Mrs. Ambrosia Bloomington is finally free. Widowed and ready for a fresh start, she’s set her sights on Mayfair—determined to live life on her own terms, without the shadow of her late husband.
She doesn’t expect the maddeningly confident—and disarmingly charming—Frenchman Mr. Dashwood Beckman to derail her journey and turn it into an unexpected adventure. Nor does she anticipate his laughter, his warmth… or the sparks that fly between them.
But Dash carries secrets of his own—and Ambrosia won’t realize just how big they are until it may be too late.
A shorter version of this story was first published as Cocky Duke in 2020, as part of the Cocky Hero Shared World. The The Duke that I Lost , however, includes enhanced material and significant changes, and is Book One in Annabelle Anders’ newest Regency series, Scoundrels with Secrets—about six troubled men, bound by one tragic mistake... and the women who just might redeem them.
Married to the same man for over 25 years, I am a mother to three children and two Miniature Wiener dogs.
After owning a business and experiencing considerable success, my husband and I got caught in the financial crisis and lost everything in 2008; our business, our home, even our car.
At this point, I put my B.A. in Poly Sci to use and took work as a waitress and bartender (Insert irony). Unwilling to give up on a professional life, I simultaneously went back to college and obtained a degree in Energy Management.
And then the energy market dropped off.
And then my dog died.
I can only be grateful for this series of unfortunate events, for, with nothing to lose and completely demoralized, I sat down and began to write the romance novels which had until then, existed only my imagination. After publishing over twenty novels now, with one having been nominated for RWA’s Distinguished ™RITA Award in 2019, I am happy to tell you that I have finally found my place in life.
Thank you so much for being a part of my journey!

Annabelle Anders is one of the authors on my "favorite authors" list. I find her to be a really good author with really good writing. She has great stories and good sex. I’ve read 52 of her books and have been reading her since 2018. So looking forward to this new series.
This is a little outside by normal trope but still a good read. I liked Ambrosia and Dash. As some of you know, I don't read book descriptions so have no idea what a book is about. I think it's a good sign, although frustrating when you get all the feels reading a book. Mr. Dog was so cute and his antics. Dash pissed me off way more than once. I can't believe what he did although I understand, it was still gasp worthy. I'm glad Ambrosia was strong and didn't just give in right away. She made him work for it. Overall a really good read. Looking forward to the next ones.
“Of course she was the center of attention — how could she not be? That room evolved around her the way the earth tilted toward the sun.”
In The Duke that I Lost, Annabelle Anders takes readers on a journey across the English countryside to fashionable London. We follow recently widowed Ambroisa Bloomington, a modest woman intent on designing a life for herself after a marriage of entrapment and obligation. On her way to London to inherent her own estate, she runs into the bold, wickedly charming Mr. Dashwood Beckman, a Frenchman with an obscured past promising secrets untold. The unlikely pair embark on an adventure of mishaps and detours, as a growing friendship dares to blossom into something more. But as their bond strengthens, both characters are forced to confront their own obstacles; will Ambrosia open herself up to a life of uncertainty, and will Dash risk the pain of lowering his defenses? As one of the easiest 5 star reads I’ve experienced this year, this book is destined to seize your attention as skillfully as the duke captures the heart of Mrs. Bloomington.
The Duke that I Lost is more than a simple love story. The author strikes at the heart of what it means to discover love in all its vast complexities. Through passion, loss, and redemption, the characters undergo a transformation usually reserved for stories arcing across several books. More than once, I found myself with my hand resting on my heart, hanging on the dialogue of two plausible characters. Ambrosia and Dash are both flawed, realistic people with distinct goals. Trapped by a sense of duty, Dash seeks closure and absolution for his past mistakes. Ambrosia strives to find independence by reclaiming the passions she never allowed herself to explore. They don’t lose themselves when their lives intertwine; their objectives remain uniquely their own. Seeing the evolution of their journeys made me connect to each character separately, rooting for their success at every turn.
Their individualism, however, does not override the sizzling chemistry that turns this story from literary fiction into historical romance. Replete with satisfying banter, exquisite intimacy, and delicious groveling, I was genuinely giggling more times than I can count. In my experience, no measurement for romance novels is greater than how often I want to kick my feet like a schoolgirl. Their palpable connection made me hesitant to reach the final page, wishing I could experience their love for just one more chapter.
Additionally, themes of both autonomy and fate expertly interplay, enabling readers to form their own perspective on whether love is a choice or an inevitability. What leads two people together, and at what point does decision take precedence over chance?
I loved how Anders does not sidestep the characters’ mistakes for the sake of plot convenience; rather, she deals with characters’ consequences head on as they reckon with the faults of their actions. When Dash attempts to rectify past errors, he doesn’t expect forgiveness to be delivered in a handbasket. Ambrosia beautifully demonstrates the hesitation of opening oneself to love after betrayal, fearful of placing her heart in the hands of the very man who has the capability to it. Both must learn to slowly release their anxieties through genuine vulnerability and communication. The result? A rich exhibition of desperate pining from a man who has nothing to lose. If you enjoy seeing a man on his hands and knees - literally - this is a story that will make your heart skip a beat.
This book left me craving more of Anders’ writing, and I can’t wait to read the other books in the Scoundrels with Secrets series. Please do yourself the favor of picking up this heartwarming tale! You won’t regret falling into the lives of a dashing duke and his elusive princesse.
This honest review was written in exchange for an ARC and all opinions are entirely my own.
Mrs. Ambrosia Bloomington is now a widow & at last she can leave the oppressive household of her late husband’s relatives & start a new life amongst Mayfair elites. She does not, however, bargain for cocksure Frenchman, Mr. Dashwood Beckman coming along and turning her very ordinary journey into the adventure of a lifetime. Another well written, engaging, engrossing read. Strong characters with plenty of depth but then the author doesn’t do two dimensional. I loved both Aubrey & Dash who both fell hard & fast for each other but not everything was as it seemed. A lovely romance that took you through a gamut of emotions as the road to their HEA was strewn with obstacles, did they overcome them? You’ll have to read to see My honest review is for a special copy I voluntarily read
This is the most wonderfully entertaining story. Ambrosia Bloomington, a widow is traveling to London to start a new life. On her journey to London, she meets Mr. Dashwood Beckman at an inn. When his horse is taken from the inn, they travel together in her coach. The chemistry between Ambrosia and Dash is wonderful, even though he is evasive when Ambrosia asks questions. This is by far one of the best historical romances I have read. There are so many emotional moments throughout the story, interesting secondary characters, and a beautiful storyline.
Title: The Duke that I Lost Author: Annabelle Anders I read this book thinking that it would be another normal romance novel for me to read. Yes I’ve read some good ones. I even read some that had me questioning myself- why did I spend my time opening this book? But there are those that moved me substantially. I simply couldn’t come back from them? The processing from what I read was too great. Personally I really didn’t want to come back from it. I wanted to live in the pure exhilaration of this story. I rejoiced in how the main characters arrived to where they found some semblance of their story. My favorite character of course is the main male character Dash. Half French and English. This man had me melting with that golden tongue of his. He most certainly did the same for Ambrosia. He’s a good distraction for any viral woman. But back to me. I absolutely love is name Dash. It’s very French and sinfully meant for him. I mean what woman wouldn’t want call out a name like “Dash” during the throws of ecstasy? Girl… be for real if you’re pretending like you don’t know what I mean. I ate this book up. Maybe even licked my fingers a time or two. The writing is truly remarkable. In fact it’s so brilliant that it’s in my opinion that the book should be written into a manuscript for a movie. The book is that great. The story of two destined souls captivated me from the most prepossessing moment. The moment when Dash spots Ambrosia taking a shall we say, leisurely look at his backside while he tended to his favorite girl Guinevere. I found myself somewhat flush at the dialogue that he whispered to her. Such a romantic he is. Dash’s words could melt your heart and have you panting for more. Oooo. Ladies this Frenchman has no shame with his wicked ways. Please don’t stop! I can see how Ambrosia fell for Dash, even though there was a lot of trials that she went through to get to that point. Dash is a gentleman and a Rake all in one breath. He’s an intriguing man for anyone who wants to know him. Ladies I could only imagine this man as a dark haired Adonis. Six foot tall, with muscular shoulders that are built like an ox. Thick and desirable smooth thighs up to his backside that are shaped like the thighs of a Shire Horse. A beautiful wide smile that just won’t quit. Oooo and that mouth. It was made to do some sinfully things besides smiling. And his piercing blue eyes that are so blue, they’ll make you want to take dip and revel bathing in them. He makes me want to quiver all inside when I picture him. Like I said the writing is just marvelous. Yes indeed. Ambrosia has been gifted a special treat. I liked that she’s a young widow of a mature age. Ambrosia is a six and twenty widow who has confidence enough to take that leap as a independent woman, and salivate over an irresistible specimen. I was happy to read Ambrosia’s character as not being too dramatic, bored or influenced by the aristocratic nobles. She’s a beautiful woman with sensual figure, and alluring qualities that certainly had Dash dreaming about his perfect woman. I wouldn’t say that their story is an instant love or a slow burn, but the romance story moved with an excellent pace and so much written devotion to the main characters. Dash and Ambrosia’s story starts very respectful, polite and sometimes significantly funny. These moments come when the duo find themselves in some precarious situations. Having Mr. Dog around didn’t help at all. Mr. Dog didn’t much care with what was happening around him. As long as he’s living the high life. Being chauffeured around with his paws never needing to touching the ground and his own cushiony carriage seat - he’s the happiest dog in London. I only have raving comments about this book. The story seems to read and feel almost like an intoxicating experience during Dash and Ambrosia’s periods of travel. Were they spend a few moments getting to know one other. Those are the occasions where the reader would like to slowly take their time reading and enjoying the story. It’s a romantic tale that every young woman would like or love to experience. As you read further into the story the dialogue between Ambrosia and Dash becomes very intimate and genuinely sweet. You can almost find yourself hoping Dash will kiss her at that time. Maybe he will give her that passionate kiss that’s thoroughly detailed for your imagination later on in the book. When Dash made love. He made loooove like a man who was fearful of not having you again. So when he gave- the man gave. It was slow… It was intimate… It was carnal… It was hot… It was dominate and he was all mine. At least that was in my imagination he was all mine. The emotional strong feelings come later on in the book, where the characters are faced with some challenges that they had to own up too. This is where the story really ran deep for me. I understood the characters heartaches through their dialogue and the narration. The confessions between Dash and Ambrosia are all too real to comprehend. Either it was through their feelings being wonderfully laid out. Through the good detailing of their actions. The brilliant writing from their raw emotions of desperation. Perhaps even their despair. Readers I strongly believed that there was no coming back to that magical place of earlier times at the start of such a beautiful friendship. Damn those obligations. Those friends or family that place good hearted souls in incomprehensible situations that threatened to dismantled everything that’s right. I silently cried for Ambrosia and I most sincerely cried for Dash. It was too much for me to go on reading their story, but I had to know. I just had to know what was going to happen. This remarkable journey was ripping my heart in two. No man or woman could go through these events without a thought of no return. And the woman. The pure tragedy of secrets being revealed slaps you in the face as though you were slapped by your mother. That’s the sting that leaves you wondering how to perceive such treachery. By the ending I was elated, but just spent. I was on an emotional high and I knew at that moment that I read something magnificent. Something that I wouldn’t forget for quite sometime. This is book is majestic. Exceptional. It’s rough, but abundantly powerful in many ways. Emotional. Fun. Delightful. Thoughtful and so romantic. So, so romantic and sensually charged I might add. The romance between Dash and Ambrosia’s wraps itself around you almost like a warm fleece blanket that embraces you whole on a cool, crisp fall night. Here is where I must share with you that I truly loved the creativity of the characters. The plot and the characters background story written by the author. This story is intriguing and most captivating. I wanted to stay in this story just to see where Ambrosia and Dash would take me next. This leaves me respecting the phenomenal writing from this author. I give this book two golden snaps and a- Bea if you were not my sister… Until next time my fellow readers. Read on!
I truly loved reading this book! ❤️ The plot was captivating and fun at times but there was a lot of angst as well.
Mrs Ambrosia Bloomington is on her way to London to start her new life after she finishes her mourning period of her husband who never loved her. She stops at an inn for the night and meets Mr Dashwood (Dash) Beckman. A very unfortunate event leads him to ask if he can travel with her in her carriage to London. The week they spend together travelling is full of tender moments, misunderstandings and discovering true love. These two are soul mates but Dash has secrets from his past and present and has an obligation to fulfill so he can’t commit to her. The annoying part was he wouldn’t tell her anything to help her understand why he couldn’t be with her. She is left broken hearted. There’s also a very sweet four legged friend that is taken in by Ambrosia on their way to London.
Years later, when his obligation is over, Dash seeks out Ambrosia to see if she is happy with her life. She is stunned to see him when they are accidentally reintroduced and also learning about two of the secrets he failed to reveal during their fateful week years ago. Dash is desperate to make things right between them again but she seems to have moved on and found contentment in her new life. A friend of Dash’s seems to have staked his claim on her but does she really want him? This time it’s Dash, or Duke of Dasborough as he is now known, to live with a broken heart. He does all he can to try to win her back but will he do enough to mend their broken hearts?
This book had me reeling from differing emotions throughout. There’s a great slow burn romance between them and beautifully written love scenes. I fell in love with Dash, the cheeky, flirty French man who stole Ambrosia’s heart. Ambrosia was brave but lacked self confidence due to her loveless marriage to a controlling husband. Dash helped her confidence and made her feel worthy in the short time they were together in the beginning and her confidence grew with the new friendships she made once she settled in London but her heart remained broken. Dash knew he had wronged Ambrosia and tries to do anything to help prove to her that he will never have secrets between them again but telling her the truth makes her doubt her own reality as an independent woman. There are some wonderful secondary characters; Dash’s sister Beatrice and Dash’s friends that he first met at school who enhance the plot and one that seems to possibly be trouble in the future. There’s also a lovely epilogue. I can’t wait to read further books in this series. I received a special copy of this book from the author, I’m voluntarily leaving this review.
Mrs. Ambrosia Bloomington, recently widowed, is finally free from her indifferent, older husband and his overbearing family. Determined to embrace a fresh start in London, she plans to live life on her own terms—no men allowed. However, fate has other plans.
At an inn, things quickly go awry, and Ambrosia finds herself reluctantly accepting help from the charming Frenchman, Mr. Dashwood Beckman. What begins as an inconvenient alliance soon transforms into an unexpected adventure filled with witty banter, undeniable chemistry, and guarded hearts. Though Dash shares glimpses of his past, Ambrosia senses he's holding back. Despite her best efforts to resist, she falls for him—and Dash, bound by secrets he cannot reveal, falls for her too.
Their brief, passionate connection is shattered when Dash disappears without a word, leaving Ambrosia heartbroken. Yet, life goes on. She builds a comfortable new existence in London, until—two years later—Dash reappears, determined to make amends. On top, of his disappearing he is actually a Duke. Ambrosia isn’t one to forgive easily, and watching Dash earn his redemption is both satisfying and heartfelt. There’s skulking, relentless gardening (yes, gardening), soul-baring confessions, and a lot of well deserved groveling.
This story is an emotional rollercoaster that pulled me in from the start. The author masterfully navigates personal growth, the weight of obligations, and the unexpected nature of love. The devotion, the secrets, the obstacles—they all kept me guessing and completely invested.
I absolutely loved this journey. It was emotional, fun, intriguing, heartbreaking, and uplifting all at once. The connection between Ambrosia and Dash felt genuine and was beautifully written. It's a story about two people who weren’t looking for love but found something extraordinary through circumstance.
I’m beyond excited for the next installment in Annabelle Anders’ newest Regency series, Scoundrels with Secrets. If Dash and Ambrosia are just first glimpse, I look forward to the remaining troubled men bound by one tragic mistake and the women strong enough to redeem them—we’re in for an incredible ride. Bravo, Annabelle Anders, for crafting such a heartfelt and unforgettable story.
I received a free ARC (advanced review copy) and am sharing my thoughts voluntarily.
A great start to the new series and a stirring and touching love story about two strangers who meet under fateful circumstances, become friends, and fall in love, but are unable to be together for a long time due to feelings of guilt, obligations, lies by omission, and distrust. The plot is very well written, emotional, has a few steamy love scenes and the following tropes:
- Strangers to friends to lovers - Hidden identity - Road-trip - Close proximity - Second to lovers - Redemption arc
Ambrosia and Dash are wonderful characters whose attraction and chemistry are palpable from the start. She is a young widow looking to start over, and Dash is a cocksure, flirtatious rogue with secrets. I loved his accent and the way he boosted her confidence and passion for adventure and life. Their interactions with the dog and horse were adorable.
After years trapped in an unhappy marriage with a tyrannical husband, the widowed Mrs. Ambrosia Bloomington enjoys her newfound freedom and travels to London to start a new life with her unexpected inheritance. On the way, she encounters the charming and cocky Frenchman Dashwood "Dash" Beckman, whose horse has been stolen. Ambrosia agrees to take the mysterious man, whom she finds attractive but who consistently evades her questions about himself, to London. During their turbulent journey together, they grow closer, but then Dash suddenly disappears without a word, leaving Ambrosia heartbroken. Two years later, Dash, the Duke of Dasborough, is finally free of his obligations and travels to London to see Ambrosia again, who has successfully established herself in society. Parting from her had been the hardest decision and his greatest regret. But will she be able to forgive him for keeping secrets from her and disappearing from her life without saying goodbye, and trust him again?
If you like emotional historical romance novels with great character development and groveling heroes, you are sure to enjoy this book.
I received a free ARC of this book. Opinions expressed in this review are completely my own and left voluntarily.
Ambrosia & Dash Married at 17, widowed at 24, she’s never known love, or even been kissed, but in a fortuitous twist of fate, her husband left her his Mayfair townhouse, and thus a chance for independence and realising her dreams. Born and raised in France, sent to a harsh English boarding school by his father, mocked for his mixed roots, entangled in the demise of his friend – most memories he’d like to forget, just like the promise he made to make things right. They meet at a country inn with no rooms available. His horse stolen, her driver too drunk, they agree to continue on to London together – and so their road trip begins...
Naive and prudish she’s only just discovering that everything good isn’t a sin, and he’s this suave stranger, an unabashed flirt – but with her, his title a secret, he’s more himself than ever before. As their friendship grows, he guards his secrets and her honour... or almost.
It was a joy seeing this man boost his princess’s confidence! A stray puppy, chivalry, shared sweets, a night under the stars, a little detour, a broken wheel, kind strangers and a village fair – and of course their hearts start wanting what cannot be.
Until he disappears... only to reappear two years later. She’s more than a little vexed, and he’s desperate to get her back – no matter if his friends are doing their darndest to claim his turf. Cue some skulking, lots of diligent gardening, heartbreaking confessions and first-class grovelling – boy oh boy, does she make him grovel, and he delivers! The despair, the agony, the pining – sometimes it’s nice to see a man suffer, and he does it so well! But he’s not alone in his suffering, she just carries it with more dignity. Delicious!
I devoured this book! The wit, the tension, the devotion, every setback, every small victory – an exquisite enthralling epic romance that simply swept me off my feet!
This was originally called COCKY DUKE back in 2020. A lot more content was added making it enhanced material and significant changes.
I did think this had more content than the original story, but it was slow at times. I did like how in the beginning they grew to know each other.
You learn later why the H did what he did. I had a problem with this because there was no reason he shouldn't have told the h. She would have been understanding. The H's best friend knew something that happened at school, and he didn't see what his friend was suffering, made bad choices. Doesn't tell him until 15 or so years later, the H's life would have been so different.
There is a possible villain, but that part of the story didn't go anywhere. I did like how the h didn't forgive the H easily.
The funny looking dog added some humor to this story and made me laugh.
You realize who the H is and hid his title from the h and then you know they aren't together. You know this because the Title tells you - wish the title was different, because it gave too much away.
No cheating, no cliffhanger, HEA, some romance, and lovemaking outside of marriage, heat level 4.5 out of 5 and I think only described twice. I can't improve on the blurb, just giving you extra tidbits to decide whether to purchase.
I received ARC and all opinions are my own and freely given. (ljb)
Ambrosia Bloomington was beginning her life as a widow but it wasn't going very well. Dash Beckman was traveling by horse to a meeting. Both were trying to book a room at the inn where they had both stopped. Unfortunately, there was no room at the inn. They both proceed to travel to the next in down the road. When they came out Dash's horse was missing. How was he going to get anywhere? Since they were both going to the same place he suggested that they travel together. Over the next week, they become attracted to each other and fall in love. Just when things seem to be going well, he disappears without even a goodbye. Heartbroken, Ambrosia continues on the London to begin her new life alone. Suddenly, 2 years later, a Duke shows up in town. When he's introduced to Ambrosia she doesn't see a Duke but Mr Beckman the man who had broken her heart. Now, Dash must do whatever it takes to show her that he loves her and they belong together. You can't deny that he broke her heart but will he be able to heal it? There are sections where tears will come, not just Ambrosias's but your own. When the Happily Ever After comes it is worth the wait.
Ambrosia Bloomington is now a widow on her way to Mayfair to start a new life. She meets Dashwood Beckman a Frenchman at an inn they both had stopped at to rest and get rooms. Problems begin when the innkeeper tells them he has no rooms available, then she realizes her carriage has a broken wheel and he finds out someone stole his horse. They make a pack he will fix her carriage and she will allow him to travel with her. Along the way they start developing a friendship along with other feelings. But Dash has secrets that he is not willing to share and just wants to spend time with her. When his secrets are finally revealed will it be too late for both of them?
I loved Ambrosia and Dash’s story!! It was full of adventure, very emotional and such a wonderful story. I thought both character were very likable and perfect for each other. The secondary character were delightful and really added to the story. I thought the story was well written and you could feel all of the emotions they were going through before they were able to get to their HEA. I highly recommend this book!!
Ambrosia has endured her mourning period and is leaving her late husband’s family to find a life of her own. During her journey she meets Dash Beckman and, through a series of events, spends a week traveling together with him to London. Sometimes a week is enough time to know you’ve met someone special.
Unfortunately, Dash disappears. Ambrosia knew he was hiding something, but she never discovered what it was.
When he reappears, two years later, Ambrosia has already made her new life in London. She has gotten over Dash. Or has she? Dash, for his part, has some serious making up to do.
This is a story of love and longing, a slow burn that sometimes seems like it won’t work out. Not to spoil it, but don’t worry. These two wonderful characters just have a harder journey to HEA than most. But they get there. After all, it’s fate.
What a great story by Annabelle Anders!! I am so glad I was able to read Dash and Ambrosia’s story. They are forced to spend time along in a carriage when Dash’s horse is stolen and he offers to fix the broken wheel on her carriage in exchange for riding along with her to London. Along the way they are tempted by the intense attraction they have and Dash is determined to respect her and not compromise her as he knows he cannot commit to her. Of course, they eventually give in to the their feelings but end up separating afterwards. 2 years later they meet again and Dash really has to grovel while he attempts to win Ambrosia back. The plot was well written and provided a vast array of emotions- it was funny, sexy, sad and mysterious with a very satisfying HEA. I received an ARC from the author and I am voluntarily leaving a review.
I have loved every Annabelle Anders story that I’ve had the pleasure to read. And this one is amazing! I wish I could give it six stars! Ambrosia and Chance/Dash were so endearing, their relationship so electric, and their banter so delightful , that I wished the book not to end, and have to say goodbye to them. Through a stolen horse and a broken carriage, they meet by chance on their separate journeys to London. I loved how we got to know them so well, as we watched their relationship grow on this long journey through the countryside. But life took them apart by journeys end , and the reader feels the pain in their separation. It’s a long road back to get to their HEA but I have to say that this was one of the most satisfying and beautiful endings that I’ve ever read in a historical romance. Bravo, for a wonderful story!
Annabelle Anders pulled out all of the stuff with this book, from tears of joy, to tears of sadness to heartbreak to sewing my heart back again piece by piece..
Dashwood and Ambrosia really had my attention from the beginning to the end..
Dash and Ambrosia meet at an inn along the road to London.. and they instantly feel the current flowing between them.. and they pick up a darling little dog along the way to make the journey..
This story was breathtaking from chapter 1 to the epilogue..
I only recommend getting some tissues when you start to read it..
I can't wait to read about the rest of the fellas in this series..
I received this book from the author as an advanced reader's copy in exchange for an honest voluntary review and this is purely based upon my own personal opinion and that of no else.
Ahh this was a very good read! Dash and Ambrosia were very sweet together for the most part. I will say I am very happy they found a happy ending and I truly understand why Dash did what he did. The source of the conflict is lack of communication in this book but it didn't bother me. I also really like how even though this book was dual POV, the first half focused on Ambrosia and the second Dash. It made a lot of sense from a story telling perspective and it was slightly different than the normal story telling. I also like how much they talk, sometimes with these types of forced proximity but with travel the couple doesn't talk much and that wasn't the case in this book.
Random Note: not new to this author's books but I do love chapters having titles. Random Note 2: even though I understand why he did what he did, I don't think I would forgive him.
Up front, I will tell you, I have read 358 books this year and this one, BY FAR, is my absolute favorite! I wish I could give this 100 stars! I laughed, I cried, I hurt, I sighed, I curled up in a ball in pain with all the emotions that will be dragged out of you reading this story. Dash is in a hurry, sort of, but when he meets Ambrosia, all time stands still. Their meet cute is adorable, their race to ‘get there first’, hilarious. Their intense bond is just so obvious, it melted my heart. I have not been so affected by a story -especially midway through the story! I wanted to shake some sense into Ambrosia towards the end of the book, with her indecision. And don’t get me started on Lord ‘Grimm’- if he is Dash’s friend, I worry about his enemies. It is clear there is a mystery that will probably take the entire series to finally figure out, and there is an inkling of another story with Hawk involved. I definitely learned A LOT of French (my translator has never been used so much!) and I appreciate the author disguising the f-bomb VERY much! You will not be sorry to get this book. I will have a book ‘hangover’ for a very long time with this one! I received this story for free and these are my own views
If you’re looking for a demure stroll through Regency romance, keep walking. Ambrosia Bloomington may be newly widowed, but she’s not wasting time mourning mediocrity. Enter Dashwood Beckman - French, flirty, & fully capable of turning a carriage ride into chaos. Their chemistry? Immediate. Their obstacles? Deliciously messy. I laughed, I cried, I clutched my pearls. Anders delivers layered characters, sizzling tension, & a love story that hits harder than a duke’s scandal. On my Top 10 book list of the year, no contest.
I voluntarily read and reviewed an Advanced Reader's Copy of this book; all thoughts and opinions are my own.
I've always believed that things need to start with oneself. You can't respect others if you can't respect yourself. Trust, loyalty and love work the same way. No one can make you feel something, you enable them and yourself. Yet, a husband constantly telling you, you are less, fat, etc., it's hard not to let words affect you. When someone makes a promise and then breaks it, trust is broken. This is a wonderful story of learning to trust in one's self and expanding the trust in others. There are quite a few questions not answered and can guess they will be answered in future stories. There is a beginning of a happy ever after, but would have loved to see it take a better root. Enjoy 🤓
A great start to a new series by Annabelle Anders. A heartwarming, tearjerker that I couldn't put down, and wanted more when it was done. The young widow, Mrs. Ambrosia Bloomington spots the gorgeous Dashwood Beckman while stopped overnight at an inn heading to London. He's taking care of his horse while she is sitting watching him out the window, pondering what it would be like to be treated as tenderly as he's treating his horse. This says so much about how her late husband treated her and what she believes she will never have. One stolen horse later these two set out together, become friends and so much more. He has hidden secrets he can't or won't share. There are sparks when these two finally kiss and fire ignites when they finally come together.
A love story I will read again, and I love the easter eggs Annabelle provides for what I hope is the next couple in this series. A steamy read well worth your time, so make room on your TBR, and move it up the list.
This novel started out as very promising. It was filled with romance, longing and love. It was much like books written before the beginning of Covid 19--then it became very modern with explicit anatomical terms and sexual acts. There are many novelists who can write sex scenes that convey romance, desire and sexual intercourse without being so graphic. Also it was ahistoric--Dukes and single women do not travel together. The aristocracy did not actively garden and do carpentry . Words such as bubbies is/are a modern usage. Still and all the story itself was still compelling until it veered into modernism.
You know from the beginning something is up with Dash. He’s secretive and resistant. Ambrosia had a good life until her father died and then she was forced to marry a much older controlling man. Now a widow she was determined to make her own life. She is naive, nervous, but adventurous and meeting Dash opens her inner joy up. Ugh, so yes it wouldn’t be a true romance without heartache and redemption. There is also foreshadowing. It breaks your heart as you read. You sympathize with each character for the choices they make. But ultimately in true romance stories there is a profound happy ending. I wanted more.
Ambrosia Bloomington, a young widow, and Dash Beckman meet at an inn on the way to London. A lack of rooms in the inn and a carriage in need of repair lead to their traveling together. On the way, they got to know each other, and fell in love. Things fall apart when Dash left without saying goodbye. Dash was keeping a couple of important secrets. First, he didn’t tell her that he was the Duke of Dasborough. Neither did he tell her where he was really going and way. Two years later, he came to London to find her, explain himself, and convince her that he loved her. This would not be easy. This is a wonderful story, sort of a delayed love-at-first-sight. Ambrosia and Dash are great characters; their chemistry was immediate and strong. Will Dash be able to win Ambrosia’s forgiveness, or will he lose her to another? A great story, a bit of adventure and lots of romance (including a good dose of groveling). I voluntarily reviewed a special copy of this book.
What a nice story about Ambrosia, who is a widow. Now that she is free, she wants to travel to London and live there. On the way she meets Dash, who is a Duke but does not tell Ambroisa who he is. As Dash and Ambrosia get to know one another, Dash has a secret he is keeping from her (I don’t want to tell you). This secret will separate them for around 2 years. After the 2 years Dash has his work cut out for him to make Ambrosia forgive him. This author always writes an interesting story. I received an ARC of this book, and I am leaving my honest opinion.
Wow!! This was a great start to another fabulous series by one of my favourite authors. You are put through the mill with all kinds of different emotions from both the main characters. The widow and the Duke have a wonderful adventure. Then one morning the Duke just disappears. Ambrosia is left to deal with the fallout and try to get on with her life. There are secrets that need to be revealed, but there is a delay in the truth coming out. A first class story from a first class author. I’m looking forward to see how the rest of the series plays out.
Wow! The Duke I Lost was an amazing ride. I thought each character was developed so well and had such depth. I loved the heroine Ambrosia and the hero Dash. Both are complicated characters who felt real and believable. I felt like I was running through a whole gamut of emotions - from euphoria to despair and back to happiness again. There is some steam in this story so have a fan nearby. Well done!
If you love hidden identities, one horse/carriage/bed, fortune tellers, friends to enemies to lovers, and a cute dog this is a wonderful book. I enjoyed the first part of the book getting to know Dash and Ambrosia and seeing how well they get along with each other. The second part of the book I enjoyed seeing the secondary characters and look forward to the rest of the series with each of Dash's friends getting their HEA.
Surely it couldn’t be too much trouble for this author to do a quick internet search to check on words and terms that weren’t in use during the time in which the book is set. If she’s writing an Historical Novel a small modicum of effort would make it a more authentic experience. I was going to return this book for a refund but didn’t as I like to support authors even if they don’t do a good job.
This book is absolute perfection. The characters are relatable and perfect in their flaws. Dash and Ambrosia meet by accident or so they thought but fate was really what was at hand. Their story has always its ups and downs. I loved seeing the way that the two grew as their story progressed. You will fall in love and believe in fate once you read their story.
