own, which made me curious to learn more about him in future books.

The final portion of the book definitely picks up in action with higher stakes for the characters. Interestingly, the versions of Violet and Rowan shown in the prologue still feel much darker and more villainous than who they are in this first book, which makes me think their full transformation may unfold later in the series.

Overall, while the darker elements may not be for every reader, fans of paranormal-leaning romantasy and morally complex characters will likely enjoy this story.

I went into Fated Rebirth really excited because I’ve read a short story by this author before and absolutely loved it. Unfortunately, this one didn’t hit the same way for me.

The concept had so much potential — past lives, fate, vampyres, dark fantasy elements — but the execution felt rushed and like the story line was just thrown together.

I really struggled to understand what the core focus of the story actually was. It seemed more to be about her life with MMC rather than her vengeance against the people from her past. The mention of supernatural (Vampyres, shifters, werewolves) just seemed really out of place with the original plot of the story and the mention of GodBlood seemed pointless.

The vengeance arc, particularly regarding her abuser, came across as rushed and almost like a late addition to raise the stakes. It didn’t feel fully developed or properly woven into the overall narrative, and for such a heavy theme, it needed more depth and care.

That said, the writing itself is strong and there are moments of really compelling atmosphere and tension. The author clearly has imaginative ideas and a flair for dark fantasy romance — I just wish the plot had been tighter and more cohesive.

I’d still read this author again because I know they can deliver, but this one just didn’t fully land for me sadly.

I just finished this book and honestly, I will be thinking about it for a while. The characters’ backstories are so layered and real, and the whole revenge‑after‑reincarnation angle gives everything this sharp emotional edge that I loved.

The slow shift between the two main characters — from friends to something deeper — is done so well. Nothing feels rushed or forced, and the FMC never loses herself or bends to fit someone else’s expectations. She stays her, and it makes the whole relationship feel even more meaningful. The MMC is such a great balance to her. He has this possessive streak — not in an over-the-top way, but in that “I’ve got you, no matter what” kind of way. He’s an anchor when things get to much, he’s a source of strength and knowledge, and you feel how deeply he’s tied to her without him ever overshadowing her.

As the story goes on, you get pulled right into their little duo. Their pain hits you, their banter makes you smile, and their struggles feel intense. It’s one of those books where you don’t just follow the plot — you live in it for a while.

And then that cliffhanger… absolutely rude. I need the next book immediately, and I’m half tempted to curse the author for making me wait. I would still recommend this but be warned…patience will be needed in the end!!

⭐️⭐️⭐️A 6 STAR READ⭐️⭐️⭐️

First of all, the opening of this book?! It alone deserves 5 stars. This author knows exactly how to draw you in and keep you. I was hooked from page 1.
Second, this book is so wonderfully layered. Its paranormal mixed with fantasy mixed with dark romance in a way that feels so natural because of how well written it is.
The main characters were written so perfect, tragic and flawed and human in ways that many books lack. Their emotions were easily felt and you are in love with them from thr first paragraph.

The infinite loyalty from Rowan was my favorite part of their entire dynamic. Unwavering.
AND THE RESPECT. Yes sir.

Violet's feminine rage and need for vigilante justice really fueled the entire book and I cheered for her page after page.

I have absolutely nothing bad to say about this book. Every part of it wrapped me in its claws and I binge read it in 24 hours. I could not put it down. The storytelling, the way she uniquely formed her own concept of reincarnation, demons and folklore.... it was all brilliant and completely in its own category.
And the world building? INSANE.

I will be gnawing at the bars of my enclosure until the next book comes out. 😩😩

This one pulled me in right away and did not let go. That opening instantly sets the tone and before I knew it I was completely absorbed in the atmosphere of the story. There’s something about the way it begins that immediately makes you feel like you’ve stepped into a world with a lot waiting beneath the surface.

The overall vibe blends dark fantasy, mythology, and romance in such an engaging way. Everything feels layered and immersive, like there are secrets tucked into every corner of the world. The writing builds this intense atmosphere that keeps the pages turning because you constantly feel like something bigger is unfolding.

Violet and Rowan’s dynamic really stood out to me. There’s a powerful emotional pull between them that adds so much depth to the story. Rowan’s loyalty feels fierce and unwavering, which makes their connection feel even more intense. Violet brings such a strong, fiery energy to the story, and that determination really drives everything forward.

The world itself feels expansive and full of hidden pieces waiting to be discovered. Between the mythology, the tension, and the emotional weight of the story, it becomes incredibly easy to sink into this book and just stay there.

This book encorporates dark academia and dark fantasy, it gives similar vibes to Ninth House from Leigh Bardugo. This book was written with such passion and detail, that I was sucked into the story from the first page. I really liked that it started with the scene from the now and then jumped into the past, so the whole time I was reading, I thought about who we would get to the end. At first I was really confused of how the world worked and what supernatural beings existed but because Violet also didn’t know anything it was like learning through her and experiencing the same thoughts, shocks and confusions as her. The pacing of the story was good, I didn’t feel like the story was going to fast or slow. At the end I would have loved for the pacing to slow down, I felt like the story was pressured to end even though it needed some more time for it to wrap up properly. So that’s to only thing I would have loved to be different, some more time in the world with the characters and also seeing their love develop some more. The ending just felt a little abrupt and out of nowhere I need more of the story. Hopefully there is going to be a second book. But thank you for writing this exiting and wonderful story :)

I went into this one completely blind and wow… I was not expecting the level of dark and spicy that unfolded. 😆

Set in a world ruled by ancient gods, secret orders, and monsters pulled straight from myth, the story follows Rowan and Violet as fate repeatedly forces their paths to cross. What begins as an uneasy alliance quickly becomes something far more dangerous as temptation, secrets, and power struggles threaten to destroy them both.

The atmosphere of the book kept me hooked. The tension between Rowan and Violet was intense, and the darker tone of the world added a lot of intrigue.

Overall, the story definitely kept my attention, but I found myself wishing the plot leaned a little more into the revenge storyline rather than focusing so heavily on the romance. The foundation for a really compelling revenge arc was there, and I would have loved to see that explored a bit deeper.

Still, if you enjoy dark fantasy with spice, fate driven connections, and morally complicated characters, this one will definitely keep you turning the pages.

Thank you Reno R. Mist for this complimentary read!

This book was an ARC read.

Fated Rebirth was an excellent exploration of rebirth/reincarnation. Not every past life is going to be pleasant, a fact that those who have been reborn in this world know well. Violet, our FMC, has been reborn with memories of a horrible past. Once she filters through them, the path is clear; revenge. And honestly, who can blame her? If I was reborn from a life that bad, I would make sure everyone who wronged me suffered.

The way Reno presents Violet to the reader makes you want to fight her battles for her, even though you know very well she can handle it herself. I also like the way the prologue and the epilogue of this book have been set up to make it seem like Violet is the one telling us this whole story.

You will fall in love with Rowan, the MMC. He's so protective and broody and pure. He is exactly what everyone craves in a man. Both are equally strong but the give and take when the other needs is so good. Their relationship is very well written. I look forward to seeing what is in store for Violet and Rowan in the next book.

I was absolutely blown away by Fated Rebirth. This is book 1 in the Heretical Gods Series. I love this book because it is a dark, intense ride that will hold you in a chock hold until the very end. I will be very honest I could not put it down at all I read it quick because I could/ would not put it down. Now Violet she was an amazing character. She was reincarnated and had flash backs of her past life. The flash backs are heavy, she was trafficked, tortured, and eventually murdered. Due to all of this she was on a war path for vengeance. Her feminine rage is so empowering and very heavy. Then we have Rowan who is also reincarnated and in his past was family friend of violets family. They do have secrets amongst them but there bond they have together is strong. Overall, this was an amazing book, I can tell the author through their whole heart into this book. The way they built everything up, the characters, and the way things played out was just amazing. I cannot wait until more of this series is released. I am excited to see how things continue.

Can you tell from the first chapter of a book that it’s going to be 5 stars because I sure could. From the first chapter this book had me in a chokehold.
Our FMC Violet is living 2 lives, the one where she currently is a 20 year old college student and reliving memories from her previous life. A life where she had been abducted and eventually murdered. Violet is set on finding the man responsible in this current life to ensure that he can’t strike again and will do literally anything to ensure she gets her revenge.
Battling with memories of his own previous life Rowan, a childhood friend of Violets; understands the dangers that Violet has no clue about. Determined to keep an eye on her, Rowan inserts himself in her everyday life.
This book is spicy in the perfect places, had me blushing and giggling like a teenager. This book is a perfect mix of supernatural creatures with a mob vibe.. and the ending - omg I need the next book.

YES!! I loved this book. I loved the FMC, I loved the MMC (beyond description), and I loved the lore and the pacing. Seriously—if you’re after a romance with a strong female lead and a morally grey yet respectful MMC, look no further.

This is so much more than a romance. It’s about taking back your narrative, healing, and—honestly—revenge. This is very much a check the trigger warnings kind of book, as it deals with darker themes, but I genuinely think the author handled them with care and respect.

The prose was perfection. I was never pulled out of the story, not once. And now, truly, the only thing left to do is stalk the author’s page while waiting for book two to arrive. Highly recommend. Sometimes for reasons you can't explain, you are drawn to a book...this is such a case for me.

I received this book as an ARC - I will always give my honest options

This book wow - I can't wait to read more, that ending !

Reno R Mist has written a fantasy romance with unique character's - who have abilities or fates like I have not read about before.
Yes there are demons, Gods, supernatural's including wares and vampires but it is the main character Violet and her rebirth, the experiences that she goes through, her need to find peace/vengeance and her strength that I think is unique to this book and well written.

I don't know what else I can say with out giving too much away - all I can say is that if you like curses, strong female characters, good banter, childhood friends, secrets, demons, college setting but are actually older, ro*e play of both kinds then you really should read this book

Dark. Seductive. Utterly visceral.

Fated Rebirth is a dark romantasy featuring reborn humans, supernatural creatures, and deities in every shape and size.

Violet and Rowan are childhood frenemies pulled together by her need for revenge against the man that murdered her in her first life and Rowan’s possessive need to protect her from all of the monsters of the world - both human and not.

This story weaves past and present together with remarkable precision. The fantasy elements blend seamlessly with reality in a way that makes everything seem perfectly natural.

Reno’s storytelling is haunting and breathtaking. Her characters are emotional, messy, complex, and utterly human.

I was immersed from the first page until the cliffhanger at the end. Beyond excited to see where the story goes in the next book.

This dark fantasy pulled me in from the very first page with its seductive, haunting atmosphere. The themes of rebirth and reincarnation weave powerfully through the story as Violet struggles against the weight of memories from her past lives. Watching her fight for her own identity while destiny tries to define her made every chapter compelling. Rowen is deliciously broody, strong as steel, and carrying darkness of his own. As Violet’s fated guardian, he battles his inner demons just as fiercely as he protects her. The tension between them simmers beneath every glance and every clash. The world-building is rich and immersive, filled with sweeping battles and high-stakes trials that keep the momentum strong. Together they face temptation, danger, and destiny itself. Now that it is over I’m already desperate to see where the next book takes them.

I needed a good, dark, twisty, romantasy book and this one delivered. I was hooked on this book, and I couldn’t’ wait to see where it went.

Violet has lived more than one life, some moments a lot better than most. Out on her own, living the college life, she has decided, revenge will be hers. She will give up anything to deliver her form of just; no cost is too great.

Rowan is not new to this world; I guess in a way he is. Violet has always been fiercely protected by his father and her father. When Roman senses she is in trouble, he offers to follow her and ensure her safety. He never expected to feel the way he does.

Sharp, Dark, and Addictively Built

Fated Rebirth hooked me with its worldbuilding and kept me invested through every shift in tension. The mix of mythic power, modern grit, and slow-burn chemistry feels fresh, and the atmosphere has this steady, simmering intensity that works so well for a dark romantasy.

Violet and Rowan’s dynamic is complicated in all the right ways, and the supernatural politics add real weight without overwhelming the story. It’s bold, imaginative, and full of the kind of details that make the world feel alive.

A gripping, dark fantasy romance that delivers exactly what I look for in this genre. I loved it.

I personally did not connect with this story or the characters but I am choosing to rate and review this ARC with information I think other readers might like.

First I like the idea behind the book. I liked that there were multiple characters that had been reborn into a second life but still remember their old life. That was interesting. I liked that there was a variety of magical beings. Vampires, Demons, etc. I also think if you like a lot of spice and sexual tension/banter in your fantasy novels this would be a good one. It definitely leans into the fetish portion I.E. ropes and knots.

Reno Mist is quickly becoming one of my favorite's. Not just because she knows how to open the downstairs flood gates but because her stories are captivating. If you love when worlds collide, i.e., Gods, Demons, Monsters, and Humans, this book/series has it all. It's easy to tell that a tremendous amount of world building is at play and I can't wait to see how many circles of hell our characters make their way through. Needless to say you should give this Indie Author a chance. It will be worth your while.

I picked up faded rebirth after reading captured prey, a short novella based around the second circle where Demons and humans another supernatural beings cohabit. This is a much longer story based around Violet and Rowan where past lives and present lives converge and vengeance is priority. I love the story building in this novel and the characters were relatable and believable. I really enjoyed the places this book took me. This book felt as though it is the first part, it doesn’t feel like a completed book I want to know more about what happens after the contract is signed. I truly hope there is much more to come. I gave this book 4 stars. I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.
