Whispers from the Lighthouse

Rate this book
Some secrets refuse to stay buried . . . even for twenty-five years.

When tourist Melissa Clark vanishes near Westerly Cove's historic lighthouse, Detective Brooks Harrington expects a routine missing person case. Instead, he's paired with Vivienne Hawthorne, a tea shop owner who claims her family can speak to the dead.

The case mirrors a twenty-five-year-old mystery—teenage Lily Morgan, who disappeared while researching the same lighthouse. Both women were asking dangerous questions about the town's buried secrets.

Vivienne's visions reveal corruption deeper than anyone imagined, but skeptical Brooks believes in evidence, not psychic abilities—until her insights lead him to clues logic couldn't uncover.

Racing against time, they must navigate their growing attraction while confronting enemies determined to keep Westerly Cove's darkest secrets buried forever.

Heidi McLaughlin has left me speechless. She has been my favorite romance writer for many years. But she is so much more. In my devouring Whispers from the Lighthouse she has become a favorite paranormal suspense author as well.

Whispers from the Lighthouse sucked me into to a small town with secrets going back generations. People have been disappearing for many, many years and it has been swept under the rug by the powers that be. There is something fishy going on and the citizens are turning a blind eye for fear they could be next.

Those responsible think they are safe. They are in power. They have money. They are part of the town history. They don't have the ability to silence the ghosts of the past. They can't keep the spirits from talking to Vivienne, the owner of The Tea Shop. They can't stop the visions she experiences.

The town has always known about her family. Some are not happy to see Vivienne's return to the town of Westerly Cove. They my have asked for assistance in the past, but not for help in finding those that disappeared at the lighthouse. Is there a town conspiracy keeping things quiet?

The victims can't be silenced forever. Vivienne hears the spirits. She just needs an anchor to keep her grounded. Detective Brooks Harrington's arrival isn't surprising to her She had visions of him coming to town. Her grandmother had had visions as well. They knew he would be important.

I did not see what they would have to deal with. The guilty will do anything to keep from being caught. Brooks will have to believe in Vivienne to survive. Brooks and Vivienne will face unexpected dangers. They will risk everything to save the innocent guided by those from the past.

This book was so different then what I normally read and I absolutely loved getting away from my norm.

Even though this book was different from the norm it did have a few elements of a budding relationship between Brooks and Vivienne. With it being mostly them working together to solve cases from the present and the past, you get to see how they are building their friendship, which is so much more (I could feel this in their interactions).

I loved the way that they both worked to solve cases in ways they worked best. Brooks being by the book and evidence, being that he is a detective. Vivienne with the help of spirits. Vivienne is able to make Brooks believe in her abilities and trust her instincts in a way that no one but her family has ever done.

The two of them together with the spirits are able to solve not just the present case of a missing women but that of multiple cases from Westerly Cove over the years. Will these two survive everything that is coming at them to be able to build a true relationship or will it end before they can truly find themselves as a couple.

The mix of paranormal with that of the suspense of the cases they are working kept me wanting to know more of the corruption, betrayal, and darkness that is woven into this story.

I can't wait to read more.

I had read the prequel novella for this series and that had me sucked in. I wasn't sure what this story was bringing other than the continued mystery of this small town's lighthouse, the deaths, the smuggling, the not so hidden secrets. What the author brought us was a wonderful world bridging on paranormal but kind of witchy light if you will.

If you read the novella, this book jumps forward 20 ish years. Brooks is a new detective in town and walks right into another disappearance. The book follows this story and introduces Brooks to Vivienne, the local psychic/witch. Together they work to discover the mystery of the lighthouse. Along the way, they have feelings for each other but those really take a back seat to the investigative work.

It will be interesting to see if the author can continue to bring such compelling story telling if this couple stays in Westerly Cove. It seems like they may need to talk their show on the road in order to keep things interesting.

I look forward to more by this author and more of this couple of investigators.

I voluntarily read and reviewed an advanced copy of this book. All thoughts and opinions are my own

𝐖𝐡𝐢𝐬𝐩𝐞𝐫𝐬 𝐟𝐫𝐨𝐦 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐋𝐢𝐠𝐡𝐭𝐡𝐨𝐮𝐬𝐞 is the first book in the Westerly Cove series by Heidi McLaughlin featuring a unique paranormal suspense tale with a cozy romance lightly woven through for Brooks and Vivienne. What an amazing premise… a new-to-town detective finds himself relying on a local woman with psychic abilities and spiritual sensitivities on his first complex case. I loved the parallel of the two missing persons cases, 25 years apart. The world building and imagery were top notch, as the author blended the paranormal aspects with the depth of the betrayal, corruption, and darkness of the criminal activity that has become imbedded in this small coastal town. The twists and turns were original and kept me on the edge of my seat. The unexplainable connection between Brooks and Vivienne was so compelling, leaving me longing for them to get together. I cannot wait for the series to continue! I need more of these two, both as work partners and beyond!!

I received an ARC for free, and am leaving this review voluntarily.

Whispers from the Lighthouse is book 1 in the Westerly Cove Series. I am a huge Heidi fan and have been for years. I loved her take on a paranormal suspense that expertly wove her brand of romance with small town charm. Brooks and Vivienne sucked me in from the very beginning and I devoured every single page of this story.

The town of Westerly Cove holds secrets that have been swept under the rug. People have been disappearing for generations and the citizens have stayed quiet out of fear for themselves. Vivienne is the owner of The Tea Shop and has a unique skill in that she experiences visions from the ghosts of the town. Much to the dismay of those responsible who would like to keep the secrets hidden forever.

Brooks is a new to town detective who finds himself relying on Vivienne for her psychic & spiritual abilities. Heidi did a phenomenal job blending paranormal with the betrayal, corruption and secrets of the town. The connection between Brooks and Vivienne had me begging for more. I can't wait for the next installment of this series and to see where it goes.

Whispers From the Lighthouse is the first book in the Westerly Cove Mystery series. If you have read any of Heidi McLaughlin’s prior novels and think this is another romance book, it is not. It is a mystery but with a psychic, Vivienne Hawthorne and new to town detective Brooks Harrington. Yes there may be some feelings between them that show up throughout the book but that’s it for romance.

This story hooked me right in and didn’t let go until the last word on the last page. What everyone in Westerly Cove thought was just another missing tourist is only a blip of the story. Ms. McLaughlin weaves together every layer of the story, from Vivienne and the spiritual women in her family going back generations, Brooks need for a change of scenery, to dead or missing townspeople going back decades, to a surprising discovery that almost divides the small Rhode Island coastal town.

This a must read book and I would give it 10 stars if I could. You will not be disappointed at all.

Whispers from the Lighthouse is such a fabulous read. I could not get enough of this. A new series and you do not want to miss out on it. Vivienne comes from a family that all have some sort of power and Vivienne's are getting active as mysterious things happen in Westerly Cove. Brooks is a detective looking for a change and hits the ground running when he comes to town. I love how Vivienne gives the police department a helping hand. She lets the spirits help guide her along with putting clues left behind together to solve old cases. Brooks is drawn to Vivienne and you will love the connection they form as they partner together to find the missing woman. I love how Brooks is so open to everything as Vivienne is guided by the spirits. This is going to be an addicting series. I cannot wait for more to come. I could not get enough of Brooks and Vivienne. You need to read this now.

Who is Vivienne? Where is she and why? What is her duty? Who are or were Emmeline and Josephine? I like Jack and his honesty with Vivienne. Who is Brooks, and what brings him into Vivienne's orbit? Where is he from and what is his profession? His visit to Vivienne's shop was quite interesting. Who is Melissa, and how or when does Vivienne meet her? Watching someone who works in the realms of logic and science learning about Vivienne's supernatural/mystical side was interesting. When the missing woman's case resembles Lily's case, what happens? Can either one case, or the other, or both be solved? What do we learn about both Lily and Melissa? Read and see what happens. I cannot wait until the next book!

What an intriguing 5 star story this was.

Vivienne has a specially gift, not one that is well accepted too in her home town. A tourist disappears and she saw it in a vision. Brooks needs a fresh start so he moves to this small town that’s supposed to be quiet. But it’s anything but quiet. The detective in him doesn’t want to believe Vivienne’s gift but he will put his faith in her.

This was an amazing and unexpected story. One that kept me hooked from the very first page to the last one. A small town full of secrets just waiting to be uncovered. It was highly suspenseful and entertaining. The plot twist kept me on the edge of my seat. Bottomline this is a must read.

Standalone for now told in the third person with an HEA. I strongly recommend this story.

Heidi stepped out of her comfort zone with this one and it didn’t disappoint.

I usually skip books that include supernatural themes but I like cozy mysteries. When I found out Heidi was releasing this story I knew I wanted to read it. I’m glad I did.

Whispers From the Lighthouse doesn’t have any graphic scenes like some suspense/mysteries. You can tell that Heidi put a lot of effort into planning this book. There are so many webs (over at least 25 years) that had to be weaved together and she didn’t leave a leaf unturned.

Whispers From the Lighthouse is mainly a mystery but there is a little bit of a romance thrown in there. This book is geared toward adults but I think teens that like mysteries would enjoy this story,

I hope Whispers From the Lighthouse continues as a series. We need more Vivienne and Brooks.

Vivienne and Brooks are just what I needed. These two come from opposite worlds. His is one of tangible things he can see and feel, what his job as a detective has taught him. Vivienne is a psychic medium who deals in the supernatural. The woman in her family hold the key to helping unlock the mysteries of Westerly Cove.

When a missing woman case falls on Detective Hastings desk, Vivienne starts having visions that may help solve the mysterious missing persons of Westerly Cove. A bit of mystery and slow burn bring these two together in the most unlikely way. I love the dynamics of these two and the way they work effortlessly together to solve crime both new and as far back as the imposing lighthouse on the cove. Mystery and drama bring this story to life.

Otay y'all not gonna lie this one started a little slow for me and I wasn't sure about it. Im so used to Heidi writing romance that this one threw me but it didn't disappoint in the end. Westerly Cove got something going on and Detective Brooks is determined to figure it out and with the help of Vivienne and the other spiritual people its a twisted road they weave. I was honestly shocked by how much was revealed and how deep it all went. The second half of the book definitely read quicker for me.

what an intense, exciting and full of mysterious moments in this story. The unexpected and mysterious disappearance of numerous people from this town. Then to add in sudden deaths of people who had no medical issues, so there are many things happening here that have people questioning what is happening. There is a new officer in town when another women suddenly goes missing, and there is a town median that feels spirits! This story is truly amazing and you will be waiting to see what they uncover next. Absolutely amazing story. loved it!

This book was so unique. I enjoyed the paranormal aspect so much. The town of Westerly Cove is wicked and filled with secrets. How do people disappear never to be heard from again? Vivienne would totally be my bestie. She has unique powers that throw this town into a tizzy. Brooks is a detective that has to reply on her powers to solve some of these secrets. Toss some corruption and betrayal in the mix and you have the perfect story. I couldn't put this book down, yes it's that good. Congratulations on this fantastic Book Heidi. My hands are itching for more.

This is definitely a little different from this author’s typical love stories… this one features murders and mystery!
Brooks is a new detective in town and takes his job very seriously. He’s not looking to coast by with his good looks… he wants to solve the cases which includes the mystery surrounding the lighthouse. Someone mentions to him he should go talk to Vivienne. Evidently she’s the town psychic or so she a witch?!?! Hmmmmm…
Overall, I enjoyed this story!*

Needed a good editor

The author repeats herself too much, often only a few pages apart.
Some of the conversations were off, the characters would be saying one thing but another would reply about something entirely different.
The relationship between the mains wasn't really believable. They are late thirty somethings but seem stunted in the ability to connect romantically with anyone.
So, this wasn't a solid start but it also didn't stop my interest in the next book.

I really enjoyed Whispers from the Lighthouse by Heidi McLaughlin. From the moment Vivienne Hawthorne, a tea shop owner who can supposedly talk to the dead, ends up paired with by-the-book Detective Brooks Harrington, I knew this wasn’t going to be your typical small-town mystery. The missing person case near Westerly Cove’s old lighthouse unfolds into a story filled with buried secrets, eerie twists, and just the right hint of slow-burn chemistry. It’s the kind of read that keeps you turning pages late into the night.

I’ve been a fan of Heidi McLaughlin for years, and this book reminded me why. Her mix of mystery, emotion, and heart never misses the mark, and Vivienne and Brooks quickly became one of my favorite pairings. Whispers from the Lighthouse is a great addition to your book collection. Happy Reading...enjoy!

This is not my usual genre but I will ready anything that Heidi McLaughlin writes. That being said, I had a little trouble getting into it, but once I did, I couldn't put it down. It kept me guessing and interested. The links between past and present were top notch, giving the two crimes a clear connection. I like how Brooks listened to Vivienne and didn't think she was nuts for her "powers". Looking forward to book 2
