I certainly do not need a twentysomething man with a devastating smile, tattooed forearms, and an easy charm that could unravel a woman twice as composed as me.
But when my daughter gets kicked out of after-school care (again) and my flaky nanny ghosts us (again), Austin Calloway moves into the duplex next door—and right into our lives.
Now he’s helping with homework, cooking dinner shirtless, and showing up with coffee like he’s always belonged here.
He’s too young.
Too familiar.
Too good with my daughter.
Too close.
And the worst part? He sees through me—the cracks, the stress, the walls I’ve built to protect what’s mine.
The more I try to keep him out, the more I ache to let him in.
But letting someone in means risking everything.
He’s the wrong choice . . . unless we’re finally ready to see what happens when we fall.
Lena Hendrix is a USA Today and Amazon Top 5 bestselling contemporary romance author living in the Midwest. Her love for romance started with sneaking racy Harlequin paperbacks as a teenager and now she writes her own hot-as-sin small town romance novels. Lena has a soft spot for strong alphas with marshmallow insides, heroines who clap back, and sizzling tension. Her novels pack in small town heart with a whole lotta heat.
When she's not writing or devouring new novels, you can find her hiking, camping, fishing, and sipping a spicy margarita!
A really sweet small town romance with a single mom and her sexy younger male neighbor, who becomes her part-time Manny and more than she could ever imagine. Austin & Selene and couldn't be more different but they are both aching to belong to someone. Even if they don't know it. It was beautiful to watch them find it together.
I thought Austin was so sweet with Winnie, Selene's daughter, and seeing him step up to help out and care for her was heart-warming. Selene is guarded and protective as she's been let down by a man before. And how could someone like Austin ever care about her for the long haul? He surely has a plan for his life that doesn't include a divorce and her child. But he proves his devotion, day by day.
Austin has his own hurt and abandonment issues. He's the son of an affair and he wasn't acknowledged by his father publicly, which left a deep scar. He's working on his relationship with his brother, but it's hard. Living next to Selene and Winnie is bringing extra joy into his life. Caring for them and supporting them is fulfilling for him. He finds purpose in it.
It was a great romance and I loved listening to these two lost souls find a home. The book was narrated by Ryan West and Ava Lucas in a duet format. I think Ryan West maybe sounded a bit older than Austen was supposed to be? But it didn't through me out of the book or anything. He is still very talented.
4 Stars 2.5 on the spice scale
*Thank you to the author for an ALC of this title.*
Ong the way that I love these two has absolutely no bounds. My heart… it now lives permanently between the pages of this book.
I was a puddle, a crying, emotional puddle because I wanted these two to give into their HEA more than I wanted air!
LENA ARE YOU KIDDING ME WIRH THIS ONE! It’s finished me. I did not finish it. It finished me.
✨ Small Town ✨ Single Mom ✨ Black Cat x Golden Retriever ✨ Neighbors to Lovers ✨ He’s the Nanny ✨ Age Gap
Selene and Austin were amazing. I don’t know what to expect with a “he’s the nanny” trope but I was not expecting the sheer emotion and sense of belonging I felt when reading this.
Ans can we talk about men who YEARN, because Austin was all in from the beginning and not only for Selene but for Winnie (her daughter too)
And Selene, I just wanted to wrap her in a hug and tell her to just let herself have this… and by THIS I mean the hot younger Manny.
I loved every second of this book. How Austin was all in, how he wasn’t going let their connection go, how he showed up time and time again. And I loved how Selene fought her demons, opened herself up and reclaimed parts of herself that the world dinged.
As always I loved the story with the Lady and this thread that keeps twining itself throughout all the books.
You sold me at single mom with a male nanny. When We Fall is EVERYTHING and I never wanted it to end. The way he quietly and solidly shows up for them and loves her adorably chaotic daughter is the sweetest thing. I loved the notes, how he’s insistent in figuring out her coffee order, and of course that he falls first. Chasing the Sun was so good but this…this is my favorite so far.
Read this when you’re in the mood for… - reverse age gap - single mom x manny - forced proximity - one night stand turned neighbors - banter and flirting - he falls first - “f it” - small town romance
I am struggling with words to express just how much I loved this book. Infinity stars, zero notes, just one RAVE review from me. This book made me feel so seen as a woman and as a mother. Even though I can't relate to being a single mom, I could so relate to all of Selene's feelings and internal thoughts. They were beautifully written. I truly think this is Lena Hendrix best writing to date. It was the most perfect balance of yearning, humor, emotion, and love.
My biggest takeaway from this book is to stop and appreciate the extraordinary ordinary in life. It seriously brought me to tears and made me think about my life differently.
I loved Austin and Selene together so much. She gave him purpose and he held her up in the most beautiful way. Austin was the perfect example of "if he wants to he will". He shows up day after day with a smile on his face and he stole my heart immediately. I especially loved his relationship with Winnie as her nanny. They were just the cutest duo. I mean- a man that is down so bad for a little girl that he proudly wears her sparkly purple nail polish? Say less.
This is definitely one of my favorite books this year! Do yourself a favor and RUN!

🎧 𝗡𝗼𝘄 𝗹𝗲𝘁𝘀 𝘁𝗮𝗹𝗸 𝗮𝘂𝗱𝗶𝗼... Ava Lucas and Ryan Hudson narrated this audiobook in Duet and it was SUCH a treat. They were both perfectly cast for the characters and brought the emotion, pining, and laughter to life. This is definitely going on my list of all time favorite audiobooks.

Oh my goodness this little small town has completely stolen my heart right along with the characters in this book. I absolutely adored Selene and Winnie. This mother daughter duo is truly something special. Winnie is the sweetest most creative and imaginative little girl and honestly anyone would be blessed to have her in their life. Even though Selene is overworked and stretched thin her love and dedication to her daughter never wavers. She shows up for Winnie every single time and that bond was beautiful to read.
And then there’s Austin the hot younger guy who has spent most of his life being overlooked and pushed aside. Watching him slowly find his place with Selene and Winnie and finally feel like he belongs somewhere completely melted my heart. Seeing him discover what home really means was everything.
The way Selene and Austin worked through their past insecurities together was so raw and so tender. Their emotional growth felt genuine earned and incredibly satisfying. I love this couple so much hands down my favorite of the series so far.
I am beyond excited for the next book. Now that I know who it’s about the wait feels absolutely unbearable. I need it immediately
When We Fall by Lena Hendrix completely swept me away— the audio (duet narrated by Ava Lucas & Ryan Hunter) was beyond lovely, with Ava capturing Selene’s overwhelmed but soft hearted energy so beautifully and Ryan giving Austin that steady, quietly devoted presence that makes this dynamic shine. Their chemistry is undeniable, but it’s the emotional warmth that got me: Austin stepping in with such effortless care, Selene learning to lean on someone again, and Winnie (the true scene stealer) bringing so much heart and sweetness. It’s tender, small town, spicy, and full of comfort, a standout in the Star Harbor world that still works perfectly on its own.

Reserve Age Gap [36/28] One Night Stand Single Mom x Nanny Neighbors to Lovers He Falls First
Selene is a single mom to 5-year-old Winnie struggling to play both roles. One night, no names was all she needed; Selene is shocked to look up and discover he is her new neighbor and even more so when he ends up being her last resort when she needs childcare.
Austin and Selene were perfect together. Add in Winnie and you have the most adorable family. This book made me smile. Two broken people, both with emotional baggage finding love and happiness in the most unexpected place. I loved the reserve age gap; their playfulness and maturity felt so real and authentic.
Austin Calloway was lovable from start to finish. He was such a genuine and caring man. I absolutely adored his bond with Winnie. Despite a rough upbringing, Austin still loves hard. The way he completed this family melted my heart.
Ava Lucas and Ryan Hudson did a fantastic job with the narration. Their voices were smooth; they were perfect for Austin and Selene.
Thank you Lena for allowing me to read an ARC of When We Fall
*I was provided an ARC of this book by the the author and their promotion team
The reverse age-gap trope is not always my cup of tea, but Austin Calloway may have just changed my mind!
Single mom Selene Darling is just trying to figure it out. After her divorce, she's thrown herself into being the best parent possible to her 5 yr old daughter, Winnie, and into her job as an artifact keeper for her small town's historical society. When Winnie gets kicked out of yet another after-school program for being too "spirited", Selene knows things are only going to become more hectic. In comes Austin Calloway, the new neighbor who is 8 years her junior, whom she shares a history that no one but the two of them know about. Despite the obvious attraction and chemistry between them, Selene is already being pulled a million different directions, and has no time for another distraction. However, her fit and tattooed neighbor is now showing up with coffee, entertaining her daughter, and even volunteering to help with school drop off and pick up. The more time spent together, it's clear to see Austin is exactly where he wants to be. Selene knows it would be so easy to fall for him, and her daughter already has, but she's been burned before. Selene worked hard to build herself back up from one heartbreak, but with Austin, she doesn't known if she'll survive another...
Austin Calloway stole by heart in this story! He is truly a man who's love language is acts of service and I could not help but SWOON with every little thing he did to make both Selene and Winnie's days easier! Selene was such as badass and independent FMC who I admired, but seeing her let down her walls and allow Austin in was so beautiful. Winnie added such as fun and whimsical component to this story, and I love her obsession with all things Fae and the Lady of the Dunes lore! Overall, this was a great addition to the series and I cannot wait to see what @authorlenahendrix has in store for Star Harbor and the rest of the Darling fam!
I enjoy a good age gap, and with the FMC being older and the MMC is the new nanny- it was a fun twist. Especially with they way these two first met.
Selene had understandable fears, worries and many things on her plate. She was a quiet character, but passionate and loved her daughter so much. Austin was so wonderful. Kind, a huge heart and swoony in all the right ways. He stepped up for them, simply because he wanted to and was happy to be there.
Austin and Selene were attracted to one another, but cautious with their hearts-especially Selene. I enjoyed how patient Austin was-never hesitating to show Selene her worth, and that she deserved the best. Seeing her open up and lean on someone as a partner was nice. They had good tension and I wanted to see them give into the desire they shared-pushing worries to the side. I would have liked more scenes of these two together so we could watch as they built their bond even stronger.
Watching Austin with Selene’s daughter, Winnie, was the best-he enjoyed spending time with her and showed her love and generosity. She was a firecracker who kept her mom on her toes-but loved big and had a big imagination.
They created this new little family, completing their lives in ways they always wanted, but didn’t think they could have.
We got a little more insight into the ongoing background story this series will follow, so it should be interesting to see what will happen next. This has all the lovably, nosy, quirky but caring small town vibes. I enjoyed seeing the side characters and glimpses of potential couples to come.

e-ARC review ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐✨!!!! thank you my Lena for this ARC.
One thing we always have to understand is that Lena does not write ugly men, or useless men, or men who don’t work. She crafts male leads like a master artisan. And Austin is no exception.
I really loved this book. It has a touch of angst—that weird little feeling that something big is about to happen… and then nothing actually does. It’s like a flash of lightning that lights up the sky but never hits the ground. And still, you feel every tremor.
Selene, our heroine, is thirty-six, living a fast-paced life with a demanding job and a five-year-old daughter, Winnie, who runs on eternal battery power. Selene is constantly juggling chaos, exhaustion, and responsibility. And right when everything feels overwhelming, her new neighbor appears: Austin, twenty-eight, tattooed, and the kind of man who challenges your hormones without even trying. Even more so because they’ve met before… and that always leaves sparks behind.
And then it happens—the beginning between them unfolds in the most natural, gentle way, like the universe whispered, “finally.” That’s something I adore about Lena’s books: everything flows. Nothing forced, nothing awkward. Just story falling exactly where it belongs.
The plot itself isn’t complicated, though there are those moments where you’re reading like: “Please, just do it already. Say it. Kiss. Now. Please.!!!!" That delicious kind of slow burn that makes you hold your breath without even realizing it. And the spice? Perfect. Balanced. Just right.
There’s a small conflict—nothing dramatic, more about fear and lack of communication than anything else—but it’s handled well. Because in the end, it’s never just about the mistake; it’s about the impact. What you choose to do after. And this book shows that beautifully.
So yeah, thanks for watching this review. If you’re looking for something soft, sweet, full of “I shouldn’t but I want to” chemistry, with characters who feel real and an author who lets the story breathe, this is it: Selene, Winnie, and Austin, in a romance that flows exactly the way it was meant to.
I always love Lena’s books, and Chasing the Sun was soooo good. But I think I loved this even more!
From a one night stand, to new neighbors, to Austin being the nanny—this was such a fun ride!
I’m usually not big on reverse age gaps, but I really really enjoyed this one. Austin and Selene fit together so well! Austin was so steadfast and helpful 😭 and the way he Winnie was absolutely adorable.
Austin and Selene took it slow and really built their friendship and trust, and I’m obsessed with them. I can’t wait to see more from the rest of the town!
TROPES Reverse Age Gap Single Mom/Male Nanny One Night Stand He Falls First Black Cat/Golden Retriever Small Town
Thank you so much to Lena Hendrix for sending me a copy for an honest review. 💖
Im a sucker for a single parent x nanny so when i saw queen Lena was doing a SINGLE MOM X MANNY I RANNNNN to get my hands on it asap! Star Harbor is quintessential Lena Hendrix, quirky small town and I love the ghostly backstory that we're getting a little more of each book! Austin, Selene and Winnie fit together like perfect puzzle pieces. I adored seeing Austin interact with Winnie. They were by far my favorite part. Winnie is so so adorable and witty and I love that she played a big role in this book.
I do dare to say that I think I am a Wes girlie and I know if he gets a book it is going to crush me, but I'm very excited to see where the series takes us!
Now for some brutal honesty: While I did enjoy reading this book a lot, it was not my favorite Lena Hendrix. I found some of the descriptions and imagery very repetitive and eventually got annoying. I think some iteration of "golden sunlight" was mentioned close to 30 times.
The narration: unfortunately I am not a huge fan of Ryan Hudson as a narrator. I think he does a better job in duet narration but some of his more expressive lines still felt a little monotone to me and it took me out of the story a bit. Ava Lucas however, was FANTASTIC. I adored her narration and she did a great job voicing a child!
Overall, though I did enjoy the story and I am very excited to see where the rest of star harbor takes us because i know Queen Lena has some amazing things in store 🙌🏼
Thank you so much to the author and her team for the ALC
if Lena writes it, I'm guaranteed to love it at this point. I loved being back in Star Harbor with the Darlings, getting glimpses of future couples, and I am hooked on the ongoing background story surrounding the lady of the dunes. I cannot wait to see how that plays out. this was a 'reverse' single parent/nanny trope and I absolutely loved seeing Austin's relationship progress with little Winnie and all her Fae lore 😂
LOVED. He might be one of my favorite heroes from Lena. The way he was searching for a place in the world and found it with her and her daughter. He was steadfast and devout, he didn't want just her, he wanted that life, the quiet space to belong. Gah, my whole heart was in this one!
It was better than Book 1, but that's not saying much. I'm not sure what's inspired the change, but this is not the writing I'm used to from this author. It's overly descriptive and repetitive, the book was too long, the characters were immature and didn't see obvious solutions soon enough, but then things were wrapped up very abruptly at the end because we'd already spent too much time on them until that point.
I wish I were more excited about the next book because Wes being the formerly happy, well-liked man around town business owner turned recluse after a devastating injury getting matched up with Clara, the absent Darling sister who's clearly been going through some stuff and needs a place to regroup so she ends up roommates and in forced proximity with the grump that is now Wes? That sounds like a fantastic time, but I honestly don't know that I'll continue with the series. I can't say I'd recommend her last two books now, but definitely check out Lena's backlist because I've really enjoyed her other books before this series.
Audiobook Review: Ava Lucas & Ryan Hunter were commendable in this duet narration. Both narrators managed to capture the essence of the MCs and portray all their complex emotions and feelings just right. I especially loved Ava's narration for Winnie's character with the perfect balance of innocence and mischief. 10/10 would recommend the audiobook for sure.
Selene Darling had so much going on that she just could not afford to hit pause for even a minute. I could feel her exhaustion and how hard she was trying to be her very best for Winnie but somehow forgetting that she was also human and deserved more than just to exist in the process. Meeting Austin and spending time with him planted that small seed of hope in her, and she allowed herself to slowly rely on someone to share her responsibilities. I could also understand her conflicting feelings regarding letting Austin into not just her but also Winnie's life, especially given her past. It was a struggle, and Selene had a lot to contemplate, but I loved her journey of slowly opening up to Austin and, by extension, the possibility of something new.
Austin's character was just so dang perfect, and I want to cry that he isn't real. This man deserved the whole damn world, and I'm so happy that he found the people who loved him the way he deserved. There was so much more to Austin's character than his easy-going and charming personality. Learning about his past, insecurities, and fears made my heart ache for this man. I also LOVED how sweet, tender, caring, and present he was for both Selene and Winnie without either of them having to even ask. What started as him helping out Selene as a neighbor turned into so much more as he started forming a bond with both Selene and her daughter Winnie.
Winnie was so freaking precious, and I just couldn't get enough of her. She was the sweetest, cutest, funniest 5-year-old, and I loved her relationship with Selene. Watching the bond between Austin and Winnie take root and grow throughout the book was so damn heartwarming, and it meant a great deal to both of them. Winnie was just so innocent and sometimes said the most touching things in the most casual way, like only kids do.
The romance between Selene and Austin took time to progress, but the tension was there right from the start. The way these two fit together was just perfect. Although this was a reverse age gap and there was significant concern about this on Selene's end, Austin was truly who Selene needed in her life and in Winnie's life too. His steady, calming presence was exactly what Selene needed to ground her racing thoughts and make her feel seen. Selene's faith and trust in Austin were new to him and made him feel like he mattered, like he was more than just a temporary fixture in their lives.
Both Selene and Austin's characters were complex in their own ways, and I loved how we could see their layers being peeled back as the story progressed. They looked out for each other and gave each other the safety to be themselves. I also loved the way Austin kept teasing and flirting with Selene and how she tried so hard not to show how affected she was by it. And the way the three of them sort of fall into this routine so effortlessly just made everything—as Winnie would call it—magical.
Holy fuck!! The spice was incredible, especially with this being a duet narration. I have to say the narrators really nailed the spicy scenes, which just made it SO much more enjoyable for me. I've said this time and again that I always look forward to the smut in Lena's books, and she's done it again. The tension between these two was uh-mazing. Austin and his dirty talking literally had my jaw on the floor, and Selene resisted wayyy longer than I'd have.
The side characters continue to grow on me along with the town of Star Harbor. I loved Selene's relationship with her sisters and how they teased and supported her. I also loved watching Austin connect with Brody, knowing how much that meant to him.
I love how Lena threads these mysteries into her books that span over the course of the series, where things unravel one bit at a time. The mysterious Lady of the Dunes is another such mystery, and the revelations made in this book and how it could relate to another character have me even more invested than before.
Thank you to Lena Hendrix for the ALC in exchange for an honest review.
[5 Stars🤩] Lena, Lena, Lena....what an incredibly special book you've written. Sometimes, when it comes to books, you know when you have something beautiful in your hands and you don't want it to end, and When We Fall was one of those books for me. The storytelling was delicate, the character development was nuanced, the romance was impeccable, and the tension, angst, and pining was my undoing.
When We Fall is the kind of book that quietly devastates you and heals you in the same moment. It resonates and doesn't let go, and I don't think I'll move on from this book anytime soon. It will go down not only as a top read in 2025, but as a top read in recent memory. Not only was this book relatable, there were so many beautifully heartbreaking moments that helped me remember that I have the chance to live in the "extraordinary ordinary." And as someone who feels like they have to keep it all together sometimes, especially as a mom, it's easy to lose sight of the ache of ordinary love.
Austin was the shining definition of "if he wanted to, he would." He was masculine yet tender, sweet and generous, kind, funny, and so wonderfully thoughtful. He was a perfect counterpoint for Selene, and I loved his relationship with Winnie. I was emotional a lot throughout When We Fall over Austin always showing up for Selene and Winnie, and how he created a silent support system for them with no desire for recognition. He simply cared for them even when they didn't recognize it in that moment.
Selene was a deeply relatable character, and there were so many moments during her chapters that felt validating not only as a woman, but as a mom--especially when her internal monologue talked about the kind of mom she wanted to be for Winnie. The way she felt like she had to be and do everything, and how it was difficult to let someone step in to help. Her character growth and journey of self-realization was devastatingly beautiful, and it's one I won't soon forget.
The tension, the angst, and the yearning--THE YEARNINGGGGGGG--between Selene and Austin was beautifully portrayed and written, and the intimacy was off the charts, and the "will they/won't they" made my chest ache in the BEST way. There were no gratuitous spicy scenes in When We Fall, which made the scenes even more special. It truly felt like it was advancing the plot without trying too hard.
To be honest, I'm sad that I'll never get to read this book for the first time ever again--it's THAT good! Lena was at her best when she wrote this, and I hope we get another special dynamic between Wes and Clara when we get to come back to Star Harbor!
+Thank you to Lena Hendrix for the ARC of When We Fall! All thoughts in this review are my own.
This was so good! Literally, I loved everything about this! Lena Hendrix did it again and wrote another book that had me kicking, screaming, crying, swooning and laughing! This was my first “manny” novel and I really loved the change of pace.
Ava Lucas and Ryan Hudson absolutely killed this on audio! The duet narration was knocked out of the park! This will certainly become one of my go to comfort audiobooks 🥹.
Austin and Selena’s story picked up perfectly after book one!.. and it was perfect! Lena continues to write an extremely heartfelt series and she has me in an absolute chokehold.
Selene is such a beautiful and strong character. Her emotions were raw and real. I absolutely loved her relationship with Winnie 🥹. Selene was so used to taking care of everything by herself and I absolutely loved watching her accept Austin’s help. She literally deserved all the best and her storyline was perfect!
I thought Austin was such a unique character. His backstory was heartbreaking but I loved watching him grow and work through the trauma of his past. His emotions literally were contagious… IYKYK but man he had me crying like a baby. But my favorite part about Austin was his relationship with Winnie! Their relationship was literally perfect. Ps. Austin is hot.
Austin and Selena’s relationship was heartfelt and tender. Their banter was top tier. The way that they supported each other throughout everything was so well written. But my favorite part about Austin and Selene’s story was the family they created with Winnie. The three of them together were literally everything!!
Would I suggest this? Yes! Would I reread? Yes! Would I like a trophy? Yes!
Thank you, Lena Hendrix, for writing another novel that has completely stolen my heart ♥️.
I am loving my this series so far, and I was so so excited for another Single mum by Lena and let me tell you she absolutely nailed it!! I loved that she mixed it up and gave us a reverse age gap, and Austin very much lived up to the expectations!
I loved how he made Selene believe in herself again, how he made her feel wanted and desired and so many things you don’t feel about yourself once you become a mum! He was actual perfection and I basically highlighted everything he said about Selene because wow swoon! My heart hurt for him when he was trying to grasp the relationship with his dad and how that impacted his relationship with Brody, and then when he felt as thought he’d let Winnie and Selene down! I was broken!
Selene was such a relatable FMC as a mum, I absolutely loved how real she was and how she felt the mum guilt hard! You could see how hard it was for her to accept help, and to take that chance on Austin and then how she felt like she couldn’t get it right, but it was definitely worth it in the end!
I don’t know how she does it but Lena made this one even hotter than the last and I loved every second! I’m also completely obsessed with knowing more about the lady in white and what it all means! I NEED ANSWERS LENA!!!
Austin, Selene, & Winnie's love story was absolute perfection.
Selene is a single mom to her 5 year old Winnie. While navigating that and work, she could really use some help. Little does she know her new younger neighbor Austin (who she may or may not have hooked up with one night at the bar) was going to step in and help out. The more time Austin spends over at Selene's, the harder it is for Selene to deny her feelings for Austin.
I absolutely ADORED the dynamic between Winnie, Selene, & Austin. Austin was SOOO attentive when it came to his girls, and he truly would move the world for them. Selene truly tried to keep her walls up around Austin, but that boy came in with a sledgehammer and knocked them down one at a time. The little moments that were given to use with Austin & Winnie had my heart absolutely melting. Winnie reminds me so much of my daughter and it was melting my heart.
I loved seeing more research on the Lady of the Dunes happening and all the pieces coming together or still missing throughout the history of Star Harbor. I am very excited to see what is to come in the next book based off the little hints that were being dropped throughout the book!
FMC: Selene Darling, Winnie (5) MMC: Austin Calloway Spice: 🌶️🌶️🌶️ Pages: 384 Tropes: Small Town Romance, Single Mom, Male Nanny, Reverse Age Gap, He Falls First, Neighbors to Lovers, Forced Proximity Setting: Star Harbor, Michigan
Thoughts: I really liked this book. It was pretty lighthearted and fun with a little emotion and maybe too much of seeing myself in both main characters. I really felt for Austin instantly. The way he believed he could never be anybody’s first choice really got to me. I liked Selene and her views of feeling like she’d missed her chance at a true romance hit a little close to home. I loved how Austin persued her and never gave up on her. He showed her that despite being a younger man, he was mature and could give her the partner she wanted for her life. I loved Austin’s relationship with Winnie. He let her be a kid and became her partner in crime. I love that he fostered her imagination and never tried to disuade her from her stories or ideas. I also felt like this book gave more insight into the underlying series plot with the Lady of the Dunes. Overall it was a good book, but I felt like it was more of a scene setter for the next few books than I would have liked.
Dedication: To the older, single women out there who are still hoping to find someone obsessed with you…have you considered a younger man?

Favourite Quotes “No, this was something else. She looked like sunlight caught in skin. Solid. Soft. Alive.”
“He was in her art. Her morning routines. Her vocabulary. He was in my walls.”
“It wasn’t just that he stayed. It was the way he stayed. Unrushed. Unbothered.”
“I didn’t know what to call it yet, but it felt like the start of something that mattered.”
Review The second trip to Star Harbor was a little more rocky than the first! This story made me fall in love with Austin and how patient and caring he is. His love for Selene was out of this world and his relationship with Winnie was adorable. Unfortunately I was unable to fully invest into Austin and Selene’s relationship and felt like there was something missing.
I did however love seeing all the secondary characters again and need Wes, Hayes, and Brodie’s stories ASAP.
When We Fall by Lena Hendrix is a heartfelt and steamy small-town romance that beautifully captures the tension of forbidden love and second chances. The story follows two characters whose past history and current circumstances create an irresistible push-pull dynamic filled with emotional depth and sizzling chemistry. Hendrix’s writing is evocative and engaging, making their journey both tender and passionate.
I appreciated the authentic small-town setting and the way family dynamics and community ties add layers to the romance. The slow-burn tension builds perfectly, leading to swoon-worthy moments that feel earned and meaningful. The characters are well-developed with relatable struggles, making their growth and connection deeply satisfying.
While some tropes are familiar in the small-town romance genre, Hendrix’s emotional honesty and strong character voices make When We Fall stand out. The pacing keeps you invested, balancing angst, steam, and heartfelt resolution. Overall, I’m giving it four stars. It’s a compelling and romantic read perfect for fans of emotional, character-driven love stories.

Chemistry. Chemistry. Chemistry. These two had one of the best chemistries on page ever to be written.
Also, this was one of those books that felt like a warm hug when you get home. That first sip of coffee on a cold morning. Sitting on your sofa after a long day.
Selene and Austin had one night. She thought it had been a nameless one. He already had asked about her. He was younger, she was a single mom one school drop off away from losing her mind. He wants to help her, she doesn’t want a distraction.
Well, let’s say we are the true winners here because we get to enjoy seeing this epic love story unfold.
As a mom, this had some of the most relatable, realistic kid-moments ever. I felt that “but those socks are itchy” deep in my soul. As a romance reader, this had some of the best slow burn and romantic tension ever. All tight up in a small town charm bow that hit just right.
Book 2 in the Star Harbor series is here and it’s the PERFECT follow up to Chasing the Sun. I’m a small town romance lover and no one does it quite like Lena Hendrix 😉.
Selene Darling is a single mom who is overwhelmed with work and childcare after her nanny ghosts her and her adorable daughter Winnie gets kicked out of her after school program. Enter Austin Calloway. He moves in next door and starts to help her out. He takes over nanny duties and fits in so perfectly. And of course, the chemistry between Selene and Austin is unmatched. Austin was so attentive and the perfect MMC. He just might be one of my new favorite guys.
I am also obsessed with the secondary ghost storyline and you get to learn some more about the lady of the dunes. I love a little mystery with my romance. 🥰
what to expect: ✨reverse age gap ✨single mom ✨he’s the nanny ✨forced proximity ✨quirky small town ✨spice 🌶️
As always, many thanks to Lena and team for the ALC. This was duet narrated by Ava Lucas & Ryan Hunter who did an amazing job bringing these characters to life.
