The Crones of a Feather paranormal cozy mystery series is about starting over at midlife, magic, and building a sisterhood with strong, inspiring women.
Beth Dolgner writes paranormal fiction and non-fiction. Her interest in things that go bump in the night really took off on a trip to Savannah, Georgia, so it's fitting that the Betty Boo, Ghost Hunter Series of paranormal romance novels takes place in that spooky city. Beth's young adult novels, the steampunk Manifest and the urban fantasy A Talent for Death, also have paranormal elements. Her non-fiction work includes Georgia Spirits and Specters and Everyday Voodoo.
Since Georgia is obviously on her mind, you might think Beth lives there. Well, she did, but these days she and her husband live in Berlin, Germany, with their three cats. Beth misses those mild Georgia winters and proper iced tea, but there's no reason her characters can't enjoy those things.
Beth also enjoys giving presentations on Victorian death and mourning traditions as well as Victorian Spiritualism. She has been a volunteer at an historic cemetery, a ghost tour guide and a paranormal investigator. Right now she's chronicling the best spooky spots around Europe.
I received a copy from the author and voluntarily reviewed it.
I really enjoyed the first book in this series and was excited to start this second book. It follows Hazel and her coven as they try to solve another mystery. This time a councilman shows up dead after someone divined his demise. Hazel can't help but get involved again to solve the case.
This was another fun one. I like reading about Hazel and her coven, they each have their own personality and their own jobs which bring them in contact with various other characters, which works great for solving the mystery. I liked seeing them really be a coven in this book, while book 1 was still focused on them getting together and starting their coven. They interact with each other and do things as a group and they all help each other out. I really liked this.
The mystery was a decent one. It kept me guessing and I wasn't quite sure who had done it despite there being not that many suspects. I liked how Hazel collected clues and how she handled the mystery and I liked how she is the one to figure it out. It made sense when the reveal played out and I could see hints looking back even tough I hadn't been thinking in that direction. I thought the lady who did divination using frozen peas was so fun, that was so unique and fun to read about and there are some fun scenes involving her, what she does with the peas and a clue that gets revealed when Hazel goes for a visit.
There is more magic in this book as the coven does a few more spells. I also liked seeing Hazel try and help her granddaughter who is a strong witch who doesn't really know how to control her powers yet or use them. Hazel is teaching her a bit about magic. There are plenty of fun scenes involving the coven and I really liked reading about these 4 ladies.
To summarize: This was a solid sequel. I liked reading about Hazel and her coven and I liked seeing them feel more like a coven after getting established in book 1. They really work together a lot and are there for each other and there are some spells they do together as well. The mystery kept me guessing despite there not being too many suspects. I liked how Hazel was the one to figure out who had done it and I could see some of the hints in that direction looking back. I especially liked the side character who divined the future using frozen peas and those scenes involving her were fun. The found family theme is really getting prominent in this book and I also liked there is a bit more magic than in book 1. I had a great time reading this one and I look forward to the next book.
Hazel Deals With a Dead Body, Her 3-Year-Old Witchy Granddaughter, Ghosts, and Other Magical Beings!
Hazel Underwood is the new inherited owner of the local funeral home, in small-town Foxfire Haven, Washington, where everybody is magical. She turned the funeral home into a home, where she rented out three rooms to three local witches: Jo, a newspaper journalist and her familiar Gordon the male pelican; Valerian, a bartender at the local tavern and her familiar, Lonnie the female raven; and Marlee, the local wedding planner and her female familiar, Stella the toucan. Hazel's male familiar is Perkins (Perky), a small burrowing owl. Therefore, this series is totally different from all other witch stories: all four witches have birds as Familiars. This episode has these four witches trying to solve the mystery of who killed Fortie, a city council member who is found dead in the park. The local Detective Constable Wyatt is also trying to solve this case. Hazel has a lot of hats to fill in her life: she turned the funeral home's hearse into a delivery business; she has to deal with Euphoria, the local mayor and still a mean girl, 35 years after high school; and she has to help control her three-year-old granddaughter Hailey's extremely powerful magic. While Hazel's daughter Tara did not inherit her mother's magic, Hailey did, and it seems Hailey is extremely powerful and mischievous. There is also a resident ghost, a former undertaker named Holman, who pops up in front of any of the resident witches when they dress tacky, so that he can insult them. There might even be another ghost haunting the place, because closed and locked doors are opened when nobody is at home. I love this new series, and even though I might not be totally magical, I can relate to many of the characters in this book. There is no other series where you can find a short gnome, a seven-foot tall Bigfoot, and a shape shifting frog in one tiny town. I gave this book 5 stars and can hardly wait to read book 3. I received an advanced reader's copy and this is my voluntary honest review.
I enjoyed this book. I was so disappointed when the author brought her Nightmare in Arizona series to an end and while there might not be as many quirky characters, it's just as delightful and is on it's way to being a good replacement. I really like the four witches and there unusual familiars. The different personalities and even jobs make them a great team and you get a real sense of them bonding and growing. The mystery kept me guessing and I never did come up with the right killer. The story also had me chucking, how the author comes up with an idea and runs with it is just amazing because she makes the whacky just seem natural and after telling the future with frozen peas means cooking dinner is never going to be the same again. The main mystery gets solved but there is a few strange happens that is unfolding with each new book and that's why I am eagerly awaiting the next book.
When the local council man is found dead, there is no shortage of suspects. Hazel tries to stay out of it but she keeps stumbling on clues that has her narrowing the suspect list down. Can she find the killer without resorting to frozen peas for the answer and her future? Backed up by her fellow roommates and coven members Jo, Marlee, and Valerian and there feathered familiar's magic is going to fly. I was given this free review copy book at my request and have voluntarily left this review.
Fifty-something Hazel Underwood is enjoying her new life in Foxfire Haven. She has a new coven made up of her renters at the old funeral home property where she lives, and they’ve all become fast friends. Her new delivery service is making ends meet for her, and she’s beginning to reconnect with her magic.
The town, however, is shocked when one of their councilmen is murdered, and Hazel finds herself unintentionally working to solve the mystery…
This was another enjoyable cosy paranormal tale, set in Foxfire Haven. It’s fun to watch as Hazel starts to gain some self confidence, but the best part for me was when the biggest boost for her, came from an unexpected (to her) direction. The bird familiars were also extra good in this story, and I loved seeing how they too have become friends- even cobbling together a truce with Jazz, Chief Constable Wyatt Hightower’s cat familiar!
As this is the second book in the series, we start to learn a bit more about the other residents of the town, adding to the cosy feel of it all. The mystery itself was entertaining, and even solvable by the eagle eyed armchair detective. I’m looking forward to seeing where it heads next, and what changes might be in store for the Funeral Home Coven!
This was a diverting, cosy read, that fans of cosy paranormal and cosy mystery will enjoy.
These books are very enjoyable and fun to read. I was expecting the grand daughter to be the point and star of this book, but little Hailey is far away and a very naughty little witch she is too, which is funny. Even though Hazel is given advice her daughter is a bit jealous and put out that her daughter has talent she hasn't got, she doesn't do a lot about it.
Hazel learns she is a particular type of witch and she and Wyatt are warming up nicely. There is the Mayor who is Hazel's school bully and a suspect, various new people, including one called Newton who is a shifter frog and more witches she has not met before. Hazel pulls at the mystery and does eventually solve it. An unpopular dies and it is murder in this, in working why, Hazel and her coven pull together. Hazel is more with it in this one and doing well. Her business is thriving, although the funeral home still needs more TLC and money. There is another ghost introduced but that's more of a side line, but it's a theory at the moment. It is a nice book, mostly about how friends can help each other.
I really enjoyed reading Divination and Deceit, Crones of a feather book 2 by Beth Dolgner. I am really enjoying this new series with the older characters, it's enjoyable to read and I'm really loving our characters and their familiars. The progression with the characters is great to see play out, I love how they are all connecting and coming into their own. Hazel's progression with her magic is an interesting sideline and I'm excited to see where that will take her. The murder mystery was a great storyline and I loved how it all unravelled. Hazel's problem solving is great, she's like Jessica Fletcher but with magic! I love Beth Dolgner's writing style, each book pulls you in and I just find them so cosy to read. Definitely recommend this series and her other novels.
A quick easy cozy read with a little witchy magic thrown in. I enjoyed the growing friendship and trust between the 4 roommates as they worked together to both help other people but also solve the murder mystery. There was more magic in this one than in Book 1 and also more about the bird familiars each witch has (thus Crones of a Feather). It's nice to see Hazel slowly come into her magic and learn how to calm down and recognize trigger points. A very slow burn but building relationship between Hazel and the Chief (Wyatt) is at least becoming less antagonistic. Also, some positive growth with Hazel's daughter and granddaughter as they work together for the granddaughter's control on her magic. A tiny reveal about a potential 2nd ghost at the funeral home too! I will read Book 3.
No shortage of suspects, frozen peas and humor! Hazel and her house mates find themselves pulled in to trying to find out who killed a council member. There are a few who believe in reading frozen peas in leu of tea leaves. No shortage of imagination when it comes to the writings of Beth Dolgner. The characters come alive and trying to solve who the murderer is before the end is impossible. Living in a renovated mortuary and driving a hearse to offer delivery services shows the creativity of this author. Dead Easy Delivery not only delivers packages, but with Hazel and her coven behind the wheel, it delivers a delightful journey to Foxfire Haven.
Good quality, well written story that has that feel good ending. The characters are peppy, interesting and the town is unusual enough to make me want to visit. Beth Dolgner is a talented writer in the way the reader becomes a part of the story line, I really felt like I knew the characters. Recommended reading by a favorite author. The witches and their familiars were entertaining, the "House" you have to see for your self and the transport a hoot.

I was happy to be back in the world of Jo, Hazel, Marlee, and Valerian because I just love great female relationships, and I think these four have a great one. Add in a small town, a sort of romance (there really isn’t any, and I might just be projecting LOL!), and a murder, and I had a great time reading this. I can’t wait to see where the two side mysteries still left in this go, so I’m ready to read the next in the series. I’d like a little more magic, but that’s just a personal preference. Recommend. I was provided a complimentary copy which I voluntarily reviewed.
Really adore the friendship of the ladies. Each has their own quirky enchanted personality. A council member has been murdered and Hazel is trying to stay out of it but clues keep revealing themselves. Who did it and why? Was it the other witches who were warning him? Was it the mayor? Can Hazel help figure out the killer? Really enjoyed this story.
Hazel and her friends have another murder to figure out. This one involves the local political machine, & a few people Hazel knew growing up. The process of going through the very large list of suspects is, at times, hilarious, and fascinating. It's also the kind of mystery that you can't figure out 'til the end! I really love this new series!
I love that Hazel, Jo, Valerian and Marlee have found each other and formed a coven! Such a lovely and tight-knit group of friends! Perkins is adorable! Very fun read with humorous moments that made me giggle! The mystery was engaging and kept me guessing til the end! I thoroughly enjoyed reading an advance copy of the book and these are my opinions.
The Crones have another mystery to solve, this time it involves frozen peas! This is a fun, cozy book with a lot of heart. The mystery keeps you interested so you have to keep reading! Good book!
I’m a huge fan of Beth Dolgner ! She writes the most amazing books. I’m really enjoying this new series. I would recommend all of her books to anyone who has not read them. This is definitely a five star book.
The coven helps solve the murder of a councilman, who liked to throw his weight around. They also grow as a coven, and she learns more about her abilities.
