What's Coming to You

Rate this book
Mari never imagined she'd end up with someone as handsome and charming as Mason Goodridge. After six years of marriage, their relationship is far from perfect, but she refuses to give up on what they've built together. Little does she know, Mason's got other plans, and in one horrific night of discovery, her world comes crashing fatally down.

Now that Mari's gone, Mason is determined to reclaim his life on his terms, but something always gets in the way. He's gone from hometown hero to the most hated man alive, plagued by threatening phone calls and strange occurrences; his increasingly possessive mistress is off the rails; his mom is becoming dangerously suspicious; and even though Mari's death was ruled an accident, the detective assigned to her case seems to believe otherwise.

No matter how hard Mason tries to control them, each woman is inching closer to a secret that, if discovered, would mean his total destruction. For one of them, that's the goal.

Shivani Jai has always had a thing for big feelings, bold characters, and stories that stay with you long after you've finished reading. A lifelong movie lover, she followed her passion to Hollywood and spent 13 years in film and TV publicity, spinning stories behind the scenes, but eventually realized she had stories of her own to tell. Her debut psychological thriller, WHAT'S COMING TO YOU, is out this summer and pulls no punches.

Shivani has a master’s degree in communications and documentary production, which sounds very serious, but mostly means she knows how to get to the emotional core of a story. She lives in Los Angeles and writes the kinds of characters that live loud in your head—flawed, vibrant, and all too real.

Picked up this book & couldn’t put it down! It was such a good read. The author does a great job with engaging you from the very beginning. You head right into the plot and you’re left wanting to stay up all night saying to yourself, “just one more chapter.” I also love the realistic aspect of trying to internally balance knowing you want something for yourself while battling what you know is best for you. Definitely recommend for your TBR!!

What’s Coming to You by Shivani Jai had me locked in from the very beginning because Mari wastes absolutely no time opening up her life to Mason, and immediately something feels off. The vibes are wrong, the tension is thick, and you can tell this man is the type to charm you one minute and tear you down the next. Mason is manipulative, narcissistic, and thrives on making Mari feel small just so he can feel powerful, which made me hate him early on. I loved how the story unfolded like a movie, slowly tightening the screws and letting the reader sit in that unease while Mari is trying to build a future with someone who is clearly not who he presents himself to be.

What really stood out to me was how realistic the dynamics felt, especially when it came to power, money, and control. The way Mason leans on Mari and her family while still thinking way too highly of himself felt painfully familiar and very true to real life. Ryan calling Mason out was deeply satisfying because somebody needed to read him for filth, but even then I found myself questioning everyone. The tension around who to trust, who knows what, and who might be playing their own game kept me second guessing everything. Even the investigation side of the story had me frustrated in the best way, because watching people fall for Mason’s charm while red flags are waving everywhere was infuriating.

This book really shines in how it keeps you unsure about Mari’s fate for most of the story, and I loved not knowing if she was dead or alive. The details surrounding what happened to her felt unsettling and wrong, which only added to the suspense. By the time the truth starts to come out, I was furious, satisfied, and still wanting more consequences for the people who deserved it. Mason is one of those characters you love to hate, and while I did feel like the ending was a little rushed, it did not take away from how intense and addictive this story was. Shivani Jai delivered a messy, twisted, emotional ride and I was eating it up the whole time.

4.5 stars. Mari was reluctant to go on a blind date, but after trusting her friend’s set-up, she found the man she wanted to marry. Mason Goodridge did not typically go for women like Mari, but there was something about her that pulled him in. The only issue with their relationship is that Mason is a narcissist who likes to get his way, and Mari is headstrong. His games didn’t work on her at first, but once they were married, he slowly started to break her down. Their relationship is on shaky ground and it all comes crashing down when Mari goes missing.

Round of applause for this debut, please! 👏🏼 This story really took me on a journey. I loved the pacing and jumping around in their timeline. It flowed perfectly and despite jumping years ahead, was still able to depict their relationship and struggles clearly. Mason made me SO mad, so the author did a great job putting his personality to the page. I was so curious what happened to Mari, and sad she was stuck in a relationship with someone like Mason. I would’ve liked to see more from her friends / family at the end, but I’m also very happy with how the book resolved. There were some elements I did not expect; ones that gave me chills. I’m very thankful for the chance to read this book and for your kind note!

Payback’s a…

White knuckle thrill. Awesome first book for Shivani Jai and I hope Netflix or one of the other streaming services is paying attention to her. Great story and some truly despicable characters that you just want to see get what’s coming to them. Highly recommended and I look forward to see what comes next from her.

Character driven domestic thriller that had me emotional and fueled by rage. Loved the writing style, just wished there was more of a unique ending but still a great story

I was hooked and honestly a little angry from the very beginning. Mari could have done so much better than Mason. He reminded me of the narcissistic ex I had in college, and I feel like every girl has that guy. In Mari’s case, she actually marries him.

I loved how the author captured the way a man like Mason can flip on the charm, make a woman feel chosen and lucky, and then leave her doubting and hating herself for staying. The paranormal elements were fascinating and added so much depth, and I really enjoyed the shifting points of view from all the characters.

I was gifted this copy by the author, and I truly could not put it down. It is one of the best thrillers I have read in a long time. I will be recommending it to my friends and to any publishers I know because this story deserves a wide audience. If it were ever adapted into a movie, it would be terrifying in the best way. The scariest part is that beyond the paranormal, the human behavior is frighteningly accurate.

Thank you so much, Shivani, for this incredible book. I will treasure my copy and hope everyone gets the chance to read it. An amazing, wild ride with five huge stars.

I have genuinely mixed feelings about this book, but I cannot stop thinking about it. Mason is such a narcissist that reading from his perspective was honestly exhausting, but that's also exactly what made the book work so effectively. You hate him so intensely that you find yourself rooting for the ghost to win. Jeanine was equally terrible, which made their eventual downfall incredibly satisfying to witness. The supernatural elements start subtle but build to a completely terrifying climax that had my heart racing. I also really enjoyed Detective Hoxton's character as she tries to solve the case while Mason slowly falls apart. The pacing is fast, and the short chapters keep you moving through the darkness. It's a deeply unsettling book about toxic relationships and the heavy price of pure selfishness. By the very end, I was genuinely glad Mason drowned. The title says it all—he got exactly what was coming to him. It's worth the read if you can handle truly unlikable characters and dark themes.

The story mainly follows Mari and Mason, a married couple.

After Mari’s death is ruled an accident Mason moves on but nothing goes as planned.

What really stood out to me was the dialogue. It felt incredibly real and natural. The conversations carried tension, manipulation, and emotional weight in a way that made the characters feel believable, even when their choices were questionable.

I didn’t realize this book had paranormal elements, which isn’t usually my thing. That aspect pulled me out a bit, but it wasn’t enough to ruin the experience.

Even though the paranormal twist wasn’t my favorite and I didn’t like the end, I still enjoyed this one. If you like thrillers with messy relationships, secrets, and a creeping sense that someone is about to get what’s coming to them, this is worth checking out.

This book tells the story of Mason and Mari Goodridge. It starts on the day they met, which was a blind double date set up by their friends. They fell in love and soon were married. They try for years to have a child unsuccessfully. Then suddenly, Mari ends up pregnant and is excited for she and Mason to start building their family. You can feel tension at various times in their relationship but they always seem to find their way back to each other, until one horrific night when both of their lives are changed. Mari goes missing and no one knows where she is. They find her car a few days later submerged in a lake and label it an accident due to it raining the night she went missing. Things aren’t always what they seem and hell hath no fury like a woman scorned. This is a very fast paced action packed book. Thoroughly enjoyed reading it.

3.5 ⭐️⭐️⭐️ stars!! This story follows Mari and Mason, who meet through mutual friends. Mari is sure she’s found something good, even though there’s this quiet sense that not everything is as perfect as it seems. She moves forward anyway, their lives intertwine, and years later something tragic happens that leaves a lot of unanswered questions.

For most of the book, I was fully invested and low‑key irritated in that addictive way that keeps you turning pages. The ending didn’t land as strongly for me, but if you like stories where things eventually come full circle with a hint of the supernatural, it’s definitely worth picking up.

4.5⭐️ this was a very entertaining read, for this to be a debut novel.
Mari, the FMC, ignored several red flags when it came to Mason… but I guess love is blind. Mason worked my nerves the entire book. I understand he was written like that purposefully but still… he’s being added to my most hated mmc list.
I was intrigued from the start… the story progressively got creepy/thrilling once Mari went missing. I really liked trying to figure out if Mari was alive or not throughout the story.
The only thing I wasn’t the biggest fan of was when certain time jumps didn’t seem fluid. Overall this was a good read!

This book hit me incredibly hard from the first page. As someone who knows what betrayal feels like, watching Mason destroy everything good in his life made me absolutely furious, but watching Mari come back for him gave me genuine chills. Jai writes the emotional aftermath of infidelity with painful, accurate detail, but then takes the story further into horror. The scenes in the bathroom and the final car crash are genuinely terrifying and stayed with me for days. This is a story about karma being delivered more than it is about ghosts. Mason gets exactly what's coming to him in the end, and I felt a strange sense of relief when it was finally over. A great read indeed.

Mari and Mason have the perfect relationship... from the outside. When they first meet everything seems to be going well, until Mason shows his true colors. He is a manipulative man, always thinking 3 steps ahead for his own gain. When Mari ends up dead but it is ruled an accident, everyone turns on him and the police are trying everything to uncover the real truth.

This book has now been added to my new favorite sub-genre of thrillers: the most insufferable man you can think of doing horrible things. This book was a whirlwind of emotions and twists, and I thoroughly enjoyed the ride.

What a hidden gem that should be on everyone’s TBR. The build up to seeing the relationship unfold and crumble between Mari and Mason was tense. Gaslighting to the max kind of on parts. Many characters are unlikeable and let’s say it unhinged….but man oh man it made the book so much more enjoyable. The last few chapters were chefs kiss and so revenge filled satisfying with a supernatural twist. There are a lot of triggers for just about everything but I think the author did a fantastic job with it.

3.5 rounded up. This book was fantastic until the end. The paranormal/paranoia trope wasn't for me. I will say that I read the book in 12 hours had the potential to be a solid 5
