The Premise: High Stakes in the City of Sin
In the second installment of the Cupids & Goddesses series, Milena McKay takes the whimsical concept of modern-day cupids and shifts the focus from the trainees to the source of love herself: Aphrodite. The setting is the annual Cupids' Convention in Las Vegas, but the mood is far from festive for the Goddess of Love. Zeus has decided to play matchmaker for Aphrodite, challenging the assembly to find her "Perfect Match."
Aphrodite, fiercely independent and weary of Olympian meddling, finds herself in a whirlwind of romance tropes—enemies-to-lovers, forced proximity, and second chances—as she tries to outmaneuver her family while unexpectedly falling for the quiet, tweed-clad Goddess of Wisdom, Athena.
What Works: Why It’s a 4.5-Star Standout
The "Trope-y" Humor: This novella is a love letter to the romance genre. McKay leans into every classic trope with a wink and a nudge, making the story both a hilarious satire and a deeply satisfying romance. The "elbow patches" and "tweed" descriptions for Athena are a particular highlight for fans of the "Sapphic Academic" aesthetic.
The Dynamic Chemistry: The "Opposites Attract" energy between Aphrodite (the flashy, chaotic Goddess of Love) and Athena (the stoic, intellectual Goddess of Wisdom) is electric. McKay manages to make a centuries-old mythology feel fresh, sexy, and incredibly modern.
Cameos and World-Building: Fans of the first book (The Perfect Match) will be thrilled to see Sabine and Abby return. Their domestic bliss acts as a grounded anchor to the Olympian chaos, and seeing them after three years of marriage adds a layer of warmth to the series.
Exceptional Narration: For those who consume this as an audiobook, Abby Craden’s performance elevates the material even further. Her ability to capture both the snarky wit of the dialogue and the high-stakes angst of the goddesses makes it an immersive experience.
The "0.5" Deduction
The only thing preventing a perfect score is the novella length. At just over 100 pages, the resolution of the conflict with Zeus and the final romantic union can feel a bit compressed. Readers who are used to McKay's doorstopper-sized novels (The Headmistress or The Delicate Things We Make) might find themselves wishing for another 100 pages to explore the nuances of the Aphrodite/Athena history.
Final Verdict
The Perfect Matchmaking is a masterclass in how to write a fun, spicy, and intelligent romantic comedy. It balances the absurdity of gods in Las Vegas with the genuine emotional weight of a woman (even a goddess) fighting for her right to choose her own path. It’s lighthearted without being shallow and angsty without being exhausting.
