I’m blown away by this incredible tale. I was totally enthralled by the writing, characters, and storyline.

Supernatural, fantastical, mysterious. This was a well rounded story full of surprises. A half demon inspector who can speak to the dead is called upon to investigate the murder of a nun. Readers will enter a brand new fictional land that harbours unfathomable darkness.

I’d love to read more books with Viridian and Keen, we’ll see if Daley has any plans for them to fight more evil.

Thank you to NetGalley, the author, and Angry Robot for a copy!

I really liked this. The cover was giving dark romance, but the actual story reminds me more of the TV show Evil mixed with Sherlock Holmes vibes. Nuns, demons, disappearing kids and murdered people. I hope there's more to this world because it's really intriguing and maybe we could even get some romance too 👀🏰🦹🏼‍♀️

I didn’t just eat this book up… I DEVOURED it. I saw nothing coming and just continuously wanted to keep reading.

Hero Viridian is the baddest bitch I know. I mean who doesn’t love a half-demon/half-human ex nun death speaker?! And Oleander Keen is pretty cool too.

My favorite quote: “Distrust is your greatest asset right now”

Thank you Angry Robot and Netgalley for allowing me to read this arc!!

A murdered nun, a half demon ex nun and her demon hunter partner. A murder mystery filled with demons, supernatural, betrayals set against a backdrop of class divide and perceptions of people and their backgrounds.

What happens when a pious religious town needs to be saved by half demon death speaker the town has condemned?

I really enjoyed the banter between Hero and Oleander and how both of them had to overcome their person predjudices and perceptions to work together to find the murderer and figure out the mysterious school and its purpose.

From the start, the reader is quickly introduced to the world created, one where the dead victims can be contacted by Death-Speakers to reveal crucial testimony about their attackers. The main focus is on one Death-Speaker in particular, billed as a half-demonic ex-nun arsonist and she’s great. I loved the contrast inherent in the world with the heavy angle of religion against investigation alongside a mysticism of it all as magic and potions are in play. Hero’s fellow investigator is a Demonslayer and very new to his promotion. It’s their character dynamic that shines through the book and catches the interest best.

While on the investigation side of things, I did call it early on but I still enjoyed the discovery of information and the red herrings as they were presented. But this did get tangled around the 70% mark as there was just too much misdirection in play for both the characters and the readers so it grew stale towards the end of the story.

I would definitely read more in this series.

Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for the ARC!

Quote: “Who would know best about Hell but a disgraced, half-demon ex-nun?”

The above quote sums up this book quite well. Inspector Hero Viridian is half demon/half human and happens to be an ex-nun. She’s been distrusted, tormented and abused all her life by those in her hometown of Havenside, for the simple fact of her demon blood. Except they don’t mind too much about that fact, if they need her ‘deathtalking’ skills to help solve the town’s murder mysteries.

So, when a beloved and popular nun is found murdered and mutilated, Hero must team up with demonhunter Keen, who himself has his own history with Havenside - one also of being pushed to the outside. They’re supposed to be mortal enemies except as their friendship grows they quickly discover they have more in common than they initially thought.

I did think initially that this book was going to be romantasy but to be clear, it is not. However I did still thoroughly enjoy following Hero and Keen around Havenside as they attempted to untangle a very large, very dramatic mystery linked to missing children and a murdered nun. Their dynamic ended up being the real highlight for me. Their rapport carried the story, and I found myself increasingly invested and looking forward to seeing what mischief they got themselves into each time. They seemed to save each other from themselves which we then saw how quiet respect built between them.

I’m giving it 3.5 stars because I found the dialog at times a little inconsistent and the character’s decisions sometimes seemed out of character. I also wanted more world-building out of ‘Hell’ and wanted to understand more about how that worked. I wasn’t 100% sure about the ‘rules’ or magic system and this is usually what I enjoy most in a fantasy book.

Overall, the book won me over. I loved watching Hero and Keen’s partnership evolve, appreciated that the plot avoided some of the heavier genre clichés, and genuinely enjoyed the mystery and adventure along the way!

REVIEW
Thanks to Netgalley and the publisher for this ARC. I voluntarily read and reviewed an advanced copy of this book. All thoughts and opinions are my own.

STORYLINE :
A very, very good storyline; it was perfection! I've never read something like this before. I like reading books with new concepts and I like them even more when they deliver what they're supposed to deliver. This book over-delivered, and I loved everything about it.
We have a disgraced ex-nun, now an inspector death speaker, Hero, who was called to her hometown to solve the murder in a respected school, Clementine Prep. In addition, we have fresh off the mill Demon Hunter, Oleander Keen, who's eager to solve the first case out of the trainee program. They were both tasked to solve a difficult murder of a nun.
The storyline was good and perfectly paced. The partners turned over all stones, whether human or demons, to solve this case. I also liked the side storylines of both MCs' private lives. It was necessary and just as good.
I liked that the ending was a good one. I would have been annoyed if it was ambiguous.

CHARACTERS:
My favourite things about the characters in this book were their development. The characters I read about in the first chapter were not the same as I read in the last chapter.
We have our infamous FMC, Inspector Hero Viridia, who's half demon and half human. She's had to live her whole life being ostracised because of who she is and what she had no control over. She's had no one in her corner for so long. Yet, she grew up to be an upstanding woman. She's lovable and isn't blackened by the trauma of her life. She's also a good inspector and death speaker.
The MMC, Oleander Keen, a fresh Demon Hunter Graduate, who in the beginning was all duty and pomp and nothing else. He couldn't think on his own, but that changed for the better as the book progressed. He was brave and contributed a lot to the solving of the case.

WRITING STYLE:
It was fast and well described. I have no complaints

SETTINGS:
The setting is a fictional one with a mixture of contemporary, steampunk, religious fiction genres. And, it was perfect! We've got the Church with nuns, religious orders, fathers, bishops, hell, pandemonium, demons. Then, we have demon hunters who are like the police officers and death speakers who speak with the recently deceased to find out details about their murder. It was a well balanced settings with good descriptions. Very good!

OVERALL:
I like reading books with new concepts and I like them even more when they deliver what they're supposed to deliver. This book over-delivered, and I loved everything about it. I enjoyed Hero and Keen's story, and I really hope this is a series because I've not gotten my fill of the characters and the world-building. I would definitely recommend it!

Sarah J. Daley has very quickly become an auto-buy author for me, and The Violently Departed did not disappoint. It is a fast-paced, well developed, gripping murder mystery that has more twists and turns than a waltzer! Plus you’ve got a demon hunter, a half-demon death speaker, Hell in Earth and all the dark academia vibes your gruesome heart could want!

Be warned, this is a very dark story with a number of themes that some may find triggering.

One of the things I really liked about this dark, thrilling murder-mystery is that the investigators were investigating partners with absolutely zero romantic interaction. Inspector Hero Viridian, is a half-demon death-speaker who works for the police investigating murders and First Rank Demon Oleander Keen is a demon hunter.

Hero knows that she is seen as an outcast in society and strives to be recognised for her work and refuses to give space to the vitriol, disgust and hate of those around her. She has confidence and faith in herself, her skills and abilities and refuses to let others diminish her. Keen is from the Otherside of town, having grown up as a child with less and being dependent on the charity of others, he follows the rules, believes in procedure and hunts demons.

As you can imagine this pairing of a half-demon and demon hunter is interesting to say the least as opposites are forced to work together and act in complete opposition to their nature and training. The development of their partnership dynamic is wonderful to watch, from opposition to a melding of skills and capabilities and in the most unexpected way, a meeting of minds, united in their determination to fight evil and save the town of Havenside, in spite of its best efforts.

Daley’s writing, plot development and world building are so well executed that it is easy to get the lie of the land, the social and police politics, and the layers of Havenside from top to bottom. I could envisage the sneers of society and the restrictions and control of the schools. Amidst this the plot flowed effortlessly, with twists that totally took me by surprise and the banter that developed between Oleander and Leen was just perfect.

Much as I would love to fill you in on the story and plot that Daley crafted with such skill and dexterity, to do so would only ruin what is an amazing, immersive and gripping thriller that you will not be able to put down!

Thank you Angry Robot and NetGalley for this arc in exchange for my honest and unbiased review.

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ 4.7/5

“Murder was a stranger to quiet Havenside. Not so to Hero Viridian. To her, murder was a close friend indeed.”

I have to start with the cover, dark, intriguing, and instantly pulling you in.
Make sure to check the trigger warnings at the beginning of the book.

This did not disappoint. I haven’t read a properly gripping, fast paced murder mystery in a while, and this delivered.
Nuns, demon hunters, a death speaker, murder, demon kind, pandemonium, peace keepers, dark academia vibes… we get everything.

We meet Inspector Hero Viridian, a death speaker and half demon. She’s worked hard to be recognised for her talent and to command respect in a world that already judges her. Seen as an outcast, even disgraced, yet no one really sees how much she strives for justice and what is right.
I loved Hero. She’s not someone you want to mess with. Completely unapologetic, she shrugs off the sneers and disgust thrown her way and just keeps moving forward. Her confidence and willingness to work with Keen added so much to the story.

Then we have First Rank Demon Oleander Keen, a demon hunter from the Otherside of town. He follows procedure, trusts his training, and does everything by the book. His instinct is to hunt demon kind, so being forced to work alongside Hero goes completely against that.
He’s such a likeable character. There’s a quiet confidence in him, and you can see how he starts to recognise the similarities between them. Even as a newer investigator, he’s unwavering in his duty and has his partner’s back.

Watching the partnership between Hero and Keen develop was one of my favourite parts. The dynamic worked so well, both bringing something different, yet equally important, to the investigation.

And the investigation itself is anything but simple. The murders in Havenside unravel into something far more layered and unpredictable than expected.

This was such a unique story. The world building was strong without being overwhelming, easy to follow and immersive. The writing made it effortless to visualise the scenes and action, and the pacing kept me hooked throughout. I genuinely just wanted to keep reading.
I thoroughly enjoyed this, I devoured it 😬

If you like dark, intriguing stories with fantasy elements, banter, mystery, and plot twists, definitely pick this up.

Thank you Angry Robot, NetGalley, and Sarah J Daley for providing me with an ARC in exchange for an honest review.

“The Violently Departed” by Sarah J. Daley is an absolutely magnificent, must-read novel for those who love the supernatural/fantasy, intense action scenes that entice one’s inner ninja, and a good ‘ole murder mystery with a witty half-demon as the lead investigator.

A nun is murdered at an elite school, and it’s believed that a demon is involved. One of the best investigators is hired to solve the case: Hero Viridian, a half-demon, ex-nun-turned-investigator. After all, who’s a better fit than a woman with something to prove, eyes that burn like literal fire, and who has direct access to hell?

The only problem: all the people she’s relying on for help have turned against her, and the only person she can rely on is her unexpected partner, Oleander Keen, a Demonhunter who’s already tried to kill her once.

This book exceeded all expectations in the best way possible. Despite the grim subject matter, there’s a lot of humour and witty banter that makes the pages fly by. Who knew a half-demon, ex-nun would have a wicked sense of humour? Paired with Keen, who is more serious and eager to prove his worth, the two of them clash more often than not, yet they’re a lethal team—when they can agree on something.

The murder mystery is intriguing because there are so many complex parts and players that it’s impossible to guess who may be involved and what the endgame is. Every time it feels like someone is obviously guilty, something happens that leads to another likely suspect, making it hard to figure out who has a hand in the nun’s death. A lot of the investigation takes place at the school, which has its own secrets, adding a dark academia vibe to the demon hunt.

The world-building was incredibly done, immersing readers into the creatures of hell and magic systems without feeling overwhelmed or confused. It was fun to meet other demonic creatures, ones that weren’t purely evil but complex in their own way. This added to the overall enjoyment of reading the story.

Daley brilliantly weaves fantasy, dark academia, and a murder mystery together, giving equal weight to each genre. The pacing moves quickly but still allows for an easy comprehension of the plot. Hopefully, this won’t be the last of Hero Viridian and Oleander Keen. “The Violently Departed” is expected to be published on April 28, 2026. Thank you to NetGalley and Angry Robot for the free e-arc and the opportunity to share my honest opinion in this review.

Half Demon to the Rescue

The Violently Departed

Sarah J Daley

Angry Robot Books

28th April 2026

Hero Viridian – half-demon - has served ten years in prison for arson and is now a disgraced, ex-nun, working as an inspector. She’s a level-one death speaker and her clothes are a mockery of a Celestial nun’s; the nuns that ‘raised’ her – if it could be called that.

She’s been sent to her old hometown Havenside to investigate the murder of Sister Caterine from Clementine Preparatory.

Unfortunately for both of them, she’s unwillingly partnered with Demonhunter  Oleander Keen a recently graduated PK – Peacekeeper.

He’s a wee bit naive, green under the collar but determined to do right. Even if the first encounter with his new partner has him using his blunderbuss.

This is a wonderful alternate Nineteenth Century, Holmesian, Dark Academia supernatural crime novel. Yes – all of it!

But as this ‘odd couple’ investigation team burrow deeper into their queries, they find barriers on every side. And they share more in common than either of them first realised.

They’re both from the ‘Otherside’ of town and face prejudice as a result, though Viridian faces the extra scorn of her demon heritage. As she notes; ‘Her chains might be invisible now, but they were there, nonetheless.’

She may be an inspector now but she has little independence or financial security. Just enough to live.

The friendship that grows and the switch from insult duels to banter is fantastic fun.

There’s skulduggery, violence, blood, betrayals, battles, laughter and friendship. The sub plots where we meet Ruth and Molly are great, and I admit I’m a fan of Hero’s birth father.

If you like Lisa Tuttle’s Jesperson and Lane books and Lilith Saintcrow’s Bannon and Clare series, I think you’ll like this.

However, if you like your ‘Hero/es’ full of snark, bite, growls and attitude, you’ll love it.

I can’t wait for more of Viridian’s adventures.

I was surprised by how much I ended up liking this book. Although it’s not usually my cup of tea, I was intrigued enough by the concept, to give it a try, and while it had some elements I didn’t love, I found myself having fun reading it. The adventures of Hero and Keen solving this grand mystery were enjoyable, and their rapport was a highlight. As the book progressed, I found myself genuinely intrigued by the mystery and always wanting to know more. That said, there were a few aspects that didn’t quite work for me.

In terms of what I didn’t like, I’d say the main issue was some inconsistency in the characters’ behavior. At times, their actions or dialogue felt odd or uncharacteristic, almost as if their personalities were being turned up to eleven in ways that didn’t fit the moment. Some scenes shifted tone too abruptly, and there were a few decisions that seemed counterintuitive to what the characters were trying to accomplish. While I can see how some of this might connect to their growth arcs, not all of it landed for me.
My other gripe was with the worldbuilding. I wish it had been more developed, especially around the world’s history or how demons and magic function. That said, it might just be the result of this being an introductory book in what could be a larger series.

Ultimately, though, the story accomplished what it set out to do. Even though I was hesitant at first, it gradually won me over. I especially ended up loving the interactions between Hero and Keen, their growing synergy, and the fact that the plot avoided the heavier tropes or clichés that often appear in this kind of story. This isn’t normally my genre, but I enjoyed the mystery, the character interplay, and the adventure. If you like Dark Academia or detective-style fantasies, I think you’ll find a lot to appreciate here.

The Violently Departed by Sarah J. Daley is a dark, atmospheric thriller that leans heavily into grief, mystery, and the unsettling spaces between truth and memory.

From the start, there’s an eerie, almost haunting tone that runs through the story. Daley does an excellent job building a sense of unease, layering tension slowly so that it seeps into every part of the narrative. It’s less about constant action and more about the creeping realization that something isn’t right—and that made it all the more compelling.

The emotional core of the book is rooted in loss, and I appreciated how deeply that was explored. The main character’s grief feels raw and consuming, shaping the way they see the world and interact with others. This added a strong psychological element to the story, making it as much about internal conflict as it is about uncovering what really happened.

The mystery itself unfolds gradually, with clues revealed in a way that keeps you questioning what’s real and what might be distorted by trauma or perception. While some twists were more subtle than shocking, they fit the tone of the story and contributed to its overall sense of unease.

The pacing is a slow burn, particularly in the first half, which may not work for everyone. There are moments where the narrative lingers in introspection, but for me, that added to the depth and emotional weight of the story.

Daley’s writing is vivid and immersive, with a slightly lyrical quality that enhances the haunting atmosphere. It’s the kind of book that draws you in quietly and then stays with you long after you’ve finished.

Overall, The Violently Departed is a gripping and emotionally layered thriller that prioritizes mood and character over fast-paced twists. It’s a great choice for readers who enjoy darker, more introspective mysteries with a strong psychological edge.

This book was a ride and I am here for it!!

It introduces us to Hero Viridian, a disgraced ex-nun half-demon who works as an investigator with literal flaming eyes and a direct line to hell 🔥

The story begins when a missing nun from a wealthy seaside community, Havenside, where Hero grew up in, is found dead in the woods, covered in the unmistakable stench of demonic interference.

Forced to solve the murder, Hero must navigate a town full of secrets and a mysterious, elite academy that seems to have appeared out of thin air. To get to the truth, she has to form an incredibly tense partnership with Oleander Keen, a professional demon hunter who tries to kill her in their first encounter.
As they dig deeper, they realize the school (Bright Renewal Academy) is at the center of a much larger conspiracy involving missing children and an ancient, soul-hungry evil that Hero recognizes all too well.

The book works so well because it balances a gritty "buddy-cop" dynamic with a deeply atmospheric setting. Hero is a fantastic protagonist; complex, ferocious and deeply relatable in her struggle to prove her worth in a world that sees her as a monster.
Her relationship with Keen provides a sharp, witty edge to the narrative, turning their mutual distrust into a reluctant but effective alliance.

Daley’s prose is slick and fast-paced, successfully mixing the classic elements of a whodunnit with a high-stakes fantasy world that feels both dangerous and lived-in. It is a stylish, darkly delightful read that manages to be equal parts "Sherlock Holmes, Ninth House and John Constantine", offering a fresh take on the genre that keeps you hooked until the final page.

Peacekeepers, death speakers, half-demon arsonists, demon hunters, and suspicious nuns. Not your average Tuesday, but absolutely my kind of fantasy

The Violently Departed drops you into a world that feels simultaneously ancient and unsettlingly futuristic: primitive in its prejudices, dystopian in its social architecture. The worldbuilding has that uncomfortable double-take quality, the kind that makes you wonder whether the monsters are really the point.

At the centre of it all is DI Hero Viridian: half-demon, ex-nun, disgraced arsonist, death speaker, and dressed like a fever dream. She is the ultimate other, and Daley leans into that in the queerest, most gloriously radical way. The prejudice Hero faces from her own colleagues is relentless and visceral. The muttered prayers, the averted eyes, the people who can barely function in her presence. It makes you think, uncomfortably and pointedly, about everyone else navigating a world that was never built with them in mind.

Then there’s Oleander Keen: demon hunter, dandy, and absolutely not ready for Hero Viridian. Their trajectory from he literally tried to kill her to reluctant partnership is one of the book’s great pleasures. Buddy-cop energy, but make it gothic, cloistered, and academically sinister.

What really elevates this beyond a fun fantasy romp is the rot beneath the gilded surface. The villains aren’t just supernatural, they’re systemic. A dead nun and a school built on secrets open the door to something much older and darker.

Fast, atmospheric, sharply written, and occasionally hellish in the best possible way. Highly recommend.

Thanks to NetGalley and Angry Robot for the arc.

This one pulled me in with its dark, eerie premise and didn’t let go. A murdered nun, a town soaked in secrets, and a half-demon ex-nun investigator with literal fire in her eyes? Say less.

The atmosphere is easily one of the strongest parts of this story. There’s a constant sense of unease like something sinister is always lurking just beneath the surface. The haunted town setting, mixed with the religious undertones and demonic elements, creates a gritty, almost oppressive vibe that really works.

Hero Viridian is such a compelling main character. She’s flawed, guarded, and carrying a lot of emotional weight, which makes her feel real despite the supernatural edge. Her internal struggle between who she was, what she’s become, and how others see her adds a strong emotional layer to the story.

The dynamic between Hero and Oleander Keen was another highlight for me. The tension, the distrust, the forced alliance… it adds just the right amount of edge and unpredictability. You never quite know where things will land between them, and that kept me hooked.

The mystery itself unfolds at a steady pace, with enough twists and reveals to keep things interesting without feeling overdone. It leans more into atmosphere and character than nonstop action, which I personally enjoyed, though it might feel a bit slow for readers looking for something faster-paced.

Overall, this is a dark, moody supernatural thriller with a strong lead, an intriguing partnership, and a setting that practically breathes dread. Definitely worth picking up if you love your mysteries with a demonic twist and a heavy dose of atmosphere.

Thank you so much to the author and publisher for a #gifted ecopy!

Hero Viridian is a half demon, disgraced ex nun turned investigator working for the Peacekeepers, most of whom have a vendetta against demons of any sort. When a missing nun is found murdered with her tongue ripped out, and a student at the school she taught at apparently throws herself from the bell tower, Hero is called in to use her special skills. She is able to speak to the souls of those recently deceased. However, when she attempts to speak to the nun, her soul is simply gone. With the help of an unlikely partner, Oleander Keen, first class demon hunter, Hero is drawn into the investigation and is determined to seek out the truth, even when those who originally looked to her for help have turned against her. Something incredibly dark is going on and it seems that only Hero and Oleander are immune to whatever it is.
I absolutely loved this! Despite it actually having quite dark themes (demons and murder!!!) it actually turned out to be a pretty fun read. Hero is one of the best characters I’ve ever come across. She knows who she is, she knows why people dislike and distrust her, and she quite frankly doesn’t really care. As long as she can do her job, other peoples opinions don’t matter to her at all. The relationship she has with Oleander is brilliant too. He is quite obviously aware she is part demon and teaming up with her goes against all his training, but he is determined to make their partnership work even if she does call him squirrel. In return, knowing he is as green as grass, Hero is set on working with him to the best of his abilities, but doesn’t shy away from teaching him a thing or two along the way. This relationship they begin to develop goes a long way to providing some comic relief from the fairly serious nature of the rest of the book. While this does wrap up the story entirely, it doesn’t feel like there is potential for further books involving this odd pairing, and I genuinely hope there is more to come! This was a slightly genre bending combination of thriller, horror and dark academia, but this combo works perfectly together and is definitely worth the read!

When a young, popular nun is found dead outside her Abbey, a swift conclusion is of utmost importance. Havenside is a wealthy, pious town and the case of a dead nun is not something anyone wants lingering over them. Enter Inspector Death Speaker Hero Viridian - sent to oversee investigation and bring it to a swift conclusion. Despite her...unpopularity...Viridian has specialised skills and some local knowledge but it soon becomes clear that all is not as it seems.

OK - a half-demon, ex-nun, arsonist who can speak to the dead gets paired with a fresh-faced recently graduated Demon Hunter? Yes please. I actually avoided reading this for a while because I thought I just wasn't feeling it - how wrong I was!

There is a lot going on in this book - demons, nuns, a stark rich/poor divide, eldritch horror, I could go on - but it's never overwhelming. A a reader I always knew how thing linked together, who was who and how the layers of the case were unfolding. Our lead characters Hero and Keen are almost caricatures at first but they soften and become more believable as the story goes on, and I was definitely really invested in their partnership.

The writing is a touch immature at times, not annoyingly so but there were definitely moments where I would have liked a little more depth. Aside from Hero, Keen and Abigail most of the characters were quite forgettable although I have high hopes of returning to this world to see how some of them develop. The plot was twistier than I expected though there were no great reveals.

Hugely enjoyable fantasy horror, I really hope to see more from this author soon.

I love a paranormal book and I love a crime thriller, so I’m surprised I’ve never combined the two! But this was an additive read, with a dark and eerie atmosphere, and lots of fun demon shenanigans!

🔥💀🔥💀🔥💀

Synopsis:
Hero is a half demon, ex-nun, who now solves murders by speaking to the dead. Keen is a trained demonhunter, looking to prove himself.

When a nun turns up dead, Hero and Keen are both called to the town they grew up in to solve the murder. And their new partnership is made tricky by Keen trying to kill Hero upon meeting.

But they have to put their differences aside when they uncover a darker threat to the town.

🔥💀🔥💀🔥💀

Themes : Unlikely allies ; Demon detective and demon hunter ; Dark small town secrets ; Missing kids ; Creepy school ; Corrupt Nuns.

🔥💀🔥💀🔥💀

As a big paranormal romance reader, it was nice to mix things up and read a non romantic crime thriller. Although I loved the unexpected friendship that sparked between Hero and Keen. They were both outcasts in very different ways, and I liked the belonging they found with one another.

And whilst I hadn’t expected the 3rd PoV of Molly, I really liked her addition to the story. It was nice to see things from a different side whilst the main characters were undertaking their investigation.

The overall plot of corruption and evil in the town was lots of fun. And I was excited to see how Keen and Hero would survive and save the town. It was very easy to get caught up in the story.

I would be intrigued to see Hero and Keen take on more adventures. Especially take down the bishop who we see at the end. And I feel there’s a lot more to see of this demonic world. Whilst he was terrible, I did find Silvinus very entertaining and would be keen to meet more demons!

The Violently Departed is an absolute blast—moody, clever, and packed with the kind of energy that makes you want to devour just one more chapter. Sarah J. Daley blends crime fiction, dark academia, and supernatural fantasy into a story that feels fresh, fast, and wonderfully character‑driven.

Hero Viridian is the standout here: a half‑demon, ex‑nun investigator with literal fire in her eyes and a chip on her shoulder the size of the haunted town she’s trying to protect. She’s prickly, vulnerable, and wildly compelling, the kind of protagonist who makes even the quiet moments crackle. The murder of a missing nun pulls her into a web of secrets surrounding an eerie school, a town steeped in old magic, and a past she can’t quite outrun.

The dynamic between Hero and Oleander Keen—a Demonhunter who once tried to kill her and now might be her only ally—is one of the book’s biggest strengths. Their reluctant partnership brings a fun, buddy‑cop spark to the darker elements of the story, balancing tension with sharp banter and uneasy trust.

Daley’s worldbuilding is seamless: atmospheric without ever slowing the pace, full of haunted corners, whispered histories, and the sense that danger is always just out of sight. The plot moves quickly, but never at the expense of character or mood, and the blend of mystery and magic keeps the stakes high and the pages turning.

Darkly delightful, smartly written, and anchored by a heroine you can’t help rooting for, The Violently Departed is a fantastic pick for readers who love supernatural mysteries with grit, heart, and a touch of hellfire.

thank you to netgalley & the publisher for this arc!!

this was a book that i don't typically go for but it ended up being right up my alley. an ex-nun turned deathspeaker was just so intriguing to me and it really paid off. the premise of the story was so unique and the murder mystery aspect had a different twist to it that made it super fun to read. i loved reading from a different perspective, such as children in schools with nuns and the investigation aspects with the police. they really made the plot move quicker because you were intrigued to see how they would blend together.

this book was super entertaining. it had two witty main characters that had such interesting povs you couldn't help reading more for. hero had such a fresh personality that was both sarcastic and nonchalant. she was suchhh a vibe. her powers were something that i haven't come across much in other books which i thought was a fun new experience. her jokes and overall demeanour made her so likable that she made the book that much better.

the whole mystery killer was quite obvious but keen made me consider docking off a star from my review just from his pure idiocy throughout the whole book. he was kind of unlikable and made everything worse but alas, hero made up for it all. the book did have some nice twists and turns that caught me unaware so i did appreciate that.

it's a pretty gritty and gory novel with a fair share of triggers that were described in detail so i would advise readers to be mindful. however, for what it was, it was super unique and a very enjoyable read regardless. i'd love if there were more to hero's story since she's got so much to show to the world!

3.5/5

Amazing book all around! I couldn’t stop reading it, and I’m in love with the female main character Hero Viridian! Such a cool badass, but I’ll describe her in her own words from the book: “I am not just an inspector death speaker disgraced ex-nun arsonist half-demon”. I mean, if this doesn’t make you pick up this book straight away, I don’t know what will.

The whole world building is fascinating and whilst the plot is gripping and suspenseful, with a complex murder to investigate, I have to say that what really makes this book is the dynamic between the two unconventional partners. Demonhunter Oleander Keen and half-demon Hero Viridian are quite the pair, but so entertaining, fun and unpredictable.

The plot is intriguing, full of secrets, twists and betrayals; plus, who doesn’t like a religious thriller full of supernatural elements? I must admit, I didn’t get to solve the murder, but to be honest I didn’t really want to because I was having too much fun engrossed in the story!

Underlying all of this, the story is actually quite meaningful, dealing with the rejection for not conforming to the norm, with greed and lust for power clouding our judgement, not letting us see what’s right in front of us, but it is also about privilege and how it can literally bring doom and ruin. And most of all, how religion can be used to manipulate and hide nefarious behaviours, all under a falsely righteous cause.

I don’t think I can praise this book enough. It also has one of the best opening lines I’ve ever read! If you love supernatural thrillers with a religious setting and a great duo as main protagonists, then add this to your tbr!

Thanks to the author and Angry Robot Books for a copy and this is my honest opinion.

I received an eARC from NetGalley for a free and unbiased opinion.
I really enjoyed Obsidian ( click here for my review), so I was looking forward to reading Sarah J Daley’s latest offering, and it didn’t disappoint. Each book she writes is completely different, not just in content but also genre and The Violently Departed is a great urban fantasy.
All the elements just work. Hero, the almost antihero- a half demon, arsonist ex nun and Keen, the very human demon hunter and former charity scholarship student at a posh academy run by nuns are the perfect point of view characters. The friendship and partnership that gently forms is the heart of the story and eventually they both bring out the ‘hero’ in each of them.
The ‘baddies’ are all too familiar with a touch of the demonic- the very rich in society and the people in the upper classes as well as nuns who abuse their positions in power and of course a few unexpected bad ones as well.
The core of the story is a murder mystery, who killed the beloved nun and why. Hero and Keen uncover a sordid tale of corruption and evil. The plot is fast paced with plenty of twists and magic and weird magic. There is more humour in this book than her others which I loved.
The worldbuilding is familiar and not particularly original but forms a relatable background to the main and supporting characters- I loved Keen’s mum!.
Content warning
But there are some harrowing parts with children being mistreated that may be difficult for some readers. References to rape.

4/5 Stars — Murder, Magic, and... Nuns

Honestly, I was skeptical about a half-demon, half-nun investigator. Sounds like a weird fanfic. But I stuck with it and The Violently Departed won me over in the end. It’s a pretty fun blend of mystery and fantasy, and I ended up liking the main characters, Hero & Oleander, even if their internal monologues and second guesses would get on my nerves when I clearly knew what they needed to do.

I totally guessed one of the twists early on, but thank god there was another one I didn't see coming. I love getting got.

My only gripe? I need to know more about this world. We've got demonhunters, we've got nuns, we've got a town that has classism segregation, we've got magic, we've got horse/carriages, we've got creatures trying to escape Hell. Is everywhere like this?

Give me a map next time, please. Actually, don't. I never look at those in fantasy books. They put them in the beginning and I immediately get overwhelmed, turn the page, and forget that it's there. But overall, a solid read.

Recommended for: People who love a historical-adjacent (again, horse/carriage vibes) fantasy mystery and don't mind a story that weaves in religious elements with a creative twist. Devout folks might want to skip this one.

Thank you to Angry Robot and NetGalley for the opportunity to read this ARC!

3.5 stars

This is not the kind of book I would usually go for but I was intrigued! A half-demon ex-nun who can speak to the dead has to team up with a demonhunter to untangle a mystery featuring a dead nun and missing children and a mysterious school. I loved the different perspectives that the author gave us, showing us all angles of the investigation. The plot didn't drag during these perspectives either and everything kept moving.

This book was fun and entertaining. The two main characters had great chemistry with each other and played off each other well. I really loved their scenes and their interactions and I think they were the strongest part of the book. I also particularly loved the worldbuilding here, but I would've loved to have seen more of it. I feel like every time we walked up to the edge of more worldbuilding the story jumped forward or something happened.

I'm also knocking off some points for some inconsistent dialogue choices that don't quite match up to the characters intentions and I wanted more worldbuilding! But overall, this was a fun, entertaining read and I do recommend checking it out.

Thank you to angry robot books and Netgalley for my copy.

Well that was a hell of a rollercoaster read, full of twists, turns, conspiracies and discrimination. With powerful forces at work trying to cover up and misdirect everyone's attention and deep seated prejudices and discrimination hampering the investigation. It was addictive reading and I couldn't put it down. Hero and Keen were chef's kiss perfect, both characters felt fully fleshed out and you couldn't help but feel empathic to each of them as the story goes on. I am begging the author to please let this be the start of a series as I really want more of these two.

Hero is a half human, half demon arsonist ex nun Death Speaker and Keen is a Demon Hunter, First Class thrown together as very reluctant partners when the body of a nun is discovered and the circumstances scream that it wasn't a normal death. Unable to find her soul, Hero is forced to investigate the old fashioned way with Keen. Together they are faced with discrimination against demons and doors barred from the wealthy elite that run the town. A death of a student quickly follows and the trail blazes hot as they desperately search for answers. So much happens that I just can't spoil but I can't recommend this one highly enough, I absolutely loved it.

I love mysteries and crime thrillers set in fantasy or sci-fi worlds and this one was fantastic. The main character, Hero Veridian, is a half-demon ex-nun who served 10 years in jail for arson before taking a job as a police investigator due to her ability to speak to the dead. It's a dark, twisty and gritty story with demons, prejudiced and corrupt religious institutions, and generally just a lot of people acting so badly that you'll probably be furious reading about all the injustice that occurs.

The combination of the plot and the pairing of Hero and her new investigative partner Oleander Keen, a demonhunter, had me racing through. It isn't a romance, not at this stage anyway, although with a pair of opposites-attract detectives, it's always possible in the future. The Violently Departed doesn't end on a cliffhanger, and does tell a complete story, but it definitely leaves the door open for more books in this world. I really hope there are more books to come because I am so invested in Hero and Oleander's developing partnership and in seeing them solve more crimes and tackle more corruption.

I came for the dark academia and the "battle-nun" premise, but I stayed for the absolute masterclass in character dynamics.
The heartbeat of this book is the relationship between Hero Viridian and Oleander Keen. If you love a high-stakes, "enemies-to-uneasy-allies" setup, this is going to be your new obsession. The chemistry between them is incredibly suspenseful—it’s that sharp, jagged kind of tension where you aren't sure if they’re going to save each other or destroy each other.
What really impressed me was how both characters kept evolving. Hero isn’t just a "tough" protagonist; she’s layered, guarded, and watching her walls slowly come down is so satisfying. Likewise, seeing Oleander’s rigid worldview shift as he deals with Hero felt earned and authentic. It’s rare to find a supernatural thriller where the emotional growth is just as gripping as the mystery itself.

If you want a story where the characters feel like living, breathing people who actually change and react to the trauma around them, read this. I’m already desperate for the next installment just to see where Viridian and Keen go from here.

Overall, this book really won me over. While it’s not typically my go-to genre, the concept intrigued me enough to give it a try.

One of the strongest aspects of the story is the dynamic between Hero Viridian and Oleander Keen. Their partnership evolves naturally throughout the book, and their contrasting personalities bring a great balance to the investigation. The tension, banter, and gradual development of trust between them made their interactions genuinely engaging and, at times, the highlight of the story.
The mystery itself is more complex than it first appears. What begins as a seemingly straightforward murder in Havenside unfolds into something far more layered and unpredictable. I appreciated that the plot avoided some of the heavier clichés often found in this genre, which made the story feel fresher and more compelling. The pacing kept me engaged throughout, and I often found myself wanting to keep reading just to uncover the next piece of the mystery.

I found myself genuinely invested in the story, particularly in the character dynamics and the unfolding investigation.

Thank you Angrrobotbooks for the ARC!
