Before Princess Diana became the most photographed woman in the world, there was Marilyn. Marilyn Monroe.
Marilyn would have turned 100 years old this past June (June 1, 2026). In celebration of that landmark birthday, Simon & Schuster published a remarkable look at Marilyn on a variety of subjects in her own words. Hard to believe, but she had final say on what was printed.
What is contained in this book is the full transcript of her last interview which has never been published in its entirety. Journalist Richard Meryman conducted the interview in July 1962 and portions of it were published in the August edition of LIFE Magazine. That issued dropped just two days before her death on August 4.
Marilyn discusses such topics as Fame, Personality, Money, Acting, Singing for JFK and much, much more. I could her hear breathless voice whispering in my ear as she bared her heart and soul to the public. I won’t say it was enlightening, but it was interesting. It’s the story of a woman coming into her own. One who was ready to take charge of her life and career.
As far as the photographs go, they were shot by celebrated LIFE photographer Allen Grant. Grant had trouble scheduling the shoot as Marilyn kept changing the appointment. But on July 5, 1962, Grant popped 400 plus photos of Marilyn in her living room. Marilyn also had final say in which of the photos would be used in the LIFE article.
The Marilyn-approved words and photos appeared in the August 3, 1962, issue. Those words and photographs, plus the ones that were not used, were tucked away by Meyer and Grant. I’m sure they were never forgotten by either man. I was surprised that they didn’t come out for other birth anniversaries like her 50th or 75th.
It wouldn’t be nice of me to quote Marilyn a lot here, as it would take away from other readers’ ability to have her whisper in their ears.
In Julie’s world, Marilyn: The Lost Photographs, the Last Interview receives 5 out of 5 stars.
