Caledon University is a prestigious academic institution located in Lakeport, Vermont. This is the campus that Max Caulfield and Chloe Price attend in Life is Strange: Double Exposure and Life is Strange: Reunion.
Max usually takes photos, and Chloe has a band merch sketchbook, so we see examples of their work. There are maps, staff profiles, student society profiles, and commentary from the characters. Seeing handwritten notes, photos, and doodles gives us a very personal behind-the-scenes look at Caledon. It's laid out like the editing copy of the college prospectus for students; even if you haven't played the game, the commentary in the margins on the text is still funny. There are even notes on the real-world people involved in making the book, as if they're part of university life.
It's a fun way to insert photos of the locations from the game, introduce characters, and showcase their personalities.
A really good tie-in to the last two Life Is Strange titles - Double Exposure and Reunion. Really well done, with some genuine humor as the characters argue on the sides of pages about dodgy AI and Safi's impersonations put words into people's mouths that they then argue about in turn, combined with some really nice art from the games and some surprisingly poignant moments about the crossed timelines and their aftereffects. Also some surprising shoutouts to a couple of other games in the series, which makes me want to go and play all of them again.
reasons as to why this book did not get the 5 stars it should have gotten:
(hopefully constructive) criticism and mistakes: - spelling mistakes from games not corrected (e.g. vinh is spelled "vihn" on his award) - why not use student names from double exposure npcs instead of making up new ones? - some comments / statements raise even more questions - lake champlain is accidentally written as lake chamberlain - faculty profiles should have been much more extensive with not heard before information, like the student profiles in "welcome to blackwell academy" - confusing changes / canonical differences from in-game to book (e.g. one of gwen's photos with her wife was heavily edited and changed) - why use that one newspaper article from lis2 where they got sean's age wrong? - i'm not a fan of a lis2 ending being canonised in the book - the cat snatch fever article was SO confusing and had no conclusion
personal preference: - i'd have preferred more commentary from characters like vinh, gwen, safi etc and way less from owen
