Sabbath Meditations

From New York Times bestselling author John Mark Comer and the team at Practicing the Way, these simple, beautiful meditations offer a way to enter into the beauty of the Sabbath day and keep it holy, integrating spiritual formation into your personal and communal faith practice.

God designed the Sabbath to be a day like no other. It is an aftertaste of Eden—a time when all was as it was meant to be. And it is a forestate of eternity, of the “new heavens and new earth”—a day in which we anticipate and act out our glorious future as the people of God fully set free from the curse and made new under his good rule.

This collection of readings and Bible passages serves as your invitation into an intentional Sabbath practice, helping you to pause, along with your family or faith community, and more fully experience a day set apart, with four sections designed to help you to

Read it in bites. A little bit of poetry, some quotes, some prayer, some thoughts, some liturgies, some suggestions. If you practice sabbath, this could be a fun book to add to your weekly ritual.

JM Comer writes this time the same way he does all his publications... with lots of spacing in between, credit to the giver, and bullet points. I read this in one hour cover to cover even while occasionally checking my phone, which is the opposite of what you should be doing when reading a book on Sabbath. Some of his recommendations for one of the four parts (Stop, Rest, Delight, Worship) of practicing Sabbath are: Turn off phone (Stop), Nap (Rest), Eat that donut and have sex (Delight), and Worship (pray the psalms and go to church). Point being, that the Sabbath comes whether you choose to practice it or not, so why disobey the only discipline that actually made it to the ten commandments. Did you ever notice the ten commandments being mainly don't do this that, but the Sabbath is a DO. Do be still and know He is God.

Sabbath Meditations by John Mark Comer and Practicing the Way deeply encouraged my soul. In a world that constantly pushes us to do more and move faster, this book was a refreshing invitation to slow down and be present with God. Its simple yet profound reflections helped me see the gift of rest in a fresh way and reminded me that my identity is found in being with Jesus, not just doing for Him. It spoke to my heart in many ways, and I would highly recommend it to anyone longing for a deeper, quieter walk with Christ.

So nice to see one of JMC’s Disciplines made into a reflective, engaging book of meditations. What a great reminder of what it truly means to slow down and be present in our day of rest. Will be adding this into our Sabbath dinner convos for sure. 🫶🏾

One of my favorite weekend reads. Really neat structure and layout.

Plan is to keep this one nearby and return to it most weekends as I seek a more consistent Sabbath practice.
