This novel is a mildly dark romantic comedy. Ansel is a golden retriever that believes in love. He is persistent and patient. Taliah is afraid to commit to anything but an unexpected pregnancy and a cursed cat force her to come to terms with change and acceptance.
Unexpected Ruin was such a quick, addictive read. It pulled me in immediately and did not let go. This is a fast and furious love story in the best way — the kind where he falls first and falls HARD.
Our MMC? Absolutely down bad from the jump. Instant chemistry. Instant connection. He knows she’s it. No hesitation. No games. Just all in. Meanwhile, our FMC is more guarded, hesitant to open herself up, unsure if she’s ready to trust what feels almost too good to be true. But their chemistry? Undeniable from the very first look.
What I loved most was how heartwarming this story felt. Even when small bits of drama popped up, everything was handled so sweetly. There’s no drawn-out angst or chaotic misunderstandings — just two people navigating love in a way that feels safe and intentional.
And let’s talk about this man for a second.
He’s not a “book boyfriend.” He’s a book husband. The kind that melts you instantly. Protective, obsessed (in the swoony way), fully devoted. Completely unrealistic? Absolutely. Which is exactly why I love reading about him. He is the dream — the standard — the “this only exists in fiction and I’m okay with that” kind of man. He stole the entire show for me.
The spice? It starts early and it does not slow down. There is zero shortage of steam, but it’s playful and fun and fits their chemistry. It never felt forced — just an extension of how intensely they’re drawn to each other.
I also really enjoyed the side characters. His brothers and her best friend really start to shine in the second half, adding warmth and personality that makes the world feel fuller.
The challenges they face aren’t earth-shattering — and while that makes for a comforting, feel-good romance, I personally tend to crave just a bit more tension.
That said, this was a super cute, swoony, heart-melting love story that delivered exactly what it promised: obsession, chemistry, devotion, and spice. A solid four-star read for me.
And knowing the author’s fun, charismatic personality, I can absolutely see that charm reflected in her characters.

This is my first book from R.Thompson. It’s have to say that j enjoyed the chaos of the book. I enjoyed the authors use of worlds to describe a points within the story.
The banter between the characters had me rolling of our laughter. I truly enjoyed the FMC. Her character development can been seen as you read the book. The MMC was a little too soft for what I picture him to be. But honestly who wouldn’t want a partner that sees you.
Overall the book is a great and entertaining read. And the spice is spicing.
I just finished this book and it was a really good book I definitely recommend it to my friends and I gave it 5 stars because the story really hooks you from Start to finish I'm definitely looking forward to the 2nd book in her series
