In the tumultuous last half of 1700s America, John is a young man compelled by adventure, fairness, and justice. Driven from his family, he seeks the life of a woodsman, hunting and trapping. Alone, or with friend or foe, he finds danger, death, and love. Tragedy hurls him into madness as he tries to find meaning in the tumult of struggles between dreams of freedom, and power of kings; between spiritual and mundane; between love and hate.
I thought this book was well written and told the story well. John was a sympathetic character who explained by his actions what the title was all about I've long had a fascination with historical folks like Daniel Boone so this was of great interest to my history living heart,
I thoroughly enjoyed this tale of colonial life intermingled with that of our native brothers. I almost feel he could have broke it up into two or more tales. But it was researched in detail and a joy to read. I hope to spend many evenings by the fire partaking in his sequels.
Masterful writing while including the reader in every moment of this saga. The reader becomes one with the main character and experience his joys and heartbreaks. Through his interacting with native Americans and pioneers, we see the forging of the American experience. This novel is highly recommended!
Another fine historical novel, following the main character as he essentially comes of age in the colonies during the French and Indian wars. Well done
