Rebekah A. Morris has lived her entire life (as of now) in Missouri. Being home educated during her school years was great, except for writing. That was the worst subject (along with math) that she had to do. It wasn't until after she graduated that she discovered the joys and wonder of writing. Now she can't write enough. After spending six years in research and writing, she completed her first book, "Home Fires of the Great War," a 500+ page, historical fiction about home life in the United States and Canada during the First World War. Since then, she has been an avid writer and always has more than one story going on at once because only one story at a time got tiring and dull.

This was a great book! I absolutely love Jenelle & her keep-the-peace outlook about her eleven year old sister-in-law. While this was written more for pre-teens, the writing didn’t seem juvenile. The only flaw was the head-swapping (Point of view changing with no breaks to differ who’s P.O.V. it’s in. ;) ) distracted a bit from the story. I do wish there was a bit more details, like how old Norman & Jenelle are or the age difference between the siblings or even what year this book was set in. “Unbroken” was very clean with lots of Spiritual Content. I really enjoyed it and can see girls of all ages liking this story! Older teens, like myself, may fawn a bit over how cute & sweet Norman & Jenelle are to each other. I’d love to know how long they’ve been married, since they acted like sweet newlyweds. :)
I look forward to reading the rest of the series and, hopefully, seeing Orlena growing! :)

Okay, so first of all, I really enjoyed this book. I think what I loved about it the most is that there was no romance plot. Yeah, Norman and Jenelle are married and kiss here and there, but it was done in a very lovely and appropriate way. It didn't take over the story like some romances could in books. Also, it didn't make me feel uncomfortable at all. The relationship between Norman and Jenelle felt very natural as a married couple.

The main plot was between Norman and Orlena. Oh, Orlena. She was a very interesting character. Honestly, Norman made me laugh out loud a couple of times when talking about his sister or discipling her, especially the shoe part.

Also, the spiritual parts in this story blew me away. They were life lessons. Honestly, I almost cried at the end of the book. It was a very touching ending.

Lastly, I will mention briefly, that I'm not a fan of omniscient POV. It's really hard for me to connect too. But I was really surprised how I connect with each character, even though it was written in omniscient POV. I feel like the story works well being told in an omniscient POV. Plus, the author has a special writing style for writing omniscient POV. It felt like I was sitting across from her having a cup of tea while she told me a story. Loved it!

I would go far and say this reminded me of a Janette Oke book, especially "Heart of the Wilderness" that I read earlier this year. If you like Janette Oke books, then I would recommend checking this one out.

Looking forward to continuing this series! Glad I have the next book to read it next!

5 stars & 5/10 hearts. I love this book. It is so sweet. Norman is wonderful, and I relate to his struggle with keeping his temper with Orlena. Jenelle is a darling, and Mrs. O’Connor is delightful. ;) As are all the ranch hands! The language is accurate to the setting and time period, which is wonderful! And the whole theme of praying through problems is wonderful. The end made me tear up. <33 I can’t wait to read the other books in the series!

A Favourite Quote: “‘Thou hast planted my feet on the Rock and established my goings.... If your feet are planted on the Rock of Jesus Christ[,] your goings, your ways, yes, and even the trials which seem so hard to bear, have been placed before you by a loving Saviour that your faith might be established more firmly. So, if you feel overwhelmed by life, go to your Rock, that Rock in a weary land which cannot change, go to Him for strength and He will establish you.’”
A Favourite Beautiful Quote: “Lurking not far from the surface in the mind of each, the perplexing problems of Orlena ran and tumbled endlessly like a turbulent little stream seeking a peaceful lake into which to settle and be at rest.”
A Favourite Humorous Quote: “‘Norman! You must fire that man!’”
“Pausing with his glass half way to his lips he asked, ‘What man?’ ...
“‘Lloyd Something-or-other. He dared to try ordering me about and refused to do as I directed!’
“‘“I already did.’ ...
“‘Norman,’ Jenelle gasped, ‘you didn’t really, did you? He is one of the best hands we have!’
“‘Oh, I fired him all right,’ Norman told her. Then, with a grin he added, ‘But I hired him back not ten seconds later.’”

This book was very well written from a logistical standpoint (e.g. grammar, writing, formatting), but the story felt a bit lacking to me. I LOVED Morris's writing style! So old-fashioned and Elsie Dinsmore-ish. That part I loved! Story-wise, I only liked it, and it felt like there was a few story lines that weren't resolved. And I understand that it is a series, but I still would have liked to see those resolved.

Worth the read, but not necessarily something I would read over and over.

My last update of this book was page 122 and I thought, "Why am I doing an update? I should just finish it!" So I did!

The Characters:
Mr. and Mrs. Mavrich - loved them!!! Their personalities were so different from each other, but they still made a great couple! Norman's quick temper and Jenelle's quick, soft attitude!
Orlena - most of the book I wanted to hide from her wrath, but I made it through and I'm glad I did! She was a spoiled, rotten girl, but she just needs the Lord!
Mrs. O'Connor - loved her too!! And her Irish accent!! :)
Lloyd - AHH! Whenever I was reading the book, I kept going because I wanted more of him!! I hope there is in the next book!! ;)
The other ranch-hands - they were all great! All with different personalities! Can't help but like them!

The Story-line:
Western stories are great!! Being a horsey girl myself, I really enjoyed it! My family has chickens, so I understood Orlena's "struggle" to care for them. ;)

Content:
Nothing bad at all! The main married couple kissed several times, but no detail.

All-in-all:
Loved it!! I'm so glad I read it! Thank you so much, Rebekah, for sending me a PDF when it was free on Amazon (and because I don't have an Amazon account)!! :) Now I really want to read the second book!!!

Side note:
Those drawings among the chapters were amazing! I loved them and it really brought out the story more!! :) Who knew a drawing of Lloyd could make him look better than you imagined?!

This book was the most refreshing thing I've read in months. This book had a very fresh view on what could be considered a cliche plot.
Urlena is a very believable character. She's been raised getting whatever she wants, and when she suddenly doesn't get her every whim catered to, she reacts how you would expect her to and probably how most of us would. Norman and Janelle were a very sweet couple, and I really enjoyed seeing them together.
And I'm just taking a moment to revel in the fact that this is not a romance book. I cannot wait for the next book!

I really enjoyed reading this book! The author writes very well. ;)
Orlena... oh my... sometimes, I just couldn't believe she could even act that way!!! It's so disrespectful, yet written in such a real way!
I liked Mrs. O'Connor and reading about all the ranch hands was fun! :)
Another of my favorite parts was how strong Norman, Jenelle, and their ranch hand's trust in God was.

4.5 stars. :)

I read this in almost a day which means the story was captivating enough to make me keep turning the pages.

Okay, Orlena is such a brat and that sometimes got a exhausting to say the least, but this is only book one. I am really intrigued now to see how her character changes and grows with the other books.

I love Norman and Jenelle. They are such a sweet couple and I love how protective Norman is of his wife. You can also see their genuine faith in God throughout the story, yet it doesn't come across as preachy.

I loved that this story kept me interested, but nothing was so intense that it would make me stressed. I found it enjoyable as an adult, but I know that pre-teens, young teens, or really any age can enjoy this story. Over all this was just a refreshing and enjoyable read. And I really want to read the other books in this series.

While not my favourite of this author’s works, I really enjoyed Unbroken. The old-fashioned feel of the book was lovely, and I’m very much looking forward to the rest of the series.
I think the thing I loved most about it was the characters. Jenelle – Jenelle was just so sweet and perfect and amazing. And Norman – he was amazing too. And Lloyd! and Hardrich! and ALL the ranch hands – I don’t even know which one I loved best. Orlena was really awful, but I just loved the way Jenelle and Norman act towards her and care about her even though she is so horrid. The POV switching I found really well done, and I felt like it always switched perspective at exactly the right moments. I enjoyed everyone’s POV, even Orlena’s.
By far my favourite scene was... Lloyd and the fences. I'm not going to say more, because of spoilers, but that scene, and all the scene related to it, was absolutely amazing. And I love Lloyd so much!!!
(And before I carry on, can I just mention the illustrations!?!? There weren’t many, but they were so so beautiful!! The detail in them! The people looked real – almost like photographs – and that one picture of the horses…!!!) Anyway, back to the book itself ;)
So, why did I not fall as much in love with this book as I have with all the others by this author? I don’t really even know. I loved the characters - REALLY loved the characters - I loved the setting (I want to live on that farm so much!); I loved the storyline; but… something just seemed lacking. Especially at first; I found it a little hard to get into. And while I loved the whole climax scene and everything leading up to it, and found the book very hard to put down while reading it, I thought the ending itself seemed just a little bit… sudden.
But, apart from that, this was a very enjoyable read. I think it might be best for ages 12 or 13 or so; although it isn’t a children’s book, I feel it would be enjoyed most at that age.
All that being said, Unbroken is definitely a book I would reread, and one I would without any hesitation recommend; and Triple Creek is a series I'm really looking forward to continuing.

**Originally posted on Reveries Reviews**

I wrote the review as a freewrite today, so it's not very organized, but here goes. :)

A couple months back I read the book Unbroken (Triple Creek Ranch, #1) by Rebekah A. Morris. Unbroken is the story of a rich city girl who, after the death of her grandmother, comes to live on a ranch with her brother and his wife.

This girl, Orlena Mavrich, is very spoiled and knows absolutely nothing about farm life. Although humorous at times, this is definitely a problem. Her brother, Norman, and his wife, Jenelle, are determined to show Orlena God’s love … and hopefully cure her of her tantrums!

Unbroken is a fantastic book. Besides being an exciting, sometimes humorous story full of little adventures, it also has some wonderful messages. Jenelle, in particular, is a wonderful example of Christian perseverance, gracefulness, gentleness, and sweetness.

Norman and Jenelle were really sweet together, and seeing Orlena change over time was really cool.

I do have a few negatives about this book, however. It’s squeaky clean Christian fiction … so perhaps the author didn’t want to go into it … but I thought perhaps Jenelle was pregnant. It certainly seemed like it. Always tired, dizzy spells … all the classic signs. Maybe I just have too active an imagination (or like babies a lot), but … yeah. That’s what I thought was happening! And yet … the weeks pass … and no mentions of an incoming baby! So maybe Jenelle just was tired from managing Orlena. But … but … but … I want there to be a baby! :P

Then there was some head-hopping. If you’re writing from a more omniscient POV, this is okay, but I don’t think the author really was. She wasn’t telling the story; she was living it. While this makes the story more exciting and engaging, it also brings forth the death-trap, said head-hopping. You can only live a story in one head at a time. ;)

Before I move past the negatives, one more thing … I’d have liked some more background, some more set dates! What year are we in? How long have Jenelle and Norman been married? How much age-difference is there between Norman and Orlena? More details about their parents? More details about their childhood, especially Norman’s? Perhaps these will be given in the next book, though.

However, these things didn’t really detract from my enjoyment of the story much. I still found it entertaining and delightful and sweet and sad and joyful. Miss Morris really knows how to bring all the emotions to play. And her books are so clean … it’s almost miraculous. I sit there going, “Where does the conflict come from!?” But it’s there, none-the-less. (Just kidding … but it’s kinda true; a lot of authors do add content in for the sake of conflict! Messed up, I know!)

This is the other book I picked up at the OCEANetwork Homeschool Convention's Homeschooled Authors table. I do judge books by their covers, and this book owned a well-done and quite appealing one. I was also really excited by the rumor that this was a non-violent western (which are so hard to find!); so I decided to bring it home with me, and I haven’t regretted my decision one bit!

The Setting:
This story was set on a ranch in the Midwest. I loved all the mentions of the cattle and the beautiful horses, and its description of ranch life seemed both realistic and interesting to me. : ) The illustrations are just fabulous and really bring to life the world of cowboys and prairies.

The Storyline:
The storyline was really great! I loved watching the journey of the Mavrichs and of their younger sister as well. The plot is cleverly twisted throughout the book, and one would have never guessed how the climax was being set up with an encounter extremely early on in the story! Lessons in controlling a temper and loving difficult people, as well as a clear Gospel presentation, were integrated into the book.

The Characters:
The characters were delightful, at least the ones that were supposed to be. : ) I very much enjoyed Mr. and Mrs. Mavrich, and their relationship was a beautiful reminder of how wonderful marriage can be under Christ’s headship. Mrs. Mavrich was sooo sweet, and Mr. Mavrich was awesome in his own way! : ) I also enjoyed Mrs. O’Conner and their cast and (more importantly) crew of considerate ranch hands including Hardrich, St. John, and Hearter. Orlena was definitely not the protagonist, but she was very real and at some points one could almost understand (definitely not agree with) her.

The Concerns:
Parents should have caution in considering this book for younger readers because of some things that Orlena says in her arguments with her brother. Also, although the marriage relationship between two of the main characters is very sweet and godly, some parents may not want younger readers to read this yet because there is a lot of kissing throughout the book. : )

I found this book so fabulous! The marriage relationship was sweet, the characters and setting felt very real, the lessons were wonderful, and the story was one of loving difficult people and leaning on God! A must read. : )

I really enjoyed the start to this series. I especially loved Jenelle; she was so patient and caring. Norman was really good, too, and I definitely sympathized with his struggle not to lose his temper while not compromising his stand. Orlena--yeesh, not so much. I'm sure she has plenty of growing to do in future books; she certainly needs it badly enough!

The secondary characters were great, too! I loved Mrs. O'Connor and her Irish accent. And Lloyd--not sure if I want to sigh contentedly or just hug him. <3

I would have appreciated a few more scene breaks, just because the passage of time wasn't always obvious at a glance. Some scenes also leaned a bit heavily toward telling rather than showing. But I liked the characters a lot, and I'm definitely looking forward to the next books in the series!

Age Appropriate For: All Ages
Best for Ages: 10-16

I was intrigued not only by the description of this book, but also the lovely cover. I bought myself a copy of the e-book while it was on sale, and it quickly made it to the top of my to-read list.

The writing was much stronger than I anticipated. While I think that teen readers will get the most out of this story, older readers won’t be put off by juvenile writing. Morris has a good grasp on the craft of writing. The only major flaw was sudden point-of-view changes.

The story itself was a slower moving story, taking time to develop the characters and give glimpses into everyday life. There were a couple of points where I was ready for the speed of the story to pick up, but the pace was steadily the same. It helped me to remember to slow down and enjoy the development of a story better.

The characters where fairly well done and likable. Jennelle was a bit too perfect in my mind. I kept waiting for her to get a little irritated at Orlena at least once, but it didn’t happen. Norman and Orlena were both very believable in both their actions and internal thoughts.

I really appreciate the strong values that were portrayed in this story, without being preachy or overt. Doing what was right and following Jesus were just who and what Jenelle and Norman were. There was never a point I felt like rolling my eyes because of a cheesy message, and I applaud Morris for accomplishing that.

Overall I really enjoyed the story and look forward to reading more by this author at some point. I am sure that she will do better with each book she writes and will continue to turn out godly, moral stories that both parents and children will love.

I highly recommend this book to younger readers who enjoy westerns, stories about daily life, and character building stories.

What a sweet book- it had all of the amazing qualities! The characters were very well-developed, even the ranch hands. Norman and Jenelle's love for each other was obvious, and I just loved Jenelle's patience. Of course, we needed a little of Norman's impatience, too. I liked Orlena's backstory, and her reasons for doing things. Her change of heart was very sweet, too. I didn't exactly know why Jenelle wasn't feeling well, though. I wondered if she was pregnant, but it never happened! The problem seemed to just disappear when Mrs. O'Connell arrived.
The ranch was described very well, yet it wasn't too much to bore me. It doesn't take much for a description to bore me.
The writing was good; however, me being a writer, found several places that could have been reworded better and words that should have had a comma following it. As a pure reader, though, it didn't detract from the story.
Overall, this was a sweet story with no questionable content, and a change from a ranch romance. The characters were all realistic and human, and the Christianity was woven all throughout the book. I certainly want to read the next book!

Genre: Christian Fiction.

Rating: 5 Stars.

Recommendation: Anyone.

My favorite character/s: Jenelle Mavrich is sweet kind and caring, she shows patience that only comes from God in dealing with Orlena, she tries to show Orlena Christ's love but Orlena won't listen. She tries to get through to Orlena but Orlena is determined not to let anyone in. Then Norman has an accident and Jenelle has to take care of him.

My Verse for Jenelle is Hebrews 10:36 For ye have need of patience that, after ye have done the will of God, ye might receive the promise. In the English Standard Version Bible (ESV).

Norman Mavrich is the owner of Triple Creek Ranch and his Grandmother has died so he is now Orlena's guardian who is his little sister who he has rarely seen. And he doesn't know her and she is determined to make him send her to a finishing school. He is a kind and loving brother but she just might make him snap.

My Verse for Romans 8:25 But if we hope for that we see not, then do we with patience wait for it. In the English Standard Version Bible (ESV).

When Norman Mavrich's grandmother died, he and his wife Janelle became guardians of a holy terror. Orlena was raised by their grandmother to be a spoiled rich child with servants, private boarding schools and anything she wanted. Now, Norman was to rear his 12 year old sister on his ranch without all the comforts of her life with Grandmother. No servants, no boarding school AND she was expected to do chores. Orlena threw temper tantrums over everything, claimed everyone else was selfish, stupid and rude, her mantra being, "You can't make me!"
Life on Triple Creek Ranch was in turmoil.
I will not give this a negative review, even though it was not for me. The writing is simple. It surprised me that none of the reviews said it was elementary level reading. So, I'd say it's a book for a child...5th grade+ reading level with a good story.
I would never recommend this for an adult, but I'd whole heartedly recommend it for a middle school youngster. Great Christian morals!

This was such a refreshing read. Rebekah A. Morris did a great job. We need more people who are willing to write clean books and I applaud this author for doing so.

I really enjoyed the story and the strong faith elements in it. All the characters were great. I loved Jenelle; she was so sweet-tempered and kind. I really liked Norman, too. I liked how the Maverich's and the ranch hands were all like one big family and everyone was treated with love and respect.

Orlena Maverich was difficult to live with, but I love Jenelle's sweet patience with her, and Norman's resolve to do what was right.

Again, this author did a fabulous job and I highly recommend it to anyone who loves clean fiction.

11-2025 I have lost count how many times I have reread this book/series. This is my second round this year. Love these books.

Second time around: Still love it! I found more humor in the story this time. TCR #1 is on my list of repeat-reads.

Original review: I really enjoyed this audiobook. Unbroken is centered around the troubled relationship between an eleven-year-old spoiled brat and her older brother, whom she has to live with after the death of her grandmother. She hates living on his ranch and lets him know. Daily. She was horrible in how she spoke to and about the hired hands and even her brother's wife. My blood boiled a few times while listening to it! However, by the end, I was feeling some compassion for the girl. Great book!

Loved it!
12 year old girls can be a handful,
and this one takes the cake!

And yet, so many adults, also, strive to be 'somebody',
so special, that,
all other people are peons,
are just alive,
to serve their mean spirited whims!

Such ONLY materially and status oriented folk,
are never satisfied, never truly happy,
always demanding,
but deep down inside, they are broken...

However, for other people to love such self-centered folk
and to truly love:

such angry, hurtful, cruel, spiteful, vindictive,
proud, unkind, non compassionate, self-centered etc. etc. people,
takes a LOT of prayer, patience, and love.

and so it was needed with 12 year old, Orlena!

There was some very good Christian doctrine, and application of scripture
that I needed to hear.

I probably would have snapped at her more than her brother...
I might have even yelled arrghh!

Still, I could feel sorry for her.
She lived a young life of luxury, being pampered, and a spoiled brat!

But she was dirt poor in character,
and in having any ability to love and be loved.
So she was a sad puppy!

I loved the ending...it could have turned out so badly!
But her brother and wife, did the true godly thing!
They showed her love like Jesus.
She still is an unbeliever tho...
Now she thinks she can be 'good'
instead of a terror...
by her own will.

I a thinking that might be shown not to work in the next in the series.
