Rate this book
Pre- order a romantic, summery getaway read from bestseller Jennifer Bohnet Every moment is a new beginning on the French Riviera

Five years ago, Adam and Lucy Belgrave took the plunge and bought a sprawling rundown farm in the South of France to bring back to life, much against the advice of Adam’s brother, Elliot.

Today, that dream is becoming a reality and the farm is beginning to thrive and Elliot finds himself grateful for the refuge it provides after his career falters and his marriage fails.

After the death of her beloved granny, a bitter divorce and surprise redundancy - the saying ’sad things come in threes’ resonates with Briony Dymond's life. With her mother by her side, Briony travels to France to learn some news that will change her life completely. Will she have the courage to embrace granny Giselle’s special wishes?

As spring returns to the French Riviera both Elliot and Briony seek to put their pasts behind them and look to find happiness in the future. But can the past give up its hold on the present?

A wonderfully, warm and enchanting tale of new beginnings, second chances and seizing the moment.

Perfect for the fans of Jill Mansell and Fern Britton.

Sixteen years ago Richard and I, with our then dog, 14 year old Holly in a trailer attached to Richard's bike, cycled down through western France via the canal paths, arriving in Antibes in July. With the exception of two fleeting visits back to the UK we have lived in France ever since.

For the past five years we have lived in a small cottage in central Brittany with one large collie dog called Viking, one fat cat known as Little’un and a young tortoiseshell cat called Missy. Oh, and there are various ducks and chickens in the garden, and a large pond with about a hundred fish in!

I have contributed short stories and serials to many of the UK women's magazines including, The People's Friend, Candis, My Weekly, Best, Yours and my stories have been published in Australia, Sweden, South Africa and Ireland.

I also write magazine features and my work has been published in national magazines and newspapers like, The Sunday Times, The Sunday Telegraph, Daily Mail, Daily Telegraph, Home and Country, Devon Life. For over three years I had my own newspaper column in the South Hams Group of Newspapers, that took a wry look at family life.

Jennifer Bohnet’s Amazon tagline says it all: “Her stories usually span the generations with characters ranging in age and having to cope with unexpected problems in their lives.” And ... this book fits that perfectly.

On one side, we have got Adam & Lucy making their dream farm in the French Riviera work, and Elliot (Adam’s brother), who’s trying to start fresh after a messy divorce. On the other, we’ve got Briony, her mom and the inheritance left by her grandmother. Together, they give us that multigenerational blend of struggles and second chances.

I loved the Riviera setting: warm, cozy, and the perfect backdrop for new beginnings. Elliot being a vet? Insta win for me. I also really appreciated that while both Elliot and Briony had to deal with their exes, the drama was kept short, without unnecessary dragging there.

I felt like this book was less about fiery romance and more about healing, friendship and learning to love and trust again; even Briony’s mom gets her own little chance with Yann! The slow burn between Briony and Elliot was fine, but sometimes felt a bit too slow for my taste.

Overall, a warm, comforting story with strong themes of starting over. A lovely, gentle read, even if I personally like a little more intensity in my romance.

Thank you to NetGalley and Boldwood Books for this ARC.

A french inheritance is a contemporary romance about Briony and Elliot , two recently divorcees from London who end up starting from scratch in a small south french village/town: Briony because of her grandma and Elliot because of his brother.
When I picked this up I thought it would've been a small town romance set in the south of France but I was very wrong about that. The small town french vibes where there but not the romance or anything else. Infact a strong character of the book are France's descriptions, they're pretty and immersive and I really liked that at the beginning.
The story read more women's fiction than a romance to me because the focus of narration was taking chances and reinventing your life. Every character that we meet went/is going through that at some point of their lives. So the topic is interesting but the way it was written didn't allow me to care about the characters making the all thing pretty boring to me.
Things I liked:
- France description and story setting: a strong character of the book are France's descriptions, they're pretty and immersive and I really liked that at the beginning.
- Luna, she's adorable lol
- Adam and Lucy goal to restore the land and reading about the business they created.
The dislikes:
- Some plot choices: for example the book takes its time to describe the characters daily life in the countryside but then some decisions that supposed to be important for the plot/character development are taken very quickly and it pulled me out pretty soon from the story.
- too much spent talking logistics, I really don't care what they're bringing in France from their houses lol
- Writing style: it was repetitive and the dialogues felt forced and mechanical no matter who was talking.
- 3rd person POV: made more difficult to connect with characters.
- Many things are told but never shown: like Elliot and his brother suppose to have funny banters but it's we never actually see that.
or Briony describes Elliott friendly with everyone but her but that's not something we see.
- The interactions are either glasses over or again very mechanical which made every romance pretty flat and not believable.
- The scene where they comment the conversation they are spying from afar was so cringe to read.
- Linked to the previous point: some scenes where definitely too dramatic for the significance they had on the plot.

In conclusion unfortunately this book wasn't really for me but I would recommend it if you're just looking for something set in France and don't care about the romance or the emotional side of a story.

Thank you so much Net Galley and Boldwood Books for the ARC.

Ever since I discovered Jennifer Bohnet’s writing I’ve loved her books, especially those set in France & I look forward to her next new release. I love her storytelling & her descriptions that evoke the sights, sounds & aromas of French village life.

This latest book doesn’t disappoint. There’s French village life, themes of new starts & second chances for more than one generation, & a great cast of main characters (& their dogs!). First up we meet Adam & Lucy, empty nesters who’ve bought a dilapidated old farmhouse with outbuildings in southern France & moved there with a vision to do it up & turn it into their home & develop various business opportunities. Five years later they’ve made good progress with this & have recently been joined by Elliot, Adam’s younger brother; he is a veterinary surgeon looking for a new start after an acrimonious divorce & career threatening events. The group of main characters is completed by Briony & her mother Jeannie. They’ve gone through a lot recently with the sudden death of Briony’s father Jerome a few years ago & the recent death of Briony’s beloved Granny Giselle; Briony has also recently gone through an acrimonious divorce & also been made redundant. Jeannie & Briony have come to France to sort out Giselle’s home, which borders Adam & Lucy’s property, & to make decisions about their future.

This sets the scene for the story to develop as Briony & Jeannie settle into village life & ponder their future. I loved the way the friendships developed between these neighbours & enjoyed the role their dogs played too! Elliot was initially very prickly, & I found myself having a strong visceral reaction to one of his early encounters with Briony. The story is well paced, as decisions are made & acted on, friendships made & renewed as Jeannie reconnects with Yann (Briony’s godfather & friend of Jerome). It’s a lovely heartwarming story, believable, with descriptions of the village & surrounding countryside that are so evocative. I was quickly drawn in & couldn’t put it down until I’d reached the end - it was such a great way to spend a wet Sunday afternoon!!

With thanks to Boldwood Books & Netgalley for the opportunity to read an advanced copy of this gorgeous book. All opinions are my own.

This book was shared with me as an ARC, and I thank the author, NetGalley, and the publisher for sharing.

When I saw this book, I was very excited. As a French living in the US, I was interested in reading about a divorced, English woman in her thirties trying to start over in another country.

I liked:
- The small town vibe in the South of France, and the descriptions.
- The will to start over and new.
- Expats in France

But, this book wasn't for me in the end. I had such a hard time getting into it. I didn't DNFed it but was close, and I was dreading through it the entire time.

What I didn't like:

- We follow too many characters in my opinion, and the 3rd person POV doesn't help connect with anyone really.
- The opening doesn't make sense to me, looking back into it. Why start with Adam and Lucy buying the land and discussing their projects when they are not the main characters?
- I feel like all the chapters at some point were the same and didn't bring much to the plotline: wine on the terrasse; walking the dogs to the lake for them to swim
- Writing, dialogues, emotions... all was so mechanical. I don't care much about their logistics and what to keep/what to discard. Too many descriptions (even there, was too mechanical) which took away emotions or the story.
- No romance, no banters... I didn't even understand that they had shared their first kiss. To be fair, I also felt like Brionny said out of nowhere that she liked Elliott.
- Some dialogues were a device to tell us what they would do, or how; even there it felt robotic.
- Apparently friendships were developping, but I didn't see it.

I could keep going but I won't. A book full of "tell" and not "show", bland and too mechanical for me.

These opinions are my own, and don't take away the work of the author.

A French Inheritance by Jennifer Bohnet was a beautifully written book that just stole my heart. When I opened this book on kindle I was hooked and ended up reading it all day. It was beautifully written from start to finish. The way Jennifer writes is just wonderful and captures everything that is around the main characters, you feel you are there with these characters and on the rundown farm in the South if France. ❤️

WoW......This book will keep you entertained till the very end. . . Just a wonderful book that will take your breath away.

I highly recommend this book another 5 ⭐️ ⭐️ ⭐️ ⭐️ ⭐️ read.

A French Inheritance by Jennifer Bohnet is a lovely contemporary novel and makes an excellent summer read. It is due to be published by Boldwood Books on September 15, 2025 and I recommend it because I thoroughly enjoyed my reading experience.

This novel centers on Briony who finds out that she has been laid off on the same day that her divorce becomes final. As she tries to figure out what to do, her mother convinces her that they should take a short trip to France. To add to Briony's misery, her beloved aunt has recently passed away. As it turns out, she has inherited some property in the French countryside and has to make several decisions in quick succession.

I really appreciated the focus on family, the theme of facing the past and embracing the future, the prominent presence of dogs, and the cozy vacation vibes of the whole book. While the timing of many of the events of the book were rather convenient and somewhat unrealistic, I understand how they furthered the book's message.

As mentioned, I truly enjoyed this book and would read from this author again. Anyone looking for a good summer read should pick up A French Inheritance.

Thank you very much to publisher Boldwood Books and the author for providing a digital advance reader copy via NetGalley for review consideration. All opinions are my own.

Here we have another story by Jennifer Bohnet which captures the feeling of living in France and makes you want to travel there to see the countryside which she describes. Briony and her mother, Jeannie, have to sort out their beloved relative's cottage and find that this gives them lifechanging opportunities which they had not expected. Briony is at a crossroads in her life after a difficult divorce and a shock development at the auction house where she works. Jeannie, a widow, is ready for a change in her life and wondering whether she can move on from the death of her husband.

Briony's neighbours turn out to be firm friends. Adam and Lucy have settled in France and built up the farm and farm house which they took the plunge and bought five years ago. Also there is Adam's brother, Eliot, who has noved there after a traumatic divorce and is looking to start his career as a vet with a new start. Both he and Briony have commitment worries and neither is looking for a new relationship. However, as the months pass, their friendship deepens.

There are several storythreads in this novel with more than one romance. New starts and starting over, family and friendship are all intrinsic themes. The past also has a huge impact on the present and the animals in the story add to the warm and family feel.

In short: New starts and second chances

Briony and her mother, Jeannie, still reeling from Briony's grandmother Giselle's death, have to go to Southern France to deal with Giselle's cottage. Briony is surprised to disccover that the cottage is to be hers, because of french inheritance laws, but she cannot decide what to do. Briony has just come out of a messy divorce and has recently lost her job and her mother convinces her that a trip to Granny Giselle's cottage will help her heal. Jeannie is also excited to meet up with Yann, an old firend, who she hopes could one dday be more.

Meanwhile Adam and Lucy have bought an old estate on the neighbouring lands and have been fixing it up over the last few years with love and care returning it to its former glory. Adam's brother Elliott, now the local veterinarian has recently come to stay with them after his divorce, until he finds a place of his own. Thus is the set up for Briony and Elliott to bump into one another and although their first few meetings are awkward, there are sparks there as well.

This was a lovely read with beautiful scenery. This author always writes a lovely romance, sometimes it is nice to read a seciond chance romance for us older gals.

Thank you to NetGalley, the publishing house and the author for the opportunity to read a complimentary copy of this book in return for a review based upon my honest opinion.

Set mostly in Provence in southern France, A French Inheritance is very uch a story of second chances as the main protagonists are both recently divorced and mentally scarred from the experiences. Vet Elliott Belgrave is living in one of the farm houses that have been renovated. on his brother Adm’s farm-stay property. He’s a very private man and clearly doesn’t want to become involved in any sort of relationship other than with his trusty dog. Briony has inheritaged her grandmother’s farmhouse, which neighbours Adam and Lucy’s place. She and Lucy are friends and, while she wants nothing romantic to do with any man on the planet, she finds herself drawn to Elliott. I loved watching the friendship grow between these two as they settled into the village. It was also lovely to see how the dogs in the story helped to heal each of them and to bring them together. Meanwhile Briony’s mother Jeannie, a widow, has moved to the farmhouse to live with her daughter, and not surprisingly, she too has a romance blossoming with her deceased husband’s best friend Yann. The romances in this story are gentle and charming. Watching the background events, such as the growth of Lucy’s business with Briony’s help, set the scene for a beautiful and relaxing feel-good story.

New beginnings, fresh starts,
A chance to heal broken hearts.
Secrets from the past and romances old and new -
No wonder I highly recommend this book to you!

They say things come in threes
And Briony Dymond currently agrees.
She had a bitter divorce, her granny passed away
She was made redundant, hopefully no more is on its way!

Briony agrees to travel to France with her mother
And it is good news there she has to discover.
Her French granny Giselle has left some special requests
Will Briony decide following them will be for the best?

Sorting out her granny's home with her Mum
Could be something to make them both glum.
But possibilities develop and romance, too,
If only they can decide just what to do!

For Elliot life in the south of France
Has given him another chance
Helping his brother and sister-in-law follow their dreams
Enables him to also escape and make new schemes.

By making changes and taking chances
Maybe there'll be new opportunities and romances!
For my copy of this fabulous book I say a huge thank you

When Brionys beloved gran dies and leaves her a property, she is going through one of the worse period of her life. Recently made redundant from work and going through a divorce it might be just the escape she needs, whilst she decides what happens next. Ben is also going through an awful divorce himself and is staying with his brother Adam and his wife who moved to the area a few years before, to do up an old property. He needs something to feel passionate about again and finds solice in helping them.

A French Inheritance is a lovely story set in the South of France. It is a book about grief, friendship and second chances at not just romance but life.
I have read a book by the author previously and enjoy her writing style and the beautiful setting. Love the scene and bright colour on the anticipated book cover. It would make me pick up the book to find out more if I was in a book shop.

Jennifer Bohnet’s A French Inheritance is a quietly captivating escape into the heart of southern France, where old secrets stir beneath sun-warmed stone and the meaning of “home” is gently redefined. With her signature lightness of touch, Bohnet crafts a story that feels both familiar and fresh—perfect for readers who crave emotional depth without heavy drama.

The novel’s charm lies in its simplicity: a family legacy, a change of scenery, and the slow unraveling of truths long tucked away. The characters are relatable and warmly drawn, each navigating their own crossroads with grace and vulnerability. Bohnet’s prose is breezy yet evocative, conjuring lavender fields, rustic kitchens, and the quiet ache of reconnection.

Ideal for fans of Rosanna Ley and Erica James, this is a feel-good read with substance—gentle, atmospheric, and quietly hopeful. A lovely companion for late summer evenings and anyone dreaming of a life reset under Provençal skies.

After the death of her beloved French grandmother, a bitter divorce and being made redundant Briony travels to southern France to learn something that will change her life. Elliot, a vet , has also suffered from a divorce and has moved to his brother and sister in law's, farm next to Briony's grandmother's cottage to try to rebuild his life.
I am perfectly happy living in England, however books like this do show an an alternative lifestyle that does attract me. This is a slow burn romance giving an insight into what life in rural France could be like. It also shows what hard work farming and running a gite is, also what opportunities there are with sufficient imagination. Add in a couple of loveable dogs, some romance in later life and you have a cozy story to enjoy.
I received an advance copy of this book from the publisher through Netgalley, however this did not influence my review of the book.

I love the storytelling in this author's books; she knows the setting so well, and her characters are always vibrant and believable. Briony is at a crossroads in her life, grieving the death os a loved one, newly divorced and recently redundant, she accompanies her mother to France to sort out her Grandmother's estate, not knowing how life-changing it will be. Elliot is still recovering from a devastating divorce and has decided to make his home in France, working as a Vet. He meets Briony on his brother's property, and let's say he doesn't extend a warm welcome. It's a story of new beginnings, secrets and learning to trust. I appreciated the details about living in France, the culture and the people. It's an emotional and entertaining tale of friendship, love and second chances.

Briony inherited her grandmother’s house in France. This comes at a time when her life is falling apart. When she loses her job, her mother suggests they take a trip to France. From there, Briony is able to take a breath and start figuring out what’s next. Will she decide to live there and who will she meet?

A feel-good read with a happy ending! If you like reading books about expat life, new beginnings, friendships and love, then this book is for you! I loved how this book was set in the Cannes, France area as I was an expat there for 7 years! Therefore, I loved all the familiarities in this book! A great book to take on vacation or bring to your next book club!

I received a complimentary copy of this book. Opinions expressed in this review are completely my own.

A French Inheritance by Jennifer Bohnet is a true mental vacation to the French Riviera. Bohnet’s detailed, evocative writing makes you feel as though you’re strolling the countryside and soaking in the scenery yourself.

The characters, Briony and Elliot, are richly complex, with their layers gradually revealed as the story unfolds, pulling you deeper into their journey. This is a slow-burn romance that perfectly mirrors the unhurried lifestyle of the Riviera—elegant, reflective, and deeply heartfelt.

At its core, this is a beautiful second-chance romance that feels like the very definition of a love story.

After the death of her beloved granny, a divorce, and a redundancy, Briony heads to France with her mom to see the cottage she inherited from her and decide what happens next. Elliot is getting over a bitter divorce and staying with his brother Adam and wife Lucy to recover and start a new life.

I really enjoyed this story of second chance romance, the possibilities of starting a new life in France, and getting over messy divorces. I love the descriptions of living in France and reinventing yourself. I really enjoy stories by this author, and this was no exception.

Jennifer Bohnet's storytelling shines with its rich descriptions of the French countryside and the complexities of familial bonds. The characters are well-developed, each grappling with their pasts and striving for a brighter future. The narrative beautifully captures the essence of embracing change and finding happiness in the most unforeseen circumstances.

While the story is uplifting and engaging, some readers might find certain plot developments predictable. Nonetheless, the charm of the setting and the depth of the characters make this a delightful read for fans of contemporary romance and women's fiction.

This is the story of Briony and Elliot mainly although there are other character stories as well.
Briony inherits her grandmother's house on the Frenvh Riviera. We follow her decisions on whether to keep it or sell.
It was a gentle romance not very exciting but if you are looking for a story of friendship and healing with a small dash of romance you will find it here.
It was a bit predictable and I did feel it was slow in places.
I loved the descriptions of the countryside the house and also the dogs were great.
Not for me but I am sure others will love it.

Cozy, atmospheric, and full of French Riviera charm 🇫🇷✨ This book is more about life’s ups and downs than just romance — think grief 💔, friendship 🤝, fresh starts 🌿, and complicated exes 😬.

The multiple storylines made it feel warm and layered, without ever getting heavy. A perfect easy read when you need a gentle escape 🍷📖 Not for you if you're after a full-on romance, but ideal as a relaxing palette cleanser 🧺🌞

Briony gets made redundant from her job and decides with her mum to go back to Granny Giselles house that has been left to the family. She meets up with Adam and Lucy and makes friends with them. Adam’s brother Eliot is a trickier one to get along with. Briony’s Mum Jeannie is getting along with her life and reconnecting with her old friends too. This is a charming story and perfect to read. I hope there will be more to follow too.

Since the recent change in our weather, it felt wonderful to imagine the French sunshine on my body as we virtually explored the local countryside and consumed more pastries than I would feel comfortable recording in my food log.

The primary focus of the book is centred around Briony and her mother, who, after the death of Briony’s grandmother, arrive in the French Countryside to deal with her estate. This is where I gained a deeper understanding of the French legal system and its laws regarding inheritance.
We also met Adam and Lucy, who had bought a rundown farm and all its sprawling buildings and were now offering a temporary home to Elliot, Adam’s brother. Having been publicly disgraced by his ex-wife, Elliot is now wary of strangers and chooses to focus on his veterinary career. To ensure the smooth operation of the farm, Lucy decides to recruit a flexible worker.

Over the course of several books set in France, I have become intrigued by the term ‘Brocante’ and feel that my attention is always piqued when I spot the word, imagining the opportunity to discover long-lost treasures.

Elliot and Bryony are both wary of meeting a new partner, having been burned by their previous relationships. So, an incredibly gentle courtship ensues, and it’s not without several hurdles that need to be cleared.

Jeannie Aubert, Bryony’s mother, is eager to embrace a new life in France, so she makes it clear that she intends to remain and start over in a more relaxed setting. Having had her French dream stolen when her husband decided to settle in the UK, she now feels that this may be the right time for her French adventure.

A French Inheritance is such a gorgeous escape. I’m smiling as I type, remembering how the book made me feel when I was reading it. I highly recommend this gorgeous book and hope you enjoy it as much as I did.

A lovely read with the right ingredients to make this book a cozy read. The storytelling takes off to Provence in the country side near Cannes. The book is the story about Elliot Belgrave a veterinarian, needing a new start in his life. Adam his brother having his big project to renovate an old farm with cottages together with his wife Lucy. Briony one of the other main characters, goes back to her childhood memories in Provence and the cottage that she has inherited. Briony needs a change after her divorce, leaving the UK behind and just being herself finding the things that are important in life for her. Briony re-discovers herself wanting to make her life better and do what she really has the feeling for, it may include a brocante business, and also work together with Adam's wife. A story that is well weaved together and where you don't want it to end.
I can definitely recommend this book and feel happy having the opportunity to read this story.

I loved this charming, easy, escapist romance! The farm setting and the characters added a cozy feeling and a sense of community to the story. I enjoyed reading the text because the adjectives the author used seemed poetic in a way. I also liked the developing relationship between Briony and Elliott and the 2nd chance romance between Jeannie and Yann. It was such a refreshing and uplifting read!

Thank you NetGalley and Boldwood Books for the ARC in exchange for my honest review!

A French Inheritance by Jennifer Bohnet is a warm, feel-good escape to the sun-soaked South of France. Briony’s character growth is satisfying, Elliot’s quiet strength is heart-melting, and Adam and Lucy add charm and depth. With themes of family, friendship, love, and second chances—plus gorgeous scenery and a few dogs—this is classic feel-good summer read.

I enjoyed this book at the moment, but it did not lingering with me. It however was a fell good sl9w burn romance between two MCs who are recovering from their exs. The setting was perfect, very small town but exotic enough. I liked the secondary characters as well including the dogwho sticks to Elliott and is his emotional crutch.

Overall a decent read.

A fresh and delightful book with life changes and blooming romances in a village in the south of France. Easy to read and pleasing to the heart.
I voluntarily read and reviewed an advanced copy of the book. All thoughts and opinions are my own.

Jennifer writes such beautiful settings in her stories, reading this wonderful story I felt that I had been transported to the French Riviera.
Lots of fascinating and inspiring characters are introduced, it was wonderful to watch them all connect throughout the story.
Briony starts the story struggling with huge changes in her personal and professional life. An opportunity for a new start presents itself to her and she grabs the chance to go back to a familiar house from her childhood.
Meeting Elliot who is staying with his family close by adds a further opportunity for a new start. It was lovely seeing their friendship blossom.
As with former Jennifer books, we also witness other characters stories evolving alongside the main characters, which adds an additional layer of enjoyment.
Such a glorious feel good book that had me longing to visit the newly created gîtes on the renovated farm in France!

Thank you, NetGalley, Jennifer Bonnet, and Boldwood Books for the eARC. This story gave me strong Eat Pray Love and Under the Tuscan Sun vibes. It was romantic, heartwarming, and set against an idyllic backdrop, with true love and new beginnings speckled throughout.
