The Other Side of Perfect: A True Story of Love, Lies, and Learning to Forgive
The Other Side of Perfect is a raw, inspiring memoir about confronting the darkness we never asked for—and finding the courage to break free and rewrite our own story.
The perfect life. The perfect marriage. The perfect illusion.
Venus Morris Griffin seemed to be living a fairy married to a charming and charismatic man, raising six beautiful children, and crafting a life that sparkled with promise. But beneath this enchanting facade lurked a dark reality, one that began to unravel with one late-night phone call from a prostitute. It was a call that shattered her world, exposing the devastating secrets that had been lurking in the shadows.
What followed was a tumultuous journey, marked by both public and private her husband’s shocking arrest, a staggering 45-year prison sentence, financial devastation, and the overwhelming burden of starting anew with her six children all depending on her strength. Yet this was not the first time Venus faced betrayal. Growing up in a home marked by chaos, instability, and heartbreak, Venus learned at a young age what it felt like to be abandoned, overlooked, and desperate to be loved.
In this compelling memoir, Venus opens her heart to reveal the abuse, deception, and emotional trauma she endured. She then chronicles her journey from shattered dreams to reclaiming her life as a self-made multimillionaire and powerhouse in the real estate industry, known for her remarkable success and determination.
The Other Side of Perfect is a powerful anthem for every person who has been told to stay quiet, stay small, or stay broken. It is not just a narrative of survival; it is also a celebration of resilience and the unyielding spirit of those who dare to dream beyond their circumstances.

This is the kind of book that once you pick it up, it’s hard to put down.
For those who shake their heads in judgment and wonder how Venus could have put up with so much and still stayed, I’d be willing to bet you haven’t walked an hour, much less a day, in her shoes. It’s so easy to stand on the outside looking in and judge someone else’s story.
What I see is one hell of a lot of determination, perseverance, grit, and a woman who spent so much of her life showing compassion for everyone but herself.
This book is about so much more than surviving years of abuse. It’s about growing, owning your mistakes, learning your worth, and finding the strength to come out on the other side a better person.
I am truly inspired by Venus’s honesty, resilience, and ability to overcome the life she was born into. It takes a lot of courage to share your story, especially the parts that aren’t pretty.
An incredible read and a powerful reminder that you never really know what someone else has been through.

Not only did this woman fail to protect her children from their father, but she then writes a book exposing them and keeping nothing scared. Complete failure. She detailed throughout the book all of the things she was aware of and yet she failed to act. She simultaneously described their family as picture perfect to everyone who knew them. She had a very successful career during the marriage (she never stopped talking about how great she was) and just handed the money over to her husband who then spent it and put the family into debt. So she was an uber successful girl boss who had no idea what was happening to the money she was making. Really not believable at all.

There are so many themes to take away from this book, but the biggest thing I took away was a new perspective and belief in the world. A newfound belief in myself, belief in others, belief that good can rise from any evil. I used to think trauma decided people’s life path for them. Venus has proved to me it does not. Venus’s optimism is infectious, despite seemingly unbeatable odds.
This is an absolute must read for every person navigating any difficulty in life. Venus hands you a life map of how to navigate trauma with forgiveness, optimism, and grace. A must read.

The Other Side of Perfect is one of those rare memoirs that is both heartbreaking and uplifting at the same time. Venus Morris Griffin writes with a candor that never feels performative. She simply tells the truth, even when the truth is uncomfortable, and that is what makes her story so compelling. What struck me most was her voice: warm, unflinching, and completely free of self pity. She does not ask for sympathy. She invites you to walk alongside her, and you cannot help but keep turning the pages. The writing is clean and immersive, and the pacing never drags despite the heavy subject matter. But beyond the craft, there is something bigger here, a reminder that resilience is not about never breaking. It is about what you build after. This is a book I will be recommending to friends for a long time. It deserves every bit of praise it is getting.

Oh my goodness, I devoured this book. I first heard of Venus on Dani Shapiro’s “Family Secrets” podcast. Then found her story on Humans of New York. And for years I hoped she’d write a book. So many threads of her story related to mine: navigating addiction with a parent and a spouse, housing insecurity, going to college in SC, divorcing in the Bible Belt, the judgment of being a single mom, and just simply putting one foot in of the other to get to a better place. I can’t wait to send this book to my best friends. They’re strong women, too, and they will relate to the grit and perseverance. Wishing all good things for Venus and her family

I normally do not buy books but all proceeds are going to help others. This story shows just what one can overcome. I wish Venus the best in all she does.
I question why didn’t his stepmom and dad say he never played football in college. This was a big lie he told. If they would have told this early — this story may have turned out differently.

Her ex husband was/is a dirt bag! He deserves to be right where he’s at. Prison.
I commend her for working so hard to overcome and be strong and successful. I’ve been following her on social media for years. She is a strong and powerful woman!

What a story!! She definitely suffered immensely and somehow managed to survive. I commend her for her courage, determination and bravery to support her children and give them a chance for a better future.
