Absolutely tender, honest, and human. Bryan's exploration of grief, emotion, time, and connection created a well of empathy in my heart that I hope will remain for a long time. We really have so much in common in the human condition, which Bryan shows beautifully. His acceptance of himself will, goodness willing, inspire others to accept themselves as well.

This book is tender, brave, honest, and deeply moving. As a death doula, a Buddhist/meditation teacher/someone who has experienced sudden and devastating big loss, I cannot recommend this book enough. The content is not only invaluable for all humans navigating an imperfect, unpredictable, and impermanent world full of loss and change, but it’s presented in an accessible and authentic way. There are references to Buddhism and meditation but nothing is dogmatic, presumptuous, or judgmental. It’s a true offering from one human to the rest of us.

This book is a love letter from one grieving human to another. Bryan writes with candor, vulnerability, and gentleness about his experience of his son’s death and lessons he has learned. He frames these lessons as “gifts” but does not shy away from the pain of loss. He draws largely from Buddhist psychology regarding compassion, suffering, and the interconnectedness of all life. Images of nature are sources of reflection as Bryan draws on his life on the ranch. These images help illustrate with beautiful prose the experience of loss and the opportunities pain affords us to connect with one another.

As someone who professionally works with people in grief, this is a beautiful volume and well worth your read.
