Thomas describes the spiritual and coaching process by which he came to announce his retirement as the senior pastor of Mississippi Boulevard Christian Church after serving in pastoral ministry for thirty-one years. Follow Thomas' journey to make the choice to live his passion from the inside out, from several years of planning to his final Sunday and departure. The book illustrates, explains, and explores how you too can live your passion from the inside out.
This book ostensibly goes through the author's process of deciding to leave the ministry, promoting life-changing insight on the importance of getting a life coach and living inside-out. Unfortunately, it does so by including a number of sermons and reflective essays, which cause the book to have lack narrative flow or clear progression. Too little has been done to adapt the sermons to the book, so the readers are constantly switching context without much transition work. The sermons don't seem terribly on-point and the essays are fairly shallow, leaving the reader with little insight into the process beyond usual self-help platitudes. Further, there are a number of essays written so close to the events they describe that it's clear there has been little opportunity for reflecting on the outcomes, which made everything less persuasive. I'm not a big fan of self-help books, and this one did not succeed in convincing me that life coaching would be helpful to me (an express goal of the book).
There are some valuable nuggets of wisdom in this text. However, there are also some serious difficulties. I would say it is worth reading particularly because Pastor Thomas' journey can spark great conversation. Some of his sermons are good but the pairing of the sermons with where he was in his process is the real bread and butter of this text.
